For this section and this section alone, I would like to propose the following rule changes:
1. You must be a member of XDA for a period of no less than 6 months, and have contributed no less than 100 posts before being permitted to submit something here.
2. You must not resurrect an old thread ("Thread Necro'ing") that has lain dormant longer than 72 hours (3 days) as this can cause some confusion on whether or not a deal is still valid. Most deals posted within this section last 3 days or less, let's let the threads go quiet and stay quiet after they've served their purpose.
I humbly submit these minor changes in an effort to help the Member Found Deals section run a little bit smoother.

I could agree with #2, but I think #1 is pointless. I haven't seen a new member come in here and post anything useless. Why restrict them? I've seen veteran members more often then not come in here and either post stuff they're trying to sell or posting things that aren't really good deals.
I've relayed the information to our mod-team. I am also in support of your second point (not so much the first).
#2 sounds like a great idea.
#1 doesn't work. Why reward the blabber-mouths that make pointless posts and ask the same stupid questions over and over again, while penalizing those that read, use search, and don't clutter up the forums with useless drivel?
I'm glad to see that these recommendations are being discussed at least. The second one got me the other day so that's the one I really wanted to see in-place, however, I threw out the first one to try to alleviate those who're posting sales of their own items. Anyone have a way to address that fairly, any idea at all?
I agree except for #1. It seems to. restricted

yeah, as someone with under 100 posts (but still a 3+ year user) I'm not thrilled about #1. I only post when I need to. We need to encourage people to search out their issues instead of just posting to up their count.
I disagree with number 1. I think that number 2 will be helpful but what about discussions that last longer than 3 days or deals that last longer than 3 days?

A deal is a deal, I don't care who tells me about it.
I agree with number 2, what about adding that OP must add expiration date to the title when applicable, and no posting in thread after?

The expiration date is a great idea. Would the mods agree to just come along and lock threads that are past expiration (or immediately lock those that don't have one?)
would it be ok if the OP bumps a thread if he knows the deal is still live?

Why lock it maybe the OP does not know the expiration date? People could benefit from it. maybe lock it if it is known to be done deal already.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
sometimes ppl follow up on items they bought. locking the thread would stop ppl from doing so.
for example I posted a thread on cheap knock off ps3 controllers. im hoping it will work and pair with my phone. I don't have a ps3. when I receive it I was planning on letting the thread know what was the result. would that be bad?

Let people know how it went in case the same deal pops up. I think there should be an expiration date if applicable else listed as unknown/confirmed dead/confirmed alive.
#1 - I think the consensus on that is no and I agree. As said before, a deal is a deal - it doesn't matter who told me it.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
For number one to stop people from posting deals I say delete op and lock thread instead. That is why they keep doing it because if locked still get deal out there and can get pm's. I also say a tally system were under thanks have "deal interactions" first is warning one tally, second temporary punishment infraction and so on.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
The expiration date is only based on last active post in the thread. If the last active poster was 72 hours ago and you're not responding to a direct question, then that should be considered necro and would be against the rule.

A Dev releases a ROM and post in the Dev Section.
Cool!!
Months later, that Dev has upgraded his ROM 2 3, hell 5 times or lkek now, a new GB OTA is out and another new upgrade.
Is it so hard to just start a new thread??
I HATE that the first post is updated, sometimes barely updated, and then the next 90 pages are about the original release from months ago.....
Half the time, the update log is barely legible (ie. Fixed Cam - well, WHEN!!!?? On WHICH release?? Can you provide a god damn date or something??)\, there's now 27 files to d/l, mods, etc.
XDA has the most brilliant DEVs in the world, and the least organized......
No wonder so many noobs are constantly asking what's the best ROM, etc...

HipKat, I typically agree with you but in this case I have to wonder if you didn't od on your "ungrateful pills" this morning.
My unsolicited advice is: Start developing roms, then make a new thread every time you update the roms you develop.
just a suggestion...maybe when a thread is started and commented on the more recent posts would come to the front. in other words opposite of how it is now. oldest on last page and most recent on first page. the original post would stay on the front page though....

I have Dev'd before, on the Moment:
http://forum.sdx-developers.com/index.php?topic=9644.0
Perfect example though, is the awesome work xHausx has done, but looking at his OP now, it's like wtf is what?? And I'm not being ungrateful, not at all. I'm VERY grateful and appreciative of the work done here, but is that a pass for making it harder to follow?? Magnus starts new threads for all his releases, and that makes it easier for the mentally challenged people, like me... King, too, makes the OP solely about the new release and pushes the older releases down in the thread...
Grrr.. it's just been a bad week....

while I don't necessarily agree with the vehemence of the OP, I can relate.
I wish sometimes there was at least a consistent Thread Title format with date updated info at least. (Examples being Myns, aamikams and virus.)
Just look at date the op was last updated then skip to that date in the thread and start reading. That's what I always do, who am I to complain about what someone is doing for free when they could be doing so many other things.

I think the point is this forum is for all and any improvements to the ease of use, especially for newer folks, is always welcome.
That's why I suggested contacting the user experience admin.
The idea that someone doesn't dev so they should have no input is silly.
That's why I wait a while and let a few people test it and talk about what's new and then try it out myself.

I see your point, but I think it should be a decision made by each Dev. Some prefer to keep all release related posts in one thread. This seems more like a thread format issue. Maybe its the ocd part of me, but I read every post before flashing.

I am new to android as I bought a Tab on release day in the u.s. In my 2 and half months of having the tab and being a member of xda I search the forums quite regularly and I have noticed something. This will make me sound like a real negative person, but I have noticed that the exact same questions get posted time and time again. I don't think a week can go by without someone asking how to get a full wallpaper or if the tab can get Netflix.
So I was wondering how many people do one of two options for forums...
A. When you have a question, do you just post it and wait a day to see if anyone answered it?
B. Or do you search the forums for your answer so you get your question answered in a few minutes of research?

Hummmm.... Search, Search, Search!!!!
But not to defend but, I'm going to bet their are alot of "Noobs" that really have no clue as to what they just got there hands on when buying something like a Tab or have ever even used a forum. I was a long time Mod on a site called MyTreo.net and remember when the Treo 600 came out... So may repost of just about everything from how to send MMS's to why does my battery keep running out. New technologies and new devices will always generate people who have never used a forum to get help. It's all part of the game brother.
I just always try and remember the everyone was a "Noob" at one point. I try to point them in the right direction and remind them to use the search function.

Yes, people don't search... but you have to understand that sometimes people don't know what to search for also, since they are new to a product. So they post the best they can their question/concern. After all this is a forum discussion, where people talk.
When I started to use these forums, I never found what I was looking for as answer.

It does make you sound like a negative person. I really don't mind the repeated questions; many users here are not native English speakers and that can make searching difficult. Another problem is that very few people know how to spell anything correctly, which also makes searching a problem. If the new thread is in the Q+A section, no big deal. Some of us are not power users but we'd like to help new folks when they arrive (just like some folks helped us when we were new).
On the other hand, what really does bother me is when someone creates a new thread complaining about 1) some perceived flaw in the galaxy tab or; 2) some irritation with other users. Even worse is when it's just a rhetorical and self-righteous "question" and is titled something useless and uninformative like "poll."

Sorry to offend you slack04. But if you hate people on this site who ridicule other users then why the attack on me? Isn't that a bit hypocritical?
I was just asking the community their thoughts on the issue. If you look at the forums you will see a wallpaper scaling post and if you scroll down the screen you will see 3 more of the same exact issue. No search is really required. It is just a matter of scrolling down a little bit. I know I have probably asked questions that have already been answered here, but after I searched for an answer. My question was meant as a more philosophical reasoning to searchering forums or just post question.
Hence the title poll. But I guess I could have titled the topic better.

I'm on this forum nightly, usually moving questions to the Q&A. I don't have the time to read every thread in every section, that's why we Mods rely on ''you'' to report off topic, rude, etc. posts; and then we will deal with it accordingly.
Thanks for your concern however. I will try to give this forum a bit more attention. In the meantime, use the reporting system that is in place, if you feel a thread or posts deserves special attention, in keeping with the XDA rules (see sig for link).

One does not ask, one is chosen. (j/k)
You join the XDA IRC and say "ops plz" (repeatedly so they notice it quickly). (j/k, and also I don't even know if there is an IRC).
In any case I do believe the account has to be a certain age and you have to have a certain number of posts (or at least those should be basic criteria).
It's probably in a FAQ somewhere on the site (or if not, should be).

Dude, posting stuff like that is a good way to loose all friends here - nobody likes a self appointed hall monitor. Let the mods do their job, I don't think the policy is to remove every post that might offend someone, it's the tubes; you need to grow a thick skin.
Don't worry, the angst lake will drain once the ICS situation resolves itself - one way or the other. Although, prepare for some awesome gnashing of teeth and wringing of hands if Moto pulls the same stunt they did with the Dext and cancels the update at the last moment.
Well I'll have to admit : I knew the Htc Magic, Htc Touch2, Htc HD2, Samsung Galaxy 10.1v and the Xperia Ray community and the Atrix one is by far the worst. A lot of aggressiveness and unthankful people...

Honestly I don't think this community is all that bad. It's like any other community really, in that you have your good users and bad users.
What would really be neat is to take the regional and economical demographics of all the smartphones and compare them. Then you might have something.
Of course people's standards of good and bad are different as well, so you're always going to have someone complaining. Trust me on this, I'm a goth/industrial DJ and getting everyone in this subculture at the club to be happy is like spitting into an oncoming wind!
I don't say it's hell on earth either...it's just that there is a level of animosity that I never encountered before. Why is that, I don't know...

Then I guess you haven't seen the HTC Hero forum. There most of the fighting is between devs, and the majority of bans, blocks etc. is toward the devs, that dont play together nice...
As for this community, I admit that there are some that dont stop complaining, but as already said, in the beginning it was worst.
The best thing here is that most of the complaining is to Motorola and stinking nVidia (Burn bi$#h burn!!! ), whereas practically all the Atrix forum dwellers pay there respect to the devoted devs.
I think that most of the complains will be gone once Moto will release the ICS update. If they will not release it this community will just die slowly...

Dont' take all I said personal, it was most directly to Mods. I don't know if you want to ban me or do whatever you want with my account Mods but I'm going to tell you the truth...
I feel like you're not doing your Jobs... that's my 2 cents...
If you want I can change the main thread because is causing so many confusion and other things but that's all I had to say in others words.
Well I know XDA its ment for developers.. And they are kind enough to share their hard work with us.. Bringing new life to our devices and more..
Developers always gets piss off about stupid question and or issues reports without providing a logcat... While I'm agree with this.. I'm not agree with XDA letting average noob post in development section.. Looking at the nature of the forum I can not believe there's isn't a way to block a person from posting in development if that person at least doesn't have (3 months and 350 post) in the forums... That's Imho a reasonable period of learning how to be helpful and provide useful information in development area...
I look at the case of Francisco Franco.. I really enjoy his works and support him a lot.. I had his kernels when I had a Gnex and that + cm9 was the best experience of Android for me.. Then I've sold the gnex and bought the note and one of the reasons I came without thinking was franco kernels does support note.. For my surprise he stopped supporting because of the ****ing trolls about a bluetooth issue in the kernel and so we all rest has to pay for it not haven updates anymore...
Recently he came back and one of the very first welcome post was a random noob asking for the bluetooth again. ... And Ffs I don't want to lose Francisco support again... And he was very clear about it..
I think XDA SHOULD block as I said earlier users with the double conditional of (3 month old account and 350 post) from writing on development.. They could read and download but not write..
Any user with those conditions not only be experienced enough to provide a logcat but will be scared of messing in development because he could get banned and lose his hard work in the account.....
That said I think there is no excuses to do so.. Look also to Entropy... I think the guy gotta buy a new keyboard every day raging at Noobs posting bs in cm9/10 developed threads..

Wisdom strong in this post is. Franco is a really good developer and I'm sad he left Note. He used to develop for my old Huawei before he left for GNex and his kernel rocked.
But... One shouldn't take the regular forum trolls too seriously. Just leave them crying in their own **** and move own. There is also the report function here.
I agree with you though that there is way too much idiots in the development forums. Just look at the new JB PA 1.1 thread: couple of first pages just full of posts "how do I install this?" "does this brick my phone!?" etc. So annoying to find the actual bug reports or feedbacks through all the ****. This is because people are way too lazy to actually study anything these days. Everything has to brought to them ready and chewed.
Edit: and there is also this one hero that already bricked his note with JB PA because he didn't care to study stuff before flashing. :banghead:

Just report their posts. The mods are also sick of it and are handing out infractions, IIRC. I have yet to see a noob post again after reporting him, so it works very well.
It seems the original dev section doesn't have the 10 post requirement like the normal dev section. And most spam is from people with one or a few posts. It would definitely help to have that 10 post rule there.

Tbh there should be a read count for how many threads someone has read. That would just be a little hard to measure.

I certainly agree on you with this one. But like in every other forum and the whole internet, you can't really prevent noobs and trolls. Trolls gotta troll man. Kinda hard to filter them out as it will require the mods to check every single day on every single thread with thousands of post on it and obviously that will take full time. Most of us specially moderators do this for a hobby.
Let's just do our part to make the community a better place. That is reporting trolls. Like the other guy said on the 2nd post, let's just click on that little report button and the mods will take care of the rest or you can just ignore the regular forum troll and move on like most of us do. An old internet saying "Don't feed the trolls" ignore them and the average forum troll will just hunt for the next trollable thread and will eventually get tired, while the persistent ones, well let's just keep on clicking the report button and wait for the banhammer to land
The post requirement or the tenureship in the forum is a fantastic idea though. Maybe even the thanks meter/level, like you could post even if you're not 3 months old or don't have 350 posts but if you do have a certain thanks level/meter you could post and access the restricted area of the forums. No one would press the thanks button if you didn't post something useful right?

put categories as "devs" and restrict allowed posts to those people only. then cross referrence the thread to a discussion page for noobs and others to bash each other.
those who wish to post in the dev section should provide a fully working firmware for downloads and testing purposes for the ones designated as "testers" on xda.
i know its a lot of work, but its a solution if the admin will put the political will to it.

Although you have a point here i really don't like the idea. Ok we need to restrict the troll posts but..... once you were a noob too !!!! What we see now is that this site has grown to numbers never seen before. In the early days there were only a handfull users, a few devices and not much to do. Nowadays if you have a problem EVERYBODY refers to this forum from other places. So basicly we have a flood of new, unexperienced, people that just have one big problem: THEY DON'T READ!!!! I've been a member for a long time now, learned a lot just by reading and only post when i think it's usefull to the comunity. Even after all this time i still sometimes ask questions like a noob, should i be blocked???
There is one solution for this problem: NOT allowing to post untill they have at least read a few posts MARKED as an obligation. But i don't think it's possible.
What we see here is the growing of a forum with soo many devices and people, i think about a year or two this will stabelize :laugh::laugh:

Sometimes the trolls you are referring to are actually innocent noobs who are afraid of bricking their new Notes. They just want to double check some crucial things before attempting risky procedures.
Were we not all noobs at one point in our lives?
I know both trolls and noobs can be really frustrating but many of the members here can be quite impatient, responding rudely and degrading the once-friendly community.
I do agree with you though and I definitely think changes need to be made to ensure the development thread remains strictly development related. But I also think changes should be made to some members attitude too.

I abandoned a forum in my country due to "laws /rules" like that. Things were just getting out of proportion that it is impossible to help people there. Unfortunatly the mods over there think that they are god and if you make a reference about this forum or about rooting you will get banned !!!! I don't think that it's the future of this forum..
Restrict some topics to people that have more then xx months or xx posts will help. But i don't think it's possible to do. And what a bout people like me, i only read here, learn and do not post often. I don't have time to make a rom or custom firmware and come here for leasure ??? Am i elegible for seeing everything...... As you see it is very hard to make the choise about who can have full accesws and who doesn't.

Write on development section thread should have some restriction.
And thank meter is one good criteria (just being member since long/posting just certain number of post dont make skilled)
if member have at least 10-20 thank meter he/she must have some skill and may not post noob Q.
There is always Q/A section is open for newbies.
this needs to be said.....
i have to call you out on this. The OP has been posting bizarre and rambling questions in DEV threads, getting all pissed off when ppl ask him not too, and has even admitted to not wanting to bother reading the thread because he is not that stupid.
It is people LIKE YOU that are bringing this place down.
If you cant be bothered searching or reading, you DO NOT BELONG on a development website. end of story.
If you want to make your phone look pretty to impress your mates, go some place else. XDA is all about the journey - the end result is not so important. its about trying things yourself and sharing knowledge. If you are just lucky enough, you might even be able to help someone out!
do not come here to whinge and flame others when you break the rules (do NOT post in a dev thread if it is not directly related to the development of that thread).
Also, you have to wonder how a user of 4 months has over 1000 posts, and some members have been here for years with only 500 posts.....

So? When I was uncertain about something I posted it in either the general or Q/A section. Why the hell should anyone be posting questions in the dev section?
And no, despite contrary belief, some people are newbies, some people are noobs. Not everyone used to be a noob. There is a massive void between the two. A newbie is one that is self-learning and is capable of exercising some semblance of common sense with regards to forum rules and forum etiquette when he joins a new forum.
So please, if you want to consider yourself a noob at one point, go right ahead. But do not make sweeping statements that everyone was a noob.

I think XDA should do nothing here.
There are no real reasons to rage at some users posts.
There's nothing SO bad about it.
You can always press 'report' button if some super-mega-trolls come to your thread (I haven't seen any yet)
As for me, XDA community is currently not so friendly as it should be.
Devs raging at most of the posts, advanced users trolling noobs...
That's really not so nice.
Blocking users with small post count or small thanks count, etc is unacceptable in my opinion. Really.
Maybe XDA is meant for developers, but developers can't exist without users they are developing for.
Here is Example, why we should need some control

This I agree, sometimes it's not that they're noob, it's that they're kiasu, as we Singaporeans call it. They spam devs with stupid questions, since it's free to ask anyway, and expect people to be free 24/7 to reply.
Also, many devs hate XDA. Because much dev work is not being appreciated here. In the Acer Iconia A500 section, both devs "Thor2002pro" and "dexter_nlb" have made amazing contributions to the community, but many *******s don't appreciate what they have done. They have left subsequently.

I agree completely. I'm not trolling with that statement either.
Honestly, now that we have 2 mods another thread COULD be opened. The probability of conflict due to misunderstandings, differences of opinion and, perhaps for some, dislike of a fellow member or members is still pretty high.
XDA stands for something special. It's a community of people trying to advance its knowledge through helping and sharing. Sometimes egos, not excluding mine, get inflated and the perceived need to stand up for what one feels is right becomes too much to let lie.
Sometimes people just throw out bait to see who bites. These instigators are known as "trolls."
The latter is frowned upon, but not necessarily wrong, as long as things aren't pushed too far. The former, well, good luck with that one. Remember that one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter. Doing something wrong just to do it is not ok. Doing something wrong because you feel you are fighting for something important is another story. There is the letter of the law, and the spirit in which the law is written.
Again, I'm honestly NOT trolling.
The few should not be allowed to ruin it for the many.
It would be a great day for our XDA community if our senior moderators would embrace this philosophy and push for this change.

I, for one am guilty of standing up for myself on here. Take it or leave it. I don't let stuff ride. I'm not here to get respect or gain popularity. I do all that I do for fun and to give back. I'm known as a cocky s.o.b but I'm also known to help a fellow member out as much as my knowledge allows. I've spent numerous hours on talk, pm's and email helping people out that just quite can't get it. The thing that just makes me mad is when you see plain stupidity in your face. For example, I've seen at least a dozen people ask "Where is the low mic fix?" when if the person would search or read back 5 pages you'd find the answer. Back when this Glacier thread started you wouldn't even think of asking a question in the dev section without searching at least 10 times and if you asked such a dumb question you would get reprimanded and issued a infraction and your comment deleted. If I would get on someone now, they'd call me names and blah, blah, blah and the poop tossing would begin. The other day I was speaking out against what I thought was unfair in the general section and I don't take back any of it but to have me censored while idiots actually crowd the dev section with questions really made me mad. I have a change of heart now because the moderators are now getting back to the days of old and doing something about the useless posts. +1 to them. I completely agree with you, I think part of it is people want the cool new stuff without actually reading and learning a thing or two; while it's understandable that you may not have time to look things up, we say these things for the benefit of users themselves. Trust me, the benefits of looking up things on your own and asking after you feel you've searched your ass off are far more greater than just being told everything. Going from releasing a port, to building from source, to being asked by awesome to join team inferno and learning some github all within my first few months of developing on my first and only android phone; I'd say I'm pretty good proof of how effective doing a bit of research is (seeing as I had no prior knowledge on how to do ANYTHING but flash a rom). It's not like you're being asked to read a 700 page documentation on the android system... and although better moderation required us to lose our BS thread and possibly some infractions to some long-time users, it's good that we're starting to get that old sense of moderation back...
tldr; XDA isn't here to hold your hand (so don't assume it is), but if you put some time into reading and learning the benefits are basically limitless.

i agree. the stupidity around here is just amazing. take the most recent one i've seen for example. i'm not going to name any names, but you know who you are.
this guy comes around and posts a question in the General Section. that's already a mistake. who doesn't know that Questions go in the Q & A Section? and then, since he didn't get any answers, he ventures on over to the Development Section, literally picks a random thread, and posts his question there. his question has NOTHING to do with what the topic is about. completely unacceptable. and then, when another forum member tells him that he shouldn't do that, what does he do? he goes on calling names. hey man, it's not our fault you have no respect for others. all this person could've done was just SEARCH. Google it, Bing it, Yahoo it, i don't care, you could've at least SEARCHED before you asked. yeah okay, maybe if you had only a few post counts, then i would forgive you, but no, this is a Senior Member, with over 200 posts! things like this shouldn't even happen from such an "experienced xda user". and i'm seeing things like this more and more everyday, not just in in Glacier forums, but pretty much everywhere else. noobs come along with only a few posts, and they see that they need 10+ posts to post in the Development Sections. so what do they do? they spam all the other sections and threads until they get more than 10 posts, then they begin spamming the Development Sections with their stupid questions that could've been answered by a search. and that's not all. since they can't spam the Development Sections with under 10 posts, they spam the DEVELOPER'S PMS. i have over 1000 PMs in my inbox, i'd say over 3/4 of them are useless garbage asked by idiots who are too lazy to search.
now about the off topic threads:
i really like the idea, it's a great way for forum members to hang out and have friendly chats for one another, but one thing i had noticed going on in the old BS Thread was that noobs with less than 10 posts would come here and post until they get 10 posts. i actually even read some other posts that encouraged this action. so while the off topic threads are great, they also have downsides to them as well.
IMO, we should just make it that you can only post in the Q & A Section until you have a certain amount of posts, cause honestly, most of the first few posts are just plain stupid questions that can be answered, by a simple search.
