Yes sir. I reccomend you get the Nexus 4 from the play store, get the t-mobile sim card from online.
Go to the google search monthly 4g prepaid plain. XDA forums doesn't let me link the site -.-. Sorry.
Scroll down to the 30$ plan, 100 minute, unlimited text, 5GB DATA up to 4G after that it's capped down and it's unlimited. I use that.
They don't offer it in stores, make sure you buy the sim and activate it online.
- Zam

I'm using that plan right now on my GNex, speeds are pretty OK, I usually get about 5-6 Mb/s if I have decent coverage.
I think you can get the sim card and plan in Walmart too.

Is it possible to roam on straight talk or tmobile prepaid plans? I live in an area with poor cell coverage

Solavei a T-Mobile MVNO.
They include roaming, 4GB of data, unlimited calls and text. Also conditional call forwarding for Google voice works.
Video I did recently:

Remember the nexus 4 will get double the download speeds in most areas on T-Mobile with Napa dual carrier. The galaxy nexus does not support dual carrier.
I have them now on my gnex. Getting 5-7 Mbps.

Great video! I've been doing research into the different MVNOs myself and this video did a great job of answering all the questions I wanted answered.

Does anybody know with certainty whether solavei gives full tmobile speeds? I had the $30 plan for awhile and got 21mbps at my house. Would solavei throttle that at all or should I expect to see the same speeds?

How to signup Nexus 4 with Solavei
I tried to signup my Nexus 4 with Solavei but their website says that my phone's IMEI is not compatible and does not let me go further.
I talking to one of their independent reps I was told the company hasn't updated their log of IMEI #s to reflect the new Nexus 4 phones; however, the nexus 4 WILL work on their tmobile network just like any other GSM phone, especially since the last generation nexus is compatible. The IMEI check on their website is only so that they can ship you the correct size sim card (It is a micro-sim in the case of the Nexus 4). Here are the steps I took:
1. To begin signup of your Nexus 4 use this link.
2. Enter your zip to confirm coverage
3. [Important] Use the following IMEI # to get past the first step: 353022055115650 . This IMEI ensures you get the micro-sim card instead of a full-size sim.
4. Solavei asks if you want to port a phone # or have them choose a phone # for you.
5. Solavei asks for the usual personal information
6. Solavei mentions that it will be shipping you a "sim" but does not go into detail whether it is a micro-sim or not. Don't worry. The IMEI # you used earlier ensures it is a micro-sim.
7. Finish the process and a micro-sim card will be shipped out to you within 2 business days
Hope that helps. From what I was told by several reps, Solavei customers get the same 3g/4G coverage as regular Tmobile customers, but speeds begin to be throttled after 4 gigabytes of usage. 4 gigs is personally plenty for me considering the cheaper price.

Where do you see 4GB at on their site? All I saw was that it was unlimited. They seem no different than Straight Talk which is even cheaper than Solavei at $45/month and from my understanding with ST the cap can go as high as 7GB or more..probably depending on local congestion.

A couple different reps have told me that they throttle after 4 gigabytes. 4 Gigs of 4g speed is plenty for me considering I also use wifi at home and work. And living in South Florida Tmobile 4g is very good. It all depends on your area.

My contract with AT&T ends in March and I plan on leaving them because I get no signal at school or at work. I will probably end up signing up with Solavei.
Thanks for the info.

I'm really interested in switching to this phone and the T-Mobile $30 plan. I've been using a Motorola Triumph with Virgin Mobile @ $25 a month for unlimited text/data and 300 minutes, so the T-Mobile plan seems almost the same but with better coverage and less minutes (I don't even use my minutes).
I also have no idea what this Solavei thing is either. From what I'm guessing, all I need to do is buy the Nexus 4 from Google (or anywhere else that has it unlocked), buy the T-Mobile SIM card from their site, then sign up by buying a $30 plan/card from Walmart or Target. Does anyone have detailed instructions like what ztmike posted about Solavei? Or should I be signing up through Solavei anyway?
Thanks a bunch, guys.

Best SIM based 3G prepaid network?

I'm looking for a cheap prepaid network based with GSM so that I can get off my family's plan once out contract is up and save them some money. I want to buy an unlocked Note or Nexus to use on the network. Mainly all I want is a decent amount of Data (2GB would work fine cause I hardly even use half a gb a month on Sprint), unlimited texting(I text alot), and maybe around 450 minutes for calling. Plus I want to be able to keep the phone number I have now. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, and any links to websites with details would be even better. Thanks in advance!

That was exactly my thing; left my family's Sprint plan for Straight Talk AT&T and absolutely loving it. Unlimited text, Unlimited minutes, and psuedo-Unlimited data (Over 2GB is getting into cancellation territory, but with you're usage you're more than safe). About $50 a month after taxes. Make sure you pick "AT&T Compatible SIM" when you buy from http://straighttalk.com so you get AT&T coverage. The SIM will work in unlocked phones or locked AT&T phones (it pretends to be an AT&T SIM). So even a locked iPhone would work. I've had no issues with them so far and been with them for a month. Getting full HSPA+ speeds, which is anywhere from 2-5 Mbps on average. But depending on where you are you might get more (HSPA+ tops off at 21 Mbps). You can port your number over. Don't cancel with Sprint though otherwise your number will be gone. You port the number on Straight Talk's end and then your Sprint line will be cancelled. I personally ported my number to Google Voice and use that to forward to whatever number Straight Talk gave me, so I can dial in and out with my real number. And I use the Voice app for texting and voicemail. Works great because then you can text from your real number from your computer or tablet too

I've been thinking about either Straight Talk with ATT SIM, or T-Mobile's prepaid service. Not sure. I really haven't done my research on which carrier has better service in my area. If T-Mobile has better service, I'm going with their prepaid plan due to a higher data limit (I believe I can get a 5GB limit, the reason why I don't use much data on Sprint is due to the horrible data speeds. Still have to look into the details on that.)

If you're referring to T-Mobile's $30 plan with 5 GB of data and unlimited texting, it only includes 100 minutes. Plus you're pretty limited on phone selection if you plan on using international phones since they mostly use AT&T's 3G/4G bands.

I plan on the Nexus devices, and i know that the Galaxy Nexus plays well with T-Mobile's 4G network. If the next Nexus is the same way, then I'm going with that on the T-Mobile prepaid plan. If not, I'm going to go with the Straight Talk AT&T plan. But T-Mobile's plan is nicely priced, and I hardly make calls anyways. Definitely not 100 minutes worth a month.

Straight Talk has SIM cards for either AT&T bands or T-Mobile. I started with AT&T and switched to a T-Mobile card here in Miami and the T-Mobile speeds are way better than AT&T. On AT&T I was constantly getting 500-600 kbps on the downstream and now I'm never less than 1500. Just make sure your device is compatible with the appropriate carrier's network or you'll be stuck on EDGE until the 30 days are up.

I used T-Mobile's $30 plan with my Galaxy Nexus. Worked great of course. From an AT&T MVNO, you can usually get unlimited minutes and texts, and 2GB's of data for around $55.
I was on Straight Talk(AT&T sim), but I really disliked the unknown data limit. Some days, I'm on wifi all day, while other days I download a 512MB's worth of files.

I'm gonna start with T-Mobiles $30 plan and see how data is and how well service is everywhere I go. If it's not good, ill keep that plan as a backup and try an AT&T sim on Straight Talk, just in case that if I don't like the service on AT&T's network compared to TMo, I could switch back to T-Mobile's prepaid and keep the $30/month with 5GB unlimited.

Best Nexus 4 carrier (US)

Hello, while being mindful of Nexus 4's LTE status, I would like to debate on what carrier is the best for general/specific purposes.
For data heavy but light on talk, it's renown that the T-Mobile $30 unlimited data/text plan with 100 minutes is the best value in that regards.
However, for someone like me who has two people on the line (my mom only uses talk, where I am more text/data heavy but still use some talk) I am curious about Straight Talk and Walmart's Family Mobile (both offered via Walmart)
My current plan is Walmart's Family Mobile at $45 / mo. + $35 line (ex. tax) which provides unlimited talk, text and 250 MB of data with options of $10 for an extra 1 GB, $20 for 3 GB or $40 for 8 GB. This is all 3g... but speeds are pretty horrible. It ranges from 0.26 to 0.8 Mbps.
Has anybody used Family Mobile and Straight Talk or another carrier that believe they have a better deal?
Thanks!

So let me get this straight...
I pay $45 + $35 / mo. and only get 250 Mb. So with Straight Talk... I get better coverage, 2 GB of unthrottled data (vs. 250 MB) for $10 more?
How much does it cost for additional data?
Thank you so much for the replies.

Correct. The world of MVNOs (companies using the main carriers' networks) is a brilliant one. The saving grace of American telecom (outside of the $30 T-Mobile plan you mentioned).

1. How much does additional data cost on Straight Talk?
Also, when selecting Straight Talk's "Please choose the type of phone you have"
"Phone is CDMA..."
"Unlocked GSM Phone"
"AT&T Compatible Phone"
"T-Mobile Compatible Phone"
2. Is it better to pick Unlocked, AT&T, T-Mobile or does it not matter as they both use the same frequency and will allow you to switch between one tower or the other depending on better service?
3. I'm guessing Straight Talk doesn't have any additional line services, so I'll have to buy two separate ones for me and my mom?
Sorry for all the questions, hopefully I'll be able to relay these answers to future people as I am forever in your debt.

When starting a Straight Talk plan, it actually DOES matter what you select here. If you choose AT&T compatible, then you will use the AT&T network. If you choose T-Mobile, then you use the T-Mobile Network. If I recall correctly, simply choosing "Unlocked GSM phone," will give you an AT&T compatible SIM.
There are benefits of each network. AT&T generally has better coverage, but instead of deploying DC-HSPA+ 42mbps, they opted for LTE. The Straight Talk MVNO does not currently have access to LTE (last time I checked).
T-Mobile, on the other hand, may not have as great of coverage but, if you happen to have good coverage, you could have access to their HSPA+ 42 speeds.
Their have also been reports of users getting throttled at different points depending on what network they chose with Straight Talk.
depends on the coverage in your area. Straight talk ATT in my area has great coverage but data speed is slow. tmobile runs fast like most advertised here but its spotty in a lot of places i travel to. since u can purchase a tmobile sim for $30 you wont lose much to test it out.
1. Pick at&t micro SIM.
2. See #1. No switching between at&t and T-Mobile since they mostly use different frequencies and prepaid MVNO don't data roam.
3. Yes.

Straight talk has a 100mb per day limit as well..... Go above it several times and they reserve the right to outright just kill service. Something to keep in mind.
I've been pleasantly surprised by tmo coverage in Indianapolis. I thought I was going to see a bunch of dead spots. I've only seen one. Out of the city may be different.
How do you go about getting the T-Mobile $30 a month plan without having to actually buy a phone from them/Walmart? I don't see this option anywhere

I get the same coverage but better call quality with Tmo.
I'm on the $30 tmo plan and it is pretty awesome. Coverage in the wild is slim to none, but in metro areas the speeds are excellent and I don't ever find myself wishing for LTE.
Getting the plan is a little tricky, as tmo won't sell it to you in the store. But you can activate it online (ironically enough.. inside their store too) or through walmart website.
If you can get coverage, T-Mobile is the best one in the US. I'm pulling 22Mbps here in Tampa, it's insane.

Net 10 vs straight talk in NC?

I've got just a few more months on my ATT contract. I searched and did not find a straight answer. Straight talk was my plan but it seems they are not selling the ATT sim cards anymore. I don't think the T-Mobile network is as good in the Charlotte area. What network does net 10 use? Is it as good as straight talk? Is anybody in the Charlotte area using the T-Mobile straight talk or net 10 on the nexus 4?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk 2
Net10 bounces between AT&T and T-Mobile towers, making it an ideal third party hybrid service provider, since it supports both GSM networks.
However, from what I have heard they have daily data caps which when you hit it they will throttle you. Plus it's third party pre-paid, which means service will be bottom of the barrel. I'd rather pay $65 a month on AT&T prepaid if you don't want to go T-Mobile, which has $70 unlimited 4g.

Net10 and straight talk are the same service/company, both tracfone parent. Straight talk is just a deal with Walmart giving a slight discount.
Recently net10 announced att byop would no longer be unlimited and capped at 1.5g data.
Straight talk no longer offers the att byop Sim on their site. You can still find and activate them. So far st has not followed with any changes, although we know att does indeed throttle data speeds randomly at their whim.. YMMV

I'd definitely go net 10, but they are killing us with the new data cap. BS. I don't know what to do now. I already pay 150$ month for ATT unlimited with a 6 GB shared plan, 2 phones. I bought the nexus 4 intending to get away from their contract, but I don't want to get data capped on net 10, or get worse coverage with T-Mobile version of ST. I don't know what to do.

Well feeling kinda bad for you. So first are you off contract? You could try pay as you go on tmo for a month and see how it works out for you.
Another option if you're set on using att is you can buy an st byop att Sim on ebay or save money and buy a net10 att Sim. And activate it on straight talk.com instead. They should be interchangeable, and only cost $1+/- shipped..
I had att st couldn't stand being throttled randomly by att. St had no control over it either.
I switched to Walmart/tmo $30 plan which was passable.
Enough so I just switch back to st but on tmo.
I agree with clock on trying tmobile out for a month and seeing if it meets your needs. You can get a micro sim activation kit for free on the tmobile website on their deals page atm. I live outside of Charlotte(Gastonia, dont judge lol) and their reception can be hit or miss but most places i go i get 1-4 bars which is good enough for me. Even at 1-2 bars i get around 10Mbps down and 1 up with a ping around 500-600ms. On another note they are going to an uncarrier strategy(no annual contract on postpaid starting late March), so basically all plans start with $50 for unl talk and text and 500mb data, anything over 500 they will charge $10 for every 2gb up to 12gb cutoff. I think there will be a $70 unl everything plan that includes mobile hotspot. I hope this helps some.

I'm actually in Lowell, (close enough to Gastonia) but work in Charlotte. I do have a little bit of time left on one of the two contracts with ATT. I was going to try to buy out the remainder of the time and break the contract if I was going to save $50 on two phones because I'd make it back in a few months and get unlimited data along with the unlimited talk/text I already enjoy.
I may go ahead and try the net 10. The website still says unlimited data, I heard (on these forums) they announced a data cap but still advertise unlimited on their website. I'm not sure what's up with that. 10 down and 1 up is plenty for me. Usually I'm only downloading new ROMs to flash anyway along with general web and forum browsing.
About that plan with $50 and only 500mb, that would cost me usually 60$-70/month and at that point I might as well stay with ATT and not be on borrowed bandwidth.

T-Mobile Plan

On T-Mobiles bring your own phone plan for $50 a month it doesn't say anything about how many minutes your plan has. I get 2GB of data and unlimited messaging but what about voice minutes? I am getting a new Nexus 4 and I live in the Bay Area Ca and I've heard that T-Mobile is the way to go with this phone. That the speed is almost like LTE where as At&t speed is crap if its not LTE...
I'm on their new no contract plans. I think $60 gets you unlimited voice and text. 2.5 GB at hspa+ and over that is edge.

Wait so the $50 plan does not have that?

The $30 no contract plan is where it's at! Unlimited texting and 5gb of full speed data but only 100 mins
Yeah I would burn threw those 100 minutes in one day.....

If you go to http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/prepaid-plans and press on where it says "Which plan is right for you", it compares all the prepaid plans. From what I've read the $50 plan gives you unlimited talk + text + data (first 500mb at 4g).
OK so the $50 is what I would need. Now the thing that I would need most is good download speed. On At&t when I had my old nexus 4 which was about 4-5 month ago, the download speed was not very good at all. On speed tests I would get something like 3-5 megs off hours and about 1-2 megs rush hour. HASP+ is what At&t has for the Nexus 4. What exactly does T-Mobile have over At&t signal to give it better speeds? And how exactly does bring your own phone work. I know they send me a sim and I put it in the N4. Now I want to keep my At&t number so do I just transfer my number over when I sign up or after I put the sim card in?
In my case, I wasn't able to get the SIM from a tmobile store, so I ordered it online. Also if you use promo code 99SIM you can get a micro sim for free on tmobile's website. Make sure you choose the prepaid micro SIM though. Then when you receive it just activate it online and choose the plan you want.
EDIT: when activating there's an option for porting your number, haven't tried it but I think it takes about a week to get your number transferred. For the download speeds on H+ I get ~14mbits down so it's pretty good. But for your plan ($50 plan) you'll have the first 500mb only at high speed, then it reduces to EDGE.
Aw cool thanks for that promo code I think I will give it s try. I will sign up with a new number just to see what its all about. OK I ordered it, was $1.09 nice So once I get it I go online and just pick the $50 or $60 plan and that's it? Will it assign me a new number etc...

You do know that the $50 t-mobile monthly 4g plan will throttle your data speeds after 500mb of high speed data, right? Pay 10 bucks for and you'll get 2gigs of high speed data.

Yes.
Yeah I just noticed that. I will probably go for the $60 plan. I'm trying to figure out on At&t with the same features how much their comparable plan is...
Also what about straight talk T-Mobile is that the same thing as a stand alone Sim card from T-Mobile? Would the speed be the same?

It should be the same. You'll need a straight talk sim instead.

I went to the Straight Talk website but I can't seem to find order a micro sim all they have are the regular Sims did they stop selling the micro SIMs
Just as an fyi - every question you asked can be found easily by searching. Also check out simple mobile for $50 unlimited. Check this link out http://www.allprepaidplans.com/ my friend. Got to remember that Google is your friend. Hope this info helps you too make an educated decision. Also some networks are just better in certain areas than others. See if you have a friend with at&t and tmobile and do a side by side speedtest

[Q] What are my Pay as you go sim card options for Nexus 4 unlocked?

Hi,
I saw that Google is offering an unlocked Nexus 4 for $199, so I went and ordered one.
I don't use cell phone minutes too much in a month as I often have access to Wifi in my area. I was wondering what pay as you go sim card options are compatible with this device (in the USA).
For example, I saw an ATT GoPhone plan that is $2 per day of use which I think may work for me, but I don't know if it is compatible with the Nexus 4 or if there are other similar or better options.
Thank you
Is that $2 every day or just the days you use it? That would still be $60/month.
As long as you can get a micro SIM card, any plan should work.
You could do tmobiles 30$ plan. 100 minutes, text unlimited and 5gb of 4g data then slowed down after that. Not a pay as you go but seems way cheaper and better than what you had in mind.

I just bought 2 N4's from GPlay as well and have been looking for the best option. I know that for my area the only two options are T-Mo and Straight Talk. Both have inexpensive monthly plans. It basically comes down to which carrier provides better service on your area. I chose T-Mo. If after I activate my phones, I'm not pleased, I'll try out the other monthly carrier next month.

you do realize that straight talk probably will use T-Mobile towers and more than likely will give you worse reception. Now if you have AT&T in your area then Straight Talk may use them. T-Mo can be 40-60 a month and Straight Talk is about 45 a month
there are threads in xda and the web with a breakdown of every MVNO and prepaid cell company out there.. Just Google it

I'm using Simple Mobile. It's part of the Tracfone family. Unlimited everything (even 4G - HSPA+ or LTE with patch). There are two options for unlimited everything $40 and $50. The $40 option supposedly throttles you after 500mb (haven't seen it yet and always over 500 x2 or 3), $50 no throttle.
All the Sim seller did was cut down a Sim for me.

Thank you for your replies, I will be going through them for more information
As for the $2/day then you only pay $2 on the days that you use it.
Also, I am not interested at all in using a plan that includes data, my wifi connections are good enough for that. I am more interested in making phone calls from time to time, especially in cases of emergency or when away from wifi. Maybe on average I use less than 100 minutes a month.
Then you might as well do pay as you go, and save even more by using Vonage to make free calls over Wi-Fi. I still recommend the T-Mobile $30 100min/5GB plan though.
Simple mobile also has a talk and text plan. As well, for others, they just up'ed the amount of 4g data on all their plans. So my $40 plan is now 1gb of 4g before they supposedly throttle me

If you don't plan to use very many minutes and you don't need to use any data then I'd recommend Lycamobile. It is a T-Mobile MVNO, so as long as you have good T-Mobile service in your area you'll be good. http://www.lycamobile.us/en/national-plans
