Hi all!
I'm thinking about getting a Transformer tablet. So I have some questions before:
1.) Can the battery be removed (I don't think so)?
2.) Heard something about running Ubuntu on the tab. Is dualboot (Android - Ubuntu) possible?
3.) How about updates? It is no stock-Android, right? So how do they call the Asus-UI? And how is Asus' update politic? Good/bad? And how is the support if you have problems with the tab (guarantee and so on)?
4.) Is the bootloader unlocked? How about custom-ROMs (I like flashing my Galaxy S, just btw )?
5.) What about apps? The tab has a much higher resolution than the most smartphones. Do you see most apps fullscreen or just a little bit (don't know how to describe it , but I hope you know what I mean )?
6.) Is the screen resistant against scratches (like Gorilla Glass on my SGS)?
7.) Is it possible to open Microsoft Excel- and Word-documents (couls do this on my Galaxy S withSamsung's pre-installed office software).
Thanks,
LB115

1.) Can the battery be removed (I don't think so)? no
2.) Heard something about running Ubuntu on the tab. Is dualboot (Android - Ubuntu) possible? not yet
3.) How about updates? It is no stock-Android, right? So how do they call the Asus-UI? And how is Asus' update politic? Good/bad? And how is the support if you have problems with the tab (guarantee and so on)? asus have been fast with updates so far via ota and web
4.) Is the bootloader unlocked? How about custom-ROMs (I like flashing my Galaxy S, just btw )? not sure, think so, you can flash alt kernels etc
5.) What about apps? The tab has a much higher resolution than the most smartphones. Do you see most apps fullscreen or just a little bit (don't know how to describe it , but I hope you know what I mean )? most apps scale well to fit the screen, some games just appear small in the centre of the screen, not many though.
6.) Is the screen resistant against scratches (like Gorilla Glass on my SGS)? yes gorilla glass, very tough
7.) Is it possible to open Microsoft Excel- and Word-documents (couls do this on my Galaxy S withSamsung's pre-installed office software). yes it comes with polaris office which will open those.
Wow, thank you very much for the quick answer!

It is running stock honeycomb with custom systemui icons nothing more.
Sent from my Transformer TF101
But it won't get Google updates like the Nexus S and Nexus One?

I'm not so sure many other people will reply here based on that, lol.
Since it's not "google branded", you won't get updates as fast IMHE, but updates have been quick. Just picked mine up today and love it, and I've come from many 2.x android devices and ipads. Honeycomb rocks 'em all!

Not sure. Probably possible for the dock, don't know about the tablet.

There are two ways to run Ubuntu on it. One is chroot, which lets you run both at the same time (sort of like a virtual machine). You connect to the instance of Ubuntu using VNC though, so don't expect miracles.
The other technique is booting it instead of Android. This is still being developed, but it's coming along very quickly and I hear that the first release should be ready today. Right now you can only dual boot by replacing the recovery partition (which is used to install firmware updates and normally occupied by Clockwork Mod on rooted systems), but I think they should come out with boot loader once Ubuntu is fully functional.

So far updates have been pretty good, though you can forget about firmware updates if you're going to root it.

Custom ROMs (e.g. PRIME ROM) and kernels are available. You can get root access, CIFS, TUN and overclocking support (I've heard it can go to 1.4 usually).

Smartphone apps resize really well, you wouldn't even know they were designed for a smartphone if you didn't know what to look for. They do tend to be a bit inefficient about using the screen though.
There are also some apps designed for tablet usage which work well.
6.) Is the screen resistant against scratches (like Gorilla Glass on my SGS)?

It's gorilla glass (same one used in iPads, IIRC). But it's a touch screen, so I'd suggest going with a screen protector to be on the safe side (plus I found the friction of just the glass to be too high). Not to mention the screen is very reflective, so a matte screen protector works wonders...
7.) Is it possible to open Microsoft Excel- and Word-documents (couls do this on my Galaxy S withSamsung's pre-installed office software).
Yes - comes preinstalled with Polaris Office, which supports Word, Excel and Powerpoint documents.

just ordered my note 10.1 yesterday. should be here next week!
i have an s3, and i just updated it to the latest version of AOKP.
of course i'll be rooting it but i was wondering if anyone thought the tradeoff to using a different rom was worth it. i got the note for work (mainly notes and powerpoints) so i'd hate to not be able to use any of the features that really set it apart from other android tablets!
My personal experience left me inclined to stay with a touchwiz based custom ROM, some extra power and flexibility without losing anything. CM and AOKP are nice as always, but on this particular tablet I really find features like multi window, smart stay and air view to be well worth their weight. There's a growing selection of roms that retain all of the Note's features. I really liked Android revolution a lot, am currently on Collective edition. You can even enable all apps to multi window, which is just savvy!

That's what I was thinking. It'd be a shame to go vanilla and lose all the features I paid extra for! I'll check out some touchwiz based ones then.
Yep, I Cant Understand Why People Pay Premium $$$ then Go Vanilla Android And Loose All those Features They Bought The Note For In The 1st Place.... Each To Their Own...
Just Be Aware Too, Because Of All The Tweaks And Things Running In The Background You Might Find Your Battery Draining A Lot Faster... At Least, That Was My Experience. Went Back To Stock Rooted And Battery Lasts Longer...

I'm thinking I'll do the same thing I did with my phone: wait minimum 2 weeks before I start messing around. That way I have a good base to judge things like battery life compared to stock.
Thanks for the advice everyone! My Note should arrive on Monday!

I bought this tablet for the Wacom technology and s-pen, combined with the excellent hardware. All of that is perfectly fine in AOSP. Palm rejection, s-pen support, etc.
I did not buy this tablet to have multi view, but I can see where that would be a non-negotiable.

I'm sure at some point I'll experiment with an AOSP rom. I always wind up back at those...

I tried "Android Revolution HD" and "Omega" ROM, both are very nice and are touchwiz modified roms.
You should check them out.
Android Revolution HD
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2119547
Omega
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2131474
One or both of them may use Aroma installer so may want to stick to Zedomax "HighOnAndroids CWM".
Zedomax also has a post "How to ROOT Galaxy Note 10.1" http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1831152
And here is one of his many .coms that he has that has an embeded step by step video on how to root you note 10.1, his root method includes CWM that does work with Android Revolution HD and Omega ROMs. http://rootgalaxynote.com/galaxy-note-10-1-root/how-to-root-galaxy-note-10-1-easiest-methodcwmmethod-2/
TIP: I download the video of Zedomax root process onto my computer along with the files needed to root so I have them all in one place.
.
Whoa! Thanks!!

+1 - It Must Be The Custom ROM He's Using; Perhaps The Keyboard Is Broken In It
Kidding aside though, normally I only deal with AOSP-capable devices, but you have to admit that the TW version (and features) we have on the Note 10.1 are pretty nice- so I'm using ROMs that are as close to Stock as possible (namely, Darkman's ROMs and lately AR HD 5.0).
Also, most complaints about "bloatware" are completely unfounded and appear to come from users who read not-quite-fully-understood posts on forums like these. I've never used Crayon Whatever-it's-called nor the Music Hub, and the effect of either is negligible. They don't take up much in the way of storage either (esp. on devices with at least 11GB of free space out of the box).
Actually it's the stock rom for Australia... Was using my note to post... Samsung seem to have a bug in JB they released for us poor buggers down here. Only real problem with the stock rom though...:silly::laugh:
Not gonna complain too much though, It took them long enough to release it...

99% of the time its being used it's to keep the All-Share Cast Dongle working, which (due to DRM reasons) won't run if the flash counter is greater than 0. It really doesn't affect anything else, AFAIK.
The stock messaging app seems to be laggy as all hell. Typing is sometimes painfully slow or just not responsive. Samsung told me to reset the cache but that didn't do anything.
Is there a message limit that hurts it? Is there something else that could potentially be causing this? Or is this just a problem with Touchwiz messaging app itself?

Honestly its terribly laggy. I had to resort purchasing an app. Enhanced Email and Touchdown work well if you need MS Exchange Support.
MS Exhcange Support isn't a big deal for me but thank you for the suggestion.
The gallery app has been giving me fits today too. I mean what's the point if making this super advanced phone if I have to reboot it more than I do my Windows machine.

I think he meant SMS while you are talking about Email.
This phone's screen is beautiful but the laggy performance is really bad. The SMS app is horrible.
I am terribly disappointed in this phone. The more I use it the more annoyed I get. I might just return it tomorrow and get another iPhone cause I can't stand the Lag anymore. Especially in a phone as speced out as this.

Concern Samsung and Android devices have a bad habit of not updating their devices and leaving their customers stranded. They pop out new model phones very frequently and once that happens they forget about older models and could care less about our problems.

I realize that which is part of the reason I got the S4, my S2 was no longer supported on here and battery was running dead all the damn time.
All this **** is enough to make me want to get an iPhone.
I to hated the laggy messaging. Even with 3rd party apps like SMS PRo and such it was still laggy and buggy.
Flashed CM10.1. AOSP stock Messaging app on CM10.1 is MUCH MUCH MUCH more responsive. I had the same frustrations coming from a iPhone 4S (Had 3G, 4, 4S prior for years).

I really don't understand. Samsung must realize that they are first and foremost manufacturing a phone. That's supposed to be used for calling and texting. They needed to pay 100 percent attention to these primary functions and make sure that they all worked properly. Instead of putting useless gestures and infrared they needed to insure the phone send and received texts properly. Major ball drop by samsung here. Very disappointed.

Agreed. This is why I have never used a Samsung device in the past and have stuck with iPhones since iPhone 3G before Android was even out there. Got tired of the small screen, wanted larger screen and higher resolution so jumped ****.
Really, try CM10.1. Its so much better without Samsung's bloatware. It's a whole different phone with it.
I also returned my Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0" because of its laggyness last year until I tried CM9/CM10/CM10.1 on it. Totally made me think diferently. Also got me into the world of CM and flashing stuff so I knew what I was doing for my S4.

My first android phone was an HTC Aria/Liberty and I put CM7 on it so I'm sort of familiar with the process and if it comes down to it and this lagginess continues I'll install CM10.1 on the S4. I didn't realize they had a stable build for the S4 yet though.

Hi there I'm an owner of a 10 months used galaxy nexus and i've been thinking of buying a new phone as i kinda got bored of stock android and want something different.
I first narrowed my choices down to 2 devices which are considered at one of the best, HTC One, Galaxy S4. I continued searching and asking people about their experiences, and no i'm not an average user i hate lags i don't want them as much as anybody. At first i thought i could live with 4.7 inch screen on htc one for the absent of lags but i just don't think that way anymore.
I even think that 5 inches is small so i actually thought about buying note 3 but since it's a little bit more expensive than s4 in the country i live at, I might have to go for S4.
But my main concern is lag and i read that a lot of people were actually complaining about them. My nexus is rooted so my S4(if i buy one) will be rooted as well and i was wondering if there was actually a way(s) to eliminate all and any lag from that device since that is kinda the main reason i'm switching from GNEX.
Thanks.

Remove all bloatware and preinstalled apps u don't use etc etc ... since u were rooted u should know the drill to lighten the load ...
If you buy the i9505 u can also install stock android rom just as the i9505g(google edition) has
But if you want touchwiz or any of the samsung features, to my experience and we are talking about stock ... the i9500 seem to have fewer lagging issues ...
I bought my S4 to replace a nexus 4. Had the same boredom feeling about vanilla android experience so I ended up using this i9505. It's a great device IF you manage somehow to deal with lag and stutters all over the place (speaking of Tw stock roms ofc). I really can't understand why a hardware beast like this has to lag more than my very old S2. So, in terms of lag (that was your Q) you'll be disappointed... in all other terms it's still one of the best.

I considered the HTC one and nexus 4 also, but the S4 screen just looks stunning (even though the HTC's is supposedly better in direct sunlight). The screen looks huge (although its become normal to me now) and even though its not that much bigger than the HTC's, it still looks a lot bigger when side by side.
Its certainly not a slow device and is actually very smooth but you can definitely do plenty to improve things. As mentioned above, I removed a lot of bloat apps that I dont use/won't miss. I also started using greenify to hibernate apps running in the background. Another simple thing is change the animation speeds to 0.5x, I also do this on my nexus 7 as it makes it feel snappier as well (not that its slow). There are also the options of a lot of custom ROMs, some that are simply stock look with touchwiz, but tweaked/optimised for speed/battery life.
There is also the option of AOSP/CM/Google Edition ROMs if you want something leaner. Plus there are a couple of methods of dual booting if you want the best of both worlds. The speed and simplicity of stock android is great, but its also great to enjoy all of the bells and whistle features that Samsung added (that you paid for!).
So are those roms you mentioned that are based on touchwiz lag-free?

There will definitely be a lot less lag than the standard stock ROM, although you'd really need to test yourself to see how they perform for you. There's usually plenty of comments in the ROM threads on how people find them, so they're worth a read.

I'm currently on rooted stock also and it's great, if its laggy then its certainly not laggy enough for me to want to keep switching ROMs or even change phone. As much as people say how great sense is on the HTC one, it looks so dull and unfinished to me. And I know it's a real improvement as I've had htcs and seen it go from a rich ui to a bloated clunky mess. But you hand someone your s4 and you usually see how impressed they are with the stunning colourful display.

What about kernels? Franco kernel for gnex helps a lot as ive used it. What about s4?
What do you think is better ? and what you prefer ?
S7 or N7 ?
The UI of N7 is really nice, in terms of performance there is not much of a difference, I would take the N7 if I wanted a S Pen otherwise the S7 Edge all day
N7 roms are for me better looking because the ux
I got the S7 Edge for 3 reasons:
1) Smaller phone
2) Slightly bigger battery
3) I never really used the Stylus when I had a Note 3

Same for me. When i had a note i barely used the stylus. If you want to try the Grace UI which is pretty good. you can flash a N7 rom. There is plenty and they are pretty stable.

restricted means, you are not be able to develop binaries and stuff , and you have to wait ages for jailbreak and their updates ! I developed a small app on iOS and if you wanna use it, you have to post it to apple store and you have to wait... meanwhile, if you have android device you can do it easily by switching on "Allow from Unknow Sources".. So, for me iPhone is so restricted..

Nice, I have the same S7 Edge, are you planning to put a custom ROM on it ? Currently I'm on custom ROM with n7 port for best UX

I'm using a N7 port ROM too (Renovate + Jesse's kernel. Awesome battery life and UI smoothness)

Cool, I finished development of new binary that allows interactively or on the fly to debloat safely your device. This binary will be published in few moments on XDA
