Nexus 7 Advice - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I just sold my iPad and ordered the Nexus 7
After reading all these threads about screens cracking by themselves among other issues I am a bit paranoid.
Anyway any advice or tips as this is my first Android device
Thanks :good:

Don't worry about it until it happens to you... I've got two of these things and they have none of these problems... just remember... happy customers don't go to forums and start a thread about " why is my tablet so perfect?"... so a lot of what you see here are people looking for a solution to a problem... and even if you see a thousand posts on the same "screen lifting" thread... it only represents a small percentage of actual production... MOST users get a nexus, love a nexus, get addicted to a nexus, complain about lack of sleep
You should be all good... the odds are in your favor

I don't believe any of the stories about the screens cracking by themselves.

I also ordered two Nexus 7 and both are perfect. So don't worry, odds are on your side.

Mine tried to kill me in my sleep one night, I did a factory reset and it hasn't done it since. But really I have two with no issues. If you read all these threads about complaints I think you start looking for issues. I have a $2500 8000 series Samsung led TV and the screen isn't perfect either.

Thanks for the reassurance
So before first use should I download the nexus toolkit and work from there?

Since you are new to Android, I recommend leaving it stock and see how you like it. You might decide stock is the way you like it! If not, at least you will have an idea what you want different from stock.
Sent from my GT-P7510 using Tapatalk 2

Zero issues with mine so far also. And you want want to stay stock for very long. There are a number of great ROMs out there and its fun checking them out. Nexus 7 toolkit works great for rooting as does wugs.

Don't worry about it. I would recommend buying a good screen protecter because only after a couple of days my screen had a few scratches on it.

You might want to use the toolkit to unlock the bootloader. If you wait until later it will wipe all your data. You can always wait to root and ROM later.
I agree with Krista that you might not want to get too carried away to begin with. Check out the bean for all its glory before you roam elsewhere, so you'll know what you are missing.

Forums always collect all the bad feedback. You have to consider how many are sold, good vs bad. Mine is a C8O and has been perfect out of the box. None of the horror stories that I've read and I would take certain issues with a grain of salt.
When you get it, just play around with it. Don't be afraid to long press or swipe. Often times new menu options open when you long press something.

Flash on nexus 7...really annoying i when I can't view websites

So is there a way I can have flash on the nexus 7?
Is dissapointing that can't watch some web pages..I bought this not to turn on my PC and I still need to go to my pc, so what's the point of this piece of crap?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
There are several guides on how to this on here.
Load an alternate browser like Firefox or the AOSP browser (look in themes and apps section) and side load the Flash apk ..which has been posted multiple times shouldn't be hard at all to find it.

Exactly.
Did you not read anything about the device before or after you bought it. Everyone knew flash wasn't available for jellybean before. And there are workarounds found after.

But before you return it, check it for screen lift, dead pixels, etc. and then if it's in perfect shape, go ahead and post where you are returning it to, so people who are hunting for their own N7 can actually get one
Dont get me wrong, I love my nexus, no way I am giving it back !!!
Is just that when my wife is using it, she comes across some flash sites, and she says " this doesn't work, I don't know why you expend $200 on this"

So how is it?

I know these types of threads are kind of a no no. But I just want some rooted users experiences. I have watched way to many reviews and am always left wanting more. So how is the nexus 7? Was it everything you expected? Any defects I should look at when I first get it? Thanks.

To be honest, just a toy. Something I can use around the house or whenever I go anywhere and don't want to carry my laptop. Also for magazines books and so on and so forth. I don't think it's bad for around ~260 need the 16gb since I have 4+ gbs alone in music. Also would be nice to use rather than my nexus for gaming and video etc.

better than expected, much. gaming is an awesome experience on it, web browsing is very natural(but not chrome, the android browser), batter life blows everything away, and then theres its performance..
It's great. I don't personally own one but someone in my family does and it's a nice little tablet. Only problem he had was he couldn't watch flash videos online but I solved that by installing a Flash .apk file and installing Firefox as the browser. Gaming is epic due to it's quad core.
flash plays fine on the android browser too, included with aosp, not with stock(chrome).
Well should have the means to purchase it next month. Hopefully nothing comes up. Can't wait to see what it's all about. How about some of the ROM's and kernels? Not asking your combos just how are they.

So what about the goodies from Google. How long does that last? Should be able to purchase the beginning of next month.

Not sure how long it will last, there is no way to tell. Just get it when you can as soon as you can. If you get them, awesome. If not, you got it as early as you could, so you couldn't have gotten it anyways.

I honestly couldn't be happier. It is the fastest and smoothest tablet I have ever used, even moreso than the ipad. Finally Android has matured to that level... or the hardware has gotten to where it needs to be
I'll tell ya, the best thing about this tablet is the size. I used to be very down on the 7 inch form factor, but there is something special about it that makes me want to use this thing WAY more than my transformer.
Love this tablet.. can't believe it was only 250$

Lol I laughed at this. When I saw this thread I was like, "noooo this can't be him." Well it was. Lol
Anyways, I wanna know(not trying to steal your thunder ÜBER™, just don't want to start a similar thread here) how strong development is already here. I know it'll get stronger. But what do we have as of now??? Because I want to buy a 16GB N7 too and root it out of the box, but I want to be able to pick from a variety.
I'm also worried about that I'm going to get bored of this device since I have a GNexus. I'm on the same boat as ÜBER™ as turning it into a toy. I also wants this for it's leathery feel(IMO), THE PRICE!!!!! and back pocket friendly design.

If I have helped you.... hit that sexy thanks button. ^_^
I just got mines last night and I cant put it down lol. This is the first tablet ive owned and its the perfect size to me. If only it had a sd card slot. It truly is the perfect companion to carry around. Two thumbs up!!

DO NOT Start there.. that is a link to a toolkit and until you know what it does and can do it manaully i would suggest you keep as far as possible away from it.
Agreed with the previous two posts.. All too often I see people who barely know how the phone even operates and immediately try figuring out how to root it. Use your device as is for a bit. It's a Nexus, you don't get any more of a clean default installation. Why you are using it do as said above, read, read, read, and read more. I'm going my third year of using Nexus devices and I still occasionally revert to unrooted stock just to enjoy the pure and clean AOSP experience. Why? Because it's a damn good experience still right out of the box. :victory:
Enjoy your device and ask as many questions as you need.. Asking isn't a crime. :good:
I think I'm one of the rare ones here who runs a stock N7. I am perfectly happy with it though and don't feel the need to root at all. It does everything I want it to already. For my personal needs, it's perfect.
Just because you're now running Android, doesn't mean you have to root it.

How can I tell if I have the newer one?

Hi,
Got a Nexus 7 tablet for Christmas today. I remember reading back in October or November that Google updated the Nexus 7. I'm not sure what the changes were. How can I tell if I got one of the newer ones, or one of the older ones?
Thanks.

To know which batch your nexus 7 comes from, you need to look on the box it came in. That is where the serial and model numbers are. For example, mine is a C9O.

Yes, there are changes. Asus has done some hardware revisions from batch to batch. No need to frag the guy. Why he wants this info is really none of our business. Its easy enough just to ignore, or give the answer and move on. Our rude answers make xda look bad. Thats just not right, nor the reflection we should be showing.

You just need to stop. Different revisions can have different issues. Maybe the guy wants to be proactive in knowing what to watch for. Maybe he wants to REGISTER it, which he would need the CXO number for. Maybe he wants to know if it is a model known for missing screen screws, or the one known for loose screen screws. Maybe a model that it helps to use screw washers with. There alot of things to be learmed from your batch number. If you would have taken the time to read and understand those particulars in varying batches, this could have been avoided. Therefore, your statement that nothing has changed except that there is no more 8gb, is wrong, and as a result, not helpful in the least.

No other reason to ask such a stupid question.

This is the q&a section. Q&A is short for questions and answers, hence, he asked a question. That is the point to this whole sub forum. The second part is the answers. I understand you confusing the "a" for accusations, but it is answers. I think accusations go in the off topic area. Good luck in there.
The fact remains, your first post contained both an accusation, and incorrect and uninformed information. Speaking of jokes...........

Your incorrect info was saying nothing had changed, other than that the 8gb was no longer available. Fact is, things HAVE changed from batch to batch. Informed owners keep up with those things. I would recommend you google nexus 7 hardware revisions, so that next time you might be better equipped to understand the potential reasoning for the question, and not assume greed is at work. Anyone very familiar with the n7 would look at your respones of calling it a stupid question would immediately identify you as uninformed.

Honestly Dark Jedi, if you have no help to offer to the OP, kindly stop posting and keep your common sense. He has the right to ask. How is it any concern of ours why he wants to know ? If I offer you a cookie which smells funny, and should you ask me what the cookie is made of, should I answer your question or go, "Why do you want to know ? What ? If it's not the best ingredients, you want to throw it away ? In that case I'm not telling. Enjoy it". Honestly, don't understand what you have to gain from doing this to the OP.
@OP : Easiest way I could tell the difference between the old and new Nexus 7 was that the new one had 3G capabilites. So just take a look at your statusbar. If you're talking about the wifi only version, I guess the only difference I could think of is the new 32GB of memory storage.

you learn nothing. so when you run into the issue, youre screwed since you dont know the basics. anyways, doing it the right way is just as easy as using a toolkit. all you need to do(in a nutshell) is fastboot oem unlock, flash a recovery via fastboot, flash either the su binaries or a custom rom in your new recovery, then reboot. nothing difficult. but learning to fastboot and to use the recovery is essential.
