Handset for Head Unit - Hardware Hacking General

Hey all, not sure if I'm posting this in the right place but meh.
I'm looking to take my cars head unit and throw it in the bin, and replace it with an Android phone, and access music/movies etc from a Wireless External drive.
Here is a basic outline of what I want to do...

I'm very unsure as to what phone I'm going to use. I'd love to use an HTC One X or a Samsung GS3, but they are just too expensive for what I'm doing.
The phone must be able to run a WiFi hotspot, have a good quality screen, preferably run Android 4+, and most of all not be too expensive.
Any justified suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks all :good:

What do you plan on using to drive the speakers once the head unit is out of the picture?

I'll have to get an amp of some sort, should have outlined that in the diagram.

Let's do this the proper way here. And by do this proper here I am stating this for my self. That statement as odd as it sounds is not meant for you. Lol!
I am a car electronics installer. I have been installing car audio, alarms and remote starters for 16 years now. And I feel very inclined to help you make the best choice as to how to go about this. So I am going to as several questions.

That's fantastic, lets use some of your juicy experience
Haven't thought too much into the AMP yet, what are your thoughts here, do you have any recommendations or suggestions?

So, what year, make and model of vehicle are you doing this in?
How much do you know about car audio?
What amp/amps, speakers will you be using?
What will you be using for volume control?
What is the reason for ditching the head unit?

Just so you know. My cell keeps dropping its data connection like I this going out of style. And it is getting late here. But what I would like is s much detailed information about what you are doing. That way when I get back here later I can throw my two cents in to the mix with a proper understanding of things. Any way if others get here and help you out before I am able to get back then good luck. If not, I look forward to helping you out.

So, what year, make and model of vehicle are you doing this in? '02 Subaru Forester
How much do you know about car audio? First project, have a back ground in electronics, IT Technician by trade.
What amp/amps, speakers will you be using? Unsure yet, haven't thought too much about the AMP, reckon I will ditch my stocko car speakers though.
What will you be using for volume control? Good question, was originally thinking the handset, but it will probably not suffice.
What is the reason for ditching the head unit? It's the stock Subaru one, it's broken, I hate CD's, BT Head Unit was an option, but I'd rather be able to use an external drive as my data source.

So, my suggestion for volume actually, I should say gain control. Should be of a hardware nature. Now, my honest suggestion, would be to purchase a new head unit. And use the headphone jack out of the device you will be using. That way you can keep the Bluetooth still. And you wouldn't necessarily have to buy an amp or amps. Unless you want massively loud music. In that case, go for the gold. But I say use a head unit because even though you don't like CD's and what not. It is always better to have a backup plan if the original one fails at any time. And a double backup plan is even better. But that would involve having a head unit and at least one amp. I will make a drawing of what I am talking about tomorrow. Not sure how far you want to take this. But maybe even an EQ installed into the mix would be a good idea. Especially if you are adamant about not using a head unit. Any way, I have to go to sleep. I am exhausted.
One other thing, did you ever think about using, say an SSD drive through an OTG cable? I'm not sure of how to use a drive as a music storage device and go through an OTG cable. But depending on the device you decide to use. That could be a viable option so that you could use a Bluetooth head unit. Any way, I am finally off.

The headphone jack has the ability to accept a headset with a microphone. It works great. As far as usb, I haven't any idea. But I hope that knowing about the jack will help.

That does help...unfortunately I would like to use a Logitech headset that utilizes both a headset and mic input separately. Would a splitter work with this? For example this item -> http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-F8V234...WQSR/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1319923903&sr=8-2 or this item -> http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-F8V234...7RC4/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1319924488&sr=8-8 (what's the difference between these two?)
Thank you!
Other than the colors there isn't really any difference between those two.
And sorry, those won't do it. I've included a pic below. If you will notice that there are three black bands on the tip of this one vs the two black bands on the tips of those others. That extra seperator is for the microphone.
This should do what you are wanting. If you can get a good enough look at the photo you should see a headset icon and a microphone icon on the female ends. It is a bit more expensive. But I didn't search for price, just the item. You can probably find cheaper at monoprice.com or maybe Ebay... Good Luck.

You do realise that the tab has a built in mic, right? but I can understand if you want something with a bit better quality. Might be worthwhile checking out USB headsets too, but can't guarantee they will work on the A500. If you decide to buy one, make sure the store has a good return policy just in case.

Just build one with a 7" double-din sized tablet that support USB host, install an external slot load USB dvd drive, use JoyCon USB interface to control the tablet through steering wheel controls, mini-box.com for a USB programmable power supply so the tablet wakes, is powered, and is put to sleep with the ignition power state.
wah la, get creative

Meh. I began on mp3car and now have moved beyond it for the most part. To really be in the game the next obvious step would be to use up to 3 computer on chip modules running android. 1 for handling obd data and navigation, another handling any other in car functions, and another which handles media functionality and polls the other two for their info. Its cheaper than a full carPC as we know it now and follows a path more inline with what car manufacturers will soon push towards.
A tablet or smartphone should be more of a complimenting functional piece, not a center for primary use while in a car.

Modern tablets could just store a ripped movie locally and be mounted in the car.
What I would like is a mobile broadbanned connection for my car, that I can connect to via Bluetooth. I wouldn't mind being able to plug in an external USB player though, hehe.

google mp3 car
youll find what your looking for there...
I was actually considering something like this, not just for a DVD player but to use as a whole head unit for my car, when I was considering a double din. I ended up just finding a double din I liked to save myself some time and money, but still something I would like to see done.
If you have any issues/questions about anything, send me a PM, maybe I can help. I'm a bit automotive inclined, and love android.
I was going to do basically what you posted, have the tablet connect to a 4 channel amp or something similar, and for power I was thinking of using (basically) a car charger, hard-wired to the normal power wires that would be plugged into the head unit. I was thinking it would be best, if possible to hard-wire this to the battery terminals (however most if not all tablets have an internal battery) that way it would be directly controlled by the car. Only problem is I'm not exactly sure how you'd power it on, I guess you could just have the amp turn on/off with the car, and keep the battery power in the tablet. You wouldn't have to worry about power up times or anything then, and audio would only play when it should, but would still more or less play on the device in the mean time...which is a bit of an issue.
Anyway, sorry for the long post, just some ideas to think about. Good luck
this is funny, I had a tablet mounted in my car and hooked in to the stereo in 2002 or 2003, it ran windows xp LOL
a cop pulled me over and asked me if I could watch movies on it, I said I could but that would be kinda stupid while driving, he said, we'll would you please turn it off, I said no I use it as a navigation system (which was microsoft streets and trips with a USB GPS),
I tell you other than the .5 of a second update times streets and trips was freaking awesome!
but DVD's??? cough, yeah I remember 1998!
the cop never did give me a ticket!

just buy a cheap tablet (e.g. Vega / Viewsonic 10s with honeycomb), a car mount, a cheap HU that has 3.5mm audio jack connected to speakers and plug the tablet to the HU with a 3.5mm audio cable. DONE! it'll probably cost u $500 including everything (even the sound system). why make it so damn complicated?

I wouldn't suggest the monoprice one. I heard that it doesn't auto connect when you start the car.
Look into the Blackberry Music Gateway. I just ordered one and it should be arriving tomorrow. It autoconnects with no problems.
I'm hoping to use this in conjunction with NFC to make everything automated.
I use the XtremeMac Incharge bluetooth. It works great and have used it with multiple phones and never had a problem syncing
I'm using this: http://dx.com/p/bluetooth-v2-0-edr-audio-receiver-w-3-5mm-audio-jack-for-iphone-4s-more-black-120198.
It's worked flawlessly so far. I've used it for over a year with my GNex and now my N4. I've never had to reconnect it after the first pairing and it's good to go as soon as I start the car. The only negative would be the shipping time from DX. It usually takes about a month for my items to arrive, but the low prices make up for the inconvenience.

Bought this from Sprint.com for around 70 bux last year. Great investment. Small in profile and works great! Music is clear and works every time.
I use the "GOGroove Smartmini aux"
It's cheap, and works great. Only downside is the annoying bright flashing blue light when it's paired. Mine is out of the way though so its not very noticible to me when driving.

Do you have another phone paired? Sync can only pair with one device at once and it was tricky figuring out how to drop the old one my first try. If that fails is there an update avail for your sync? Ford posts the updates and instructions to load using a flash drive on their website.
All good suggestions.. I like the GoGroove because I don't need a separate charger and it doesn't take up space in my storage console. I'll have to add the XtremeMac and BB Gateway to the list as well.
Funny thing is I used to use the Nexus One desktop dock to stream from my N1 in the car.
As someone linked to this seems tempting:
http://dx.com/p/bluetooth-v2-0-edr-audio-receiver-w-3-5mm-audio-jack-for-iphone-4s-more-black-120198
It's definitely gotta be the cheapest, and while only 2 reviews one does say it autoconnects. Sure hope it does.
What would you guys say is the best that:
- Autoconnects
- Has microphone support for calls (that doesn't COMPLETELY suck?)
I guess any bluetooth receive could be charged without issue... though I guess it's also nice to have one that is sort of "designed" to be used charged, so no real on/off type of thing...
With GoGroove, do you need to "turn it on" each time you start the car?
Yes my iphone was synced. Any idea how to unpaired the device? I I've since sold the iphone

3 words. . . .Black Electrical Tape :victory:
Last week I was in a rental Chevy with full BT integration. That made me realize just how nice it was, and how crappy my hacked 3.5mm input + Belkin BT in my older Saab really was.
So I broke down, called Crutchfield and ordered a Kenwood Excelon KDC-X796 head unit with full BT, USB, Pandora integration, HD radio, CD, etc. It arrived today and I had it installed in about an hour and a half, including soldering up the wiring harness. $189 well spent, fun new tech and sounds SO much better than the old stock head unit that it feels like I have a new car! Excellent, proper hands free calling with an external mike even. A bit more finish work to do when some other bits arrive on Tuesday.
There are cheaper similar options, even under $100, that lose the HD radio and CD player. I really wanted the HD radio, though who listens to CDs now?
Four hour round trip tomorrow to see my sisters and a couple of my nieces, probably streaming Spotify the whole way, with Google Nav running and some calls thrown in for good measure. The full workout.
Of course, the Crutchfield rep sold me a new set of door speakers too. "These are good, and they're on sale!" I'll get to those later. Then I suspect I'll want to replace the rear speakers. Then the dash speakers! LOL

I've been using the GROM-USB2 with a bluetooth adapter for about a year with multiple phones with no problems. It integrates with many factory stereos. In my car, I can use the steering wheel controls to skip tracks, and the seek buttons on the head unit to activate voice dialing and hang up calls. It also plays the navigation audio over the stereo speakers. It's a bit more than the ones you are looking at (about $130 with the bluetooth option), and installation is a bit more involved, but I'm really happy with it. You can find more information on their site at:

Just another Nexus 7 In-Dash install. Plus wireless charging Nexus 5 in vehicle

Hi all,
I finished my Nexus 7 tablet car install and just wanted to show you guys the finished product. Not sure if this is the right place to post.
I also mounted a Qi Charger for wireless charging by just dropping my phone in the Sunglass Holder area of the car.
The way it works is, I turn on the car, Tablet turns on, connects to my Nexus 5 Hotspot and to my bluetooth adapter. I am able to control the volume through the steering wheel controls. When I turn off the car, Tablet turns off (thanks to the command, see below). This way it ensures the tablet battery is always Full.
Here are some pics and instructions of my setup. Thanks!
PARTS
USB Car Charger
Metra Double Din Kit
Miccus Mini-Jax RX
NEXUS 7 SETUP
Root the tablet
Install Tasker to be able to:
- Power off tablet when not charging (tablet turns off when car is off)
- Use command - fastboot oem off-mode-charge 0 - (tablet turns on when car is on)
- Keep tablet awake
- Enable Wifi, Bluetooth
- Also created a custom Boot Animation when the tablet is powering on. You can see it in the video below.
Install Nova launcher to remove things like the Dock and have more control of the interface of your tablet.
NEXUS 5 SETUP
All I did was install Tasker and set it up to turn on Mobile Hotspot whenever the phone is Wireless charging. That way I just drop it in the sunglass holder and I can start tethering to the tablet.

THATS ALL FOLKS! If you have any questions, feel free to ask!
PS. Here is an older video of the setup. This is when I had the Head unit mounted under the driver seat which I did not like. I removed the faceplate off the Head Unit and was able to move the head unit in back of the tablet. This turned out to be a much cleaner install this way.
nice work. i like.
tell us about the apps you use. which launcher?
Nice work. Never understood why BMW three series has such a crappy looking dash console.

I used Nova Launcher prime and basically just removed the Dock and added gestures. The main apps I use are Plex, Pocket Casts, Google Music, Pandora, YouTube, TuneIn Radio, and Maps
Pretty much covers Music, Podcasts, Radio, Music Videos, Movies, and Navigation

Yeah, you would have to run that command through the CMD prompt. Here are some instructions - http://www.gencoupe.com/diy-do-yourself/126356-power-nexus-7-without-pressing-power-button-no-kernel-required.html

Indeed it does.
Here's an updated video just showing some of the apps.
I didn't have WiFi on so some apps say no connection.

One quick question, does the tablet get heated when ON for a long time? I have tried to use my mobile phone for navigation, but, the temperature becomes so high that they device takes time to respond (of course, I noticed this in the summer heat of India when the mobile was mounted using a windshield-mount)

So why did you feel the need to ask if you already knew? Ohhhhhh, you were just being a douche by insulting someones hard work and effort to share it with us. Didn't your mother ever teach you to live and let live?

I respect people, not douchebags! And mom jokes, really? Is this 1995?
Uptight much?
Anyway, still...why do that to an E90. No answer needed. Just another BMW driving douche's opinion. F10 owner here.
^ You're right about one thing - the douche part.
Nice install OP. Working on the same setup for my '06 330i. I plan to wire it into the AUX under the armrest vs. listening over bluetooth. I have not had a good experience with the audio quality over bluetooth.
Would appreciate more details on how you removed the faceplate and secured the head unit behind the N7. Did the head unit retain all functionality? I read that you can still use your steering wheel controls, but I'm wondering if the BMW bluetooth for calls still works with the faceplace off. Not really ideal though, because if there's a need to pair the phone again (or a new phone), you'd have to put everything back together. I may shoot for the glovebox with BMW head unit. Doing anything aftermarket is a real nightmare with this Logic 7/MOST/fiber setup.
Also, is the wireless charger able to keep up and give you a positive charge while using the phone as a hotspot?
Forget it.
Awesome use of n7. Brilliant use of tasker and fastboot command.

No. The worst thing is that car headphone jacks don't work. Seriously, unless you have Bluetooth in your car you can't use your phone for music.
I was listening to star talk radio in the car with no problems
LG G3

Why wouldn't the car jack work? Should be your typical auxiliary one, right?
I have Bluetooth for my needs, haven't plugged my phone in with a cable in forever.

Yeah that's what you would think. Headphones work but auxiliary cables don't. The current workaround is using a headphone splitter and plugging regular headphones in one socket abd the aux cable to the car stereo in the other

That's crazy, did you try two different auxiliary cables? I know you can buy auxiliary cables new and not work. It's very common, unfortunately. I did see you posted that I guess various people have had this issue though.

Nope the cable works with other phones. It's a know g3 problem, Google it.
I did a factory reset on mine last night which has cleared up the aux cable issue in my car (for now).

Many folks have said when they went to a good quality auxiliary cable, works fine. I use Bluetooth to my Entune unit in my Tundra, but I did test the aux after reading some of this. My monster cable aux had no issues....

OMG the best buy guy was right, the monster cable does give me better HD.... Dude just admit it, there is a pretty bad bug in that most cables dont work and the ones that do have popping sounds. The phone is also laggy. Think back to the froyo days, that's the way you feel using this phone. and the screen is dim. I'm not some troll, just someone who has owned this and the M8. Between the two I would still choose this one, but more so because the m8 has horrible battery life and an annoying power button that make its a pain to use.

Not sure what ur deal is slappy, but don't try to tell me how my phone acts. I have NO popping, or aux cable issues at all. It is what it is, take it or leave it. I just gave my experience with my phone, my truck, and what others have said. U started the thread, people here try to give input/advice, but if u already know everything why bother? If u don't like the phone, replace it with a device that u will be happy with. Very simple....
I don't have this issue at all. Plug into both a cassette adapter in my beater and an aux cable in my wife's minivan and both work flawless. I get an audible double beep when I plug in, the icon in the status bar shows I'm connected to Aux cable, and my podcasts and Spotify work flawlessly. Aux cable was $4 at the checkout counter of a Walmart and the cassette adapter was from my old XM dashboard receiver. Nothing fancy and no issues at all.

I have an iFrogz aux cable that I got from when I worked at Sprint. My T-Mo G3 works great in my car with that and another cable I have. Never had better sound. Works way better and sounds cleaner than my Nexus ever did.

Yep, all those people with car aux problems using cables that work with every other phone must be doing something wrong since your cable/car/phone combo works lol.
