I have been trying to search the forum but having no luck. I switched from cm7 to cm10 recently and I am looking for a way app/utility whatever to have my sd card mount on my pc when I plug in usb so I can transfer files to my storage partition. I was using USB Mass Storage Watcher app(I think it was called) before, but it doesn't like cm10 very much. If there is no way to see usb connection from android to pc, what would be the next best option?

That setting is built into CM10. Go to storage, then hit menu and USB configuration pops up. Select that. Select mass storage and back out. Now when you connect to PC both emmc and sdcard should show up as disk drives. The only app that I might use with that is my modified NookColorUMS app that I modified to work on CM9. It also works on CM10. Get it on my tips thread linked in my signature. And read about it in the second post in that thread. It allows you to mount any partition you want with UMS.
You might also look into using one of the transfer-over-wifi apps to get your data files onto Nook, I use WifiFileExplorer to this effect and never hassle with USB cords/connexions. Quick and sees everything.

Love Wifi File Explorer Pro. I haven't taken an sd card out of my devices in months.
Thanks
Beautiful, I didn't think to hit menu after I was in the storage settings. I'll check out the wifi explorer too. Thank you guys!

Hey Everyone,
I apologise if this is in the wrong forum (not sure if it should be in Android Development), and before I start I want to make it clear that I DID use the search function, I searched for "Can't Enable USB Mass Storage" and "No option to mount SD Card" with no relevant results.
Rom: JFv1.51 CRB43-EU
Ok, I was using my phone fine I managed to sync around 12GB worth of music and transfer a few files last night (I flashed the ROM around 20:00 GMT after trying out several hero builds).
This morning I mounted the SD Card to my laptop (OS is Windows 7 RC1) and transferred a few APK's. Suddenly as I was in the market the phone comes up with "Checking SD Card for Errors" and had for some reason unmounted itself from the PC.
Now when I plug in the USB cable all I get is the light to indicate it's charging. There's no option to mount the SD Card. I've tried it on my Laptop, My Vista Desktop AND My Xbox 360 (usually there's a mount option when you connect to that which allows the xbox to see music on the phone).
Strangest thing is the MicroSD Card seems fine, I am able to play my music and see the 2 pictures I have stored on it. Another site suggested using Anycut to make a shortcut to SD CArd and then ticking Enable USB Mass Storage. This doesn't work either, I get a ! in a triangle in the status bar saying USB Mass Storage Enabled but neither my laptop or my desktop will pick it up.
Any Suggestions?
Thanks,
Steve.

Yep, Should it be?
Yes it should be. Try uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers (USB mass storage devices)
Edit: Double pOst
I'm the only one having problems with usb mass storage? With all builds from all chef and all kernels it happens the same. I can read from the pc what is on the SD, but if I copy a file Android dont see it , the file size is 0. And new files created in android can't be readed by windows either (I can only read the files that were written on the SD before the last android boot)
I missing something? I tryied dismounting the SD from android with same results
Are you using it in the same way USB MASS STORAGE in WM6.5 ???
I use USB storage all the time and in every andrioid build I've used(about 20) I've never had any problems. There are many people like me that also have no problems, but there are also many like you that have plenty of problems. I'm not sure that anyone really knows why.

Thanks for answering. Do you have 2 partitions on the sd ?
Just want to check a few things:
1: you plug in via usb and select "disk drive"
2: you are not still connected via usb when trying to read the items on the sd card?
3: When you disconnect the usb, you use the usual method (right click the icon in the taskbar and select "safely remove hardware") then wait for the SD card to be prepared by android before accessing it?
Also, how are you accessing the files in Android?

1 & 2: Yes. Windows assing the drive letter and can read it fine.
3: I connect Android to pc, choose USB MASS STORAGE, in windows access the new drive letter, rename a file , choose "safele remove hardware", disconnect the cable, wait for Android to "prepare the sd" , go to the file and it has the old name!!! the weird thing is that if I connect to the pc again, I see in the pc the new name!
Is like Android is working with his own FAT32 table IN MEMORY and not refreshing it.
I tried Ghost Commander/ES file manager/Root Explorer, all with the same results.
PD: I found something else... If I DISMOUNT the SD from Android Im still able to access it with ES File Manager, etc. So its not really dismounting it Why can this be happening with all builds/roms?
I have the same problem. Strange thing is it worked fine fore the first couple of days. Anybody have a solution?
Try using "Rescan Media" app after you copy your files to the SD
Still nothing. I have to boot back into winMo to transfer files to my SD card! This is really annoying,
Plenty of other tools provide media scan as well, like Optimize toolbox, Switch pro widget and more. they all worked for me.
[edit] sorry, optimize toolbox doesn't offer it, it just clears the cache :/
power control plus however has this function as well.
I had it at one time but because I'm an Android newbie, I have no idea where to look.
Using Astro or ES.

It's ok, we all start somewhere right?
Load up astro hit home then up and your usb storage device is whatever is in usb_storage. Remember to give it a few secs to detect it and prepare the drive.
Your SD card (internal) is sdcard and your microsd is external_sd.
GL.
Hope this helps.

Excellent! Thanks.
Is it possible to access the micro SD card through a computer? When exploring the acer drive after plugging it in you can see all the stuff on the internal memory but can't get to the external_sdcard folder.
at the moment i dont think this is possible but give it a few days and it might be a possibility.

You can purchase (I think it was a whole $1.50) an app called WiFi File Explorer. It sets your tablet with its own IP address from whatever source you are using for WiFi. Then you access your SD Card by entering in the IP address line in your browser. The app will give you the exact address line to enter into your browser.
Its like a virtual FTS server actually. Works like a charm. If you are worried about security, you can require a password.
Accessing external sd and usb drives
It is possible to access the SD and USB drives using a file manager such as Astro or Estrongs. The drives can be found in the main directory under subdirectory /mnt.
Hope this helps. I had the same problem at first.

According to Acer, that isn't possible right now. Not that I'm inclined to believe them, but the manual is pretty thorough and I decided to go through every page and it clearly states "Transferring files from a microSD card to your PC.
Remove the card from the tablet and use a card reader or USB adapter to access the card as an external storage device."
I'm REALLY hoping they address this in an update. I thought it was a Honeycomb limitation due to the Xoom but Asus has addressed it by looping it as a folder in the internal storage so I mean, Acer and Xoom should be able to do that as well. Unless there are unforeseen problems with doing that? /shrug.
USB and a camera
Thanks for starting this thread! I'm also a newb and I have Astro and ES installed (now).
I am trying to read images from my camera (Nikon D3). When I attach the USB and turn on the camera the A500 says scanning for media. But none shows up in the photo browser (I'm sure I need a better viewer and suggestions are welcome!). When using ES or Astro and navigating to the usb_storage directory it shows as empty.
For background, the D3 holds 2 CF cards with the 2nd typically used as overflow and both are 8GB. Each card normally just has a DCIM directory with photos in one or more directories below that.
Once I connected up the A500, on one of the cards 2 additional directories were created (the one without any images currently) called .android_secure and LOST.DIR. I can't see any of these directories on the A500 or any of the images (all .jpg). I plugged into my laptop for this info.
I am trying not to have to carry my laptop anymore so any suggestions, ideas or research resources would be appreciated.
I've run into a HUGE issue. I wonder if anyone else has experienced this.
The files on my USB flash drives begins to get erased/deleted if it is still connected to the tablet when the device is activated from hibernation mode. I don't know if the file explorer apps are causing this bug. I've used Linda File Manager and Astro and 3 different USB drives to test this. I've even restored my tablet to factory settings.
Hello,
I have also problems navigating the usb drive. As mentioned above I found the dir but it shows (Directory empty).Im using a 8gb transcend flash drive. On 128mb flash drive there is no problem viewing and accesing the files.Any other have the same problem or solution?
I change the file system from NTFS to FAT32 and it works now(such a stupid user Ive become)
OK, to get to this message, I had to read a warning about getting banned if not a developer thread.
Well, this is. Sort of.
I posted a question in the general forum and commented on the same subject in the Q&A forum. I think I know my answer but I would like to know why this problem exists.
I just got my tablet Friday evening. I figured it all out and was able to use external storage on drives and USB sticks. When I try to connect my phone as a disk drive, no files.
I am assuming that access to these files is for lack of root access, which I am not going to get because I immediately let it update to 3.2.
So, could someone tell me if lack of root is the answer and why? The phone does instantly show up as a disk drive on XP and Windows 7.
Thanks, and moderators, please don't kick me out.
Did you try mounting your phone, if you can? And yes root it would be easier with the usb mount app, or just use an app like es file explorer that can go into the root section without root then go to mnt and in one of those files should be your phone files, because i have an env touch and i use usb mass storage and it shows up on my iconia
Thanks. Yes, I did see the folder MNT but it did not show up. Using my usual file explorers, I can see the internal storage and the SD card. The next entry is the USB STORAGE where I find no files when the phone is connected.
If I connect an external drive or usb memory device, I can access all the files. When I connect the phone as a drive I see that nothing is there.
When I connect these same devices to my home pc running Win 7 and laptop with XP, they all connect the same way.
There is something in the OS that is not letting my tablet file system see my phone file system.
Thanks for the reply, I'll keep my eye on this thread.
I'm having the same problem, i can import photos or videos from the phone when the phone is on mtp mode (media transfer protocol) but when in file transfer mode (msc) nothing shows up in the mnt folder or in drive mount app. i'm running taboonay 2.2 with villain kernel. It works fine with external hdd ntfs or fat. When connecting the phone to my computer i had to install a driver from windows update and it shows as an xperia arc, do i also need a driver in my tablet? Has anyone already connected and android phone to an android tablet in mass storage mode?

Not sure Root has anything to do with it. I'm rooted on both phone and tab , and have no access to the files on my phone. When in "disk drive" mode, all it does is "charge".
I am thinking of getting the M, but it appears the device uses MTP when you connect it a PC. I am coming from ThunderBolt, and certainly enjoyed simply mounting the SD card in Windows, then copying whatever I wanted in and out. I even recovered some files that I accidentally deleted. I would also copy files to the phone for books (in random formats) , apps (apk), videos, photos etc.
Judging by the name I would guess you can copy MP3s to phone under MTP. Can you copy other types of files? Is there a way to just mount the internal storage in Windows? Thanks!

You should be able to copy everything, if you double click on the device in Explorer (on Windows, anyway). It should give you a display of all the folders on the device, I think.
But yes, MTP sucks. For whatever reason, it simply doesn't work with my current phone. Even on a fresh clean install of Windows 7, the driver will not install, and this is seen across multiple computers, stock ROMs and custom ones. I haven't been able to transfer data to or from my phone using the USB cable in ages. I can do it over WiFi, thankfully, and I can also just pop out the microSD card if needed, but MTP still frustrates me to no end.
It works with my tablet just fine, though, so it's the Motorola driver that's messed up.
Engadget review also reported a failure to install drivers for MTP on one of their test machines, despite best efforts to trouble shoot.
Is there even a benefit to MTP? To me it sounds like pure pain.

Why would you be annoyed at all, you can just mount the device as Mass Storage (just like the Thunderbrick) and move files that way. MTP is not an issue.

That's the answer I was hoping for, thank you! One last question : how do you mount the device as mass storage, using the standard Android dialog that shows up in the notification bar?
Please be patient with me, I don't have the phone yet.
Finally, my Thunder hasn't bricked yet, but it's getting close...

It simply gives you the option when you plug it in - you can choose to mount it as usb storage, or mtp.

Not anymore! Since the JB update, the USB mass storage option is gone! This pisses me off since I need that to connect to my vehicle's audio system. WTF would they remove that feature?!
Yeah. It makes me angry... I hate mtp. Gawd Google y u no usb mass storage?!? ¡¿¡

I've never had this problem -- until I upgraded to KK. Now my work PC will not allow me to install the MTP driver. Haven't tried yet on my home pc, but I am not optimistic. Come on! Some genius hacker dude out there has to have figured this one out by now!
Wi-Fi file explorer is my method of choice.

I do not get it. My Maxx mounts what appears to be MTP but when in click on the phone icon in Win7 (actually Parallels desktop on a Mac) the internal SD is mounted! Just like before. That is with 444. So is 442 way different on the older msm8960s?
Now on a Mac it is doodoo.
I can access both SD cards from PC without any problem in MTP mode. I installed the drivers while I was on JB I think

I used to use that on my old phone but forgot about it. I'll have to give it another go. Thanks for the reminder.
