First offerings are typically missing things found on more robust devices. Think of the original iPhone--no native apps, MMS, GPS, copy/paste, multitasking, camera, 3G, etc. or the G1 or whatever.
Both iOS and Android started out on devices that were missing a lot of common features but now they are top of the line. I'm more interested in how WP7 looks in a year or two.

I think times have changed. WP7 has to be fully featured now. Smartphones are here, they are mainstream, and they are big business.
Turns out this information might not be correct just yet, here's what I found:
Here's what one can read on Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 portal:
“Some Windows Phones have a Secure Digital (SD) card that's used to expand the amount of storage space on the phone. If your phone has one, it's in an SD card slot underneath the battery cover on the back of your phone.
Windows Phone uses a special high–performance SD card that works differently than SD cards in other devices. When your phone is built and first set up, its internal storage and SD card are combined and recognized as one storage system.
Warning
You should not remove the SD card in your phone or replace it with a new one because your Windows Phone won't work properly. Existing data on the phone may be lost, and that SD card can't be used in other devices or Windows Phones.”
It kind of sounds like they just want to keep people from jailbreaking/flashing/rooting their phones, but maybe it's what they say.

i take that back so far only 1 phone had a sdcard slot its the Focus all others are packing 16gigs of internal space

Windows Phone 7 has both good and bad, but to be honest, I like it a whole lot better in it's first release than I did with Android when it was first released.
One thing I like a lot, which I know a lot will disagree with, is (some of) the hardware standards. All WP7 phones, as far as I can tell, run the same old generation Snapdragon in the EVO (and even further back to 2009, the HD2). Yet the games and UI look great and run smooth. Having a standard level of specs means that it is easier to build a OS that will run as intended on all devices. With Android it's hit or miss; get a entry level Android phone and things will draaaaggg, get a high end phone without the latest and greatest CPU/GPU (EVO) and things will still not be 100% smooth. Google just can't optimize the experience for all these devices like Microsoft can -- and don't forget as a licensed OS, dev support comes attached.
The SD card thing is CERTAINLY LAME, I mean, what does that achieve? But the benefits to me are clear: WP7 will run smooth across the board; and with similar hardware and Microsoft support, updates will probably come A WHOLE LOT FASTER than what we get on Android.
I personally want to give WP7 a try, it's still missing a couple of important features (multi-tasking for third party media being the key thing). But the Office + Zune + Xbox Live integration looks better than anything comparable on Android, and as a designer who like smart minimalism, the Metro UI is perfect.
...and did you see the Touch Pro 7 coming to Sprint? That's the phone I was waiting for.

Hmm.. Perhaps. Windows Mobile did almost everything Android does, only in a less intuitive/attractive way. Windows Phone 7 is an entirely different beast, and although the core is similar/upgraded, the UI/UX is entirely new. But still, there's no doubt that I'm interested.

I'm not denying that it looks promising. I just was commenting that it's not the first entry into the mobile market. There has been a lot of trial and error to get there, just like every OS.

Debian running on my Evo Shift with XFCE GUI. (New beautiful images :) )

After a few issues, I am happy to say that a full install of Debian is running on my shift (with CM7 ROM). Moreover, I can use Android VNC to have a GUI. I attached a few pictures of the software I have been able to run so far
It is too much for me to write up a how to, but if anyone wants to ask some questions, feel free.

It is a full Linux distribution running side-by-side with android. This has been possible since the G1 days, but is different for each phone, and no clear instructions really exist.

I had this running before with some modifying of the hero script, but once my data hit full, I couldn't run it after putting some apps on the sdcard. Froyo moves apps to the sdcard in loop form, and once I got bash and a working a vim on android, I quit messing with it since those extra loop devices interfered with it

I actually installed it myself, and put it on an ext3 partition on my sdcard (5GB currently). I am going to go buy a 32GB sd in order to run more.

It would not be too hard to get Fedora working, but I really do not like it, so would rather not spend any time on it. Compiz will install (tried it yesterday) but I am not able to get it running right now.

You said you wouldn't be writing up a how-to, but would you be willing to help me out with some sort of resource/starting on where I could read up on this and start figuring it out? I remember the guy over at Nexus One Hacks who accomplished this with Ubuntu on the Nexus as well as on the G2. Would I be correct to assume your method is at least similar (in my very limited understanding) to his since you mentioned accessing the GUI through VNC?
Also, how's it running for you? What I mean is, now that you've got it working, are you able to get some real work done in Debian from the phone, or is it still pretty much just a proof-of-concept for this sort of hardware?

That would be quite a waste of resources and unncessary taxing.
@DWake - It's a linux operating system within android, like a normal desktop OS.
@OP - You just chrooted into it/setup loop devices right? I did something similar earlier this year with ubuntu(I was following another devices image/stuff, I personally wouldn't pick anything with a gui installed)

ICS USB is not a bug.

I'm not sure if anyone has posted about this before, but I'd like to bring this up.
"Galaxy Nexus does not support USB Mass Storage. However, it supports MTP and PTP. Also, it is not a problem with ICS. ICS still supports UMS
Why did Galaxy Nexus stopped supporting UMS? - They wanted to have no partition for the Memory available. That is the full 32 GB/16 GB is available for everything - music storage, apps, pics, docs, etc.

Since these roms are built off of source, it's almost like having the Galaxy Nexus version of ICS (aside from on screen buttons obviously). I'm assuming we'll continue to see USB File Transferring once we get the official OTA but at least we know this technically isn't a bug.

I love it!!! I can plug my phone into my pc and use the storage from both pc and my phone at the same time without unmounting usb It's great!!

I ended up finding a mod for the on screen buttons for oICS. So I get the benefit of on screen buttons without setting up another ROM. So happy. Showed it off all day.

Not to hijack the thread, but what did you set your LCD size to? I did the recommended 210 but it made the keyboard too small for me.

I was on AOSP's ICS rom for a couple of hours this morning (v13) and every time I plugged it in, Win7 64bit Ultimate popped up with a different prompt, and different "drive system" (best way to describe it). Still had full access to ALL of my files, but it was easier to navigate, and no "click me 4 times to enable USB storage".
Was very nice, and makes me VERY eager to get back to ICS once it is a bit more stable (going to re-flash v13 now just to see if all of the fun problems I was having were because of a bad flash)

Maybe swype makes the difference. Although looking at it now I wonder if the keyboard size isn't a psychosomatic problem.
To stay on topic, I love that the phone doesn't mount as a USB device anymore. At work they have a gpo that disables the mass storage device driver on Windows, and now I can mount my phone files again.

wifi is a bit wonky still connect in settings then just leave it will continue to loop on connecting if settings is open for some reason

This is the way it is in 4.2 onward. Google is unifying the look so it functions the same no matter what screen size (like everyone's favorite fruity rounded rectangles). It's Matias Duarte's vision for the UI. Personally, I have no real issues with it, and I'm sure CM or AOKP will bring back the old functionality.

I read somewhere that android 4.2 changes something in the render script. I know that this changes somehow the performance of 3d, does someone knows if this can relate to our egl leak? If yes, how does it affect performance and the random reboots we have been having?

Could you also have a look at internal storage support? It moved all of my internal sd content into 0 folder.

This isn't a bug. It is how 4.2 handles multiplte users on a single device.

I dont think so, i think hes doing them game by game at the moment.....not like traditional emulators, but you never know, maybe some point down the line, if its technically possible......which to me, its seems like all the ingredients are there.
From what i understand hes figured out a way to convert x86 ?binaries? on the fly [JIT], to something arm can understand, and bypassing some[all?] of the emulation and saving some of the processing power that normally gets used by that emulation. Is that a first for android emulation technique?i dont know

Alright for fans of ceasar 3, looks like the beta's now available on the playstore, bugs have already been reported and a new update is in the process of being pushed to the market, so hopefully that helps.

I played it some last night on my note. The S-pen makes it a lot easier to navigate through the menus in the game. The only thing I didn't like was the always touch the screen was a left click. I accidently destroyed some buildings because I had the shovel selected and built some in places I didn't want to since its a little hard to position exactly since it builds right away. But as far as performance I played for about 30 minutes and only used 5% battery and it ran perfect. No lag or slow downs. Loads up fast. You do have to put the games on built in sdcard since the program only seems to scan for games there and its not configurable.

5% in 30 minutes, thats impressive......thats a total average of 10 hours playtime, not to shabby........although i suspect different games will vary depending on how graphic intensive they are
Glad to hear it runs smoothly, saw one or two videos, and was wondering if the whole game played as smooth, glad to hear it does
