In ubuntu do you just format
the card as FAT?

So many users are having issues with sod screen freezes WiFi not working correctly and so on. The problem is the card has more than just apps on the ext extension on the card. Every one says to format the card with Windows which is fine. But one problem persists Windows can't see the ext extension which is a Linux format. And reminents of the build file system are on that too. Remember not all builds play nice with each other. So the best way to format the SD would be with a Linux disto like ubuntu so you can format the fat and ext extensions and voila all you're problems go away. You can do this with a live cd version from WWW.ubuntu.com so no need to install ubuntu just run the live cd without installing.

Could you explain a little about what this does and how and why it is better to format with linux first? Thanks!
Or you could use Paragon Partition Manager.
I've had no SOD's, screen freezes, etc.

Yes I guess I should have asked what is the
"ext extension". Could not find anything on google except a file extension used by Norton, and I know that is not what you mean.
Also you say
"you can format the fat and ext extensions". Does that mean that in ubunto I do more than just format with FAT. I should do another step for the extensions? Sorry I don't know much about linux.

On your Hd 2 when you loaded Android for the first time it made a data store and a ext. Extension partition http://www.linux.org/docs/ldp/howto/Filesystems-HOWTO-6.html

well i have a 16gb with 3.3gb left so this process is gonna take me a while. is there some kind of alternate way to do this. or certain files to look for.
And so a regular windows **** format will not clean out

The ext extension. You need to do this with linux. Do I format with FAT only in ubunto or also one of the other format options? Thanks!
I downloaded and burned ubunto to a cd. Loaded it and formated the SD with FAT. I then re-booted windows and formated with regular windows format. I am now coping my backup to the SD. Were these the correct steps?
If you have a Mac I used Disk Utility and formatted it (FAT) Then I went to partition and did 1 Partition. When I just formatted I couldnt boot android thats why I partitioned

This thread is one giant collection of bull****
There is no "ext extension" unknown to windows, what you'll probably mean is a linux swap partition which isn't created on the sd card itself, it creates a virtual filesystem in a file.
There is only one correct way to optimally format your sd card, and that is in one partition with the FAT32 filesystem. How you accomplish this is up to yourself, any tool/OS is perfectly capable of doing that.
Please stop misinforming people!

Now that shows your stupidity Linux swap is a swap file partition made by Linux which isn't visible on Windows either so stop trolling because apparently you don't know what your talking about go ahead fire up Windows and see if you can see the extensions partitions you won't then fire up Linux and there they are and yes I use Windows and Linux and MAC if you don't believe this ask any Dev on here and tell set you straight probably wouldn't answer you anyway since you don't know ****.

hey peeps
just bought a 32gb sd card for my hero and began transferring files.
the idiot that i am i accidently disconnected thinking it had finished transferring and the sd card became unreadable
i reformatted it in windows 7 disk management and it only shows as a 8mb partition.
i tried deleting the partition but it wont let me. i have also tried windows xp disk management and also partition manager pro but it freezes and crashes
i loaded the windows xp setup disk and managed to delete the partition but still shows as a 8mb disk
im ripping my hair out as it was such a stupid mistake
any ideas on how to fix this would be greatly apreciated
thanks
sy
Will it let you resize the 8mb partition?
Sadly not. In the windows xp setup it shows as a 8mb device even though I managed to delete the partition

Use the following code in recovery mode to inform you on any parts that mite all ready be on the card,
Code:
adb shell
parted /dev/block/mmcblk0

Nope. Gparted wouldn't even see it. I ended up getting a refund from eBay. Oh well.
sounds like a problem i had when i formatted my pen drive with my mac. It would show on windows as a 16 mb partition. I dont know if this will help but try this and see if its the same issue. http://pitumbo.com/how-delete-gpt-partition-or-efi-mac-hard-disks-vista-or-xp

Does Amon RA recovery partition work with it?
easiest way is that you should go in the recovery mod and partition ur sd card gives swap and EXt values 0 and start partition your actual size of Sd card will come back again cheeerssssss
I was using my phone as usual pandora, browsing, etc. I was connected to computer via usb and usb storage was on. I disconnected without turning off usb storage and immediately realized my mistake. android tripped out kept restarting and would barely make it past cyanogen splash before restarting again untill I pulled the battery. now that card will not boot haret loads but gets stuck on black screen with linux penguin. not just the build I disconnected usb from any build on sd is a no go.
so I backed up all my files on the sd card reformatted the card and restored files. still no go. now the same hyperdroid 1.6 folder I had on 16g card (first) is booting fine on another 8g sd card?
how can I restore my 16g? it functions fine in any other way. even backtrack 4 installation is booting when using as usb hdd(my phone is the micro usb adapter)
before Im grilled I did search however I may not have used correct keywords.

You may try deleting your data image and giving it a fresh one with a complete load. If you use titanium backup from market you can restore all your apps.
There may be something in the data.img that wont allow you to boot.
I could be way off but its worth a try. Best of luck.

I had something similar happen when I ran out of power while rebooting. Formatting in windows didn't fix it. Formatting using the SD formatter couldn't complete. Eventually, I did a wipe disk using another program. Then used SD formatter and it worked. Hope that helps.
I tried your method however I cannot for the life of me figure out titanium backup. I created an update.zip using program however I cannot get build into recovery mode also I cannot find even a hint of how to restore the backup I made in the program or using google.

If you can get into CWM try using the reset permissions option, then re-format and re-partition the card. Might help.

Any one can HELP please ?
try to format full not quick .use sdformatter (i face the same problem but it fixed )
Delete/recreate the partition (windows with card reader) then full format.
Best for me is to do under linux (I use a "live cd", a linux distri you boot on CD with no install), I repair a 1To HDD crashed by my "popcorn". Very powerfull!
The subject is old, anyway I had the same issue with my HTC HD2, using a sandisk mobile ultra 8GB. I tried to format with windows, winmo 6.5 format tool, panasonic format tool, normal windows xp format, quick format, the only tool that worked for me was the HP USB disk formater 2.18.
Hi, I'm having problem to flash my HTC HD2 back to android after flashing my HD2 to Windows Phone. The error that I'm having right now is to unable to mount SD Card. Everytime i've tried to mount /SDcard, an error Unable to mount /sdcard occured.
I've tried so many options but still no avail. Tried to use adb shell command but still unable to mount. So, I've tried to run android using SD Card, my phone stuck at port-a-droid screen and keep rebooting. At first, I though it was the SD card but when I tried on my friends HD2, the SD Android can boot and no problem.
I can't think what is the main problem as when I've load back to WP7, my sdcard can be detected and use as a storage and even in Magldr.
Hope someone could shed some light to my problem as i really love this phone.

Ok, follow these steps and you should be fine:
1. Flash task29 by placing task29.nbh onto root of SD card and holding volume down and power button while phone is OFF
2. Flash magldr or CLk
3. Flash recovery
I highly recommend HD2 Toolkit for this if you are not experienced. just google HD2 Toolkit and you will see the xda thread
Goodluck!

Hi again.
I've tried the step that you suggested using the toolkit but still the same problem.
I'm still unable to boot android from the SD as it keeps reboot after showing the port to droid ultimate screen.
Try to install rom via sdcard still giving me the same can't mount error.
Any other suggestion?
I quit confuse on what reason this is happening as when installing WP7, sdcard can be detected. But when I've flash to Stock Desire HD using DFT (as is the only method that I cn use to install android) my sdcard can be detected by the android os.
It's kinda weird actually...

Hi, thanks for your reply.
Actually I did want to reinstall android from WP7 however when i enter recovery mode and choose install from the zip file, I get can't mount sdcard.
I've been trying a lot of things, format using sd formatter, format to FAT32, swap with another sdcard and even purchase new sdcard also gave me the same error. Even trying to fix using adb also fail or maybe I'm not expert enough to fix using adb. Found a topic in the forum by modifying initrd.rc (if i'm not mistaken) my knowledge is still shallow, so I dare not to try such attempt yet.
Do you think using Clk would solve my problem rather using Magldr? Maybe I should give it a try.
As for the boot android from sd is an effort for me to run android as a temporary solution while trying to figure out NAND installation problem but that method also fail.
I've already format my card using FAT32 (but will try to reformat again later), but copy all the android file into the folder and try to reboot from sdcard. Only got to loading screen of port-a-droid ultimate and then my phone reboot. But when I insert the same sdcard into my friends HD2, it boot into the android without a problem as I'm facing right now.
So I don't know what's the different between his HD2 and mine.
Hopefully someone could help me.

After reading this, and thinking about it for awhile, to eliminate ALL software issues, i would flash stock TMOUS or your carrier's stock Windows Mobile 6.5 ROM and try the sd card there. It almost sounds like youre having a hardware issue. Or wait a minute, what programs did you use to format your SD card? there might be a partition still on it that recovery isnt liking, download mIni tool partition wizard and delete all partitions then create a fat32 partition set as primary. Or use HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool that takes forever but it does an excelent job at erasing completely the contents (master boot records, paritions, data, everything) and restores it to a fresh state. every time i get any sort of external media i use this tool to completely wipe it clean. if problems still persist we may need to move to a google talk chat session or something so i can talk to you as you move through some steps.

Good question lol i have the stock TMOUS ROM, and a custom ROM. The only problem with those is the radio will most likely brick the device.
What carrier do you have? im pretty good at tracking down files on the net. I would start with the carriers website, then go to HTC's website. its 100% out there, just gotta get the blood hounds out and sniff it down i found a 12 year old program (simple .exe file) that would compare two folder directories and output there results to a text file so its definately out there
And i say it might be a hardware issue since you claimed it booted on your friends HD2, thus ruling out a bad SD card, or bad software setup. These devices arent that hard to pull apart, ive had mine a apart more times than i change my underwear xP
So if it is hardware related, prolly a pin thats not connecting 100% (Hopefully) you can easily rip it apart and bend the pin to make contact.
Well the best to ya if you need help finding the stock ROM just post your specs of the carrier and what not and i'll try to help ya. Also if you need anything else you know wher to find me

Thanks again. I will try to find stock rom first. If not, I will post again.
Btw, is it possible for me to pull out (or create an image) of the stock ROM as my brother had a friend that ask me to convert his HD2 to Android. But just to be save, I want to extract the original stock rom first just in case and at the same time i could use it to restore my HD2.
Do you think it is caused by the hware. Because if it is, would it also effecting WP7 rom also. A bit weird as WP7 could access my sdcard without an issue. I don't know as i'm no expert in mobile device.
If my device is bricked either because of the radio or others, is it possible to un-brick it.
Anyway, thanks. Will be posting again soon.
If still couldn't solve, then i will just stick to WP7 and sold the unit instead.

Here are the stock ROMs for the UK, so the ones for your carrier are probably on the HTC website somewhere Try searching through your country's branch of the htc website (i.e. rather than htc.com/uk try your country's code) and you will most probably find the ROM you're looking for. If you're flashing from WinMo you flash HSPL>Radio>MAGLDR/cLK>CWM>ROM (in response to your second post)

I'm reasonably sure you can, as that says it's just a generic software update. Try it out and see if it helps your SD issue and report back
