Hi all,
I'd like to connect one of my USB hard drives to my old HTC Magic. What would I need to do to make that work? I've read about host cables and host modules on the phone.
Anyone that could give me some pointers?

Hi,
I doubt that's possible with low effort, Magic doesn't have an USB host, it's only a client (like an pendrive) so I think it would be a huge hardware problem.
Additionally - to start an HDD You'll need an maximal current what an USB port can give (500mA), I doubt that Magic has this power.
I actually bought a powered USB hub to make it worked and was just about to create my own otg cable, when I bricked it when I tried to upgrade the radio.

No way to go to the recovery? Fastboot? Connecting with ADB trough the USB cable?
Look what I've found! HTC Magic USB HOST
Well, perhaps I should give it another go, but it's stuck on a screen with a package and an android with an arrow pointing the android into the package - or if it was the other way around. After a quick moment, the screen goes black... restart does the same.
So there is a way then

But, hmm You had some unstock rom or not?
Can You run the recovery or not? (Turn off Your phone and turn it on pressing HOME + POWER button)
If You can run into recovery, then there should be no problem
I were about to flash another custom ROM from CM6.1.
And I am unable to access recovery. I'm stuck on the radio flash screen.

I have had trouble in download mode with phone recognition.
Try this,
When you're in download mode, plug and unplug the data cable. try it four or five times until you hear that Windows driver installed sound.
tried this before.... and have waited for an hour but it just won't recognize my sgs.
if its turn on and pluged to my Computer it show unrecognized device connected. i tried uninstall and reinstall driver but all fail. it has been a month now i just can't connect.
any other advices please.
thanks

Most important now is to get your PC recognised.
How?
Uninstalling the drivers by going to your device manager.
Deleting your device from the device manager and re-inserting your phone to the PC. See if you get the same unrecognized device.
Try doing it in different combination. Try what gbohm had suggested using another PC and installing the drivers.
You got to keep on trying. Only when you get back into working condition then we talk about the root cause, ok?
Let us know.

You are getting me confused. You said in the op that you can only go to download mode but your com cannot recognised your phone.
But now it looks like you can boot up your phone and the problem is the icon refused to go off until you reset the phone.
Connect your phone to pc under download mode and launch odin. Did you see odin have a small yellow highlighted box @ the ID:COM?
If yellow it means you can reflash your rom.
Sent from my GT-I9000
i can reboot my phone with cwm or usb plug into phone with power supply. if i on my phone without power supply it will goes to download mode.
odin won't recognize my phone otherwise i would have go back to stock rom and send it back for warranty. i am stuck cos its rooted and on written rom which would void warranty.
this is my biggest problem while it still normal but i can't use it an external storage when hook on usb to my computer.
thanks guys and my case is rather unique which i can't find anyone having this problem posted on xda forum.
regards,
andrew

Do this:
When your phone is in dowload mode (so when you see the green android logo) disconnect all cables.
Open odin on your pc.
Now connect your phone to your pc.
Now tell us what you see in odin.

It could be bad download mode. Try the hard reset button on back of the phone. You see it between camera and speaker, try pressing it same time you press download mode combo. I take no credits of this method, Yovi found it and you should thank him if it works.

Is USB debugging unchecked?
Also try this if you havent allready tried: put usb connect settings in the phone on KIES, start KIES on pc, wait for it to load, then plug in phone to usb, wait till KIES recognizes.
I set usb debug and mount still no effect. Kies also done all no hope. thank

You can try doing a factory reset..i know not the most elegant solution.
Failing that, there is a known hardware defect regarding the usb port on the phone that will have to be repaired. I had to get mine repaired.
If windows is reporting the phone as being an invalid usb device this may be the problem. Hopefully your phone is still under warranty.

if your USB input is sound, the device motherboard has moisture damage. The same thing happened to mine.

The search button is your friend
When inside the bootloader, plug the tablet into the USB port on your computer. Then select recovery. That should solve the problem.
I had this problem also. Some people say that you don't need the drivers installed and you can use a USB port on anything, I used the USB port on my PC and it wouldn't let me select recovery until I installed the drivers.
Dear friends,
Recently I damaged by USB port. So, I sent my phone for repairing at Samsung Servicing Centre where they replaced my USB port. After they replaced my USB port, my phone is not detected by PC anymore. Nothing happens at all if I connect my phone to a PC. There is no notification at all. My phone is only charging. I tried pulling up and down the tongue - like structure inside my USB port but it's of no use at all. I am at a delimma. Please help.

repairs are usually covered by warranty upon the same issue incase they were unable to fix it.
take it back to them and demand to resolve the issue,
you paid good money for the repair and therefore should be entitled to it
maybe u haven't installed samsung usb drivers
the same problem with mine., i just changed my usb chord after that i cannot connect to usb mass storage anymore even i installed usb driver still can't access storage

The main problem is that it is not even detected by my PC as connected. There is no notification of the phone being connected at all both in PC and phone. Can this be due to the USB cable that I am using? Or is the new USB port incompatible with my phone? Will reflashing the Rom solve the problem? The Samsung Servicing Centre fellows have no solution at all. They simply said that it is a software problem because I am on a custom Rom and that my USB is blocked. I don't think USB port can get blocked because of flashing a custom Rom because it was working fine before the repair. Please please please help me.

this also happens to me sometimes and ive already given you my own solution to this
if your phone is charging when you connect to the pc..
it means the chord is maybe working..
try to tighten the usb chord connector to the usb socket of your pc..
are you sure you are using the right drivers?? kindly check or use the kies cd
be patient and wait for the phone drivers to be automatically installed by the pc when you connect the phone fr the 1st time..
try turning off you anti-virus.. (not related but....)

There are charge only cables that do not data connect. If it is trickle charging the phone that is the problem. But you say there is no indication of a connection; sorry I just kinda jumped in at random. Your post popped up in the new posts list.

Pen drives are working properly. I don't think its the cable because it is the original USB cable provided with the phone. I have tried with other USB cables but same result. Will flashing stock Rom really solve the problem? I can't flash stock Rom because I can't connect to Odin boy longer.

You probably need the HTC sync drivers.

Drivers installed correctly. The Problem is that windows does not detect anything in both modes. For all works perfectly in the MAGLDR
What does it day in device manager when connected in boot loader?
Try disabling any antivirus temporarily if all looks OK in device manager..

Might be worth trying to reinstall drivers and disable any anti virus plus external storage you may have. Supposedly cpuz causes conflicts at times however I've never faced this personally.
