Hi there,
is there a way to get the Tablet UI without changing the DPI? I just changed it to 160 and eveything is really, really small Too small for my taste. So I was wondering if there is a way to get the Tablet UI without shrinking everything down?

But I didn't tried it yet.
Team EOS's nightly ROM's have a toggle for changing the systembar setup (from phatblet to tablet), but this doesn't activate system-wide tablet UI.
Are you rooted. I am running the latest AOKP and it has Tablet UI baked in.

I use Paranoid Android which allows you to use tablet ui with a dpi of your choice.
I use 190.

You can apply barrmullio's tabletUI code changes on any deodexed rom in the Dev section using my tool the autopatcher.
The tool works on CM10, AOKP and AOSP, and their derivative roms. It can be run on any PC, OSX, Linux or Windows. There is a GUI for Windows, but OSX and LInux will need to enter ONE command on the command-line.
I own a Nexus 7, so I added a bunch of the most useful code changes for our device to the tool.
No dpi ot build.prop edits needed, no market issues at all.
Curious about text size. I'm not rooted and think text on many apps is way small. If changing to 160 makes it smaller, can I assume changing it to 240 makes it bigger? Moon Phase Pro, and Amazon Appstore are 2 in particular that I find difficult to read.
Everything is much larger on my 5" screen Galaxy Player.

yeap. they will be bigger but I think a lot bigger, since stock dpi is 213.
Thanks a lot guys! I used Barmullios mod linked by Glimmling, doing just what I want.
I'm curious as to how smooth/buggy ParanoidAndroid is as compared to stock. Can anyone comment as to how ParanoidAndroid has improved their experiences with their Nexus 7? I personally love stock and want to stay on it, but after seeing the full tablet mode, smaller options, more/less DPI, etc., I definitely want to try it out... However, as others have stated, I'm hesitant to go to CM10 (the only feature I enjoy from CM10 is the quick settings, but that's coming in 4.2).
How stable is it? Is the DPI settings and full Tablet mode that worth it? Etc.?
Thanks.
Been using PA since I got my nexus 7.. stock rom interface just doesnt feel right to me anymore.. its pretty stable depending on which kernel u use for it,,

I have been using PA for a few days and I have not had any problems with it. I can recommend it!
Will PA offer an update that includes 4.2? I'm debating waiting to see until 4.2 comes out.
I briefly tried PA and got hung up on not being able to remove dual view in the settings menu. Not a big fan of it since I almost always use my N7 in portrait mode. Also I don't like the semi tablet UI with the blue boxes around the home screens when moving.
I was very curious in trying it out but those minor details kind of killed it for me. I am currently running XenonHD which works great. I liked how PA has the DPI changes but I like my stock phablet mode so no real reason for me to swap just yet. Has potential IMO otherwise.

To remove dual pane in settings, go to paranoid settings/apps/ look for the settings app and set the layout to 360px. You can also do the same with trebuchet i think to return the launcher to phablet ui
I try out Paranoid everytime it has an update, but I always end up returning to stock.
Overall I prefer it to stock, but wifi gets to laggy after awhile to the point of being unusable.
I tried different kernels all with the same result. When I revert to stock...problem goes away.
I've tried every rom available. I like PA for my N7 because it's one of the most stable roms. I've been using it since August. The dev is very good about updates since it's CM based.

I've just upgraded to Android 4.2 and noticed the lack of tablet ui when I changed the DPI.
Is there any watt till get it back or has it been fully removed? I loved the old UI.

Yeah, WTF happened? Just did the same. 160 dpi with the 213 dpi gui? No thanks.
the update has unified the tablet UI... look at the nexus 10 and you will see you are now running the "tablet' UI. there is no split in UI like there was before (ie. no tablet and phablet difference)
Of course there are changes in 160dpi. It's not the same as 213, Youtube is still totally different, market, gmail. Just navigation and notification bar are splited. But Yeah, old ui was much better. There is too much wasted space in new UI
Hopefully some custom ROMs will add this in. Its a shame, I used to be able to operate with almost one hand and now I need the other to use the notifications. Some things were added tipi the top right quick settings but I really want it on the bottom.

That's exactly what I suspected, no tablet UI included. I am definitely won't update to this. Let's hope the community will fix that.
They're doing away with the old tablet UI to unify the devices.
-Brought to you by Marino's Galaxy Nexus-
Yeah, and that is dumb as hell in my opinion!
i dont think it is necessarily dumb. i believe it is important to not have a split experience when it comes to your OS. If you want something different that is what custom ROMs are for. But for what google is putting out they want everyone to have a similar experience no matter what device they are on. that way going from your phone to a tablet is more natural
Using Tablet UI, I experienced accidentally pressing the Nav buttons and expanding the status bar while playing games. I think keeping the buttons away from where the fingers will accidentally press them is not dumb at all. I hope they find a better way to implement Tablet UI.
When I saw that the Nexus 10 had the new UI, I feared that this would happen.
Just flashed 4.2 and it was such a pity to discover that there's no tablet ui (( I liked it so much

Seems tablet ui is being worked on for 4.2...
Here's some files you can beta test:

Let me know (or better yet, the dev), if they work.

Now we can have multiple user accounts on our Nexus 7... I'm wondering if it's possible to have one user running at 213 dpi and another at 160 dpi, so have different resolutions per user?
I read it's a change to the system build properties file in a thread about tablet UI, so I imagine it wouldn't be that hard for some savvy person to write a script to swap that at user logon, like in a .profile or similar, if android has those. I guess it must run as root, which is surely achievable on a rooted device... :fingers-crossed:
Key Lime Pie
Hopefully Google will figure something out for Key Lime Pie, unified UI is good for noobies but power users like us want something more and that's why we went with android.
Hey all,
Now, I have done the searching, and found the thread about getting tablet UI on my Nexus 7, It looks nice and I'll probably end up using it... However, I like the way the UI is laid out on the Nexus 10...
Now, I know that the 7 will switch to landscape mode and look similar, however, I want the App Drawer and associated buttons to be across the bottom and the google search bar to be across the top like the 10, as opposed to the sides on the 7.
Now, I understand that the N10's screen is a higher resolution, but I figure if anyone has figured it out, it'd be someone here at xda.
So, my question is, has anyone figured out how to do this yet?
Are you running 4.2?
If you're running version 4.2 or over and don't mind having slightly smaller icons, I would recommend changing your DPI from 213 to 160 in /system/build.prop
Of course you will have to be rooted to do this, but this would be worth trying and should give you what you're looking for .
If you're running 4.1.2 maybe try this this method also (as I can't remember the layout when you change your DPI on 4.1.2, and you can always change it back). If not, try some launchers from the Play Store like Apex or Nova.
Hope this helps.
I'd very much like the Nexus 10 landscape on my Nexus 7 as well. Right now, the Nexus 7 landscape looks like a hack for me. It doesn't even look tablet-ish. Anxiously seeking solutions.
I tried what Fuzone suggested and it worked just fine... Needed to adjust some widgets and whatnot but other than that it's good. That is if you don't mind the smaller icons.

Nova Launcher Prime paired with paranoid rom = profit... Lower DPI with paranoid and increase rows and columns with nova if you play around with nova launcher settings you can achieve this... make launcher horizontal instead of vertical in landscape mode too in settings etc etc
please try this patch. you can have the TRUE tablet UI like Nexus 10.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=28957307
your device should be rooted before flashing the patch, of course

Possibly silly question. How does the N10 UI / N7 tablet patch differ from dpi switch to 160 on N7 ?
I am asking from a visual standpoint, not technical....

This worked for me on 4.2.1. Flash the proper file (odexed/deodexed) tablet UI from your favorite recovery. The launcher is messed up but Nova Launcher free clears it up. See post number 912 in the following link.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1780970&page=92
While you're there, grab the appropriate stock UI file because the Nexus will not OTA update with the mod installed. Also, if you're running an earlier OS, there are files like these for 4.2 and 4.1.2 earlier in the topic.

Not likely. According to ParanoidAndroid's G+ page, Google has "wiped out" the whole TabletUI code, they don't plan on adding it back.

So we must wait for AOKP update
What's so special about tablet UI anyway? Install apex launcher and it'll put it there, but I've tried it and I really don't see the big deal behind it.
Sorry, it's an irrelevant post. But yeah, google has made tablet ui a thing of the past.

The only thing special is the unified notifications bar and navigation bar. that gives you back some screen real estate. Right now - especially in landscape - 7" tablets waste a ton of space.
Plus the tablet format in stuff like settings and play store. The apex version sucks, not much besides the app drawer and search in the upper corners. I like KitKat, but miss tablet ui, anxious for someone to make it happen!
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
The special about #TabletUI was that (1) less sceen real estate was wasted and (2) one-hand operation ergonomics were improved on larger screen devices (i.e anything bigger than 4.8-5'') Why Google decided to remove that..is beyond me. Not the only bizarre UI decision in KitKat.
I'll be sticking with JB for as long as I can under the circumstances.
Yeah, looks like I'll be downgrading back to 4.3 for the time being. Phablet UI is ugly.

You can turn on tablet ui on kitkat. I'm using CM11 mod but probably it will work on standard rom as well. Just change lcd from 213 to 160 manually in buil.prop and reboot device. I have also changed the number of colums to 6 and set number of rows to 5 and everything looks perfect...

Now apparently this guy managed to get the tablet ui working on an early KitKat build with xposed. I've tried it on a newer build and it doesn't work. I'm going to try it later with the earliest KK build I can find but I suggest you guys try it on your device as well.
