Just upgraded from Nexus One to Xperia Play. Liking the gamepad so far, disliking the terrible Sony Ericsson UI and bloatware! Looking forward to root when available, then hopefully a decent custom ROM. This has the potential to be the ultimate gamers device, with the right support...
I have a little tip for those of you running FPse. In order to best imitate the PSX controller, I have mapped the L2/R2 keys to the volume up/down keys. It works pretty well, and whilst not totally comfortable for games that require a lot of use of the L2/R2 keys, it beats any alternative I have tried.
You won't be able to adjust the Media Volume in game, however if you press the Menu key, you can use the volume keys as normal.
Hope this helps!

yh thats a good tip, but i just like to use the onscreen L2/R2. i turn off all other virtual controls so they are not present on the screen and i move the L2/R2 ones to the bottom of the screen so you can access them easily and quickly.
What version of FPSE are you using.
I cant seem to map the X and O button on mine.
Very irritating.
well i've been using 10.17. i've never had trouble mapping X or O in any emulator. what exactly is happening to you? maybe try posting a video or something? it's hard to provide a solution without seeing it in action im afraid.
Why not just use psx4droid its not on the market, but you can still get it on the devs site!

Grrrrrrrr.
always press the power button when playing action game like street fighter EX2.
the power button design is really a failure

I am convinced different xperia play models exist.
It is impossible to hit my power button when using the pad. I can try my hardest to knock the power button even when using L1 and fail every time.
Power buton is hidden away nicely on my play.
Strange.
For people having trouble mapping certain keys try selecting them on screen in the menu with your finger then press X to map it.

Got a Xperia Play today and the first thing I did was installing snes9x EX. I had exactly the same problem, mapping the circle key seemed to work ok as the other buttons, but when I tried to play any game all worked fine 'til I used the circle-key (then it acted like I was pressing the "back" button on the phone).
This was VERY annoying but I found a solution. Atleast in Snes9x EX. In the options --> key config I just set the "Exit"-key (which default was mapped as "back") to "None". So now the circle-button is working as it should when playing snes-games. Actually it still is mapped as "back" (and pressing the "back"-button does the same as the circle-key - this is by the way how the two buttons seem to act by default on the phone) but it works
Sorry for my bad english, and hope this helps. I'll try install the psx emu tomorrow.

Is there a way to disable the shortcut of pressing the middle of the DPAD and the messaging button? When i play emulator games, it always pops up.
Ha, same thing here! At least now I know why it was coming up ...
Yeah, that would be q nice registry fix! Very annoying while playing action games, not so bad on rpg's though....
yea!! i cant play street fighter alpha without concentrating on not hitting the centre button. not easy i tell u..
For my snes i reassigned the buttons to be the pie button one of the buttons and the volume up another button (makes it easy to run and jump in super mario). Also, i reassigned my start to be volume down and it's perfect.
Before you get too excited this isn't a fix to the key mapping issue, it is simply me explaining how I've set up the keys to make games be playable on both emulators. with this set up they do work pretty well though.
FpseCE
First of all your going to want a frameskip of 0. With the snapdragon processor I've found that for the games I've tried at least it just makes them slower to add a frameskip.
Now for the keys. First open up the phone and then push the top left of the screen to go into portrait mode with the keys open. Your going to want to set the controller type to dual shock. Once that's done go into multikey. Push buttons 1-8 in order and unselect any buttons that are already highlighted and in use. then go back to 1 and start setting up your keys. This is how I set up mine.
Mutikey PS Controller Key Expo Key
1 Square Left
2 Circle Right
3 Triangle Up
4 X Down
5 R1 Camera Button
6 L1 Applications Button
7 Start Space Bar
8 Select Backspace
For racing games I switch the X and the R1 button because for some reason every time I pushed another key while holding X it would make me press X again to go again. Switching those two keys fixes that problem.
If you want to try and set up it differently for a certain game here is a list of all the keys that work for the LG Expo. (Left, Right, Up, Down, Space Bar, Enter/Ok (two buttons act as the same entry), Backspace, Camera Button, Application Button, Volume Up, Volume down)
Then go out of mutikey by pushing the back button on the phone. Go back to the controller and push the down arrow to set up the analog stick. Click on the box below the left analog stick until it shows a PSP looking device with the screen lit.
Push back on your phone and go into screen mapping. I prefer the 5 by 3 grid. Tap on the middle left most spot and change the control to left analog stick, an L with a circle around it. Make sure the input type is the arrows pointing both ways meaning it will only stay pressed as long as you press it. Then go to icon and change it to a target looking icon with a circle and a circle around it.
Now you're ready to play. Make the game full screen again and now your screen is the analog stick. Anywhere on the screen will actually activate the analog stick. What I do is put my thumb under the image on the screen so I can check and see which way it is facing without lifting my thumb.
MorphGear
The keys that work with MorphGear are the same as with FpseCE and those are (Left, Right, Up, Down, Space Bar, Enter/Ok (two buttons act as the same entry), Backspace, Camera Button, Application Button, Volume Up, Volume down).
I only play GBA games with my phone, so for other systems you may need to set them up differently, although these should work the same for the GB, GBC, NES, and many SNES games if not some others.
For up, down, left, and right I use those same buttons on the keyboard. I then use the Camera Button, Application Button and OK buttons for A, B, and R in different variations depending on the game I'm playing. Then use Volume Up and Volume Down for Start and Select. I put the Space Bar as the L button, but I don't intend on playing games that use it for anything else than occasional use.
If you were to play games that consistently use the L button you could either use Ok and Space Bar for A and B and then use the Camera Button and Application Button for the R and L buttons. However many games would also require you to press A and B at the same time so you would probably have to switch the A and B and the Start and Select buttons. it would be a bit weird holding the phone to play games with the A and B at the volume keys (most of the reason I avoid games that require use of the L key), but it would be playable.
Well, I hope all this helps.
You had me pretty excited there for a minute. Thanks for the info though.
Thanks for your excellent post! Would it be possible for you to upload your fpseCE configuration file? I am having problems getting fpseCE working, every rom i load just exits the program...

First of all it might just be the version of fpsece you're using. I had some issues with that myself for a bit. Make sure you're using fpsece 0.10. You can get that here.
http://perso.numericable.fr/schtruck/FpseCE_010.zip
I've also attached my fpse.ini file as well in case it isn't just the version you are using. You are still going to need to edit the keys for your games like I mentioned in my first post to get those properly working.
I am currently using Fpse version 0.10.57.
While it works perfectly in every way, I have one problem with the key configuration. When assigning controls in the ''inputs'' option and then selecting hardware keys, I am able to assign every kep accept for circle.
When I try to assign circle it does not want to assign to circle. It will assign start or square but not circle.
It's not a fault in the key since the circle button works and can been assigned in the sega emulator as well as nintendo.
It seems to be an actual fault wih the program.
Anyone else had a similar problem? Should I try a different version?
At the moment I am not able to use the circle key.
Press the screen when mapping circle, then press circle(hardkey).

Tried that & it worked, thanks man, appreciate it.
I've been days unable to use one of the buttons, sometimes it'd be the circle or the cross.
Whenever I previously try to assign the keys, they'd always be ONE not working.
However, when holding the screen at the same time (as you mentioned) it worked!
Cheers.
Not intending to necrothread but your advice helped me as well, JM43. Thanks!
My 3 year old loves playing on the nexus 7 but keeps hitting the software buttons and exiting the games. Anyone know if it possible to lock the software buttons (back, home and tasklist) while playing?

When I had my Galaxy Tab 10.1, I ran the AOKP ROM on it and in the power menu was an option to hide or show the software buttons. It was very handy to me for this exact reason. I now have a Nexus 7 that I would like to keep stock (rooted of course) and I haven't found a solution yet. I'm hoping Nova or some other launcher will get this functionality.
I'm pretty sure AOKP supports the Nexus 7 if you want to go that route.

You could long press recent apps to lock the buttons
To unlock, you could do a combo like press home, back, recent apps, home to unlock the buttons or just do a long press again.
You could also hide the buttons altogether. I have no idea if an app has the ability to do this kind of thing but apps that have full-screen video are able to remove the buttons so there must be some way to trigger the buttons to hide when you want. Maybe hide the buttons by long pressing recent apps and then they come back when the power button is pressed?

Thanks for the answers.
Just to clarify its not stock its rooted and running a custom ROM.
The hardware buttons could trigger the return to unlocked state and the idea of combo lock and unlock is also an option.
Gonna try AOKP and see if they implemented the feature in the powermenu for the nexus 7.

Not a fix but something I'm hoping for!
With all the rumors floating around about Android 4.2, one of the more interesting ones is user profiles. If we do in fact get user profiles, I"m hoping app locking is part of that!
O.
Not sure about AOKP but I know ParanoidAndroid has an "expanded desktop" option available on the power menu that hides the navigation buttons on the fly.
Hello is there a way to remove the Navy bar when gaming ? It would be really nice to just press the volume down two times and the up volume button once or a different combination to exit the game . Just for the games I wouldnt mind having the soft keys for the apps . Hopefully this gives someone an idea and an app could be done just for the g2.

Not that I've seen. I've been going back and forth using LMT, GMD Auto Nav and just the regular nav bar for a few days. Can't get used to the double-step. Wish there was a way!
try full!screen its free in the play store
GMD auto hide soft keys. Learn to use it and you can always have extra screen real estate. And yes out gives a full screen to games.
