[Q] Gt keyboard performance improvements - Galaxy Tab 10.1 General

Hi all,
After reading many posts in XDA, I am not able to have an answer to the question I have since I bought my Galaxy tab.
The keyboard is very slow compared to a PC keyboard.
When i was with honeycomb 3.0 (a year from now), i thought it was the os.
But i flashed many many roms, it is always the same. I am now with a 4.1.2 rom, with overclocked kernel, The responsiveness is best, but it is far more slow that an Ipad keyboard (sorry sorry that is NOT a troll, please do not troll this thread (Ipad is a word that can sparkle many many trollers in three seconds). It is a fact, and I hate it since i made the comparison).
When typing fast, characters are swapped. For example, if you type two near letters like 's' and 'd' in loop 'sdsdsdsdsdsdsdsd' with reasonnable speed, the keyboard stops writing letters. You have to lift each finger and wait, or type like an old cop in a police station (you know with the two indexes of the two hands)
I even bought an usb keyboard, and to my great surprise, it is best yes, but not at all the same as a PC.
It is true that I am a fair typewriter, but I am not asking for perfection. I am disapointed with that. I tried all the sofware keyboard listed in this threads of XDA (not all but many many)
Does somebody have an idea, a tip, a rom or os setting, example : android.keyboard.sucks=false or realworld.typing.speed=true ?
Is it the os or the device ? I tried on other gt, it is the same. I intuitively think it is the os because I have seen an amelioration switching to jellybean 4.1.2.
thank you all

Desperate for a new phone with a keyboard but....

I could be persuaded to use this instead?
Whats the on-screen keyboard like? I know the screen is HUGE so i'm guessing the on-screen is fairly big? I need to be able to type fairly fast for taking notes in meetings etc and this is why I normaly buy phones with keyboards.
Thanks!!!
(please be honest, i'm about to spend £400 on this and I don't want that to be a waste of money)
The onscreen keyboard is good, but don't expect magic - if you feel you need a hardware keyboard then you will most likely be disappointed with what the HD2 offers.
In all fairness I never owned a WM phone with a full hardware keyboard, but I still make mistakes on the HD2's virtual keyboard same as I did with the virtual keyboard on my previous phone - so my conclusion is that it's not perfect.
Personally, I find FingerKeyboard better than HTC's anyway, I use that most of the time. Swype is good as well for accuracy but I find typing stuff is a bit slow because you're having to swipe your finger across a huge screen without lifting off to enter words.
I normally prefer hardware keyboards, however I have found that the HD2's screen is fairly large enough to work with. Also, use XT9 and go at it like you don't care if you misspell words, generally it will auto-correct you fairly well.
I personally prefer touchscreen keyboards rather than hardware keybaords, I find hardware keyboards a bit fidly to use.
The HD2 keyboard is pretty good, I think it's as good as the one on iphone, which I have just come from. The keyboard automatically corrects the majority of your mistakes, but you will still make the odd one. However, I also make the odd mistake using any keyboard, such as my laptop. In fact I probably make more errors typing on a PC/laptop keyboard as there is no auto correct function.
there's a thread about this on here somewhere with a lot of people complaining about the keyboard. it seems you either love it or really hate it. I would suggest going in a shop and ask to try it before you buy it. me personally I think its fine but don't take mine or anyone else's word for it, like I said a lot of people hate it, WITH A PASSION!
I owned a touch pro 2, which has the best hardware keyboard out there, and sure i was afraid i'll lose that sweat keyboard, but in the end i can say that i'm happy with the hd2's keyboard. Sure, i'm not as fast as i used to be on my tp2 but still...
I think you will be fine.
I've always had a HW keyboard since 2005, but after a few weeks practice with Swype, I'm very fast and more than happy given it means my phone is much thinner.
thanks for all input guys, very much appreciated!
Some touchscreen keyboards are ok, some are usable and some are good. Don't think that because a touchscreen keyboard on X device is good, therefore the HD2's will be good too. It isn't. It's a pig of a keyboard. Typing on it is one of the most frustrating tasks known to man. Sure it's a great device but you're asking specifically about typing on it.....and typing on it is horrendous. YMMV.
I can Swype faster than a HW keyboard

A lot of people prefer to type rather than sliding their fingers around in a whole new style. It shouldn't be necessary that we have to install new keyboards and get used to whole new styles of inputting text, just because the supplied keyboard isn't up to scratch. Personally I don't want to learn how to 'swype'.
Swype is the best solution for 1 handed typing. I dont see how its better than the regular keyboard unless you prefer to use 1 hand to type all the time.

Jeez, lighten up - there's nothing to learn, you just swipe your finger on the letters and that's it. If I wanted to type 'jerk' I would put my finger on J, drag to E, then drag to R and finally drag to K and that's it.
Hardly involves a learning curve... plus, that's just one option. If you don't like HTC's keyboard try another normal QWERTY keyboard, nobody's forcing you to try one of these newfangled keyboards. FingerKeyboard is a standard one and works better than HTC's IMO.
I use the standard HTC keyboard. I grip the device with my palms and type using my thumbs. My hands are freaking huge.
I can get approx 30wpm.
The auto-correct feature is simply amazing
I just came from a TYTNII with Hardware keyboard and we VERY worried about getting the HD2 without a keyboard as i type e-mail and SMS from my phone regularly for work purposes. So my choices were the HD2 or Touch Pro 2... The HD2 just had WAY too many PROS compared to the Touch Pro 2, so i took the plunge and got the HD2 and resolved myself to if i can't type well enough, then i'll just put up with the frustration or wait till i get back to the office to reply. Well, i was pleasantly surprised and can type fairly fast, probably SLIGHTLY slower than the hardware keyboard. I also have FAT fingers. I think the capacitive screen and multi-touch work in its favor to make typing a bit better on this phone than a normal (old type) touch screen. So, all in all, VERY happy with the HD2 without hardware keyboard. Oh, and i type in PORTRAIT mode, not Landscape!!! If i could marry my HD2, i would!

Hmm, I think that's in legal in Kentucky actually.
Well, in my country, our president just married his 5th wife with another on the way. He now has 18 children (of his own)! There should be no problems marrying my HD2...

He he nice! I love my HD2 too. I came from a Kaiser as well and my reservation was losing the superb hardware keyboard.
I found the HD2's standard keyboard flawed. The problem isn't the sensitivity as such but the fact that the keys are too small and close together. With an improved design it could be great.
BUT I found my solution, SWYPE! What a god send! I'm actually significantly faster with Swype than I was with my old Kaiser hardware keyboard. It really is that good. I am almost as fast as a PC keyboard.
And as for learning it, well it takes no time. I have demonstrated it to several people who have had a go and within a minute they are Oooing and arrring as they Swype words with ease. It's so intuitive there really is very little learning or adaptation required.

[BIG HANDS] Android keypads MURDER anything Windows Mobile 6.5 has to offer

Hands up anyone who has rather large hands like myself?
Typing on HTC's "Sense" UI touch keyboard on the HD2 was nothing short of painful for the time I was using it before discovering Swype. But let's leave Swype out of this and concentrate on simply 'touch input' keyboards available for the HD2.
I've been so close to wanting to sell my HD2 to buy a handset with a dedicated Qwerty keyboard (like the Desire Z) due to the fact that Android on HD2 hadn't really reached the reliability I needed for everyday use battery and stability wise, which meant using WM6.5 as my main OS. I like WM but my god: @!&% the on screen keypad!
Lately I've been using Resco Keyboard Pro 6 in WM which has helped a lot. To be honest ANYTHING would be an improvement over the awful keypad that comes with the phone though; why are the keys so friggin short? Why in the sam hell is the tactile feedback produced from pressing the keypad so pathetic? Why are the keys so cramped together?
Now let's come to Android... I can't really say why, but typing in Android, using any build with varying skins and layouts is a BREEZE compared to literaly anything I've ever used with Windows Mobile. Perhaps it's because more of the screen can be dedicated to the keyboard? Perhaps it's because the keys are a good hight and spaced nigh-on perfectly? Or because the vibration feedback given when typing is exactly the right response you need to 'feel' when typing fast?
Every build of Android I've tried on the HD2, and there have been plenty, has been such a breathe of fresh air when it comes to inputting text compared to WM.
I've now switched to DarkStone1337's "SuperRAM" Droid build and I have to say things are finally stable enough to kiss goodbye to WM for everything but 'on the road' use (TomTom)
Anyone who has large hands and has never really become accustomed to the HD2s touch screen keypad; before you sell up and go elsewhere, join the rest of us enjoying Android.
I know it might look like nit-picking from most people's perspective but if you have the sort of hands that could slap the population of a small village, you'll know what I'm talking about.
So, in my opinion and from entirely a large hands input perspective: Switching to Android is essentially like typing on an entirely different handset altogether.
you clearly have never used touchpal "4"

(Req) Note taking on Samsung Galaxy Tab - something that really works.

When I purchased my tab 10.1, I was absolutely sure I made the right choice, after reading reviews about all the major tablets in the market. Now, after three months, I am not so sure. The disappointment is largely because of the failure of giants like Google and android tablet manufacturers to not being able to provide an "awesome" experience, even after more than one and a half years of being in the market. This frustration is one of those times when you really want to like something, but you just feel constantly, it could be much much better.
Minor software like a responsive keyboard shouldn't be that far-fethched for android. While typing this post on my tab, it seems like I am typing on a device/software that is not even an alpha release, even after so many years since android launched. And of course, I compare it to the iPad's keyboard, although I would never buy an Apple product - I like android for a reason (freedom).
I had thought I would always be able to take notes in meetings on the tab, but I have come to a very disappointing realization that the tab is just not made for note taking - not even close. I bought the Adonit Jot Pro thinking it is the best stylus in the market and would help greatly with note taking. When I started using the stylus, it was clear to me there is nothing out there that can accomplish the functionalty of note taking on the tab - Jot Pro clearly failed, but it's not the stylus's issue. Just why can't the tab, although it has a better hardware than the iPad, not allow decent note taking functionality?
I started considering the Thinkpad tablet as it touts a note-taking functionality and the screen is especially made for that, but after reading and watching reviews for that product, it seems Lenovo has a lot of catching up to do. The Thinkpad is sluggish, doesn't record notes as its windows tablet counterpart does in terms of speed and accuracy. After getting excited about an android tablet - the Thinkpad - that would allow note taking, I am back to square one after reading its reviews. I am not going to buy it.
The developers here do an amazing job to make our tabs better, but why is the android OS still subpar compared go the iOS? It can't be just that it has to cater to multiple hardware options and manufacturers, or that is is newer than the iOS. I don't think my expectations are unrealistic.
As the keyboard is giving me such grief, I will cut this post short and come back to the request/point. Does anyone know of an app that does something simple and basic like palm-rejection and follows the writing on the tab closely, without any lag? I have used writepad, free note, genial, super note, and others, which were supposed to be good for the tab, but alas, nothing accomplishes not taking. I am aware the polling on the screen for the tab is lagged compared to that for the iPad (and just Why?!), but am sure something could be done about it.
Please don't suggest buying another tablet, especially the iPad, or that I should develop an app for myself. Any sensible reader (hope SamsungJohn is still around, and someone from Andy Rubin's team reads this post) would know what the point of this post is. Thanks.

Did you miss the part about palm rejection? Touchscreen Tune can't resolve that problem, as far as I can tell.
It also won't help with the lag associated with note apps that he was referring to.
I'm actually quite interested in a solution as well, as I would love to take this to my dev meetings when I don't want to lug around my laptop.
I'm kind of in the same boat as you. I would have liked to take notes with the G-Tab too but nothing I've found makes it ideal. There's an Asus note app in the dev section that helps a lot. For some reason it seems to accept responses better. It's what I used for short notes and phone numbers. For meeting notes, not so much.
ICS supports hand writing recognition natively. Hopefully there's not a h/w component required and that ends up being the long term solution for the Tab.
I wish there were an addon like the iPad's iPen for the Galaxy Tabs, it's an active digitizer:
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1225098940/ipen-the-first-active-stylus-for-ipad
1) Handwriting
I don't know why there isn't an app for the tab that supports palm rejection. From a dev point of view, I assume the problem lies therein that it isn't possible to block other touchevents, so you cannot "ignore" parts of the screen. This may easily be a hardware related issue, that further touchpoints are ignored when your hand rests on the screen.
2) "Minor software like a responsive keyboard shouldn't be that far-fethched for android."
Have you tried a ROM like Galaxy Tab? The keyboard (stock) is much better than the touchwiz one.
3) Notetaking
TouchScreenTune, if you haven't tried it yet. Check out the dev section. No, doesn't help with palm rejection BUT, makes the notetaking for me possible.
Added palm rejection to TouchScreenTune Test version in development thread:
PALM REJECTION:
added slider allowing to turn on palm rejection. That means that you hand can rest on screen while writing using stylus, but you will still be able to write since touch events from your palm will be ignored. Set palm detection slider value to 0 or maybe a bit more like 1-10 to enable this functionality.
there are some reports that the galaxy note pen works on the galaxy tab , it has thin tip and should be accurate in writing notes with supported applications
i dont use stylus but i use finger to write notes. i use ausus super note app and i feel comfortable compared to other notes app. you can try touchscreen tune if you havent tried it.

The latest touchscreen tune with palm rejection (from the thread in the dev section) works well with asus supernote.
you can try these...
try the onscreen keyboard apps like thumb keyboard or swiftkey tablet x .
Both are really very good.
Thumb keyboard with multitouch option is really very helpfull.
Everyone knows about the predictive powers of swiftkey.

Check the multi touch bottom it help when my palm touched the screen it stopped it from reading my palm touch
The reason for the choppiness is that androids UI and keyboard ius not hardware accelerated like apple's. Android also runs it as oje process, while apple tries to split it up to accommodate doing smaller things (so only one thing lags rather than whole ui).
I hope this is fixed more in ICS, but i have noticed that too. You cna put a custom rom on the tablet to make it a lot faster (stock rom is pretty buggy).
To be honest I'd recommend getting a bluetooth keyboard. I have one that's part of a case and it works perfectly. Aside from that I think you just need to use an app that suits you, I don't mind Polaris to be honest, but I find for speed typing I DO need the keyboard.
Huh? I'm on 3.1 and the standard Android keyboard (not the Samsung one that's on by default) works great. Very responsive, zero lag.
I have the tab 8.9 and there is no touchscreen app so a little worse off than the 10.1.
I use the app freenotes to take notes along with a pogo sketch stylus. THis makes the tab great for notetaking for me- very flexible and very easy to take clear notes in real time. Will also try the Asus supernote app soon.
I just wish it had the PDF and other document import export that apps like notability have on iOS- would make it perfect
i have motorola xoom, ipad 1, and now SGT,and i personally think that people who want to use their tablet to take note , they can do that. But to have a tablet+ stylus that they can comfortably write as they do with their notebook+pen is a different story.
I found Quill. It's quite good. It seems to be open source because it's available in Google Code and you can download the APK: http://code.google.com/p/android-quill/downloads/list
It have an option for disabling the bottom of the screen for resting your palm, though with TouchScreenTune you don't need it...
However, it's choppy in the GT10.1 unless you are rooted and install TouchScreenTune (which, by the way, was recently updated and now really works! Thanks dev!)

I tried almost everything, and the best ones at the moment, are TabNotes, Writepad for stylus, and Handrite and Genial writing for handwriting.
Everything else is either laggy or choppy or just doesn't work well. At least imo. Quill and Freenote don't even compare with the two first above in responsiveness.
Of course you need touchscreentune, the recommended settings work fine. Palm rejection works quite well too, with the new version. (thanks again Vitalijus).
I tested all this on a UK tab version hc 3.2 (XXKL2).
I haven't tried Writepad because for some reason cannot buy apps from my tab... But Quill fill my needs.

Blackberry to Galaxy Note

This is my first thread and not sure that it even warrants a mention at XDA, but thought if there were any existing Blackberry users out there that were contemplating swapping to the Galaxy Note, here are my compelling reasons!
Feel free to add your own (I'm sure there are a lot of ex-Blackberry users out there)! Here's my first five (not necessarily the top five... trying to keep this readable and brief!)
1) Touch screen.... I used a Blackberry since the very first version (the Blueberry as so many called it!) The screen was great and the scrollwheel interface amazing... But let's face it the latest BB touch screens just don't compete with the Android/iphones. Swiping a full screen to scroll just is amazing when you get over losing the wheel/trackball/trackpad. It does take a few days....
2) Stylus .... typing on the Blackberry was great (even with my big thumbs I got speed up) Tactile feedback was great. Now there is inbuilt Stylus and Swype keyboard (I know a lot of people have bagged swype but I find it great to slide the stylus around and how it matches words... TOOWOOMBA anyone?) And yes, I was a Palm Pilot user
3) Screen size.... my eyes are getting very old and I just couldn't read emails on the Blackberry anymore without changing the font size so large you could only read two or three lines at a time. 5.3" 1280x800 - wow! I can watch HD videos and so can two rows behind me on the bus!!
4) Phone size - yes it is big but remember how many people laughed at you the first time you pulled the blueberry out of your holster? (Some Nokias were just miniscule then) I have no problems taking a call on it and it does fit in all my pockets. I now love the chunky feel and robustness about the size.
5) Interface - Android is different - so very different - to the Blackberry ( I am embarrassed to admit that I had to google to find out how to change the wallpaper on the Note - since then I love Long Pressing!!) There are so many launchers and widgets and apps and developers like here at XDA that you can never be bored with your phone (Blackberry has amazing apps and I miss some of them but not for long!)
6...... Emails, Internet Browsing, Speed, Landscape mode, Customisation, Camera, ebooks, Google Play.... OMG there are so many reasons and so little space
Sorry for the length of this but really hope it finds a few Blackberry users out there that are tossing up on what to do like I did six months ago. I loved the Blackberry for so many years and defended it passionately against so many iPhone users. But now I have my wonderful Galaxy Note and I have never regretted my decision..... Over to you!
I actually still use both..
Why?
'coz every people here (Indonesia) use blackberry and nowadays they starts to ask BB pin instead of phone numbers. So yeah have no choice but staying with my good old bold 9700.
However most of time i left my Blackberry on my work desk and have GNote always on my hand to work. I'm not saying its replace my computer or notebook but yes i spend less time on my computer..
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk
I have both.. a Bold 9930 with touchscreen and the N7000
IMO They are very different devices and really cannot be compared as, while they both have phone functions, their focus, priorities and strengths are very different.
After all, for every advantage the Note has, the BB has others.. The Note is not a better phone, its a less reliable, less robust, slower operating, more delicate communications device than the BB.. It is larger, battery lasts me 1/8 the length of time, its reception is not as good, its efficiency is less and its operation more complex...
The Note..? Well, in every other way and measure, with regards to infotainment the Note of course rocks.. but anyone looking to hop from BB as their only device to Note as their only device needs to fully understand what their PERSONAL priorities of a device are..

Came from a BB....will never go back...
Size and speed matters
Still use both.
Typing on a QWERTY pad of the Blackberry is a breeze. All my official emails and chats are on Blackberry. The battery is good too. lasts a day or more with extensive use.
Even on 2G connection Blackberry is unbeatable, all mails and chats come thru instantly.
I love having the blackberry and gnote combi
Never had a blackberry. Frankly speaking never liked physical keyboard on phones. Just a waste of space (in my opinion). That space could have been used for browsing. I was using wm Jas Jar before (In the old days ). Never joined the bandwagon of either Blackberry or Iphone. Note is the best phone I ever had. Its better than my S 2.

Running S5 stock keyboard in S8

Greetings,
I have recently purchased an S8 after owning my S5 since july 2014. I absolutely loathe the stock keyboard as compared to the S5, it is horribly clunky for my typing style. I want to install this: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2748065
But i am assuming that this is not possible at this current time in the game with the S8? Because maybe the files cant be implanted into system as yet. Or even the apk wont work after doing that anyway?
I literally want that old keyboard. Exactly as it sits with the spaces it has around each button. If there is an alternative keyboard that literally has the same spacing and feel to it and does not have a difference for where certain buttons are and such, then im open to it but so far, all the major alternative keyboards are nowhere near what i want. Odd request but i absolutely hate this clunkyness. I can type so fast and accurate on my s5. Even when its lagging.
Much appreciated if someone has some insight into my whiney obscure problem
Cheers
Holly hell, are you serious? that keyboard? did you search the google play store? maybe there is a keyboard, just like the one the s5 had

Yeah play store seems to have a lot of skins for an actual S5 or crappy "classic" keyboard skins. And yes i am serious. I never paid much thought to it until i got this phone and started mashing the wrong letter here and there every 5 words and typing much slower to achieve correct spelling. Must be due to the smaller area of each key that helps with my accuracy because the s8 has minimal gap between keys and i just come off clunky with it. Of course i can get better at it as i have over the past 3 weeks, but i just want that classic s5 keyboard with large spacing between keys. lol
Have you tried Gboard. I think it is very smooth keyboard with great prediction.
It's not really about the new keyboard per say, it's just that it's a completely different phone with different ergonomics, so it takes a while to get used to it.
Go home man you're drunk
You want that ugly laggy KB
Lmao
I won't criticize because everyone have different tastes (I'm in love with new Samsung UI ) but as mentioned above, Gboard is much more customizable than Samsung's one.
I don't say every keyboards available on play store are bad but in my opinion only a few (like 2 or 3 ) are actually good , Gboard 1st place , I said this because almost all keyboards with themes are not only bad but a massive advertisement , ads everywhere , in notification , in keyboard, etc etc , and won't say anything about privacy and battery usage
