i am really slow when typing with the keyboard the keys are narraower than what id like them to be and if i type faster i make too many mistakes. i type a lot my my speed didnt improve much since i bought the device 3 weeks ago. the fastest way for me to type is to use the compct qwerty in the hd-keyboard
am i the only one suffering too much from this? any tips to make my life easier? and btw, i type with my two (fatish) thumbs
sony better fix this in the x2. this is what i hate about the keyboard
-keys too narrow
-too much free spaces between the keys
-not enough travel distance or feedback on some keys
-touch pro keyboad has the very very very usuful number row that help greatly in speed typing and dialing.
-area of keyboard is big but not utalised properly. probably to make the design more attractive
There's no real tricks or hints anyone can give you. It's just a matter of practise, practise and some more... you get the point. You shouldn't expect to type at keyboard speed with two thumbs though.
Granted, I sometimes doublepress a key as well, mainly because the tactile response is kind-of so-so.
i understand what you say. and i dont expect a magical trick that will double my speed. it just frustrating that my typing speed is almost the same as the day i bought the thing. the funny part is that the other day i got a change to play with the touchpro for the first time and my speed was so much better

I'm a little faster with a Fuze, I've noticed. I think that's the same as your Touch Pro.
I think with both the Touch Pro and the Xperia, it's one of those, "You get it...or you don't" things. People who like one aren't going to like the other an you just cannot talk them out of one and into the other.
The little E71-2 will probably really surprise you with how easy you can type.
Sometimes I'll switch the SIM into an E71-2 when I have to carry something with a smaller profile, and after using it for a day I wonder why on earth I ever got the Xperia.
(sigh)
But, you know what?
I'll probably still get an N97.
Yeh, coming from a P1i i reckon SE should have done some R&D on the keyboard before releasing it. The P1 was absolutely magical as far as typing goes, very close to keyboard speeds . . . I bought the X1 as an upgrade from my P1i (and because it has a qwerty), but honestly, I think about going back to my P1i . . . love the keyboard on that
i am typing quite fast with mine .
one trick could be to use the autocompletion using tab space when the good world is found
Practice makes perfect....
thanks tylwith the tab space was surprisengly more effective than what i excpeted.
my biggest issue is that i tend to press a wrong and close lettero the one i really want. i wonder if i can install a dictionay that puts that in consideration. some on screen keyboards do that very well like pocketcm or the iphone
Get a dremel, take one of the conical tips for it and grind the end of your fingers down to points. Should make hitting the right keys a bit easier, eventually when the pains stopped...
Seriously I doubt you've got much bigger hands than me (if at all) and I don't have to many problems with the keyboard.
Practice some more, writing out war&peace in pocket word should do it..
Hi
Does anyone with Nexus one had experience with cell phone with a physical keyboard?
I am looking to know how good is the N1 keyboard compared to milestone or cliq or backflip...?
Thanks
Well... I used to use a Blackberry 8830 personally... Sure, it's more of a portrait setup, but whatever..
Either way, the N1 w/ Haptic feedback enabled is actually quite easy to use. Obviously it'll still take some getting used to, but it's plenty good for me. Without the feedback, it'd be a completely different story imho.
What I've learned is this: With time, you'll be just as comfortable with a virtual keyboard. Though there IS a learning curve.
honestly, with the text correction, it works great. I'm coming from an xperia, and a TYTN II, so I've been with physical keyboards for a while.

This is a huge bonus once you get settled. You'll need to edit in some of your own personal corrections (Hold down on the word you wish to add to auto-correction until is says "Saved"). You'll end up incorrectly correcting some commonly used words initially. My main ones are apps (usually changes to Alps ) and "Haha" which changes to Bahamas... Everyone will find a few words that auto-correct in ways you wish they didn't
But yeah... Earlier, I don't recall exactly what I was sending to my wife... but "Bolton" made its way into my sentence. LOL!
Oh... Don't forget! You can use Speech-to-Text on this device. Simply swipe your finger to the right edge on the keyboard, and it brings up a speech menu. With practice, you may find that you actually prefer it. (Again, this will take some self-training, due to the way we all enunciate things differently)

I used the 6800, TP and then the TP2 for reference. I was convinced that I *needed* a physical keyboard as typing on the soft keyboards of the above mentioned phones was always error prone for me. The TP2 was better than the others due to the larger screen size, but still was not as easy as the hardware keyboard.
With that said the soft keyboard on the Nexus One (with haptic feedback enabled) is really easier to type on than the above phones. At this point I don't feel that I need the hardware keyboard any longer, but there is definitely a bit of time required to get used to the soft keyboard if you are used to a hardware keyboard.
I would say the soft keyboard with auto correct is actually quite good on the Nexus One. It works well enough that I am not motivated to sell the phone and get a new one, so it can't be all bad
As far as typing goes, is there any way to change input language? I am Brazilian and I have to change it to Portuguese-br in order to type...
Like everyone else on here generally seems to agree, once you actually get used to it, it won't be an issue for you. And if you get the HTC_IME, (I know, it looks kinda pixelated, but not so much so that I can't deal with) it makes things even better.
It's really good once you get used to it. I'm using Swype at the moment which is even more awesome, but no voice dictation on it yet. The funniest auto-correction for me so far was "haha" to "bahamas," and I forget what I texted someone, but it ended up sending "burial phone."
hey guys, how is texting on the google nexus? is the qwerty touch keyboard tight or is it finger friendly?
Stock keyboard is passable. Some people are okay with it, some aren't. It's not the best, but I could live with it.
Better Keyboard and Smart Keyboard both provide very good alternatives, as does the ported HTC IME. And then there's Swype, which changes the way you type utterly and--if you can get used to it--lets you type as you've never typed before on a soft keyboard: at a ridiculous speed while retaining high accuracy.

I can fly on the stock keyboard in landscape... portrait is a bit tight, but that is to be expected. I wish they had a comma on the main screen, and a few other tweaks, but for me I can just fly!
There are other good options, and of course with time, all of these will get better.
I find the stock keyboard very good - word suggestion and automatic replacement is fantastic.
I think the trick is not to worry about hitting the right keys as the automatic suggestion and replacement takes are of everything.
I use swype... LOVE IT
once you get swype you cant beleive its even possible fantastic
hmm I have the htc touch hd running win 6.5...but I'm considering getting the nexus and selling my hd...do all of you looove ur nexus? lol if you don't mind can you guys state some cons regarding the phone...
Can't find swype in the market...
Swype for Android is currently in beta. Check out this thread for download link for Nexus One and release notes. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=625910
Swype has not been released publicly yet (not for Android, atleast, other than on the newly released MyTouch 3G), the only way to obtain it is through the leaked apk file, and installing it that way. I believe there is an entire thread about it in the Themes & Apps section (for the N1 Obviously).
how about swype for hd2?

I sold my Touch HD to get the Nexus One and don't regret it one bit.
I've been an avid WM user and the move to Android was a breath of fresh air.
I can't pick out any issues with the device - my advice would be to go for it
wow this is seriously an amazing way to type. at first i was skeptical but wow. you guys should definitely try it out
yea I plan on listing my hd as well and getting the nexus..how much did u sell the hd for..and did u sell it on this forum?
I also sold my HD for the Nexus and have never looked back! The N1 is amazing, fast, fun, etc.
btw, sold my customized HD on ebay a while ago for around $300.
I too am using Swype. I absolutely love it, especially now that it has most of the things I type that aren't in the dictionary learned. And it will be even better when I finally get my antiglare screen protector as well. Sometimes my fingers get a little sticky which slows me down. However, once you get used to it, and your fingers glide smoothly on the screen, it's stupid how quickly and accurately you can type. People in a bar or at school will just look at me and say "what in the hell..." LOL!
I'm very comfortable using the stock android keyboard - gotta admit it took some time adjusting, coming from iPhone and Hero. The HTC IME input method seemed to have a better input prediction and correction so I'm hoping to see the higher res version for Bravo/Incredible ported sometime in the near future!
At the moment I'm going back 'n forth between Smart Keyboard Pro and the stock android keyboard - texting with Smart Keyboard Pro, and inputting passwords/passcodes with stock android keyboard (that warning that Smart Keyboard gave me scared me off using it for inputting passwords/passcodes). I hope Smart Keyboard Pro would allow some theming in future releases.
Better Keyboard is also a nice keyboard replacement app, but I find it does tend to skip some of my keypresses/inputs.
EDIT:
just registered for the beta of Swiftkey @ http://www.swiftkey.net/
The mockup looks good, aesthetically.. hopefully it lives up to its claims
Yea Swype is pretty awesome, I put it on my bfs G1 just for S&G, and he doesnt even use the slide out keyboard anymore
Man had a G1 for a year and then switched to the Nexus 0ne. At first i was stuck on wanting another keyboard phone but i am extremely happy with my N1. Keyboard could be a lil bit better but i am actually quite happy with it. touch accuracy can be a lil off but that is to be expected, i havent seen anything that is a deal breaker. I have used the Iphone OS, and was a MW user since 5.0 till 6.1 and there really isnt any going back for me. I say make the jump!
I find typing on Swype addictive. Never mind the games, this is all I need.
Typing out chunks of Shakespeare on it is stupidly fun.
Just wanted to start a thread about the Slide that came out today. Feel free to voice your opinion. Remember, everyone is entitled to their opinion. No flaming/bashing please.
Here's mine:
I went to T-Mobile after work to check out the phone. I was on a waiting list. I got to handle one of the staff member's MT Slide. If you haven't seen pictures, it reminds me of the MT3G. It's styled after it - no surprise there. I played around with it for a few minutes. It was very responsive! Blows my G1 out of the water and mine is rooted with CM5.0.7 Stable (no cache, no JIT, no oc'ing). The keyboard feels very good. I actually like the click action of the keys when you press them. I would say that the keys are better spaced than the keys on the G1. However, the Slide only has 4 rows. I still prefer the G1 keyboard with 5 rows. But if you're used to a 4-row keyboard, the Slide won't disappoint.
I held my G1 next to it, and they're similar in size. The screen on the Slide is slightly larger (3.4" vs 3.2"). My G1 however feels more solid (the body is made of metal). The Slide is plastic and looks plastic. I didn't like the feel of the slide action when opening the keyboard. The G1 slide action, while forceful, feels solid. The Slide had some grinding/scraping against the backplate of the screen (another website mentioned this as well).
I'm not to keen on the optical trackpad. I wish they had kept the luminescent trackball from the MT3G. Umm...what else. I don't care for the icons with the square bubble/outline around them. Tacky in my opinion. And the bubbles obstruct what's in the background. Hopefully, there will be a way to disable them.
I decided not to buy it and wait it out. I interrogated the rep about June 19. She didn't say anything other than that there won't be an iPhone. I could care less. Pressing her further, she mentioned that HTC is working on a high-end android phone with a keyboard, but won't likely be out till the end of the year. What really turned me off about the phone was the plastic look and feel. After owning the G1, I don't think I could go back to a plastic phone. But that's just me.
I realize this is a mid-range phone aimed at the general populace. In my humble opinion, this phone is a good representation of what Android is capable of. Everyone compares new phones to the iPhone. It seems like the defacto standard. However, I think Android is at the point that it can set the standards now - especially phones like the Evo, N1, Incredible, Galaxy. Oh, she did say the Samsung Galaxy will be coming to T-Mobile. Nice specs, but looks like an iPhone clone which is why I will probably pass on it as well. And it doesn't have a keyboard.
Sorry for the long post.
Buyers Remorse
Wish I would have done the same as you.
Went right in and bought it. The phone is horrible.
Recent Apps in Notification bar is too large for the resolution and takes up all the space.
The keyboard is horrible. Multiple characters on each key, all the same color tricks the eye and you end up mistyping more than normal. Other phones use 2 color sets, Color 1 for Alpha + functions and Color 2 for secondary key functions. G1's keyboard is by far the best physical keyboard there has ever been. 5 row Qwerty, 2 colors, and spaced appropriately.
Trackpad works for short navigation movements, but doesn't roll or stay "active" for scrolling down more than 3 or 4 names at a time.
MyModes is a crap version of Locale minus all the good stuff, plus some of the useless stuff.
Multiple notifications if you text/email/etc is from someone in your MyFaves (which is now short for Speed Dial).
MyFaves is a horrible looking and difficult to navigate or read updates interface with your friends pictures.
The screen leaks light just above the home/menu/back/genius button on both sides.
When you slide the phone open you can hear the plastic on plastic (which will eventually wear out)
There is a lot to like...
...and a lot to hate.
I think the hardware is fantastic and I like some of the customized features. The friend stream widget and the messages widget are pretty darn slick. The My Faves and assorted T-Mobile apps not so much.
It would be really nice to be given the ability to uninstall some of the apps that come preinstalled. For instance...
AppPack
Barcode Scanner
My Account
My Device
MyTouch Music
Peep
News
Stocks
Weather
Visual Voicemail
None of these can be removed from the phone without root access. Feh. I cannot wait for root...
Root can't save this phone.
And here's something rather peculiar...
I made a disk image of the original 8 GB class 2 SD card that shipped with my Slide and restored it on to my 16 GB class 10 card with a 1024 MB EXT4 partition and the rest set aside for FAT storage.
The device, however, recognizes it only as an 8 GB SD card and does not reflect the ~15 GB of storage that should be available to it. And mounting the drive on my Mac over USB displays the same information. But when I pop the card out and throw it in my Android Developer Phone (Dream running CM5) it's recognized as exactly what it was partitioned as.
Very weird.

Sorry you regret buying the phone. You have 2 weeks or 30 days to return the phone depending on where you are.
I agree the G1 keyboard is the best out there. I'm sure if you play around with the keyboard some, you'll get used to it.
I do wish some of the pre-installed apps could be removed. Takes up precious space.
Coming from the list of phones in my sig, the MTSlide is superior in all ways...
Most if not all above mentioned drawbacks/flaws are true. I'm going to wait for some custom hardware keyboards on ebay then swap it out. The keyboard is the only thing I TRUELY hate. The g1s HKB was damn near perfect. this reminds me of the spiderman font.
Just need root, and some custom roms.
No live wallpapers.....
I think this phone will be good for people looking for a simple fix or android virgins lol I haven't messed with the phone yet but it seems to be nice I like espresso ui. I think the thing I hate the most about the phone is the price. Just because your flagship phone is a mid-range devie you can't sell it as though it's high end...But it'll prolly drop. One really good thing I heard (and I hope it's true) Is that this device can be overclocked to 1ghz has anyone else heard about this ?
I really don't understand these negative stereotypes and the desire to run a bone dry ROM. I have found a lot to like about the Espresso UI and the way this phone handles tasks. Sure, Faves and the MyTouch Music apps are bloated but everyone is talking like the phone is a piece of garbage that should be thrown out because of it. The MyTouch Music app might be worthy to people who listen to Top 100 but not any of us in to punk/alt rock.
The AWESOME preloaded software includes
-Open Office
-Friendstream Widget(Love having twitter and facebook stream through in one widget)
-Contacts/people app is very well done with the ability to link to social networks
-Genius button does work very well with a southern accent
-Gallery is a million times faster than G1's
-Home has wonderful Pinch to Zoom
-My Modes is very useful
-The Music app gets a plus for being able to be used on the lock screen but ^3 is better overall
Seriously folks, this is not a bad phone. I'm contemplating not rooting (gasp) if froyo comes out soon because I used rooting mostly to compensate for the G1's lack of ram (compcache), Apps2SD, and tether. Sure it would be nice to get rid of one or two apps on here but I can live with it without condemning the entire phone as a whole.
As simplyTravis said, I'm not sure why people are so unimpressed with this phone. I've got an N1 and I picked up the MT3GS yesterday. I'm already more impressed with the MT3GS than I am with the N1.
I love the HTC Espresso eye candy with all the extra widgets, the clock with the weather, all kinda of add-ons. Not to mention, its a BLACK theme. I can't stand the white and light colors that Google uses on stock android.
The keyboard isn't great. I would have preferred a 4 row, numbers on their own row with symbols. But, I can't complain. It works, and with the little I've used it, I've already gotten pretty quick at it. I still prefer Swype for simple texts etc, and the HTC skin is nice. I've tried the genius button, but so far I haven't gotten it to work as advertised.
Overall impressions? This phone will be a hit. It was meant for the mid-market, and it will impress quite a few people. It is responsive, fast, and again, the eye candy. Good stuff.
Short and simple:
I'd like the G1 keyboard back, but I can get ovey this.
Any My* app should go, along with any other T-Mobile specific software
I find Modes absolutely useless, but thats just me.
SenseUI is OK at best. Will determine to keep it or not after root comes and see what kind of space and/or performance improvements come of it.
Genius is OK as well, but I'll find little use. Would like to map it to another app.
I don't know why all the hate. I'm really liking this phone so far. It's very snappy, I love the Espresso UI, I've owned the G1 and I prefer this keyboard. Even though I got used to the chin on the G1 it still bugged me, with this it's not a problem. We'll see how I feel in a week but so far so good IMO.
I've had the G1 since launch and I've been waiting for a suitable replacement. Unfortunately, I can't afford a high-end android like the N1 or service like Verizon, so a mid-level phone like this I'll take. Besides, it won't be long until it's rooted and we're overclocking the processor.
And I'm waiting to get it until the 19th just in case.
SD Card Issues
Anyone else been able to replace the SD card with a larger/faster version?
As I wrote above, my 16 GB class 10 card is being recognized as only an 8 GB card when inserted into the Slide.
Would love to see someone independently verify this weirdness.
Im really hoping with the root that I can just delete some system stuff and add wifi tether and thats it. I dont want to get into flashing ROMs I love how fast and snappy the phone is and wouldnt want to take anything away from that by starting to get too complex like my g1. I just want more app memory and of course root access bc all this tmo crap bothers me and I want complete control of the phone
I love the g1 over this phone. Yea the keyboard is different but im already use to it in two days. I cant go back to my g1 after this. I love the responsiveness, larger screen, and the damn speed. The only thing i miss is the call and end button. Other than that I love this phone.

did anyone notice that the headphone jack is not flush? i haven't tried it with the supplied ear buds but my other ear buds don't go in all the way.
The speed is impressive. I've never actually used a Nexus, but with how this phone is doing so far, I'm not worried about it being slow and laggy in 2 months. I've got a TON of apps running on it now.
I think the UI is a little over the top. It's supposed to be a "light" version of Sense, but I see it as actually being more complex. Only thing I don't really like about it is the icons though, other than that I'm happy with Espresso.
The only other complaint I have is the abundance of "Faves" and T-Mobile crap taking up valuable real estate on the phone. You can tell Tmo had a heavy influence on this phone, and that's what I don't like about it.
So far, it is a definite upgrade to the G1. We can complain about the keyboard (which I do vehemently), but that doesn't mean there aren't many upgrades. Obviously it is much faster. I do like some of the custom UI and the Genius Button is pretty cool.
It is true, 145mb of app storage with all the pre-loaded crap. My two biggest complaints about the G1 were speed and memory and it looks like I only solved one of those with better speed. Overall, the Slide is a good phone that all of us original G1 users have "waited" for. Swype works great and Froyo will help with the memory issue with Apps2SD.
Until another 5-line beast comes to TMo, I'll be happy with this!
7 out of 10.
I like the speed and look of phone, wish it was light as the original mt3g.the keyboard is ok but I don't like the roughness felt when sliding it out and wish it had a row dedicated to numbers and symbols.I like the ui minus the bubble icons and faves gallery.wish I knew how to make custom themes like the one you can dl from tmo.the touchscreen is too resposive constantly senses touch when using the hardware keys at bottom and swype always detects wrong word or letter where as it had damn near perfect accuraccy on original mt3g.a lot of bloatware and not much internal storage,we need apps2sd.I hope it gets rooted soon so I can see what it can really do.I heard 800mhz is definetly achievable
We all know that Samsung is coming out with the SGS2, and there is always a constant theme since 4th Q of 2009, the Hero/Moment, Evo/Epic. So is there a chance that the Samsung/Sprint variant of the SGS2 would come with a keyboard and 3d?. I would pass on the evo3d if the sgs2 for sprint came with a keyboard and 3d.
I am not sure if they are gonna make the SGSII with a keyboard. I really hope they don't because the phone is extremely thin and at this point id rather have a slim phone then a keyboard that skips when i start typing too fast.

+1 on not having a keyboard. I type so much faster without it.
I'm going to be extremely angry if the next galaxy that comes with sprint has a keyboard.
I have to say that I could live without a keyboard at this point as well.
Previously, when the largest screen was only 3.2", I still needed it for my big hands. But with the Epic, I've noticed that I can do either way with plenty of room to spare.
I'd buy a slim SGSII if it was offered and it was a significant, practical upgrade.

While I can do w/o the keyboard for texting and such, there is no way I could live w/o one for my SNES and NES games.

Yeah the keyboard is real nice for emulation, but phone+case makes this phone way too thick, and after comparing my phone with the Verizon fascinate I was fairly astonished at how much thinner they could make essentially the exact same phone without a keyboard.
I like the keyboard for emulators and sometimes to email or text if im doing a super long message...
Mainly i always want a keyboard for gaming tho...
so i want another keyboard phone!!!
Way too thick? Are you guys looney? lmao
How much thinner does it need to be!?
It's all relative. I think the phone thickness is perfectly fine, even with the keyboard. The next generation with a keyboard would be even thinner, though it's not necessary for me personally.
I really hope we continue to see hardware keyboards on the high end smartphones.

Do you keep your phone in a case? I agree that case-less it's close to the thinness I need, but I view a case as a necessity so that kind of screws things up.
Coming from a phone that only had a virtual kb I love a physical kb. I never type with vkb unless I'm sending a 2-3 lettered text.

a sliding hardware keyboard is a must for me. i can't see myself buying a phone without one.
Meh, I'm rather split about having a keyboard or not. I'd love having an ultra slim keyboardless phone, but at the same time I'd miss the convenience of a keyboard, especially for really long messages... just like I did now writing this post. Lol
it has to have keyboard AND 3d screen for me not to get the evo3d. if just the keyboard. im not sure i would get it.
I prefer a physical keyboard. It's why I passed on EVO and waited for the Epic in the first place.
These ppl are crazy talking about "no keyboard". Man please, I'm using a keyboard now with this. Go get the next gen evo or something. The keyboard is a plus, screw a "thin phone" that's petty.
I hate "Top Flight Security Mods"
yeah, i mean, i don't want a thick as a brick phone, but i'd rather have an Epic with a KB than any of the other Galaxy S phones. any future phone model that adds that amount of thickness with a KB over a no KB model will be thin enough for me.
A physical keyboard and better camera are prerequisites to replacing my Epic.

I agree. I sue the screen for texting and light typing, but I like having the hardware option. It's something else for devs to play with and it's a MUST for emulators (especially since the bluetooth game-gripper got shot down).
If they improved the keyboard I'd be sold. That's my only gripe...I got this phone because of the keyboard and then it doesn't even work properly. It misses keys so I barely use it. If it functioned as I needed it to I'd be good. I love the phone.
