Is it possible to reassign the dock's shortcut keys to some other functions? Personally, I never use the AutoBrightness, Screenshot and Media keys - I'd love to be able to assign specific apps to each one - as shortcuts to Gmail or whatever else.
I tried using a key stroke logger but when the special keys are pressed I didn't get a key code. Not sure if there's an easy way. You might want to search the Apps and Themes subforum for assigning keys (I think it's in there somewhere)

I want to assign more hardware buttons to start apps and perform functions such as 'start' and 'ok' without losing the default set of buttons.
So I want all the buttons you get as default on my xda mini s plus I want to be able select the 'start' button and 'ok' from hardware buttons - like you can when the sliding keyboard is open.
I also want to hardware start tasks, notes etc.
I don't want to use smartskey as doesn't this change the volume slider to page-up/page-down?
There seems to be a couple of apps out there that can enable this e.g. vito button mapper though was wondering if anyone could recommend something inc freeware if poss.
Cheers.
You can edit the smartskey.ini to disable the volume slider and just use the press and hold features of the softkeys. I can't understand why you would want to though. By default smartskey allows the volume slider to function as a volume control in the phone app and in the today screen.
ah ha - I didn't know that.
smart key it is for me then, thanks very much.
Smartskey is the best app on my wizard. You will love it and wonder how you managed without it within the day.
Thanks go to Water, the author.
I know the G2 has the three hardware keyboard shortcuts, I was wondering if theres any way to make one of the(specifically the left one) another 'alt' button... seems like they put the alt button in a weird spot(to me at least, compared to older phones), and the shortcut button is always getting pressed instead of the alt button.
I looked through the menus to set the shortcut, but no 'alt' button there.. Any help would be appreciated.
Running eViL's MT4G rom, if that matters.
I don't think so. I would love to have this as well, though.
I don't like how there are configurable keys, but they can only be configured to launch apps. I would rather them be the [, ], or < key because I use those in some of my account passwords.
There is a way to remap the keyboard, so I would think would be a rather simple remap. You'll need to be rooted and all that. Check on the development subforum, it's there somewhere.
I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to assign actions to the long pressing the soft keys on the Fascinate? For example, when you hold down the home soft key it brings up your most recently used apps. Is there a way to make the other three keys do something like open a specified app? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
There are apps that let you assign different actions to the Search Key, not sure about the others. One of them is LaunchKey I believe.
On my Evo LTE running CM10 the recent apps button on short press opens settings and long press opens recent apps. I like this function vs having to have a shortcut on the desktop or getting to it from notifications. On most newer phones/tablets running ICS/JB there are mods that remap this function but I've not seen this anywhere for the Nexus. I"m running stock but rooted and would prefer to stay that way if i can. Does anyone either know how to do it or if there's a mod floating around that i was unable to find using "search"?
I would also love to customize what app is opened when sliding up from the soft keys, if that's related.

No that's not exactly what i'm talking about but i would like to do that as well. If i understand correctly if you hold any of the software key/button (IE back, home, or recent apps) and slide your finger up there is a dotted circle with google search button at the top. If i could place the settings app there that would get me by. As for now when i hit the recent apps button i would prefer that to be the settings button or being able to long press the button to open settings. I think what i want is a limitation of the launcher but who knows. Anyone who does have any idea how to do this please let me know. I did attempt to edit the keys file in system/usr/keylayout by trying to add an extra key for settings but it didn't work.
Hallo, the new Recent Apps button is annoying me. So i tried to rebind the button to menu. This worked. I changed the /system/usr/keylayout/Generic.kl. (Swapped key 254 (APP_SWITCH) and key 127 (MENU). But I don't know how to rebind the APP-SWITCH key to the hold home key, wich brings me to Google Now. Google Now would be nice on hold MENU, but if I hold the changed button S Finder appears.. I don't need it. So could you tell me, how to bind APP-SWITCH to hold HOME, and Google Now to hold MENU please?
The change I made was inspired by this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2337229
Thanks, Colin P
You can use the xposed framwork additions module to remap hardware keys. Or any number of other Play store apps will also endeavor to do so for you.
Or you could directly edit the the /system/usr/keylayout files. As you aren't already doing this though, I can only presume that you aren't familiar with the syntax. In which case, xposed will be your best option.

I have a question that involves keylayout, since this is a similar thread, I thought I should ask here. I've added on-screen navigation buttons, and want to disable the soft touch keys (I accidentally press them a lot...). I found out through a Note 2 forum that I need to put a # sign in front of keys 158 and 139, but I think it might be different for Galaxy S5. Can someone help me disable the two soft touch keys (back and recent apps keys). Thanks a lot
You should start your own thread, rather than hijack an existing one.
In short, you can either use an app like Xposed to reassign the keys or edit the keylayout files directly. Simply leave the keys in question unassigned. If you find that the keys still light up, that can be disabled in the Settings menu with the touch key duration setting = always off.
