Lock software buttons while playing? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My 3 year old loves playing on the nexus 7 but keeps hitting the software buttons and exiting the games. Anyone know if it possible to lock the software buttons (back, home and tasklist) while playing?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app

When I had my Galaxy Tab 10.1, I ran the AOKP ROM on it and in the power menu was an option to hide or show the software buttons. It was very handy to me for this exact reason. I now have a Nexus 7 that I would like to keep stock (rooted of course) and I haven't found a solution yet. I'm hoping Nova or some other launcher will get this functionality.
I'm pretty sure AOKP supports the Nexus 7 if you want to go that route.

How would you do to quit the game if everything is locked ?

You could long press recent apps to lock the buttons
To unlock, you could do a combo like press home, back, recent apps, home to unlock the buttons or just do a long press again.
You could also hide the buttons altogether. I have no idea if an app has the ability to do this kind of thing but apps that have full-screen video are able to remove the buttons so there must be some way to trigger the buttons to hide when you want. Maybe hide the buttons by long pressing recent apps and then they come back when the power button is pressed?

Thanks for the answers.
Just to clarify its not stock its rooted and running a custom ROM.
The hardware buttons could trigger the return to unlocked state and the idea of combo lock and unlock is also an option.
Gonna try AOKP and see if they implemented the feature in the powermenu for the nexus 7.

Not a fix but something I'm hoping for!
With all the rumors floating around about Android 4.2, one of the more interesting ones is user profiles. If we do in fact get user profiles, I"m hoping app locking is part of that!
O.

Not sure about AOKP but I know ParanoidAndroid has an "expanded desktop" option available on the power menu that hides the navigation buttons on the fly.

any key to wake?

Guys,
Just taken delivery of my first Android handset - nice to be back on here, spent years on here when I ran WM! Anyway, I've been looking for and haven't found an app that'll let me wake the phone by pressing any button, rather than just the power button. Seen stuff for WM, but not Android.
Can anyone help?

to be honest having used the htc hero I was always getting frustrated cause everytime I took out the phone from my pocket I found it had unlocked cause the minute you pressed any of the home search , menu buttons the phone would unlock and it could then even make unwanted phone calls but as for the desire it only wakes when u press the power button which I think is great just my own opinion.
Try this one on the market :
http://apps.doubletwist.com/No-Lock/-2216879159323801559
When you'll hit any key, no more "slide to unlock", phoen wake up direct to home screen
Having used the HD2 I too miss this feature. Not necessarily pressing a key to unlock the device, but simply to bring up the 'drag down to unlock' screen.

Here is this one also - http://apps.doubletwist.com/Screen-ON-widget/6251491150679267019
These 2 apps replace the need to "slide-to-unlock", but wouldn't you still have to press down the "power" button to actually turn on the screen?
I too have found this a little annoying. I think this may be a feature that can be changed once rooting of the phone starts.
Sort of like re-mapping the hardware buttons to where all you have to do is hit the trackpad or MENU button to activate the screen.
Application like this?
http://apps.doubletwist.com/HeroKey-(root)/1990841848356448722
No this would be interesting to possibly get for the Desire. Allows you to remap the hardware buttons. Too bad it is -
1 - For the Hero
2 - Requires root
After pressing the power key, mine unlocks by pressing just the menu button as well, FWIW.

that's a bonus, thanks.
what would be even nicer would be if the screen woke up (to lockscreen is fine) on a press of any hardware button. guess it'll need root.
just figured out how i am using 2 programs one is nolock and seccond is Widget Locker. nolock wakes up the phone with any key and by default unlocks the phone BUT if you have Widget Locker installed it prevents from unlocking so that way you have your phone with any-button wake and still locked, tested with my LG 2x ,first app is lightweight and dont consume much battery.. i dont know if i made my self clear im italian email me if you want the link or any question

[DISCUSS] Xperia Play - Gamepad Tip

Just upgraded from Nexus One to Xperia Play. Liking the gamepad so far, disliking the terrible Sony Ericsson UI and bloatware! Looking forward to root when available, then hopefully a decent custom ROM. This has the potential to be the ultimate gamers device, with the right support...
I have a little tip for those of you running FPse. In order to best imitate the PSX controller, I have mapped the L2/R2 keys to the volume up/down keys. It works pretty well, and whilst not totally comfortable for games that require a lot of use of the L2/R2 keys, it beats any alternative I have tried.
You won't be able to adjust the Media Volume in game, however if you press the Menu key, you can use the volume keys as normal.
Hope this helps!

yh thats a good tip, but i just like to use the onscreen L2/R2. i turn off all other virtual controls so they are not present on the screen and i move the L2/R2 ones to the bottom of the screen so you can access them easily and quickly.
What version of FPSE are you using.
I cant seem to map the X and O button on mine.
Very irritating.
well i've been using 10.17. i've never had trouble mapping X or O in any emulator. what exactly is happening to you? maybe try posting a video or something? it's hard to provide a solution without seeing it in action im afraid.
Why not just use psx4droid its not on the market, but you can still get it on the devs site!

I am convinced different xperia play models exist.
It is impossible to hit my power button when using the pad. I can try my hardest to knock the power button even when using L1 and fail every time.
Power buton is hidden away nicely on my play.
Strange.
For people having trouble mapping certain keys try selecting them on screen in the menu with your finger then press X to map it.

Got a Xperia Play today and the first thing I did was installing snes9x EX. I had exactly the same problem, mapping the circle key seemed to work ok as the other buttons, but when I tried to play any game all worked fine 'til I used the circle-key (then it acted like I was pressing the "back" button on the phone).
This was VERY annoying but I found a solution. Atleast in Snes9x EX. In the options --> key config I just set the "Exit"-key (which default was mapped as "back") to "None". So now the circle-button is working as it should when playing snes-games. Actually it still is mapped as "back" (and pressing the "back"-button does the same as the circle-key - this is by the way how the two buttons seem to act by default on the phone) but it works
Sorry for my bad english, and hope this helps. I'll try install the psx emu tomorrow.

Remapping capactive buttons - returning home.

Ok so I have this SW related problem (ROM on my sig), where home button not always works. If i hold power button until the power screen appears, i can close it and then home buton works OK for anoter lets say 15mins only, so its quite annoying.
How can map return home action for lets say holding down search key? The problem is neither about button itself (works perfect n other ROMS) nor launcher (when killing foreground app phone returns to the homescreen)
I know i can do it from screen with button savior but it's by far not as practical as using capactive buttons and it's not what I'am looking for.
Other than that the ROM is very close to perfect, so changing it is not an option

I think, must check, that Jellybean lets you do that?
Well, even if it does, I'am running MIUI on ICS.
CM10 and codefireX nightlies (and JellyTime too maybe, I haven't tried) have that working. There's a CM feature in settings called 'Hardware keys' where you can assign different functions to all keys for short press and long press. Though bliind's MIUI is based on CM, it doesn't have the option.

I see...
is there any way of getting similiar sw on other roms?
btw i'am running the official 2.9.7 MIUI based on ICS straight from miui.com, not bliind's custom build.
I remember there was some app for that.
I think it's called button remapper, and it does just that. It's in a beta version, but I used it with success. It is ROOT, but you already have that.
If you can't find it then I'd be willing to pull the .apk from a backup and give it to you.

Multitask button on Nav Bar

Looked around and didn't see this being brought up. Is there away to out the multitasking app instead of the menu button and bring back the 3 dot menu button back in apps? Hate freaking menu buttons and having to long press the home.
I remember figuring out a way to add software nav buttons on an S4 manually by editing some lines in the system but since the soft nav bar is already present I don't think that would work. Any ideas? Thanks.

I'm with you, I think its stupid to have a dedicated menu button when android already has this covered.
The apps the poster above is speaking of does not fix this issue as it also hides the buttons, which is just dumb. Just be patient, I'm sure we will have a fix soon!

With the S4 I was able to manually add the On screen nav buttons with a line of code. Default android soft buttons are back home and multitask LG edited that to the menu button which is annoying. Let me know what you find. I'm going to try some stuff my self

While I would like to have a dedicated multitasking button, I don't think the menu button is a waste or stupid. There are still numerous apps that don't adhere to Google's new rules for a software menu button and they result in a black bar on the screen. LG dodged this by adding a dedicated software menu button. If you want to see how annoying it is, just pick up an HTC One (or DNA, or One X) and it will make more sense. What they did is emulate the Optimus G Pro (and Samsung's Touchwiz) with software buttons to give the same feel (hold home for multitasking, back and menu). I see why they did it. But yeah, it would be nice if they'd add an option for a multitasking button as either a fourth option or in place of the menu. It would certainly make more sense than the notification shade toggle.

The main reason I did not get the One was because of the stupid buttons. First not on screen and second only 2 buttons.
I do think it will only be a matter of time until someone makes a zip to add the recent button back. Wish I knew how

So my solution to this after 2 days of fiddling with the phone and trying EVERYTHING actually turned out for the better. The setup I have is using GMD gesture control for my buttons and auto hide navbar to have the navbar gone. This app let's you slide certain regions of the screen and trigger different conditions. I have no buttons at all on my screen and have slide functions that work perfect exactly where the Normal buttons would go. Slide up on the left is menu, slide in middle is home, and slide in right is recent apps. My back button is set by my thumb and it works out much better than I could have hoped.

Apps that have their own 3-dot menu
Thanks for the research on this topic. Does anyone know if the GMD app allows an app to retain its 3-dot menu functionality? I've encountered several apps that won't work with the G2's menu softkey preventing you from accessing the app's options.

[Q] Can I get the home icon to return to the bottom of my screen

I have a galaxy tab 2 and just bought a galaxy tab 4 (mainly for mirroring). I hate using the push button on the 4 to get to my home screen. Is there a launcher or some work around where I can find a way not to have to push a button to get to my home screen? An improvement, but not an ideal one, would be to be able to put the home icon permanently in what I will call the "double box" screen to the left of the start button.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
JD
You could use nova launcher to help remap the three buttons at the bottom and it also has a setting to use custom gestures along with twin finger swiping. Somehow mine is set that if I swipe downward it goes directly to home screen. It is a really adaptive launcher with a lot if customizing I haven't unlocked yet..lol
