so i want to upgrade my windows 7 but - Windows 8 General

before i buy the key and install windows 8, i want to know if the drivers that came with the PC will get transferred to windows 8 or am i going to have to re install them again? i had driver issues with a clean install with the dev, release preview and rtm. they didnt install and i had to stick with the default windows ones which nerfs my PC to the max. i have a Dell Inspiron One 2305 with the AMD drivers and stuff. so i want to know if all the drivers will be transfered over before i buy windows 8 and upgrade it.

The rtm build is exactly the same as the final version that you'll be buying so it's possible that you'll have problems, but if the Dell came with Windows 7 you shouldn't have trouble with Drivers apart for certain Printers, which I've found out today.
As when I came to install my Canon Pixima MP140 Windows insists that the Windows 8 driver downloaded from Canon isn't compatible with Windows 8.
Roland

How long ago did you do the rtm install? Though you may need new drivers its worth a note that amd normally update there drivers monthly. When RTM came out for instance it was a real pain to get catalyst to install and you had to install the driver with device manager then install catalyst after etc but now they have full windows 8 support.
I don't have the link to hand but ms do have a tool that you can use that will check your system for compatibility.
And they did quite a large update about 2 weeks ago that addressed driver compatibility issues I cant say if this will address your specific issues but I know its made a huge diff to some.

I installed it when it came out and I still have a partition with windows 8 for testing purposes. I can't find the drivers for it for some reason though, only the windows 7 64 bit drivers are shown in the list and not win8 that's what is keeping me from upgrading

before u start u have this upgrade assistant. he will tell u about drivers. what will go what wont and what u will need to re install.

it said i have to reinstall them but the thing is that i looked for the windows 8 drivers and i found nothing for my device, it just gives me drivers for newer cards and old win 7 ones

when you upgrade to windows 8 it will ask you if you want to keep everything including drivers, apps, ext.

[DISCUSSION] Installing windows 8 pro

Hey guys, i looked around and couldnt find a thread so here's one.
I want to know, how did you all install windows8 pro? Did you do a clean install or installed without wiping anything?
I read on the internet that you can't install windows with a full wipe. After you do that, Microsoft blocks the activation of product key even if it's legit. MS says that windows 8 pro is only meant as an upgrade. What the f*** does this mean? Why is Microsoft having any objections on how we use something that we have bought legally?
Here's one article.
Let me know your thought on this. Did you face such an error while installing Windows?
I installed windows 8 without wiping. When im in windows 8 i backup everything i want then proceed to reset it to factory settings which it'll clean the c drive. Never had any problems with the activation. Oh i bought the online pro version which cost $39.99.
However the only problem i have is everytime it reboots my mouse will not work forcing me to restart again to get my mouse working. Otherwise its good.
// Edit:
Forgotten to mention it was an upgrade from windows 7.
I also did make the downloaded W8 installation into iso and make it into usb installation via windows 7 usb tool and install from the usb on top of windows 8 for a clean installation and everything works well too.
If problem still persist you may try to install windows 7 and upgrade from there then while you're in windows 8 do a factory reset which doesn't require you to insert the cd or usb for the reset (+1 for that feature though). That's just me~

I got windows 8 Pro from dreamspark and it came as an iso. I burned it to a dvd and formatted my hard drive before installing.

Wtfhx, what does an upgrade even mean? Are we supposed to install win8 from the desktop of windows7? Or boot the PC from a CD and install from there? If it is the later, then how will it even know what is my operating system?

I installed windows 8 from windows 7 desktop as the installation was downloaded into my c drive. However i also tried installing from an usb from a direct boot into the usb (im sure it'll work the same as CD). Upgrading can only means you must have an existing OS such as windows 7 and install windows 8 from the CD inside windows 7.
Regarding to your problem about the activation caused by not an upgrade, i would suggest you to install windows 7 without activating it and run the windows 8 installation from the CD inside windows 7. I have not encountered your problem before but to troubleshoot it you may have to go extra length with what i have suggested. (Doesn't mean it'll 100% work)
Other ways to troubleshoot if the above fail is to try the usb installation with Windows 7 USB Tool. Before you use it you must turn your windows 8 installation cd into ISO with freewares like ImgBurn.
Not sure if any of these will help you but if both the solutions above fail, you may need to contact Microsoft or the dealer you purchased your copy of windows 8 about it.
// Edit
Wait are you having problem with the installation or you're just asking is there any problem with the installation?

You may do either. The installation handles everything. At some people, it may request your Windows 7 key and other times it detects the installation automatically.
I am not having any problem. I read that if you install windows8 using a clean install Microsoft won't let you activate the product key.
Just a question, did you click install Windows just like you'd any other game?

In that case, there is no problem whatsoever with my copy of installation downloaded from the Microsoft. Both installing from windows 7 desktop (Upgrading and yes it's like installing games) and usb booting installation (Considering it did not load my current OS first so this doesn't count as upgrading, i might be wrong), complete without the activation problem. Not sure about the physical copy but my guess is the result will still be the same. Others might have bought a bad copy of the installation disc, i don't know.
The best thing is, once you have windows 8 installed without any problem.. you do not need the installation files anymore. Reinstalling windows 8 can be done easily.

I did almost the same thing. I downloaded it from Microsoft and chose keep nothing , it loaded and I started with a clean laptop. I did not burn an iso or download it to an USB drive, I used the download.
Before I loaded win8 I used double driver and copied all my drivers to a backup, just in case I had an issue, I also did a full backup of everything else. I'm really enjoying it, but there are still a few places I use secure wifi that don't recognize windows 8 as being a valid os, they also dont recognize the windows defender as being a valid antivirus software, but otherwise I've been impressed. I was going to purchase a new laptop with a touch screen but I don't have any reason to now.

i did an upgrade without getting anything over from win 7...
Just to preface, Windows had marked my system as not being genuine (I know this because Microsoft security essentials wouldn't allow me to install it). I updated on top of Windows 7 since didn't want to install all of my apps all over again. I download the update and installed it right from my hard drive as opposed to a usb or dvd, although I did make a backup copy of the windows 8 file just in case.
Everything is okay except it takes a while (roughly 15 minutes) for windows to recognize my Intel graphics chip right away. The screen will just be black after the Windows logo appears. Also, if you update directly from your hard drive, make sure you delete your temporary files because windows will keep the old OS and files. After clearing mine I freed up 32 GB!
*Update*
After installing windows 8 and enabling then installing the windows updates, my laptop boots up just fine now ( and mighty quick I add). As others have said, I don't believe windows cares if your version of windows 7 is genuine or not.

Hi,
Thought I would share my experience:
I downloaded and installed the upgrade version. I was running Windows 7 Pro before.
After downloading the files, I wrote it to a disk and decided to do what I did for Win7, manual format and repartition my disks (I didnt trust the "Keep Nothing" option )
Unfortunately, I forgot I had a dynamic disk and my Win7 partition was booting off it - I formatted my C:\ and was met with a "Cannot create partition... / cannot install windows on dynamic disk"... it was a long painful process that took me most of the day to fix. Also, there is a bug with installing Win8 with multiple hard drives booting from disk or at least I had some trouble with it until I detached 2 of them for the install to progress.
After all that, the key wouldn't activate because it wasn't technically an upgrade... *face palm*
So, in went the Win7 disk, reinstalled and activated. After initial boot, I put in the Win8 CD and used the wizard and selected "Keep Nothing" ( At this point I couldn't care less)
All activated and now enjoying the system
Moral of the story:
- Stay away from dynamic disks on the boot partition, it'll warn you if you try - heed the warning!
- Multiple harddrives may cause issues with the install so you might need to disable them through bios or disconnect them from the mobo
- For me the Key only activated via an install, it wouldn't recognize it when I formatted C:\ through custom install.
- Did I mention? STAY AWAY FROM DYNAMIC DISKS!!!

Mine activated first try no problem
It's only the box copies that are sold in retail stores that are upgrade-only packages. A few will only sell full retail versions of Windows 8. These versions are more likely a hundred bucks more than the upgrade version. The copy downloaded from the Microsoft Store are full Windows 8 Pro copies.
What? Are you sure??

I upgraded my notebook from within 7 no problem. My desktop i bought the upgrade, and installed from a USB that the upgrade advisor program created. However i formatted the HD before installing and did a clean install and it never asked for any proof that i had windows 7 on my PC previously. Its fully activated and fine.
I have heard that in some countries it will even let you upgrade a pirate copy of 7 if the upgrade advisor program doesn't flag it.

Windows 8 Installation keeps failing?

Hi all, I bought windows 8 online today (download) and I tried installing it. Everything seems to work alright but then when it finally finished installing, I got the Windows 8 style bluescreen, a reboot, then it rolled back to Windows 7 telling me it couldn't install.
I'm trying to Install with keeping all my files/data but it happened a second time. Any advice? What am I doing wrong?

If your computer is an off the shelf model built by one of the major manufacturers I would get the drivers from them. They may even have the steps that you would need to do to get your machine ready for Windows 8.
If you or someone else built the computer from scratch go to the manufacturer of the motherboard and get the drivers from them for your specific motherboard. Hopefully they have developed the drivers for Windows 8 by now.

I partitioned my hard drive to clean install and I have no problems. Also if you have data you don't want to lose shouldn't you get like an external or online backup?
HP website: "If you purchased your computer prior to October 1st , 2011, HP has not tested or developed drivers for your model computer. Therefore an upgrade of your computer may be difficult or impossible."
Got this computer in April 2011 Guess I can't get the drivers. Would a full wipe update work for sure?
My computer works perfectly fine without lenovo drivers. Yours should at least be functional without hp ones (unless you have an amd graphics card maybe).

Nvm, I fixed it I used some windows update readiness checker and uninstalled my avg antivirus. After that, when I installed, it finally asked for my product key and I'm enjoying Windows 8 atm. I can't believe people are complaining about this, it's perfect even for laptops.

[Q] Trouble Installing Windows 8.1 HELP

I have windows 8, I noticed Microsoft had a free windows 8.1 update. I can't see the update, when I download a windows 8.1 tool by microsoft that allows me to download it it tells me that my pc does not meet the requirements. My laptop had windows 7 but I decided to go with Windows 8 Pro and it runs perfectly fine. I really need help installing this so I can get access to the store please help.
I'm no pro by any means, but I had trouble installing 8.1 on my surface. Make sure that you have all of the updates before you attempt. Sometimes you have to shutdown and restart, so the updates can install. That's where I had my problems. even though it should shutdown and restart, sometimes it doesn't.
Or you may have some scheduled updates that you need to update now. I hope that helps. ... it's a pain.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
You can see the update of 8.1in the windows store.... But all you have to do is update your windows 8. The essential file of store has to be upgraded to avail 8.1 update visible. Once you update windows 8. Restart your pc and then check your store.. 99% you should see windows 8.1 update.
The reason that your system doesnot meet requirement is because of 64 bit OS. I recommend to go with 32 bit. 8.1 does not need a lot hitech configuration. So you can install it.

Update a Windows 8 upgrade disk to Windows 8.1 with update 1

When i bought my laptop it did have Windows 7 on it. But i did have a option to bye Windows 8 cheap with a promotioncode. Sow i buyed Windows 8. But only this year i found out its a upgrade disk... Bummer. Well never likked Windows 8 much after trying testversion and seeing the final product. It made me think of Viste. (Not finnist) Never mind... I did not like the sow called Metro menu at that time. I dont like the way the settings work. Its not like i used to.
But i wanted to do somthing with this useless Windows 8 update disk. Windows 8.1 is a free update to Windows 8 users/byers. Sow i looked into some options to get Windows 8.1 with updates.. But no option i really liked. (Dont like putting in a ligit code after install. Ore running updates) What i did not want is install the Windows 8 upgrade on my Windows 7 laptop. Windows 7 works just fine. I could have made some image *.wim from the finall install.
Sow let me finally tell now what to do with the upgrade disk image. Dont use it. Its that simple! Get a Windows 8.1 with update from here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media The image will take a Windows 8 key. Thats what i wanted!!! Normally you would have to install Windows 8.1 with some default key form MS and put in the bought key after install (When using the key from the Windows 8 upgrade disk). That suck.
Well happy installing Windows 8.1 with update1 using you're Windows 8 key. That's my point haha.
Well thats not all for me. I wanted to install Windows 8.1 for a usb stick and with out to many clicks. Sow i did look into some programs like Nlite (XP) Vlite and sow on. Than i found https://www.ntlite.com/ from the same maker of Nlite and Vlite! The program Ntlite works great. Not like Nlite but still great. The build image can be tested with a program like wm player.
Sow in the and i put my Windows 8.1 on my minipc. (Conected to the tv) Windows 8.1 is just great for playing some music and movies. (I hope i can reinstall sometime with some Windows 8 driverpack by the way)
Original i found the information here: http://www.howtogeek.com/187525/how-to-perform-a-clean-install-of-windows-8.1-with-a-windows-8-key/

no driver worked......i try clean install of windows 7 and use my driver cd but,,there is no sound
So you formatted again and did another install of Windows 7, and it still doesn't show up? Is it onboard audio? Check the BIOS to ensure it's enabled.
Google brings up a lot of results, have you tried looking at them? What does Device Manager show?
If it still doesn't work, the sound card/motherboard if onboard might be dead.
I can't count on two hands how many people, including myself had this upgrade problem. Always audio or video.
Firstly, I'd check to see on the notebook/pc manufacturer website if they have Windows 10 drivers for your model. That's the best place to start.
Some older drivers are getting automatically updated through Windows Update. It seems Microsoft has encouraged some key driver updates. E.g. Intel integrated graphics.
Lastly, uninstall the driver, reboot your computer, now, install the driver again under compatibility mode for the version of Windows you have.
For audio, compatibility mode worked. Get this. My notebook came with Windows 7. The Windows 7 driver works (after about 20 attempts) but the Windows 8 driver doesn't. My understanding is that Windows 8 drivers are a bit more compatible with 10 than 7. But the 7 driver actually worked better.
Let us know how you get on.
