[Q] Win8 Installation, Delete to save space? - Windows 8 General

Well, I downloaded Win8 Installation from net (64 and 32 bit) and I have 4GB USB which is 3.72 GB in practical. So, the size of iso is 3.82 GB.
Can I delete some files to squeeze that 100MB to put it on the USB?
Frustration level: Over 9000

That would actually be 100MB
dodge business hacking away at files if you don't know what they are, the 32bit files are only just over 2GB, the 64 are just over 3GB, I don't know why yours is so high, my 64 bit files are 3.3GB...

Download deamon tools lite and then u can run it without burning or putting it on a flash drive.

Ouch, consider burning it to a DVD if that's an option for you. Windows 7 can burn DVD natively.
Otherwise, when you're done with Daemon Tools you can uninstall it. Windows 8 can mount .isos without the need of extra applications

As long as you start the installation from windows/deamon tools it will start copying all necessary files to the disk. After the restart the iso is no longer used, thus you shouldn't have any issues.

The correct way to format the SD card

In ubuntu do you just format
the card as FAT?

So many users are having issues with sod screen freezes WiFi not working correctly and so on. The problem is the card has more than just apps on the ext extension on the card. Every one says to format the card with Windows which is fine. But one problem persists Windows can't see the ext extension which is a Linux format. And reminents of the build file system are on that too. Remember not all builds play nice with each other. So the best way to format the SD would be with a Linux disto like ubuntu so you can format the fat and ext extensions and voila all you're problems go away. You can do this with a live cd version from WWW.ubuntu.com so no need to install ubuntu just run the live cd without installing.

Could you explain a little about what this does and how and why it is better to format with linux first? Thanks!
Or you could use Paragon Partition Manager.
I've had no SOD's, screen freezes, etc.

Yes I guess I should have asked what is the
"ext extension". Could not find anything on google except a file extension used by Norton, and I know that is not what you mean.
Also you say
"you can format the fat and ext extensions". Does that mean that in ubunto I do more than just format with FAT. I should do another step for the extensions? Sorry I don't know much about linux.

The ext extension. You need to do this with linux. Do I format with FAT only in ubunto or also one of the other format options? Thanks!
I downloaded and burned ubunto to a cd. Loaded it and formated the SD with FAT. I then re-booted windows and formated with regular windows format. I am now coping my backup to the SD. Were these the correct steps?
If you have a Mac I used Disk Utility and formatted it (FAT) Then I went to partition and did 1 Partition. When I just formatted I couldnt boot android thats why I partitioned

This thread is one giant collection of bull****
There is no "ext extension" unknown to windows, what you'll probably mean is a linux swap partition which isn't created on the sd card itself, it creates a virtual filesystem in a file.
There is only one correct way to optimally format your sd card, and that is in one partition with the FAT32 filesystem. How you accomplish this is up to yourself, any tool/OS is perfectly capable of doing that.
Please stop misinforming people!

Now that shows your stupidity Linux swap is a swap file partition made by Linux which isn't visible on Windows either so stop trolling because apparently you don't know what your talking about go ahead fire up Windows and see if you can see the extensions partitions you won't then fire up Linux and there they are and yes I use Windows and Linux and MAC if you don't believe this ask any Dev on here and tell set you straight probably wouldn't answer you anyway since you don't know ****.

[Q] Use custom iso on sd card for VCD

Is there a way to use a custom ISO on the sd card as the iso which is loaded when the droid 2 is plugged in to a pc? I just rooted the droid 2... I am thinking maybe a symlink might work but I am not sure.
My ultimate goal is to eliminate the need to carry cds and dvds around for booting to live cd environments.
Thanks,
Chris
PS: sorry if this is in the wrong forum. I am new here .

I don't think that this would be possible, as it would require the card to be mounted by the phone and by the computer at the same time. I have used my phone to install OSX, but that required the bootable files to be stored on a USB flash drive.
That sucks....
By chance is there a VCD apk avail for android?

[Q] Format HD completely is recommended?

Hi guys.
I think I'm posting in the wrong place, move the threads, please.
I've got an HD SATA with 3 partitions, 2 primary and 1 logical (Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bits, Windows 8 Consumer Preview 32 bits and a partition for music)
The instalation of Win8 took 3 hours.
I don't think is the HD whose is the problem, but I wanna format my HD.
Is recommended format per completely, or just the primary partitions?
Thanks

formatting the whole thing or just the partition will make no difference so save the hassle and just nuke the win 8 partition
3 hours is a LONG time though something isn't right there
redownload the iso and setup a usb install
The primary is all that is needed , so if you have other partitions dont worry about them, I just installed Win 8 64 bit last night , it wouldnt install over a previous primary , so I formated the primary (with mbr) and it took less time to load than any other copy of Windows Ive ever used ! I love it !!

No, formatting will make no change in install time, however if you have a slow read or write device in the system that could be a problem. You could also have the a problem with your processor or drivers messing things up. When I installed Windows 8 on my HP ZD7249CL it took about an hour and a half because windows 8 couldn't find any drivers for it and when it did, it then felt the need to install them but say that it couldn't us them because they were not compatible with the OS.

[Q] ISO or Windows Setup programme?

I have an Acer W500 with a fresh install of Windows 7 and want to upgrade to Windows 8
Can anyone tell me the pros and cons for either upgrading using the ISO on a bootable USB as against downloading and using the setup programme?
I would like a clean install, no dual boot and there is no software already on the tablet that I want to keep.
Thanks

I have found one issue. If you try to run setup from within Windows 7 you must have at least 16GB free the C Drive. As the Acer W500 comes with a 32GB SSD drive that is a non starter.
So it is ISO on a USB boot disk for me.

Partition Table

Has anyone been able to get access to the partition table of the G2? I ask because I use only 1 of the 3.5 GB partitioned for the system ROM and would like to use the remaining as internal storage. If not, how likely is it for someone to gain access to it on this device?

This has been discussed before, and the conclusion was that it is way too risky to mess with the partitioning of the device for just 3.5 gb extra space. Hence the "Just stop" from the person above.
You can expand your storage through an OTG flash drive - check this out: meenova.com

I could really do with that 3.5 gb myself, i have about 8 GB of music on my device, If i take more than about 3 short 1080p clips. BOOM, storage full!
Keep in mind that some firmwares rely upon exact partition sizes to work correctly, and that altering those partitions may end up bricking your device.
This isn't just some warning to keep novice users from bricking their devices by accident, it's a legitimate issue where the benefits don't outweigh the risks.
