[Q] Nexus 10 or iPad with Retina Display(4th gen) - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I like to find Christmas present early and I can't choose the Nexus 10 or the iPad 4th generation please answer soon and please. Be specific your answer please. Thank you

The N10 has a better screen than the iPad 4.

They are great screens. I know people said iPad is better for text.
It's your decision, not ours.

From the Verge's review, the screen are a dead tie. Both look fantastic. What needs to be considered is right now, there are a ton of Ipad optimized apps. I'm sure Google Play will eventually catch up but right now Apple has the best "ecosystem".

"$200 for the 8 GB model and $250 for 16 GB—that this thing is aiming squarely to extinguish the Fire, as is the big push Google is pressing on sucking up your favorite media"
"built by Asus, the Nexus holds a 1.3Ghz quad-core CPU, 12-core Tegra 3 processor, NFC, and 1 GB of RAM, a 1.2MP front-facing camera, and 8 hours of battery life—all with two different storage variants: 8 GB and 16 GB. That's a damn good level of muscle behind a 7-inch, 1280x800 screen, measuring 198.5 x 120 x 10.45mm."
Why? Do you regret buying a device that has been out for almost a year? If so, you probably get buyer's remorse for every single item you've ever purchased. The tech world moves rather quickly. Rumor has it Amazon will reply with a KF2 by end of July. We'll see. Be happy that we're seeing cheaper and better devices. Don't be a cheapass.

my girl got me the fire for v -day thinking she was being nice. i never actually wanted it. now this is out and if i change my fire for this i will have to listen to her whining because she doesnt understand tech
On the plus side, I'll begin Android 4.1 development the day the source is dropped by Google.
That's mid July.
Last I checked, the Nexus 7 will ship in about 2-3 weeks.
That's mid July.
So while the Kindle Fire will get blown away on any benchmark when compared to the Nexus 7... It may have Jelly Bean running on it right around the same time Nexus 7 owner's are getting them in their homes.

I was thinking the same thing and checked out CL and was stunned. Fire's are hemorrhaging on that site for as low as $75 used and $100 new/unopened. So I'm probably going to pass on this new toy from Google as nice as it is...
I'm pretty confident that besides Skype, there really isn't much I would do on that tablet than I can already do on the Fire (I don't use Bluetooth on it and I don't play games on it...so...).
Not saying my choice is the right one for everyone...but the extra $125 I would have to spend doesn't really justify it for me.

I agree, my KF does everything I want a tablet to do except for video chat, though I have my Rezound and laptop for that. Knowing Hash will have Jelly Bean for us about the same time the Nexus 7 is released is awesome. I'll probably upgrade from the KF after a full year of use (early January '13) but I'm in no rush.
I look at it this way, we already have something Nexus 7 buyers don't: a out 8 months use of a good solid Android tablet.

NFC and GPS too if those matter to you; and the Nexus is sounding quite speedy too.
It's been over half a year since Amazon started selling the current Fire and I'm curious to see what kind of performance, features, and screen sizes their rumored Fire 2 will have

I just ran the chain fire benchmark and the sun spider browser benchmark on my fire running the sgt7 ROM. I came really close to their numbers for the Nexus, 1757 for spider and 11047 for chain.
It's clear that the linaro tweaks give a huge boost, and Google has probably incorporated those optimizations into jelly bean.

Do you have a mother, sister, brother, or even a father that might like this Kindle Fire? (Especially a mother, sister or other female family member.) You can explain to your girl that you really appreciate the thoughtfulness of her getting it for you but you've decide that you really want person XYZ to have it and you've got your eye on device ABC when it comes out. Of course some variation might be needed, but if you put enough thoughtfulness into how you explain it then your girl can hardly argue with you otherwise she'll look like a real *****.... but presentation is key.
What will Jelly Bean give us that we don't already have?
I'm curious.

For us (Kindle Fire users)...probably not much.
Am I the only one who hates that the Nexus 7 is just an oversized phone?
Seeing as how the Fire handles ICS way better than my phone, I do not see a legitimate reason to switch to a Nexus 7.

Apple managed to put worse screen than Nexus 7 to 130$ more expensive tablet.
Resolution is probably one of the most important things on relatively larger screens. So answer is simple.
Unless you have some sort of strong attachment to iOS, these two tablets aren't even in the same league.

Nexus 7 for 8 Year Old Birthday Present..?

Hi guys,
Youngest daughter has decided on a tablet for her 8th Birthday (birthday is end of August).
I think a 7" tablet will be more than fine for what she needs. So with all the 7" tablets around would you pick the Nexus 7 over all the others?
16GB WIFI will be the model I buy as I doubt very much she will ever get close to using up 16GB.
I've just spend a long time reading about the 2nd Generation coming out end of July - will the 2nd generation sort out the lag problems what occur over time with the 1st generation or is this 'lag' just rumours?

I think it's a better decision to wait for the 2nd gen Nexus 7, and yes, the first gen is a little bit laggy but if you stay with the stock kernel it'll be fine.
I have had a Nexus 7 for over 7 months and I have seen no signs of lag. Also there will be a 4.3 update which has fixed lag and touch responsiveness problems on the Nexus 4 so it will probably fix the lag problem on the Nexus 7. Nexus 7's are dirt cheap now and the 2nd gen won't be as cheap.

Lag....have'nt experienced any since january...CUZ I BOUGHT NEXUS 7 IN JANUARY...
A first gen nexus 7 is more than enough for an 8yo. Kids don't care about what cpu is in the tablet or about the screan resolution or what not. All they want is for it to turn on and play the games they install. The nexus 7 has more than enough prosesing power for all the newest games, and with the next gen coming out soon, the first gens are dirt cheap. In fact, you just convinced me to get one for my kid too :good: On a side note, I've had my n7 for 8 months and never had any lag. Good luck on your tablet choice and happy b-day to your kid.
I recently flashed back to stock 4.2.2 and did noticed more lag then a custom ROM + kernel. It might partially because I previously had the CPU overclocked with userspace governor.
Agree with other replies, I have had 1st gen since launch and haven't experienced any noticeable lag, and would highly recommend this.
Personally I would wait for a 2nd gen, but imagine there will be a price drop for 1st Gen too from Google if prices is a consideration....and the 1st gen will get 4.3 and other updates pretty rapidly too
Chris
OK - I will wait to see what happens with pricing of the 2nd gen vs 1st gen before buying anything.
My 8 year old won't notice any difference between a 1st gen and 2nd gen - however I will hehe, first thing I will be doing to it is flashing rascarlo and franco as that is what is on my Nexus 4.
Can't believe how many Nexus 7's are going up for sale, but the sad thing is people want far too much for them as they can't take the hit for how much they will lose through selling it for a 2nd gen replacement.
Tesco and Argos in the UK are both doing reconditioned units with 12 months warranty for ~£120 inc P&P.
Can't wait to order one and mess with it (I mean wrap it up for her birthday).
My six year old daughter got my 16 gig model hand me down when I got my 32 gig. She has had it for almost a year and loves it. I am running latest AOKP and FRanco kernel and everything runs great a good battery life. I got a pink rubberized case to go around it and has saved it from many falls. I highly recommend it for kids in my own personal experience.

As was I, however this is a new generation. They are using more tech just for school work and they see their parents using things and want to emulate them. It also actually helps them learn and grow. It helps with hand eye coordination as well as learning/reading/entertainment. Like anything else moderation is the key, it is not meant to be a babysitter.

At 8 years old I was using my Dad's Mac SE/30 with a huuuuge 20 MB hard drive! And after my Bar Mitzvah I spent well over $1K of gift money a 486 IBM Aptiva. So a cheap N7 does not seem out of the question.
I would say, go with the 1st gen 16 or 32 gig. It's still a quad-core processor, and you may find lag issues improve in 4.3. Then again I'm a techie guy at age 31 and I seriously have not experienced any notable lag. The only thing is, the 1st gen has a lousy speaker and it may blow out after a while.
Also a piece of advice: Create a separate Google Play account and do not keep a billing method assigned to it. If you want to purchase anything on that account, add your credit/debit card to her account and make the purchases, and then remove the card again. Also, prepaid Google Play gift cards could be added to her account. This makes sure she will not trigger any unwanted or excessive in-app purchases. If you have apps you bought and want her to use them too, sign in with your secondary account, install them, and then sign out.
There are sooo many bright and colourful games that kids would love to play - and that support in-app purchases. Protect yourself

Get it for her!
I got my 6.5 yr old the N7 for Christmas (she's 7 now, bday in March). She got my 16gb WiFi version & I gifted myself the 32 gb version.
We've had no trouble with it. I got a cute pink case, tossed some Hello Kitty icons, themes & bam, good to go. She loves it & has no complaints.
No reason to get her the next-gen N7 - The original is a high-end enough device that it will last as long as it's taken care of & be supported for some time to come from Google (Android 5 in October, etc.). Save the $50+ you'd spend getting 2nd Gen & get her the 1st Gen with case, screen protector, cool stylus, & maybe some Play credit
Happy birthday to kiddo whichever way you go.
And to the person posting about being outside & playing at 8, sure. It's called a time limit on electronics. I'd rather she was playing on her tablet than watching TV. And 50% of the time she'd rather be outside swimming, playing soccer, running than inside, so I'm Ok with her having a tablet. Good way to build responsibility and another thing the help with rules and guidelines and making good choices...learning & development - mental enrichment NOT at the detriment of physical activity.

This is a very subjective statement.. Maybe for you the Nexus is better, for others maybe the Air.
Hence my personal opinion, and this might not be yours at all, that such comparisons (and discussions what is better etc) are non-sense as both devices might have different target groups as well. Both devices are/will be very good for its respective user/target group.
But please go ahead and check for yourself which one is better for you

Personally I like iOS and Android equally. they both do what they do well and have their own problems, but saying one sucks over the other usually means you're putting a little too much of your life into things that don't matter to you. go drink some hot tea and rest your feet. Don't worry about Operating Systems.

Doesn't make sense, the aforementioned article mentions the Nexus 8 to have an 8" display running 1920x1200 with 8GB memory, those specs just seem like scattered rumors pieced together.
Oh well, we shall see.
There will be no more NEXUS devices released this year. There is NO new Nexus 10 & the Nexus 8 is only a conceptual device that has been submitted to Google by two manufacturers, with a third supposedly also working on a conceptual device.
When any of those devices are anywhere near a release, you will see VERIFIABLE evidence. Like FCC filings that actually make sense, not just someone blankly stating their is some mystery FCC filing without giving any evidence. You will also see things like service manuals & warranty documentation leak out. This happens with every device Google, or any Android partner, has ever made. There is actual supporting evidence, just like the Nexus 4 & 5 & the 7 & the 7 2013. So far there has been nothing even close to legitimate pointing to any of these devices being anywhere near a release. Just rumor, speculation & a few FAKED screen grabs.

I would love to see a Nexus 8 device released, but I'm afraid you're right. If Google was going to release one, they would have to do it now in order to take advantage of holiday sales. There is no good evidence for one, at this point, and the door is pretty much closed for this season.

But I also believe "7" is better than "8". While if you go for 10 or above, then iPad is a better choice.
For the cost I would not say the iPad is better then the nex 10.

Dude, I HATE apple, but I will tell you flat out, hands down, the iPad & even the new KF HDX, both blow the Nexus 10 away handily. I use the N7 2013 as my primary, but have sold the N10 for an HDX 8.9 just as a media consumption device.
Samsung's processor & GPU is just inferior to the SD800 & adreno 330 & struggles with many events on the N10.

That's so obviously a fake render. No nexus cutout on the back? An Android 4.3 logo printed on it?

I said "for the cost". The Ipad has drawbacks as well considering it does not use Android. I guess it just depends on the user as well. I know many people that have the Nex 10 and have never mentioned any "struggling" issues but again it depends on the user and the cost. While the Ipad may perform better and have a better display you will pay steeply for it. For me the extra cost just is not worth it plus I really can never go back to a system like that. I would honestly rather have a customizable system like Android with a little bit lesser performance, lower cost than have an expensive, fast device that I cannot really customize.
Just my opinion though bro.
For the cost, yep. The KF HDX is cheaper than the N10 was when I looked at the Play Store last week. As for performance issues, just check out Google's product & bug forum, or even the threads here. Horrible touch screen issues for many.
I use a N7 for most things & found myself using the 10" tabs for media consumption. I've had or have nearly every decent 8" to 10.1" tablet made in the last few years & the HDX is by far the best performing tablet I've used. Once gapps are possible, well my large tab search for near perfection is over for a while. Telling you, the SD 800 & Adreno 330 combo is amazing.

I really doubt it.
Nexus phones are usually 2 years apart. Maybe the nexus 5 got released a bit before the 2 year mark.
Tablets are usually staggered 1 year apart. Nexus 7 - Nexus 10 - Nexus 7 2013 and next is the Nexus 10 2014 edition.
I just wish there would be more apps that would more geared toward tablets and there would be more productivity involved. For example the stock calendar is absolutely horrible and there is nothing that really fits tablet and my fancy on google play.
