Leaving Unlimited LTE - Going Prepaid Nexus 4?

Who else is leaving Verizon and the comfort of Unlimited Data - LTE no less - and going prepaid?
I'm 99% certain I'm doing this. I'm more worried about coverage in the pre paid plans then about leaving Verizon. Good riddance! But still scary!
Who else is going through this and what plan are you going to try?

Depends on which prepaid you are going for. I left my unlimited data since I could save a hell lot more money with prepaid. (around 40 dollars a month)

I abandoned my Verizon Galaxy Nexus (and ate the ETF) for a Play Store Galaxy Nexus and a Straight Talk (AT&T) prepaid plan in May. I haven't looked back since. Got all the updates and cut my bill in half. Good things with prepaid is you dont have to commit. I say try out AT&T and T-Mo based prepaid plans in your area and see if you'll be happy with the service. When the Nexus 4 is released, all I need to do is put my SIM card in it...done.

I'm leaving sprint with their unlimited data

You should really make sure what type of coverage/data speeds you'll be getting on T-Mobile or AT&Ts networks before you make the jump. We all want the N4, but unfortunately, it's just not going to be viable for some people.

I have a Straight Talk ATT Sim coming as well as T-Mobile Prepaid. I will try both and see. I only have the coverage maps to go by and a few friends. I live in Spokane Washington so if anyone knows about that area let me know!

I did this same thing about three months ago. Between me and my wife we are saving about $100 per month for smart phone service. I wont argue that Verizon is the king as far as coverage goes but they are just too proud of their services and they are punishing long term loyal customers which I won't stand for.
I would say we are receiving about 90% of other service we had with Verizon for about half the cost. It was a no brainer for me. Even with the etf, I'm already saving money!

Not going pre paid but going to t-mobile unlimited.

Straight Talk looks good but I keep hearing about strict data policies. I use like 1 gig a month usually. Its the 100 MB a day that seems limiting. Occasionally, I need that.

Its more like 2gb a month. I don't put much stock in the 100mb a day thing because I've busted that bunches of times with no reprocussions. YMMV.
If data is a concern, get a T-Mobile sim if their coverage is good in your area. I read all the time about people using 5-7gb a month without being throttled.

I actually have a T Mobile sim coming as well. That 30 dollar plan looks awesome. I just don't know if I can do 100 minutes and how their coverage is.
I keep reading that pre paid plans do not have roaming either, does anyone know what that actually means? For example, what if I leave my state and I go to another city that has good coverage with the same prepaid carrier is that considered roaming?

I am doing this. I have a plan for me and the wife. My contract is up in January so ill be buying a Nexus 4 in late december to test it out/port my number before my contract ends effective 2/2. If all is good my wife will be making the transition as well. Right now we pay $150 for our plan through Verizon for 700/unlmtd/unlmtd. We only use like 100 minutes a month so im paying for the data/messaging... all of which I cant use data inside my home, so its Wifi only, and messaging at home hardly works anyways... wifey stays home with the baby and only uses like 100mb a month on the data package.......
All said and done I cannot believe I didnt make this switch earlier. Ill be saving over $900 this year alone incl the cost of the devices. Cant beat that..
That said - Anyone interested in a Galaxy Nexus in Mint condition (I mean mint.. its a Refurb that just got sent to me last week and rebuilt 2 weeks ago, not a knick or scratch) or a RAZR Black 16gb

Anyone in SE Michigan using T-Mobile $30 plan? Checking the coverage map looks very sketchy once you get off the e-ways.
AT&T used currently, so Straight Talk is an option, but use hardly any minutes so the T-Mobile plan looks enticing, but do travel a bit to the UP and Minnesota which looks like it would be hit or miss on coverage compared to AT&T/Straight Talk.

T-Mobile's HSPA+ is faster than Verizon LTE. I wish T-Mobile had the coverage Verizon did though.

H+ is such a sketchy network compared to LTE though. Very inconsistent and can be literally polar opposites in terms of data speeds in one spot to ten feet away. From my parking spot at work to the door I go from 8down to 1down with no obstructions. Same can be said in my house. With an LTE phone I don't see those kinds of fluctuations.

No that's not considered roaming. I used my gnex on straight talk at&t & postpaid t-mobile. Here is an example of roaming: when I go upstate, there is literally no tmo coverage. In those areas (about 3 hrs north of westchester county in ny), my postpaid tmo account will roam onto at&t. At that moment, I am a tmo customer roaming onto at&t. If I were on tmo prepaid, I would not get any service at all. I would not roam onto at&t. However, on my straight talk at&t sim, I had service up there. Data speeds are slower that tmo, but there at&t has a bigger footprint.

I did just this about two weeks ago. I went with tmobile $50 unlimited and cut my bill in half. I'm really sorry I didn't do it sooner to be honest. I paid my ETF, but that's ok because I'll make it up in like 3 months of having a lower bill. It was worth it to me, because verizon's anti-consumer nonsense was really starting to bother me, and their customer service has never been great in my experience.
Coverage with tmobile has actually been pretty good in Indianapolis. However, I'm currently on an Iphone 4 and can only get edge speeds as the network farm isnt done in my area. I really like the iphone a lot, considerably better than my incredible 2, though I will probably grab a nexus 4 when it comes out, if only for variety. It's nice being able to pop a sim card out of one phone and into another without the hassle of dealing with locked up, overpriced phones.
Do it, but you might want to think about keeping a spare phone around in case you have to have your nexus 4 repaired. an older android im sure would be fine, assuming it's a model with decent build quality that can stand the test of time.

Best Nexus 4 carrier (US)

Hello, while being mindful of Nexus 4's LTE status, I would like to debate on what carrier is the best for general/specific purposes.
For data heavy but light on talk, it's renown that the T-Mobile $30 unlimited data/text plan with 100 minutes is the best value in that regards.
However, for someone like me who has two people on the line (my mom only uses talk, where I am more text/data heavy but still use some talk) I am curious about Straight Talk and Walmart's Family Mobile (both offered via Walmart)
My current plan is Walmart's Family Mobile at $45 / mo. + $35 line (ex. tax) which provides unlimited talk, text and 250 MB of data with options of $10 for an extra 1 GB, $20 for 3 GB or $40 for 8 GB. This is all 3g... but speeds are pretty horrible. It ranges from 0.26 to 0.8 Mbps.
Has anybody used Family Mobile and Straight Talk or another carrier that believe they have a better deal?

Got plenty of coverage here with ST T-Mo. Able to pull 15 Mbps down on their DC-HSPA+ 42 network in South Florida. It is awesome.

So let me get this straight...

Correct. The world of MVNOs (companies using the main carriers' networks) is a brilliant one. The saving grace of American telecom (outside of the $30 T-Mobile plan you mentioned).

When starting a Straight Talk plan, it actually DOES matter what you select here. If you choose AT&T compatible, then you will use the AT&T network. If you choose T-Mobile, then you use the T-Mobile Network. If I recall correctly, simply choosing "Unlocked GSM phone," will give you an AT&T compatible SIM.
There are benefits of each network. AT&T generally has better coverage, but instead of deploying DC-HSPA+ 42mbps, they opted for LTE. The Straight Talk MVNO does not currently have access to LTE (last time I checked).
T-Mobile, on the other hand, may not have as great of coverage but, if you happen to have good coverage, you could have access to their HSPA+ 42 speeds.
Their have also been reports of users getting throttled at different points depending on what network they chose with Straight Talk.

depends on the coverage in your area. Straight talk ATT in my area has great coverage but data speed is slow. tmobile runs fast like most advertised here but its spotty in a lot of places i travel to. since u can purchase a tmobile sim for $30 you wont lose much to test it out.

2. See #1. No switching between at&t and T-Mobile since they mostly use different frequencies and prepaid MVNO don't data roam.

Straight talk has a 100mb per day limit as well..... Go above it several times and they reserve the right to outright just kill service. Something to keep in mind.

I've been pleasantly surprised by tmo coverage in Indianapolis. I thought I was going to see a bunch of dead spots. I've only seen one. Out of the city may be different.

How do you go about getting the T-Mobile $30 a month plan without having to actually buy a phone from them/Walmart? I don't see this option anywhere

Tmobile offers a microSIM activation kit on their website, and once you get it you can activate it online

ST Tmo is hard to beat IMO, in your situation though I'd go $45 ST plan + pageplus for your mom.

I get the same coverage but better call quality with Tmo.

I'm on the $30 tmo plan and it is pretty awesome. Coverage in the wild is slim to none, but in metro areas the speeds are excellent and I don't ever find myself wishing for LTE.
Getting the plan is a little tricky, as tmo won't sell it to you in the store. But you can activate it online (ironically enough.. inside their store too) or through walmart website.

If you can get coverage, T-Mobile is the best one in the US. I'm pulling 22Mbps here in Tampa, it's insane.

Yes, but you would have to get a new number
If you want to keep your number, you need to port over to google voice and then activate the account with the plan and port the number from GV into the account with the $30 plan

Needed a little help currently here in the good old U.S.A and on verizon wireless i am thinking about switching carriers one reason is my phone of choice is the Htc One, also thinking of switching because of the things that i can do on some of the other networks here in the states like talk and surf at the same time not only on 4g lte but also on 3g hspa+, which is another thing that i liked because if im in an area that 4g lte is not available i can fall back on hspa+ which is faster than verizon cdma 3g network that tops out at 1.5-2mb down and .4mb up.
The reason why i am holding on to verizon is that I have unlimited data no throttling or data overages and I am planning to buy my phones at full retail to keep me out of contracts with these companies and also keep my unlimited data because i use alot of data i mean 8gb a month avaerage over 4months i guess if i stay with verizon i would have to settle for the samsung plastic s4 or wait for the google x phone. just want to hear some opinions or advice thanks in advance.

Sprint is your only option for unlimited data. They don't have HSPA, but are substantially cheaper than Verizon.

I just switched from Verizon to ATT yesterday coming from Unlimited as well.
I switched mainly because of the lack of service in my area of work and lack of availability of phones. Does going from Unlimited to 5Ggb suck, yes, but I also have service where I work and will be able to get the beloved HTC One. I'll just need to keep an eye on my usage from now on.
I pay $10 for every GB I go over which doesn't sound too bad to me.

When my unlocked HTC One arrives I will trim the sim and use it.

I'm joining my fiance's AT&T plan here in NY, there data for two lines isn't horrible. $150 for Unlimited Talk/Text and 4GB shared data for $150 for a few business/pleasure phones isn't too bad, she's paying $100 a month for her non-smartphone though, ****ing crazy!

you order the HTC One on locked can you provide link plz, and i did not even think about staright talk that looks really promising same network as AT&T unlimited calls and text plus data unlimited? now im sure they throttle usage over a certain amount just not sure what that amount of data would be.

It does but HTC One 801e I have ordered does not have frequencies that are needed with T-Mobile.

Then I say Sprint. They are about 90% done with their Network Vision upgrade in Chicago.
You can visit Sensorly.com so that you can see how their LTE coverage is in your area.

[Q] What are my Pay as you go sim card options for Nexus 4 unlocked?

Hi,
I saw that Google is offering an unlocked Nexus 4 for $199, so I went and ordered one.
I don't use cell phone minutes too much in a month as I often have access to Wifi in my area. I was wondering what pay as you go sim card options are compatible with this device (in the USA).
For example, I saw an ATT GoPhone plan that is $2 per day of use which I think may work for me, but I don't know if it is compatible with the Nexus 4 or if there are other similar or better options.

As long as you can get a micro SIM card, any plan should work.

You could do tmobiles 30$ plan. 100 minutes, text unlimited and 5gb of 4g data then slowed down after that. Not a pay as you go but seems way cheaper and better than what you had in mind.

I just bought 2 N4's from GPlay as well and have been looking for the best option. I know that for my area the only two options are T-Mo and Straight Talk. Both have inexpensive monthly plans. It basically comes down to which carrier provides better service on your area. I chose T-Mo. If after I activate my phones, I'm not pleased, I'll try out the other monthly carrier next month.

you do realize that straight talk probably will use T-Mobile towers and more than likely will give you worse reception. Now if you have AT&T in your area then Straight Talk may use them. T-Mo can be 40-60 a month and Straight Talk is about 45 a month

I'm using Simple Mobile. It's part of the Tracfone family. Unlimited everything (even 4G - HSPA+ or LTE with patch). There are two options for unlimited everything $40 and $50. The $40 option supposedly throttles you after 500mb (haven't seen it yet and always over 500 x2 or 3), $50 no throttle.
All the Sim seller did was cut down a Sim for me.

As for the $2/day then you only pay $2 on the days that you use it.
Also, I am not interested at all in using a plan that includes data, my wifi connections are good enough for that. I am more interested in making phone calls from time to time, especially in cases of emergency or when away from wifi. Maybe on average I use less than 100 minutes a month.

Then you might as well do pay as you go, and save even more by using Vonage to make free calls over Wi-Fi. I still recommend the T-Mobile $30 100min/5GB plan though.

Simple mobile also has a talk and text plan. As well, for others, they just up'ed the amount of 4g data on all their plans. So my $40 plan is now 1gb of 4g before they supposedly throttle me

If you don't plan to use very many minutes and you don't need to use any data then I'd recommend Lycamobile. It is a T-Mobile MVNO, so as long as you have good T-Mobile service in your area you'll be good. http://www.lycamobile.us/en/national-plans

Go Smart mobile on Nexus 4

I am done with Straight Talk. When it works, it works. But when it doesn't, it Sucks. And everyone knows how BAD their customer service is. I'm planning to switch to Go Smart mobile. Anyone use their service? And is it decent? I do ALOT of calls and messaging. But I barely use any data. Maybe 1gb a month from streaming music and navigation. I'm looking at their $35 plan. Any advice would be appreciated.

it's owned by T-Mobile so just check their coverage map.
For the $35 plan you will still connect to 3G, but throttled to 2G-like speed @ 128kbps. I don't think you can stream and browse with that kind of speed. (You can do it, but it won't be fun).
The $45 plan is throttled down to 1Mbps.
I think the $30 plan is best if you only use WiFi. Other plans get throttled too much for my taste.

It just works, flawlessly, all the time... It might cost a little more than ST/Net10, but it is worth it, and if you have any issues just walk into a local AT&T corporate store and they take care of it or their tech support/customer service is actually pretty good from the little I have had to deal with them.

The GoPhone plans don't seem so hot... $60 for 2GB of data on a smartphone is pricey for a prepaid plan. AIO Wireless is owned by AT&T and gives you 2GB for $55, but it's 2GB of high speed and unlimited throttled data.
If T-Mobile has decent coverage in your area then GoSmart would be worth a shot based on your usage. Music streaming would be fine on their faster plan, and even their slower plan should handle low-bitrate streaming.
Since it's prepaid and no contract, why not try it out and cancel after a month if you're unhappy?

AIO Wireless is throttled all the time, read carefully users who have switched, they limit to about 3MB/s, and their MMS is... ummm... questionable, at times.
Go Phone might be a little more spendy, but for the extra $5 or $10, it is worth it to me.

As of September they increased the cap from 4Mbps to 8 Mbps. It's certainly not LTE speeds but that's faster than I ever got on AT&T's HSPA+.

I used their service for a month, received excellent speeds - for whatever reason just as fast as I would on T Mobile LTE and never had reception problems. The issue for me was the data - I thought it would he throttled when you hit your cap but it just store working altogether. Of you know you can limit yourself it's worth ire bit otherwise I would suggest T Mobile prepaid.

There's always Solavei which I recently signed up for and find it to be the best deal! If you sign up before October 4th then your first month will be $29 (plus tax) and after that you'll pay $49 (plus tax) a month. You get 4gb of 4g data and then throttled to 2g speeds once over the 4gb. You also get unlimited text, mms and calling. SOLAVEI USES T-MOBILES TOWERS FOR DATA/TEXT/CALLS & ROAMS FREELY ON AT&T FOR TEXT/CALLS (NO AT&T DATA)!

Thanks for all the helpful advice. I just don't want to hop prepaid carriers because I have to buy a sim card every time. And I only need data for gps use. Sometimes I stream but I'm always around wifi. 35 bucks for unlimited calls and texts seems like a steal. I don't mind 2g speeds.

Good luck... Just remember if that fail or doesn't work out for whatever reason, GoPhone SIMs are free at any AT&T corporate store.
