Hey guys,
I'm wondering if I want to install windows 8 on my macbook pro via bootcamp. Do I need to buy this version because I heard Microsoft stopped selling retail version of windows. So, I found out that I can only order it through Amazon not through Microsoft's store. So, is that only place to buy it? kind of confused

The Microsoft web store along with other online stores & physical shops are selling Retail Windows 8. Why would you want to pay the higher rate that the OEM version costs?

Wait, I check microsoft's store and they only have window 8 upgrade version. They don't have full install version of windows 8. So, my only option is to buy from amazon the system builder version. I actually want the legit version and I'm fully aware there are torrents available on the net.... It's weird that microsoft isn't selling full retail version of windows 8.... Thanks for the reply

You could always use a torrent version of Windows 7 and a legit version of Windows 8. To the Windows 8 Upgrade it doesn't matter that you are using a Torrent version of Windows 7 as you can just tell the Installer not to save anything and jobs a good one.
How much is the OEM version of Windows 8 as an MSDN account could work out cheaper in the long run as you get a free version of Windows 8 and every new version that comes out while you are still subscribed?

Is that confirmed? If I upgrade from a torrent version of Windows 7 will it work? That would be a great way of going legit. The System Builder version is not available on the Microsoft site yet

I've done it with my so called OEM Version of Windows 7 Ultimate that turned out to be a cloned DVD and it worked. It's just there to prove that you are eligible for the Upgrade license that's all. If you do it from a fresh Install you don't need to put any cracks on your system, and just wipe the Install with the Save Nothing option in the Windows 8 Installer, And you've got a clean Windows 8 Pro install but just with the windows.old Folder, and what you save on not having to get the OEM Version can go on some apps from the Windows Store.

i just use MS Security Essentials....like all other software Antivirii ones will need to be fully written for the new OS and HTML5.
I expect theres a lot of open doors in the Developer preview to send annonymous reports back to MS about problems, crashes, confilcts etc!!
ESET Smart Security x86 work fine. Updated definitions and everything.

Avira AntiVir Personal - Free Antivirus 10.2.700 (latest) seems to work fine with W8 DP 8102 X86
Edit:
Seems to be an issue with the Update, says its on the latest but it isnt...
Even after an manual Update with the latest Definitions Downloaded here it says Virus Definitions are from 21.07.2011...

No matter if i install Avira as Administrator or in Windows 7 or XP SP3 compatibility Mode,
it always is stuck to the Virus Definitions from 21.07.2011 and says its the latest...
I have an feeling Avira knows its running on a Win8 machine and is waiting for updates especially for Win8
(i think this because i see different version numbers in app between Win7 and Win8 with the same installer package)
So far no luck with newer Updates than 21.07.2011
But my "Test" Virus was killed immediately - so its working

Yes and No,
let me explain why:
I like the thougt that there is a basic (essential) protection, better than noting and even not bad!
But i dont like the Fact that there could grow an big monoculture without alternatives...
So its an very good step for standard protection, but it should not get too "big" so commercial solutions will die...
Just my 2cents

Hi there, I was just wondering if it was possible to slim down the installation image of Windows Developer Preview? I'm in need of installing it to a 16GB SSD so it's going to be quite a squeeze. For Windows 7 I could use Vlite, but I'm guessing this is not the same with Windows 8, any more.
Is there a similar utility for Windows Developer Preview yet like Vlite?
Thanks!
i don't thinks so it will be possible

You can use the Windows 8 ADK which can be downloaded from M$'s site.
or....
You can use the windows 7 GImageX v2 to mount the wim, edit, and apply. I plan on testing the images in vlite and RT7lite. I will report my findings here as I thought I was the only one interested.

I am also interested in this since I plan to install this on USB thumb drive.
Use WinReducer its for Windows 8,and you can slim it farther by using Vlite but Vlite is harder to use and you can mess up your iso. With WinReducer you don't have to worry about messing up.

Hi,
This is (as far as I know) the first dump of wp8. It's based on the 9900 (emulator) build and is meant for cooking roms (for WP7/8 devices)
It has all 51 languages and all 3 screen resolutions
Good luck devs,
Download link:
http://htcfanboys.com/download/sianto1997/?action=view&file=14516
If you use this in a rom, please mention me.
greetz
WOW!Thank you very much!
Do you know that emulator have x86 version of WP8? It's impossible to use it. So your dump is really useless, even more than me.
Shhh... It's easy to dump the emulator, just mount VHD.

Yes and no. As it's possable to run on the hardware (all 1st gen are the same CPU wise and 2nd gen are pretty close still) and even Microsoft said so, there are no drivers designed for it. Nevermind the OS is designed for a dual core CPU, so performance could be a big hit.
The HD2 was the ONLY Windows Mobile device to get WP7 and the only reason why that is was because Microsoft used the HD2 in testing WP7 and someone "leaked" the drivers needed. If things follow suit, the chances of getting a WP8 rom running on a WP7.5 device might be like finding that needle in a haystack...might happen but, I would not hold my breath.
I also would love to see it tho.....
Since there isn't an easy way to upgrade from the Windows 8 Preview to Windows 8.1 Final without losing Installed Programs, would a System Restore Point created in Windows 8 prior to Installing the 8.1 Preview from the Windows Store work e.g. once Windows 8.1 is released use the Restore point created before the Upgrade to 8.1 Preview to roll back to Windows 8 and then Upgrade to Windows 8.1 from the Windows Store work, or is there a pre-programed limit of Restore Points meaning that a Restore Point created today or tomorrow would be deleted by the time Windows 8.1 goes final?
I'm asking this question since I've had to re-install Windows 8 onto my Laptop after Upgrading the HDD, and don't fancy having to re-install Office again, I don't mind having to re-install everything that gets installed between trying the 8.1 Preview and going to 8.1 Final but Office and other largish Installs I want to have to keep to a minimum.
Roland
I have read that MS have changed it now and 8.1 final is an easy upgrade from the preview.
You should be able to keep all your programs without reinstalling.

Thanks. Where did you read it, as the last I heard from the Microsoft Community was that everything except Programs is saved, and this was the answer to a question I asked on the Microsoft Community?
It seemed a bit of a stupid idea to be able to go from a working Windows 8 system to a working Windows 8.1 Preview system, but then go from a working Windows 8.1 Preview to a partially working Windows 8.1 system and then have to reinstall all programs.

Hey,
I edited the manifest in many WP 8.1 Emulator XAPs (from dump) so they would run on Windows Phone 8. At this time, i've not tested it because my 8X is still in repair :crying:
If you test it please post if it works
I know this should be in the development forum, but I'm new, i can't post to it
It doesn't work on Lumia 925
I can't slideload any of these 3 apps on my lumia 925.
If you just changed the platform version in the manifest from 8.1 to 8.0 it won't work - I've already tried that myself and all deployment tools give the same error code.
The only thing from this SDK that I could sideload to my dev unlocked 820 was the new games hub, but besides changing the platform version, I had to remove the OEM_DEPLOYMENT capability as well.
You could, however, try sideloading these into the 8.0 emulator and see if they work.

I can't deploy them in my windowsphone8
After removing the PRHeader thing, I was able to sideload Music and IETileManager.
Music crashes (Wish it didn't Music+Videos is annoying >.>)
IETileManager just has a blackscreen (Doesn't help that I don't know what it does either xD

As the name suggests, it has something to do with IE's live tiles, and it seems to me more like a component, rather than an actual app you can use. If you look at the resources, it has a wide tile for IE, which IE itself doesn't offer (yet), so that kinda explains it...
Ok, removed TileManager and edited OneDrive so it will work
please test and review
Isn't it kinda pointless, when there's OneDrive already in the store? Or does this one have some magical abilities?

I don't know, I don't think that the app is completely similar to the OneDrive app in the store. I will test it when I get my phone back.
