Ubuntu for Phones

Ubuntu for phones has just been announced today for mobile devices.

Ubuntu for phones keynote presentation (Skip to 6:30 for the Mobile OS)
What does that mean for us? Ubuntu for phones supports the full range of ARM processors and also fully supports Android device drivers. Which means Ubuntu for phones should be easy to install on a multitude of android devices including the DINC2.
What does this mean for Devs? You can code in native C and C++ and there is no Dalvik VM to limit what you can and can't do.
We'll be getting a glimpse soon, as the Ubuntu OS will be made available for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus in the coming weeks.

Sadly I seem to have been mistaken, the OS will only be available for phones that feature the A9 chipset and that doesn't look to include the DINC2....

Regardless it's good to something other than google os. As much as I love android, I wouldn't want google monopolizing the market furthermore. It's about time Ubuntu/Tizen and etc to shine.

I really want to have this! Looks promising and even though I'm an AOSP fan (and android uses a Linux kernel) the possibilities with an Ubuntu phone OS really attracts me!

Ubuntu Phone OS on N7000

Hey folks, I'm keen to start work porting the gnexus image for Ubuntu to the N7000 when it's released later this week. Is anyone else keen to join this effort?
While very familiar with the linux commandline, servers, desktop linux, and flashing my phone, I haven't compiled much code before and am unsure where to start. I would appreciate any advice you might have.
Looking forward to getting this os running on our original notes.

I'm presuming you're going to need to build an unbuntu compatible kernel for the note, mobile devices don't tend to work in the same way as desktops, so the pretty much universal kernel model used on the desktops don't work too well here. (size being the major consideration).
Not really looked into what they are doing, I'm presuming they will release source under gpl, so at least you will be able to diff a standard gnex build and the ubuntu. You can then use that as a basis to rebuild for the note.
"Porting" an image if that's all they release is going to end up quite messy.

You think every android phone runs on the same kernel? Think again.

It's always a possible that they will use an Android kernel for the gnexus or n4 builds, but it's unlikely, as Android has some features that don't play too nicely with a mainstream Linux build.
Not seen this yet, nor code for it, so can't say exactly what they are doing yet.

See what happens when it comes out then, but would seem from the information Canonical is presenting that they are using standard android kernels. Will be interesting to see.

Yes, but what he say is that Ubuntu runs from Android Kernel. The CyanogenMod 10.1 kernel. And as we have CM 10.1 on note, the kernel is not a problem

Yep, definitely looks doable now. Love cyanogenmod and ubuntu.

Well... There is actually just 1 thread but in (near?) future there will be more threads for mods, roms etcpp and so they would get lost between the android threads... But I think we have time till the first port appears...
But count me in for beta! Would be pretty awesome seeing Ubuntu 4 Phones on our beloved GNote!

Well, one step at a time. First get it to work, then dual boot is the next step.
Finally, it might be possible to run them "together", for example running CM apps in Ubuntu Touch.
I mean by transforming the base Android system into a fully-fledged CM and connect it up to Ubuntu.
Not sure that is feasible yet, but there might be a chance. And it is sure a while down the road.

Really disappointed that it's only a "skin" on top of CM10.1, proper ubuntu is what we need, to actually run linux apps but still, every advancement is positive but I'm not interested in another android port, I like jelly bean as it is, AOSP ftw.

It's not running on top of CM10.1 is running on top of the CM10.1 kernel (and some drivers for the hardware) and I wouldn't say it's fair to call that a "skin". That's like calling every linux distro a linux skin.

true, my frasing is wrong but it doesn't change the fact that it's not capable of running linux apps, it's just another take on android, and on a tablet such as this I'd love to be able to dual-boot into android/linux, let's see where archlinux will take us but with the way things are changing and people upgrading to newer devices this will be left behind as well eventually, and to think that since the first quad core device a year ago today we call the tegra 3 a low-powered chipset compared to the powerhouses coming out, and people still don't have a quad core cpu at their home pcs and laptops, anyway, offtopic, let's see...

as far as I heard from many different people now it is just something to show the skin as main features like wallpaper, rotation and others aren't working yet although they should... Basically I would prefer a dualboot solution with stock ubuntu and android, but just my personal opinion...

I know that you are waiting for ports on your favourite devices, however there is none yet, simply because the SDK release comes with an X86 image, while most phones runs on ARM. But some developers started to port the image of the simulator into some X86 based tablets (that are actually computers).

Right now it is impossible to do a port on most phones and tablets (ARM devices). Don't even ask about a port for the N9. When the ARM image will be released, it will technically be possible to do a port to your favourite phone, assuming that
You have a way to boot on SD card / write on the rootfs of the phone
You have HW adaptation bits (Graphical drivers for Linux are very important)
HW adaptation is hard to find because most of them are for Android and not for pure Linux, so I don't know (yet) how it will be managed.

Sailfish OS based on Mer Project which available for long time.
in Sailfish os emulator there is 133 rpm package that come from Jolla, remaining 400 is from Mer
Jolla provide home screen, dialer app, all UI.
There is another shell Nemo Mobile, it`s not so cool but it open and you can already install it on phone
Porting already can be started, all you need is to port Mer core on device and then when Jolla release their phone it will just a metter of installing rpm packages.
There is videos of Nemo Mobile running on Galaxy Nexus, Snowball, RasberryPi, N950, an N9

Is there a live image that can be found for Sailfish on x86? I have an extra tablet (Samsung Slate, Sandy Bridge) that I have been using to try the emerging touch-based OSes and provide feedback.

Sailfish is very close to nemo actually, but you cannot get a live image right now. You can boot an image on an usb drive easily, however.

As long as it's possible to use a product key (ie pay for it), I doubt Microsoft would care. You must have some great bootloader hacking skills. Can you show us a video?

Photos/videos or it never happened. Regarding legality - so long as you redistribute neither binaries nor source code (which you would have to have in order to port x86/amd64 exclusive code to ARM unless you employ some kind of LLVM black voodoo magic) you should be fine. So yeah, photos/videos, preferably videos, or it never happened. Oh, and please tame down your signature a bit, it takes half the screen on my tablet, no exaggeration.

- I'm new to the Android Development side of things as all I've ever done was install Mods/ROMS/Recoveries and change a few settings here and there.
- I am in the process of trying to pick up all the skills needed to start this undertaking so it will be a while before you see any sort of real progress.
- If you can list things you think I ought to know please either send me a PM or post.
- I'm currently just setting up Virtual Box Configurations for Development.

I have a NTT Docomo Samsung Galaxy S3 Alpha. Its has a Exynos 4412 1.6 GHz quad processor (same as Note II) with 2GB RAM. Its LTE. Is Ubuntu Touch available for this?

I don't suppose that the lot working on Ubuntu could cut out the rubbish that is comparing ARM quad core CPU's with x86 quad core CPU's?
other than that, it's nice to see another somewhat-edge oriented touch interface and will be interesting to try it on my i9305 once releases start coming, probably not gonna be a keeper though.

So followed the instruction for the GT-I9300 device - but while the installation process it aborted with a message like some symlinks not working properly..
I'm ****ed up of android with google.. so I will install a native android on that device - but I'm the first who installs Ubuntu Touch ASAP!!

Unfortunately no, I've had a lot of setbacks lately and getting things sorted. My phone sort of dying and not letting me install most custom Roms has set me back a bit and I'm in the middle of some courses.
So until some of that's been taken care of or someone decides to have a go themselves I'm stalled but happy to update the thread if someone does come along.

Shame just purchased this phone sad this project is stalled would love to se e this

My son tried it in his mako (officially supported). Very preliminary version. No market, apps must be installed by terminal Linux commands, even keyboard and language require terminal commands.
No apn. No sim code asked, so no network.
In fact unusable. So I can't imagine how it can be here.
