Nexus 7 hard bricked?! - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey
i got my new nexus 7 and wanted to flash a new rom, so i just downloaded this and the flashing tool from this thread.
i didnt root/unlock bootloader or anything else, i just used the tool and did all the steps.
Boot into fastboot,
Wipe my Data,
Install Recovery + Kernel Ability
there were some more steps, but after this my nexus didnt do anything (maybe because of the missing root or the not unlocked bootloader or whatever?!)
it just was stuck in the mode with the android laying on the floor and giving error codes.
so i thought i softbricked it and googled some tutorials to restore a stock rom.
i foundthis and it seemed to work, but it was a bit outdated
i didnt get a .zip from the developers.google.com page, just a .tar, so i couldnt do
Code:
fastboot -w update image-nakasi-jro03d.zip
i just shut down the device then and thought it could maybe already work, because i updated/replaced the bootloader or something like this with
Code:
fastboot flash bootloader bootloader-grouper-3.34.img
but after rebooting it just shows me a completly black screen with a white "Google" in the middle and an open lock on the bottom.
it isnt responding to anything im doing, like pressing on/volume-buttons or connecting usb
the computer cant dedect it via adb with
Code:
fastboot devices
....
what can i do now? do i have to wait, until the battery is dead? this can take days...
i know i did something really stupid
is there any way to restore my nexus 7?
please excuse my bad english and please help me
thank you very much

Hold Power and both volume buttons until it goes off, then power it on while holding both volume buttons. When you see the android, Open Fast boot or a Nexus 7 tool and flash a stock image. You can get them from the Google Dev site. Hope this helps.

thanks for your help.
when i press power and both volume buttons the screen goes black after a few seconds, but it immediately reboots

Keep holding to volume buttons the entire time. It should go into the boot loader.

ok, thank you, it did. im too impatient
i connected it and it was dedected, thank your very much
i went to developers[dot]google[dot]com/android/nexus/images, is this the right google dev site?
i already downloaded this file and i only got a .tar when extracting it, but it seems like i need a .img

You could try and use the nexus toolkit. I haven't tried it, but it should be able to download and flash a stock img to your device from the bootloader.
Good Luck

Cannot get to CWM

Greetings,
I have successfully unlocked and rooted my Nexus 7. Now I'm attempting to flash CWM to the device, and it seems to have successfully gone, however I can't seem to boot to it. I've used the Google Nexus 7 Toolkit V2 which says it successfully flashed it, but still am unable to boot into cwm.
After shutting down the device I hold the up + down + power buttons down and all it does is boots into fastboot mode. If I let go of the buttons when I see the google image then the device just boots normally. Can anyone clarify what I'm doing wrong here? Cheers.
From fastboot, if you hook up your nexus to the computer, with the cable included then select 'recovery' by toggling thru the choices with volume and using the power button to select, it should boot into cwm. It only boots when connected to a computer, it's a known bug Next time do a forum search, dont start a new thread.

[Q] Nexus 7 Stuck on cm10 Start Up Help!

Okay so i was watching a video on youtube on how to get cm10 on my nexus 7, i bought the nexus 7 off a friend who rooted it for me and he had clockword recovery or whatever you call it set up on it. So the video said to download rom manager and then i went to download and downloaded the stable cm10 with gapps. Then it rebooted and what not and now its been stuck in the cyanogenmod spinning circle start up for about 2-3 hours now. So i held the volume and power button to get to the fastboot thing and shut the nexus off and then i restarted it and then.. the google sign came with the unlock icon and then the cyanogenmod circle came again -.- Please help if you can, sorry if any of this doesnt make any sense im new to all this. Thankyou in advance.
Power off fully, then hold the Vol+Pwr buttons down until it goes to the fastboot menu. Vol down to select recovery. I would do a factory reset and reflash the ROM + gapps.

Yea i did that right, it goes into the fastboot menu and i go to recovery mode. And when i click the power button, all that happens is that the black screen with google and the unlocked logo show up, and it stayed like that for like 2 hours again -.-
Do you know why that happens?
If you reflashed the rom I'm guessing a bad download.
ETA: Did you make a nandroid before installing? If so restore that.
Oh okay. So u suggested to do a hard reset. How exactly can i do that? My nexus wont load past the load up screen, on some occasions it goes past the google and unlock logo but then a cyanoggenmod spinning circle thing comes and then that just stays there.
Go to the bootloader (vol dwn+pwr), and plug into computer. Then select recovery mode.
Do a factory reset from there. Then reinstall CM10.

Oh okay, actually im really glad u just said this because i just tried this way. I powered off my tablet, then turned it on with vol dwn and power to get into the bootloader. Then i plugged my tablet into my laptop and now the volume keys wont let me scroll down to recovery mode. Pretty much the volume button becomes useless to scroll. Any help?
If the Vol buttons aren't working I'm out of ideas besides: try again? Otherwise you're going to have to wait for someone smarter than me. Sorry.
ETA: Found this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1907796 Maybe it'll help you.
wait do i have to have the latest drivers for nexus 7 installed on my pc b4 i plug it in? If you do know, let me know where i can find them. If you dont no worries ill wait for someone else, thanks for your help so far.
Hey don't know if you got your Nexus working again but I saw this thread about the buttons not working. Not sure what version bootloader you have.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1840675
Make sure you wipe the Cache and Dalvik Cache!!
When I first flashed CM, I got the infinite boot animation as well. I rebooted into recovery, did a wipe of my caches, and it was fine from that point on.
Also, when going from one rom from another, you gotta do a factory reset if you didn't already.
Yea I forgot to clear all the data.. nvr again but I can't get into recovery thats the problem. I have the 3.34 bootloader and it doesn't go to recovery and I tried plugging into my pc and then the volume rockers become useless. Any help plz?

I had the same problem this morning. After about an hour of messing with stuff I used mskip's toolkit to uninstall then reinstall the drivers. I
then rebooted into the bootloader without a cable and then connected the cable and the buttons were still responding. After that I updated
the bootloader to the latest release and I was about to boot into recovery.

[Q] Possible Brick?

Hey all, requesting some assistance...
I had used the nexus 7 toolkit to unlock the bootloader and root my tablet.
Earlier this afternoon, I decided to cave and flash cm10 on my tablet. Before doing so, instructions stated to wipe. In my ignorance, I wiped one too many things and also wiped the internal memory.
As a result, I am unable to get my tablet to fastboot and when I searched for the .zip to flash, I was presented with an ominously empty file directory to my sdcard's root. I have tried various things with the nexus 7 toolkit and have been unsuccessful in my endeavors, as many of those functions require the tablet to be in fastboot mode before any of them will work.
The device is stuck on the Google screen, and if I push the volume buttons with the power button, it will flicker and eventually return to this screen.
I do have a nandroid backup stored on my machine, but I am unable to use it as I am unable to even boot to the recovery (because I can't get to fastboot)... Any suggestions? I really hope I didn't brick this...
I believe you can get to fastboot mode with the v4.13 bootloader from any other mode so long as the battery is not dead and the screen is working.
When the battery has a good charge, hold the power button down until the google logo appears (could be up to 15-18 seconds). At that very moment that the black-and-white google logo image appears, press the Vol-down button.
Voila. Fastboot.
You do need to see that screen appear though; maybe that's the rub. Note that the timing is important - you only get one second or two to do this immediately after the image first appears.
As a bonus, glance at the bottom of that image. Shows an unlocked padlock for an unlocked bootloader, nothing if locked.
It worked! Thanks a bunch!

No worries. Glad it worked. Actually, I only stumbled across a reference to that button sequence a couple days ago.
If you see someone else reporting that they "can't get to fastboot", let them know - you can get there from ANY MODE.

Can't get into fastboot/bootloader, bricked?

I was using the Nexus 7 Toolkit, and used the option to boot into a recovery without flashing, on CWM 6.0.3.6. The device already had TWRP installed, but would not boot into it.
Now, I am stuck at the CWM screen with a "Warning: No file_contexts", and no commands available to me.
If I try to use the power/vol up/vol down combo to boot into fastboot, the device reboots, shows the Google splash screen for a second, and goes right back into the "busted" CWM. This happens regardless of the button combos, even if I just hold power for a while to try to boot normally.
Even though I'm partially in CWM, it's not recognized over usb via ADB, and I obviously can't get into fastboot to get it recognized that way. It was recognized correctly before.
If it matters, I had PA and TWRP installed before this happened.
Help!
Update: I let the battery drain itself dry overnight. After a re-charge and power on, still boots into the non-functional CWM. No fastboot/bootloader, even with the right key combo.
It's like I need to find some way to clear out of this temporary recovery that the toolkit created.
Similar problem
Does anyone have any insight on this one. I have a similar problem. A tablet was brought to me from a friend that is doing this. His son was "rooting" it when it developed this symptom. Looks like he was using CF-Auto-Root. When powering on you get the google screen then this auto root android screen and it loops. See screenshot.
I have been unable to boot the device any other way. Have tried fastboot and recovery many times with no success. When trying for fastboot with holding power, Volume up, and Volume down you get the Google screen once then black screen then Google again and it kicks back into the loop. Same as above poster every combination of button press/hold with or without USB has no effect other than the double Google screen as stated.
Device is not recognized on USB at any stage in this loop during my many attempts at fastboot or recovery.
Same as above if I could get it to do anything other than the loop like fastboot or recovery I think I can work it out what he has done.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Bump, anyone have thoughts on this? If I could just get into fastboot I'd be good, but the normal key combos do nothing, and I can't issue a reboot fastboot command since the PC won't recognize the device.
And yes, I'm sure I have my drivers set up correctly.
Anybody? What causes a device to not be able to boot to fastboot or recovery. If I can't fix it I would like to know why.
Looks like we might be hosed here. Don't see to many post on here that don't get some suggestions.
Yeah, even after letting the battery drain completely, I can only get into the hosed recovery mode, with no functions available. Fastboot key combos do nothing. I'm still stuck.
Can't anyone shed some light on this? Am I hardbricked? Would a picture of the recovery that I get into help?
Here is the only screen I can get into, regardless of key combos held during start up. This first happened after booting into temp recovery.
Help! About to have to throw my Nexus 7 in the trash!
does nexus use hibernation in place of shutdown, because sometimes i suspect my nexus does not shutdown? have u searched from this angle

I wouldn't think so; I have let the battery drain to dry by leaving it on that recovery screen until dead, and it just boots right back into it regardless.

Yes. It doesn't get recognized/doesn't connect via adb, so no commands work. And I'm positive it's not a driver issue.

I was on 4.3 PA and tried jumping up to CM11, this appears to have happened to me. Interesting...
Are you unable to get into fastboot by holding down volume up volume down and power? I did this, then used the root toolkit and was able to flash stock 4.4. Back up and running now.
No, vol up + vol down + power does nothing for me except get into this recovery.
Bumping this one more time. Anyone have any ideas?

[Q] Nexus 7 stuck

Hi,
my Nexus 7 (2013) is stuck on Google screen...
a few days ago I downloaded a lot of movies via utorrent, and utorrent kept crashing. So i forced stop, removed the app, reinstalled it from google play and continued.
My nexys then suddenly freezed for about 1-2mins before i shut it down via the power buttom, and since then it wont start...I've tried almost everything.
The device is stuck on Google screen. I've tried to boot it through the bootloader, recovery mode etc, but it's still stuck on the google screen. downloaded the nexus root toolkit to unlock my device, but it keeps tellin me i've to enable USB debugging. which I can't since my device won't start.
I've downloaded the SkipSoft Android tookit, but not too familiar with the tookit so haven't really tried anything yet (also not sure which android version i'm running)..
Is there ANYTHING i can do?
EDIT: tried using skipsoft android tookit to unlock bootloader, but when coming to the stage where i've to chose yes or no, the device get stuck and the power button does not respond => I can't chose Yes..
EDIT: So I've tried a few things but nothing seems to work..
downloaded a new adb+fastboot directory from another thread. Fastboot commands seems to work, but when i try and erase boot/cache etc the cmd does nothing...had this line for about 10min:
erasing 'boot'..
nothing happens.. when i unplug my device an error message shows (too many links).
so, fastboot won't erase my boot nor my cache, so i tried to fastboot flash bootloader bootloader.img, and it says my bootloader is locked.
fastboot oem lock --> bootloader is alrdy locked
fastboot oem unlock --> stuck at "YES", just as i was when trying with different toolkits.
fastboot -w update image-razor --> Error, failed to load 'img-razor'
soo i'm getting kinda desperate here...
remeber, this was all from a stock rom, no root, no custom rom, just from a freeze when dl movies from utorrent...
i have been stuck like that before. get into to the bootloader screen from where its hung at the google splash screen. once there you can fastboot a factory image.
from the google screen:
1. hold volume up, volume down and power until you get to the screen with the android and its belly open
2. connect to pc
3. download factory image from HERE
4. unzip the tar file you just downloaded and place the contents in your platform-tools folder
5. double click the file named flash-all.bat
6. wait for it to finish and it should boot up just fine.

when i press vol up, vold down, and power, holding them all in together from the google screen the device shuts down..

EDIT:
Also, I've never rooted or done anythign with this tablet except downloading a few apps etc...this crash happened when downloading from utorrent...

Yeah, and from what i can read it also needs an unlocked bootloader, which i don't have..
just keep holding the keys down. it will shut down. keep holding it will try to boot back up and take you to the bootloader screen. you do not need an unlocked boot loader. all my nexus devices have locked bootloaders, are rooted and run custom roms.

also, should add that i tried to unlock oem via the cmd, tried to flash boot.img but nothing..

Yes, I can access bootloader (fastboot mode).
tho i don't know which version i'm running..
it's either 4.4.2 (KOT49H) or 4.4 (KRT16S).
however, when running flash-all it says "fastboot is not recognized as an internal or external command"

dont worry about version. it does not matter. lets focus on your connection to the device. do you have ADB setup on your pc? if you dont, go to THIS thread and get minimal ADB & fatboot from shimp208. install it and run it.
