[Q] 32gb sd card is now a 8mb sd card :( - Hero, G2 Touch General

hey peeps
just bought a 32gb sd card for my hero and began transferring files.
the idiot that i am i accidently disconnected thinking it had finished transferring and the sd card became unreadable
i reformatted it in windows 7 disk management and it only shows as a 8mb partition.
i tried deleting the partition but it wont let me. i have also tried windows xp disk management and also partition manager pro but it freezes and crashes
i loaded the windows xp setup disk and managed to delete the partition but still shows as a 8mb disk
im ripping my hair out as it was such a stupid mistake
any ideas on how to fix this would be greatly apreciated
thanks
sy

Will it let you resize the 8mb partition?

Sadly not. In the windows xp setup it shows as a 8mb device even though I managed to delete the partition

Why not use adb ?
See the following link for more help :
http://androidandme.com/2009/08/news/how-to-manually-partition-your-sd-card-for-android-apps2sd/
Use the following code in recovery mode to inform you on any parts that mite all ready be on the card,
Code:
adb shell
parted /dev/block/mmcblk0
print

DL a program called GParted, boot into it and do some low-level formatting. That should do the trick.

Yeah this would be better as more user friendly with a nice gui to use,

I have this same problem. How did you fix it?

I'd say gparted or any other low level formatting tool would work nicely.

Nope. Gparted wouldn't even see it. I ended up getting a refund from eBay. Oh well.

sounds like a problem i had when i formatted my pen drive with my mac. It would show on windows as a 16 mb partition. I dont know if this will help but try this and see if its the same issue. http://pitumbo.com/how-delete-gpt-partition-or-efi-mac-hard-disks-vista-or-xp

probleem resolve
for me was the same problem i just downloaded this program ( SD Formatter v2 0 0 3 ) and resolved the problem.
Soryy for mi poor English.

Does Amon RA recovery partition work with it?

easiest way is that you should go in the recovery mod and partition ur sd card gives swap and EXt values 0 and start partition your actual size of Sd card will come back again cheeerssssss

[Q] fat32 + ext2 = damaged, killed SD card :/

Another thread, i think i'm a totally noOb
Today, i downloaded Wildpuzzle Rom .. and flashed it ... everything went fine
I used this tutorial...
http://baert.ulyssis.be/2010/10/13/wildpuzzle-rom-for-htc-wildfire/
this was okay...but in the 4. point ... "Creating an EXT partition on the SDCard"
there was a problem ... after i selected the fat32 and ext2 size, and the phone rebooted .... i had an error message .... "E:failed to seek in /cache/update.zip" ...
i've tried a lots of time...always rom manager failed to made the right partitions...
so i moved on, and i tried to made the partitions with manually in windows xp
i've downloaded Paragon Partition Manager 9.0 to do the partitioning....
After i had the 2 partition, 1500MB Fat32 and 300MB ext2, the pc rebooted to make the changes .... and then i had an error message (i can't remember, cause it dissapeared quickly).....
when xp started again i saw my sd card is not working .... windows said, "You must format the SD card" .... and it was only 512 kbyte the full size
i tried a lots of applications, which recovery, or fix sd cards, but nothing helped :/
any solution?!
i wouldn't like to throw away my sdcard if its not necesarry
thx.

Try gparted, linux boot cd, make fat32 partition first then make ext3 partition no need for swap on phone

i have tried gparted, in ubuntu live cd, but when i insert the sd card to the reader nothnig happen ... and gparted stop working :S .. its freeze or something like that
Did you try to delete the partition and creating a new drive? Like when you buy a new disc... You have to create a new partition and a new logical drive...
You can use Paragon partition manager...
I guess gparted was loading, it take a little while to read the entire HDD.

No thx, Paragon partition manager killed my SD card ... so i won't use that app again, never...
But meanwhile, i could fix the SD card with Ubuntus's gParted ... i've tried a lots of time ... reinserted the card to the reader .... and finaly it recognised it ... and can made a valid partition ... so the problem solved
anyway, thx the idea
A very simple and quick solution to this kind of problem (for other users / future reference, now that you've solved it): put it in your photo/video camera and format it. This would do a low-level format of the SD card, allowing you to see and use it in Windows. Any camera with this function will do (Nikon, Canon, Panasonic, etc.)

thx a lot dude ... this is a simple and a good idea
never would thought this
Good one!!! It is a very simple solution. However if it works with "camera formating", then the issue with SD card is not too bad. I mean, it's not corrupted in a way to be unusable or "bricked" in some way.
And thus, I think you needn't even bother using some other gadget, just a sufficient knowledge on partitioning tools and you can make it work on your computer. I still believe it could be repaired with Paragon Partition... 've been using that program ever since and never had any problems...
Anyway, the more options avaliable, the more possibilities for a success! ;-)))

SDHC 8Gb SDcard not recognized

Hi there, new to this forum so can't post to development forum although I searched there. I'm running Swiftdroid 1.8 / CM7 by Mur4ik on my GT540 and all works fine. The stock 2Gb SDcard that came with the phone is a bit small for my liking so I got myself a Kingston 8Gb class 4 SDHC. Unfortunately this card does not seem to be recognized by the phone, the following are the symptoms:
1. When inserting card and booting phone, mostly it gets stuck at LG boot screen.
2. Sometimes it does boot but then doesn't mount the SDcard. After boot I get a notification like "unknown filesystem on SDcard" (or similar), and do you want to format the SDcard? Yet if I try to format it using the phone, it doesn't work.
3. Checking with adb shell and "mount" I see that the SDcard is not actually mounted.
4. The card is recognized fine on a computer via USB under both Windows and linux, and I can transfer files.
5. When manually partitioning the SDcard (gparted under Ubuntu) to only contain a 4Gb partition formatted with FAT16, then it works fine and is recognized (remaining 4Gb unused). Unfortunately FAT16 is 4Gb max, so I can't format the whole card in a single FAT16 partition. Also at that size FAT16 is very space wasteful (65k cluster size) so that even a tiny file takes minimum 65k space.
6. However, when formatting this SAME partition (i.e. 4Gb) as FAT32 it is not recognized and I get the same errors as above with the single 8Gb FAT32 partition.
7. I tried reformatting the card with SD Formatter 3.0 from ---www dot sdcard dot org--- but it did not make a difference.
So it does not seem to be the card that's faulty. Has anyone else experience with using FAT32 formatted SDcards on Swiftdroid? From reading the forums this should be no problem and certainly the Linux kernel can recognize FAT32. Also there was a report of someone using a 32Gb SDHC with the GT540 although I'm not sure which firmware (stock or mod).
I haven't tried it with Stock LG 2.1 ROM but am very happy with Swiftdroid so don't want to go back to 2.1 just to get the SDcard working.
Have you formatted it as primary

Don't think the SD card is faulty as I can mount, format and read/write to it via usb on a computer running both Windows and Linux.

What is the "disk parted" software you are referring to? Can't seem to find it. Can you post a link? I've tried gparted, fdisk and cfdisk under Linux, as well as SD formatter 3.0 under Windows.
I have had similar problems after changing card, that I managed to resolved after rebuliding MBR of the card and reformating the card
Use Mini Partition Wizzard (Home Edition), delete existing partitions ,select disk and rebuild MBR, than do the format.
I hope that helps, I worked for me.

Tried this, but it did not make a difference After trying to boot phone with newly formatted SD card, it just gets stuck at LG logo. When re-inserting the original 2Gb SD card it boots up just fine.

OK, so I tried formatting the card with TestDisk (under Ubuntu linux) but again it did not help. Place freshly formatted FAT32 8Gb SDcard into phone, switch on, and it gets stuck at LG boot logo Insert original 2Gb card (FAT16) and it boots just fine....
The 8Gb card seems just fine as I can mount it under Windows and Linux, copy files, read files, etc. all normal.
So I'd be interested to hear about your many "small alternative fixes"
P.S. Also tried Mini Partition Wizard (following ktmt suggestion) under Windows, but did not work either.
SAME thing happened to me what i did is flashes some kdz files in hope to freshen up the phone and it worked for me
I think you will find that for a larger card, you really need at least a class 6 card so that the card doesn't cause a bottle neck. A class 4 card may be too slow for that size card. I have heard of a few people getting rid of any card problems they had by using a faster card.

OK I'll try this, just need to get around to buying a class 6 card. I got similar advice on the Android Forums i.e. class 4 cards for large sizes (8Gb and up) being too slow for this phone.

This did not solve the problem, I think it's just the class 4 card being too slow.
I've similar problem. My brother and i have LG GT540. I've 16GB SD-Card and my brother has a 8 GB SD-Card.
In his phone 8 GB SD-Card doesn't work correctly but in my phone works fine. I didn't know what is damaged, his phone or SD-Card
In brother phone, SD-Card doesn't format correctly and after this process, phone won't mount SD-Card and i get notification that SD-card is empty or damaged ;/
I will trying my 16 GB SD-Card into brother phone.

[PROBLEM] Corrupt SD Card - Plz Help

Hello i have a 16gb Sandisk Class 2 SDHC card
I tried various things. Like in CW recovery i tried to partition the card.
I also tried to move apps this way http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1079256
Nothing works on my card. I plugged in the card to my laptop and sometimes its shown in my computer and sometimes it doesnt.
In minitool it shows as bad disk and sometimes as FAT32.
I am so confused. Is there any way to reset my card the way it came from the factory ?
I tried formatting it tons of times and it isnt formatting correctly.
Maybe it has bad sectors or sth.
Please help me guys

had to me once..!!!
this is what i did!!!
I was using mini tool v5.something( it was showing bad disk for me)
I updated it to v6!!
then i saw my disk in mini tool 6. I then deleted that partition and made ext4 and swap partition and fat32.
Then when i clicked on apply it said "the disk is in use and cannot be formatted, you need to restart your pc. Mini tool will automatically apply the changes"(something like this)
Then i restarted my laptop and minitool started before my windows boot.
And then the sd card was back to normal..!!
try it out..!!
Hope it helps!!

[Q] Problems with dual boot Phiremod/HC update, expanding sd card etc.

Can anyone help me out with updating the dual boot Phiremod/HC install?
My pc is a Windows 7 64-bit and I'm having absolutely no luck expanding the sd card to use the full 8GB.
Windows 7 and Easeus don't see the partitions, and Gparted does, but won't let me expand to include the free space (listed as unallocated).
I finally managed to mount the sd card via ADB, and have copied the phiremod update zip there, but when I try to install it, I get an error (bad) and after a restart, the file has vanished from the partition.
I'm very new at this, but can usually follow detailed instructions.
Here's what I did to update to 6.3:
Insert SD Card into my computer's card reader
Download EASUS Partition Manager (also using W7 64-bit)
Take the SD Card partition (#6 I believe) and extend it using the unallocated space left (mine was about 6Gb left on my 8Gb card)
Run the job in the partition manager
Throw SD Card and boot into Phiremod 6.2
connect to computer via USB and copy the 6.3 update to the SD Card
reboot in recovery, clear cache and dalvik cache (under advanced)
flash the 6.3 update zip
Mine hung at the android... screen for about 10min then I did a hard reboot and it fired up and has been working fine.
I was getting gmail force closes until I wiped cache and dalvik cache so I added that step in before flashing.
Let me know how it goes!
Ummm.... yeah, what he said above.

Thanks for the step by step instructions, but for me the buck stops at trying to extend the partition. Easus only sees the boot partition. Gparted shows all the partitions, but won't extend the sd partition. It looks like it should work (lets me drag the extender thingy), but when I apply the action, it reverts back to the original, with no error message. Just doesn't do it.
Should I start over and reformat the card?
It wouldn't hurt. Only thing you would lose are apps you've installed.
You could always use Titanium Backup for that though.
If you do reformat make sure you do a full format and not a "quick" one so no data is still lingering on the card.
Let us know how it goes!

Ah, do I need a usb micro sd card reader?
I only have a regular size sd card adapter for it.
And no, I didn't unmount the partition. I checked earlier, but there is no such option in the gparted menu, and I don't have much advanced partitioning knowledge.
A google search didn't help much.
Would appreciate if you could tell me how to do this!

It is preferred to use a micro sdcard reader. I assume you are using a Linux box or live CD with gparted. But there should definitely be a n option for you to unmount the partition. You will not be able to make any changes to mounted partitions.
Right click over the partition that you want to work with. It should give you a menu. And unmount should be one of the options.

I'm using a live cd on a Win 7 pc, and there is definitely no unmount option in the right click menu when I boot into gparted. Not even a greyed out one.

Yeah. Then there shouldn't be an issue. :/
It might just be an issue with your card reader.

Thanks again. I'll report back in once I get a usb card reader!

Got a card reader and Easeus and Win 7 Disk Management can now see all the partitions.
No luck expanding the sd partition, though. The action seems to happen, but then everything reverts back to what it was originally.
No mount/unmount option anywhere to be found, not with Easeus, nor with Gparted or Win 7.
I'm out of ideas at this point and will reformat the card and start over.
Edited to add: Aaand I'm now having trouble doing *that*, too.
Tried it on the pc: no go.
Tried it on the Nook: it claimed the card was sucessfully formatted in about 1 sec, and then got stuck on that notice.
Waited 5 minutes, still stuck. Turned it off and back on, and Nook booted into Phiremod.
Any ideas how I can reformat this demon card?
Edited to add: Am now using a low level formatting tool and get "format error occurred at offset ...". The program is still running and seems to be formatting the rest of the card.
Does this sound like the sd card is damaged?
A couple other options for you to try:
SD Formatter 3.0 - Made specifically to format SD cards - http://www.sdcard.org/consumers/formatter_3/
Partition Wizard - This is the software I used to extend the SD Card partition. Really simple to use - http://download.cnet.com/Partition-Wizard-Home-Edition/3000-2094_4-10962200.html?tag=mncol;7
I would try formatting the SD card, reinstalling the dualboot image, the using Partition Wizard to extend the SD card partition.
As far as updating, I haven't tried the newest update the when I updated from 6.1 to 6.2 I plugged my Nook into my computer, dropped the update file onto the Nook's internal memory, then moved it to the SD card with the Root Explorer app.
Hope any of that helps. Good luck!

Thanks! I will give those a try, since everything was still on the card after the low level format.
Who knew that reformatting would be such a problem!
Did you have to unmount the sd partition, before extending it?
I extended the partition with Partition Wizard immediately after burning the dual boot image. Never messed with mounting or unmounting anything. I'm a little new to this myself really. Why would you need to mount the SD card partition?
I didn't think I had to, but racks11479 mentioned it as a possible solution in this thread, so I thought I'd ask.
None of the programs had any success in reformatting my card, so I returned it to the store and got a replacement.
Now I'm very ambivalent about trying again and possibly messing up another card.
Can anyone here think of anything that I might have done (or should have done) to cause the card to act this way?
And if anyone feels like posting a baby step guide for someone like me, I'd very much appreciate it!
Edited to add: I just found the following
*********
It also will produce a multi partition removable disk for which windows will not allow you to re-partition. If you want to get back to "normal" disk you can reformat it with Hewlett-Packard Company's HPUSBFW.exe

Also, I used an old 2GB card to reformat my NC (went fabulously easy) and then reformatted that and tried a CM7 rom, which worked, but was way too slow. This reformatted again, without any problems, so I'm not sure if the above statement (regarding bootable sd cards) is correct or not.
