I just got a Nexus 7 today to replace my iPad 1st Gen. Happy to be making all my phones and tablets Android-based.
However, I'm encountering a very strange issue with my power button. It seems to work as a hard reset ONLY, and not as a select button for any reason. I can not use it to turn off screen in Android, nor can I use it to select Yes in the Unlock Bootloader screen. However, if I hold it down for 5+ seconds, it does hard reset the device.
I'd really like to keep this and not have to go through the hassle of exchanging it back to GameStop tomorrow. Anyone have any advice or heard of this issue before? I couldn't find any precedent on XDA or through Google, and I figured y'all would know if anyone would

Lmao it is odd because if it works for hard reboot, then the button isn't broken but it can't logicly be right if it doesn't work in fastboot/bootloader :/ Go exchange it I guess
I think u should return it to get new one....
Couldn't make it work, I did return it and the new one is working as planned. Thanks for the help, folks! Really enjoying this one with an actual working power button
Hey
I had my Nexus 4 for a while now and today suddenly I have a problem with my touchscreen. It suddenly happend, it didn't fall or nothing.
So, the problem: there is a part of the screen that doesn't function properly. It's at a certain y value or height. It noticed this today when I wanted to swipe down the notification bar. Half the time it flips back up or doesn't do anything at all, sometimes it does work. If I swipe "fast" before that height, it usually works.
I downloaded an app to test the touchscreen and at that height it registers 2 or more fingers or it snaps above or under that line.
Can I fix this or do I need to bring it back for warranty? Is this a software or hardware issue? I also did a reset, but that didn't help...
I uploaded some videos to illustrate (can't post links so insert this in the youtube links please):
1. The problem: /watch?v=kNLbSU0smcw
2. Test: /watch?v=B8ERuBtYeBA
Edit: When I hold the phone horizontally, the notification bar works perfectly.
Many thanks,
Aaron
Update: from yesterday until now the screen was even worse, like I was touching it with 100 fingers, it went totally crazy...
A few hours later it works perfectly normal again
Any ideas?
Ok, I still have this problem...
However, the problem is present and I switch a few time to the lockscreen and back, it's fixed most the time. So I think this must be a software issue.
Maybe undoing a few updates might help? What's the best way to do that?
Are you on a Custom ROM / Kernel? If so, go back to stock ROM and Kernel and see if the problem still exists.
No, never used other roms, kernels or rooted..

I have the exact same issue.. Did you manage to solve it?
Nope, but sometimes I can use it like a week with no problem and sometimes I have it everyday.
At first I thought it might be because of the low temperature in my bedroom, but I tested it and I don't think that's the reason. I removed the cover I bought too, but I need to use it a bit longer to be sure it doesn't happen without cover. After that I'll put on the cover again and check again.
Is it possible that it happens when it is charging? Mine does this when it is charging.
No, as far as I know it's not affected by charging. The first time I had this problem I just picked it up from my desk..
I had touch screen issues as well, less than one month after getting the phone.
Occasionally, after pressing the power button to power up the display, the touch screen would not be responsive. I need to turn off/turn on the display again for it to work. It finally conked out one day when the entire part used for soft keys doesn't work anymore. Just an instant before this happened the touch screen started acting crazy for a few seconds.
Had the touch screen and LCD replaced under warranty.
The problem now is there's a bright white blob in the upper right corner of the LCD, and the proximity sensor sometimes doesn't work, resulting in no display when making or receiving a call.

I have the same problem. I am using an other USB adapter for loading. And while the N4 is charging the screen responds like crazy. It often detects two fingers instead of one... And using the keyboard is impossible... If I use the original USB adapter it works with no problems...

Yeah, turning the display on/off a few times (so lock/unlock) helps sometimes. The warranty is a bit of a problem here, I bought it in Germany (MediaMarkt), but I live in Belgium. I tried registering at the LG site (Belgian version), but no option to select a Nexus 4 there for support... I did a live chat at the LG site, explained my problem and the helpdesk guy just left the chat I tried to contact them using Twitter, but they never replied. I asked MediaMarkt and they said I'd have to bring it in the a German MediaMarkt... It's a long way to Germany, so I'd rather not do that unless I can't solve it and they reject the warranty in Belgium (although they are obliged to).
I'm also worried that I'd get an even worse phone, like the problems you have with your new phone :s

Ok..I have a RaZr and this happened to me too. One fine day. Playing a game. In the middle of nowhere. I was scared. S*it scared. So what did i do?
I just did a soft reboot. Pressing the right combination of keys and the phone reboots.
Also, here is a very long drawn attempt, but can u try doing a wipe data/dalvik/cache?
Go into stock recovery and do the rest.
It may help, it may not help.
WARNING: YOU WILL LOSE ALL DATA while doing this.
And oh: I am sorry but I think this is a hardware issue. I may be wrong.
I had the same issue with my EVO LTE. It would go away and come back just like yours. It wasn't a software problem , so I sent it in under warranty and they're fixing it free of charge.

I cracked my Nexus 7 screen on the left side and that cracked side no longer accepts touch input. Three letters of my password are on that side and I had orientation locked to landscape mode in my previous use before I cracked it. If I could somehow get to portrait mode I would be able to input my password and use the device with the only limit being my having to flip the device around all of the time when I need to touch the screen in that area.
Anyway of resetting the password or reorientating it from the lock screen? I won't have the money to fix it for about a month and a half and I don't want to factory reset and lose all my data.
I searched for ways to reset password and found nothing useful besides factory reset. I also searched for things I might be able to do by hooking it up to a PC via USB but not one search item turned up was even closely relevant no matther how I phrased it.
Thanks.

I've definitly thought of that I won't have any money until next month sometime.
There is a thread on xda that tells how to remove the lock, and it works. Do a search.

boot to recovery and make nandroid backup (if you don't make one yet) then factory reset. You can restore backup later on, easy as pie.
Fix with broken screen and lock
Hey guys,
This will not work for all broken screens. i had the pattern lock and broke 3/4 the screen was not responsive to touch. i was able to use google play store > manage devices. Then change password. this changed it from pattern to a password field. i was able to set a new password that was accessible in the small section of screen that worked.
I was then able to flip the screen in any direction to access what i needed including the usb debug so i could use OTG and get a mouse to control the whole thing. also i was able to get the Bluetooth connection going and control it over my computer and do anything i needed.
Hope this helps someone.
My Friend's N4 has developed a strange problem. The Soft buttons (Home, Back & Recent Apps) are not working when the phone is held in portrait orientation. However, they do work in landscape orientation.
He tested the touch screen with a multi touch tester app and found that there is no touch response at the lower portion of the screen exactly in that area that would get occupied by the soft button bar in portrait mode.
The phone is all stock. Non-rooted and bootloader is locked.
Anyone faced such an issue? Please help!
I have the exact same problem, as many other it seems. If i turn the phone clockwise, so that the back arrow/home/apps buttons are displayed where the signal bar is, the buttons work as ecpected; on the other hand, if i rotate the phone the opposite way, the buttons do not work.
It's curious because, as you can see from the partial screenshot below, the phone is rotated counter clockwise and i have swiped to test google now (you can see the dots near the back arrow). So i guess that means that some touch input is registered after all.
I'd like to make some test with those multitouch apps. Can you suggest one?

hello,
i sent mine for repair since it is still covered by the warranty. anyway, due to my post service ((, it will take some more days until i receive it. will keep you updated if anything has changed (hopefully for the better).
Hello I have the same problem!!
I have already did a full wipe and installed CM 11 and Paranoid Android but still facing the same issue!!! Any ideas?
Sounds like you have a hardware problem, you'll need to buy and replace the screen and digitizer assembly.

A few days ago my knock on broke. I've changed Rome, kernels, and restored a stock backup to see if any of that was the problem and it still won't work. Then I noticed that a line of my my screen is not registering touches. If I swipe across the area it registers, just not to touch. I have a feeling that with a portion of the screen dead it is affecting the knock on feature. Can anyone attest to this or does anyone know what my next course of action might be to get knock on back. I have included a picture of lcd screen test to show which portion of the screen is not registering touch. Thanks in advance!

In having the same issue on my Sprint G2. Only just bought this device 3 days ago and knockon with the screen off stopped working. It works with the screen on in every launcher, but turn the screen off and nothing.
I'm thinking factory reset but I came here first because it still works with the screen on.
Oh yeah, what app ate you using to see the dead zones?
From my Sprint Spark LG G2...!
Defective sensor is causing the problem. Only option is to get a replacement.

Sometimes my G2 does not recognize knock on, when I tap on the screen too fast… but this is not related to any particular area of the screen.

The app is called lcd test or lcd screen test. Just an update. The dead zone is gone now and knock on works again. It is more than likely a hardware issue with digitizer and will probably come back, but for now I am getting my knock on.

Mine is doing this and seems to be same zone. How I figured this out was by quick memo and drawing lines to figure out which spot does not registered. Now I'm just waiting on my replacement. Did anyone fix this issue?
I guess I'll be sending my phone to lg..
Posting from my LG G2 while driving an Evo IX.
As a temporary work around for the dead zone, I recommend installing the one handed xposed app (http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/modules/mod-one-handed-mode-devices-t2735815) and toggling it to shift the screen down by 100 pixels. This allows you to move necessary buttons (such as the install button in google play) out of the dead zone temporarily.
I've sent my phone back to lg to have this corrected. Seems a little silly that I have to work around a dead spot on a new phone with less than two months of usage.

Exactly same issue here on my vs980 with dead spot in exactly same place. Weird...

Okay folks. Knock-off works, but Knock-on doesn't.
Turn off the setting in the gestures menu. Reboot your phone. Turn on setting. Power button lock your phone.
Now tap screen firmly for one second then tap firmly again. (No quick tapping like you're trying to turn the screen off)
Say this out loud. (1.- 2.)
One dot, two dot.
The first touch has to be firm and for a solid 1 second.

Well it still doesn't work. Regrettably...
I have this same problem on mine now....
I wish we could figure out what is causing these issues....Has anyone flashed TOT back to stock ZVC to see if it takes care of the issue?
EDIT:
Fix For Me:
Since Sprint doesn't have the update touchscreen driver,
Goto: Device Test-->Individual Item-->Touch Draw Test - Auto
Draw the outline as close as you can (notice the touch screen works everywhere!) then press your power button.
It will ask you PASS FAIL - SELECT PASS! (trying again if only Fail - but it worked on fail too for me)
NEXT:
5689#*980# (From Dialer)
Goto: Device Test-->Individual Item-->Touch Draw Test - Manual
Draw the outline as close as you can (notice the touch screen works everywhere!) then press your power button.
It will ask you PASS RETRY FAIL - SELECT PASS!
Exit, your touchscreen should be responding now that was previously dead.
This worked on my Sprint G2!! First time the dead zone (btw, it's always the same region at upper half of the screen, compared to other people's screenshots) happened, I thought it was the running out storage space, because after I transferred some of the photos out, it worked again. This morning, same thing happened and I moved all my photos out, leaving 3Gb free space, but did not recover. Tried the update touch firmware method, not working, but this one worked (my Touch draw test auto actually failed), but still after the manual draw test and reboot, it worked.

Sadly, it kept happening to me and eventually the method I used stopped working. I sent the phone since it was under warranty to LG. They replaced screen and digitizer. Took care of issue permanently. Sorry for bad news, but it will prob get worse till you have to replace too. ?
