hi there, i recently bought my first android, a nexus 7 and before i started to mess with it, i noticed something cool that i been missing a lot on apple devices: when i clicked small buttons or links in the browser, it zoomed that area so it was easier to choose. SUPER COOL i thought..
ofcourse later i had to root it, change rom to PA, and all the stuff a new android newbie has to, and i didn't really see this little feature anymore, is it something i have to install again, did i loose it when changing from stock rom > PA rom? don't even know what this "feature" is called
any help appreciated

I can't get it to work all the time, but it seems to happen most often on dropdown menu links or where there's a lot of small links close together (like page number links in a long thread on XDA.) I'm still not 100% sure what activates it, but I just loaded this subforum on my Nexus 7 and touched the lag thread title/page number links and it popped up magnified. Same thing for the "Quick Links" dropdown menu at the top of the page. I clicked the menu, then tried to click "Social Groups" and the section of the list I was on became magnified. I think it only happens when there's a certain text density on the screen, because when I zoom in I eventually stop getting the magnification box, but at that point it's really easy to click individual links.

Does Paranoid android use Chrome? It probably doesn't. That very useful feature is a google chrome thing. Here is the Play Store link https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.android.chrome&hl=en
And if at any time android ask's you which browser to open, tap on chrome and tap on "Remember" or something like that.
as there is no other browser on stock on nexus 7 i assume you have been using chrome before. and this feature pops up most likely when you are not zoomed in and navigate through a site where diffrent links are very close together. just to avoid clicking the wrong link of course.
as McMichael96 said, you can just install chrome afterwards when using 4.0+ on your nexus which is quite common obviously haha.
maybe you should also check out the other browsers which are available in the market which also have their unique advantages compared to e.g. chrome.
for once there is Opera Mobile, which renders the text on pages when you zoom in to match the screen width which makes it very easy read without scrolling sideways.
for chrome, the major advantage is, if you are using chrome on other devices as well, that everything is synced.
if using e.g. opera on other devices, syncing is available as well.
there are even more browsers like firefox (which i don't like much) even though favourites and bookmarks are accessable quite nice, dolphin browser which is very popular and have a sleek userinterface, or more.
consider to give them a try... happy to hear your feedback after trying out. cheers.

If I try to search anything on Google Images, all I get is a blank page.
In single column view, I get everything except the pictures i.e. search field, page numbers, other little graphics etc.
In default view, I get a total blank page.
In desktop view I get a blank page again but I also a horizontal scrollbar with it.
The odd thing is that if I view the source of the results page, it's all there, it just doesn't load at all. I have checked by installing Opera and Google Images displays fine but I don't want to keep Opera.
Any ideas on what's causing this?
Thanks
Anyone have any ideas?
Sounds obvious but you have got PIE set to display images haven't you (Menu-View-Show Pictures).
Sorry if that sounds patronising but it usually is fogetting the obvious
Sounds to me like PIE is a bit screwed, either that or your registry settings are a bit fubared...
Personally I like to use both Opera and PIE, because PIE can load SWFs (provided you've installed the PPC Flash Player 7 cab, of course) so I can get my Weebl and Bob fix, but Opera is just so much better at rendering pages, and its download manager is far superior... And it feels less clunky... And it can do FTP... and... well, just use both side by side for a while and you'll realise it's not a bad investment
Weebl and bob on the phone, what a fantastic idea. <off to load Flash 7>
apologies for my previous post, when I wrote it my phone connection wasn't working so I couldn't try it out. I also am experiencing exactly the same problem as described. Would say it's most likely down to PIE not being able to interpret the script used by the Google Images page.
Yeah, i agree!

But why on some devices and not others? I used to be able to browse perfectly on my JAM.
Anyway, I wanted to avoid a reset but it looks like the only way it might fix whatever's gone wrong.

hi, since I've been using honeycomb in my A500 and got to used the Xoom and Galaxy tab I noted that I can only have 5 apps on the multi-task buttom.
Is there a way that i can increase the number of apps on the multitasking buttom like Xoom and Glaxy Tab??
3.1 includes an update to show your last 18 apps in place of the 5 currently in 3.0
As far as I know, that button only shows recently opened apps, not running apps... but I too am looking forward to being able to see more.
To be honest, the whole multitasking concept on Android is an utter mess; I can never know if the application I just used is still running in the background or not unless the application itself places an icon in the systray, and there is no quick, logical way of seeing all running applications and switching between them. If you want to see all the running ones you have to jump through several hoops, and the recently opened - list doesn't indicate which ones are still running and which ones aren't.
I really hate it.

Bump. Needs a built in logical easy to use task manager that clearly shows what is running and offers options to close/disable said app.
Not really the way android works, I find keeping a copy of atk around on my rooted device helps a lot - remove the crap that you don't use, keep an eye on running tasks and free ram.
It would be nice if they would put in a little icon to indicate which apps are open in the recent app menu, maybe even on the app icons themselves on the home screen or whatever. I don't think it'd be that hard to implement.

Even something as simple as a small green sphere -- with 1px or 2px black edge around it for clarity -- next to the running applications' icons would already help. You'd still have to jump through hoops to shut them down though if they don't offer such a menu option themselves.
All in all, Android is terribly confusing and definitely isn't all that end-user-friendly. Like for example, there is no kind of help menu in any of the built-in apps, only a select few 3rd party apps offer such, meaning that it's tough for a Jane the Newcomer to figure out what's what. Then the aforementioned multitasking mess. Not to mention the fact that Android Market is a total mess itself too; Google doesn't have any kind of a validation system in place so there's all kinds of scam apps and crapware there, and apps are not even always in the correct category either. Inconsistency on controls is also a hindrance as I think Google should create very specific guidelines for basic UI management and controls. And don't get me started on topics about how things are under the hood..

Turn the tablet to the portrait orientation and you will see 7 apps.

that's what i thought. Google have some big mess in all their android devices.
I didn't knew if it was right to call the recently open item a multitasking because it was somehow confusing and I think I read in the android developer page for honeycomb explains that as multitasking.
I hate the store in Puerto Rico, I'm using market enabler to get some apps because I can't see a full market and even download some apps for country limitations. I don't even have the Tablet section
ok, so few days ago I updated my note to official samsung ota jb release. After updating I did not see much improvement, apps open/close faster, not sure if they actually do or is it just faster animation then there is some blocking mode in the settings which is like a new feature, also virtual keyboard is easier to move around the screen, so this is the good stuff, now the bad.
I have haptic feedback off or I HAD, now everytime time I move icons tablet vibrates, also when shutting down. How do I completely swith it off? also notifications, I have spen detection swithed off, now everytime I remove spen the ugly notification appears informing me i just removed spen and stays in the notifications menu... unnesesary and a waste of screen space?
The notification menu is a mess now, it can now scroll up and down
also when shutting down ugly message appears telling me the tablet is shuting down
also had to download from internet and install additional keyboard language, when previously just had to set it in options and that was all
is it possible to bring back the old look and feel while keeping the new features(the butter thingy and a new keyboard)?

No. And a lot of the changes you're referencing are between Android 4.0.4 and 4.1 and have nothing to do with Samsung's implementation of JB. Some features are changed in the OS, Samsung's apps (EG: S Note, the Gallery), and the behavior of some functions, settings, and apps are different too. ICS to JB on the Note was a big overhaul so I wouldn't expect another one during the Note's lifespan; future changes are likely to be simple tweaks. So things that are gone are gone and things we have aren't likely to change significantly. If you want ICS back search on "Odin" and follow the instructions.
Cant I do a factory reset? or my original firmware is no more?

When you update the new s/w becomes your recovery so if you reset it'll still be JB. You can download the ICS version for your region from Samsung-Updates or Samfirmware and install it via Odin.
Reads as a bad update to me unless JB is a special firmware for you .
Wipe phone and as said flash stock rom .
Or contact Samsung service centre .

Its not that a tablet is unusable, everything works fine, its because with ics it was all nice and tidy and now with jb its annoying with its excesive notifications. To me it feels a bit like a step back.

Do what I did, buy an extra pen and a case that will hold it. Make sure that power saving for pen is disabled,
Use the new pen and leave the old on in it's slot. Since you don't remove it, then it doesn't notify, but all works with the new one
Ive got the case already, but the extra pen idea is sweet, also because the original pen while works well feels a bit cheap and plastic(also too small and too thin and has no eraser).
What pen did you buy?
I have noticed much of a change myself
ok so another thing I just noticed, when opening youtube links in opera (my current browser, also useragent set to desktop) youtube app launches and it tries to display the vid and in case with several music vids Ive just tried it gives me a message saying that user has not made this vid available for mobile users or smth like that. now wtf is this bullcrap? this has never happened while i was on ics and also the same vids used to work both in the browser and in youtube app. now I am seriously considering a downgrade
Ive disabled youtube app and now when opening a link I get a message that no application is available to open it (and then opera still opens it). I guess I need to change file association thing (which app opens which files so basicly disable youtube app opening links) does anyone know how to do that?
edit: also youtube playback stops when switching to other tab
So I have decided to downgrade, now just have to find original firmware and Iam set.

Wow, some people are never happy, and just need to complain. What about all the other good things, like better multi screen implementation, more apps for multi screen.
Seriously, all those thiings you described are just petty..."also when shutting down ugly message appears telling me the tablet is shuting down:eek".....I really feel for you...must be awful! Come on man, hardly worth getting your knickers in a twist about is it.

You need to "Clear defaults" in each app that you want Android to forget the associations you set.

A couple of people have voiced issues with some of the changes in JB. I share your view; so much is improved that some of Samsung's changes to apps and functions are really minor in comparison. But, look at it this way, some people won't touch a device with an overlay while others swear by them. Different strokes.
You misunderstand, I like updates and I like new things, what I dont like is when features are removed, when I am forced to you use apps which I dont want to use or which dont work (youtube example, alot of music vids are restricted in the app while working perfectly in the browser, haptic feedback, I have it switched off yet the tablet still vibrates when shutting down or when the icons are being rearanged, ok fine but why there isnt a festure to COMPLETELY disable haptic feedback), when completely useless things are added (stupid and more importantly unnecesary notifications eg shutting down, spen removed...)
so yeah bring new and updated firmware not a steaming pile of crap
btw the "clear default" method doesnt work

You realize that a large portion of the forum has been on JB since November. There have been very few issues and pages of threads discussing the benefits of the new features. If what you're reporting as problems were affecting a lot of people there would have been more posts about them. Frankly, I don't really understand what most of your problems are based on the way you described them. I haven't had any YouTube issues since updating to JB in November and don't remember seeing any reported. So in describing the update as a "streaming pile of crap" you're kind of on your on in feeling that way.

It clears app association so it does "work." If it doesn't fix your problem that's another thing. You might want to try a hard reset and start from scratch.
I thought the same thing

I hated jellybean on my galaxy tab 2 7.0. But they did a awesome job of tweaking it for Note 10.1. I get serious battery life. Barely notice jellybean being on it. This tablet is fast and smooth. I love premium suite. I would wipe partition and user data and start again.
s pen
Go into settings and down to s pen, in that menu is an option that says something like change what option when s pen is removed... change it to "nothing"
ps I happen to freaking LOVE this jb update!! It's so great night fast...!
[Rooting]
I regret not rooting right away. I don't want a custom rom because I hate wiping, but I do want root access. What's the easiest way to back everything up and restore after root for a minimum of headache?
[Memory Management]
I gave my iPad to a family member because I wanted to keep the Nexus 10, and I used both with the browser open and on "reader" mode often. For some reason it seems to me the iPad kept my current page in memory for much longer. I often read long pages of lots of text so it's annoying to open firefox or dolphin again and have the tablet re-load my page and start me at the top again. This usually doesn't happen if I've only gone and used 1 or 2 other apps, usually it opens to the middle of the page where I had it before, but if I do too many other apps when I switch back to my browser it has to reload my page. Am I correct in assuming this is a memory management problem? Best fix? (and I'm assuming it'll be easier to fix with root?)
[Launchers]
I love the features of Apex/Nova launchers, but both of them are resizing my icons to a standard size. This is most obvious with the "KickassTorrents" app icon, but since not everyone will have that, go look at the Pulse app icon in both vanilla launcher, as compared to Apex or Nova. You will notice the default launcher leaves a ring of transparent space around the icon, whereas Nova/Apex seem to ignore the transparent space and stretch the icon to fill up the whole of a grid box. Of course on such a high ppi screen that looks awful. Any known fix?

You can use adb backup for it. There is already out this great guide ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1420351) , so you can follow it . Any questions just post here.

I usually don't mind it, but you may want to find a browser that saves the page (offline mode) or install an app like Advanced Task Killer (I usually don't recommend, but in your case I think it may do the job) and then change the settings to don't kill your browser . Good luck with this!! If I find more info I'll give to you.

Maybe you can find something in settings, I use NOVA in my Xoom and S4, however in Nexus 10 I still didn't configure enough to be good for me, so I'm still stick with the normal launcher. AFAIK there are settings in NOVA to change the icon size, I edited mine on Xoom and looked really good, I'll find it and send a new reply for you later.
Hope this covers up enough for you .

Hi Guy's. I've been running CM/LineageOs on my phones since forever, so I'm not really familiar about the default behaviours of stock android, and there's something that is bothering me on my G5 that I'm not sure is related to the system itself or to some sort of settings, and would be really thankful if someone could help me out.
Basically, in LineageOS 14.1 when you follow a link sent by someone, the link will open as a new tab on your default browser (be it the AOSP or Chrome, or any browser you choose to be your default). That's been the standard behaviour in all versions of CM till this day (I've been using it since CM7) as far as I know.
However, on my G5Plus, still running stock android due to warranty, everytime I follow a link or click my weather widget, instead of opening a normal tab on my default browser, I'll get this small rectangle that loads the page, but has no controls like the default browser, which is quite annoying in my opinion as I could want or need to save this page as a favourite, print it or do whatever I feel like with it, and this Webview rectangle won't allow me to do any of that. I'm not sure I've made myself clear, so I'm adding a picture of what happens to illustrate it. In the picture, I'm following a link sent to me by a contact through a IM application.
If someone nows what I could do to make sure all links open as a new tab on the default browser, I would really appreciate the help. Sorry for the noob question, but on my (now dead) Galaxy S4 running LOS14.1 and on my Nexus 7 running stock MM, this doesn't happen.
I think this is some third party browser app which you have set as default.

Not really. I only have Chrome installed (it came pre-installed on my XT1683).
This has nothing to do with webview or chrome. You Mist have a third party App installed
Actually I've just found out what was the matter. For some reason, Setup Wizard (a system application) was acting like a browser. This is a common problem with other devices running Nougat as I just found out (Samsung Galaxy S6, S7, S8, Nexus 5x, and many others). I've found the solution on a Google Pixel forum, and what needs to be done is to disable setup wizard. As my phone was just taken out of the box, and the only third party app installed was WhatsApp I'm pretty sure this bug is within the system.
