I just got a used TF101 B70 that already had HC 3.2.1 and 8.6.5.21 firmware.
I know that it's still possible to root this tablet but is it even worth it with ICS coming out so soon(hopefully)?
Will I be able to unroot this tablet to get the ICS update?
you won't need to unroot for the update. just do not install any custom kernel's, ROMs,..., just stay STOCKed! ;-)
additionally you can use the rootkeeper, to (hopefully) restore root simply after upgrade to ICS. so, it would even be an advantage, if there is no root-method right after the update.
and btw, who knows, when ICS will really come round the corner...
ICS soon?
ASUS is busy with their newest products and customers and it looks like they have dropped the ASUS Transformer from their efforts. Think about it - how would it benefit ASUS to release ICS for the Transformer? Their business is to make money so they want you to buy the next generation of their product, they already got your money and to get more does not mean upgrading an older model. Where is the unlockable bootloader for the Transformer they promised? Why are they not keeping us up to date on anything happening in the Transofrmer realm? I think it is because there is no news and the Transformer is dead. They certainly do not have a unified corporate statement regarding ICS and their mixed messages on social media websites is only to keep new buyers purchasing the Transofrmer that remain in stock so they can get every last penny out of the product. I would like ASUS, as a company, on their company website, to annouce their plans and until that occurs there are no plans.

Disagree. There are issues with ICS on the prime which they are working to resolve. They have fixed resources. Releasing ICS for the TF101 would most likely only add to the workload. Makes sense to understand the issues with iCS and prime and fix them in the 101 version before it is released. In addition if ASUS dropped their support of the 101 they would have a tough time ever selling another tablet. Dig through the threads and see all the negative recommendations for the manufacturers that failed to update their devices in a reasonable time. These guys are in biz to make money. Alienating a customer base the size of the TF base would not make business sense.

Yes i'd recommend rooting. Even it the Transformer doesn't see an official Android 4.0, i'm sure one of our AWESOME developers will port it over, and do a darn good job of it. And if we don't see Android 4.0, or a port you can always flash a custom OS to give your Tablet that new fresh smell again and over clock it to bring back that youth it once had.
yes dude root what the hell are yo thinking... rooted users may get the damn rom first... and you never know what asus may do to lock your bootloader or whatnot.. so root now and install custom rom... then install custom ics rom... never have to worry bout rooting or locking/unlocking bootloader again... not to mention revolver is the best hc rom in the world right now..
Sent from my Revolver Powered Asus Transformer
If you don't root before the update, you may never be able to root it. Asus has been patching many of the current root methods in their recent updates for the Prime, and you never know what they have up their sleeves. If you want to ensure you can root after the update, you may want to hold off on installing it right away to see what issues may arise, and wait for a dev to release a stock ROM + root package. That way you can safely flash it via CWM and totally circumvent any root blocks that Asus may have created for us.
I'm tempted to root but not install CWM so I can get the OTA update but my worry is I'll break some system file with root and not be able to recover since I won't have CWM installed and I have a B90 device.
If that happens, can you use the stock recovery to recover a broken system?
I have a B90...and used the apk files to root and install CWM. But...if you are patient enough to not root and wait for an OTA...then you may even be patient enough to just root and wait maybe 48 hours (after the OTA drops) at most to get a rooted ICS version...by one of the devs here.

Disagree. They still said that prime doesn't have 3g so for who wants that there is tf101 (their words on prime presentation)...
So a point in favour for who wants an asus, wants ics and wants 3g
I was under the impression that Asus was keeping the TF101 alive as the <$400, 16 GB tablet in order to compete with the cheapest iPad.
It's similar to how Apple has kept the 3GS alive to compete with the budget Android phones.
If you have a B70 or lower, do what you want. When ICS comes out, nvflash and update. If you have a B70 or over, you may want to wait. There's no easy way to get back to stock on a B70 yet.
Why is everyone harping that ASUS will relock their boot loader when they are about to release a tool for the Prime?
ASUS WILL release ICS for the transformer. It seems a lot of people got butt hurt because one PR guy on a foreign Facebook page had issues and said it would come soon, and got their hopes up.
If you think ASUS is going to disappoint 7% of the Android tablet market that they own by not rolling out this update you would be very mistaken. It may be late, but they can't afford not to push it. As stated, they would have big trouble trying to sell another tablet after that.

C'mon man, this ISN'T Samsung we're talking about here.
I'm confident we will get the update. They put on their website that the TF101 will be ICS-upgradeable months ago, which is the reason many people may have chosen to purchase it. Especially during the holiday season. Bad press can effect a company's profits and reputation. ASUS knows this, and will keep their promise.
Jason.. Don't be so damn naive htc said the same thing... And still using there tool it is not a full unlock.. Better root and load custom rom now if you can.... But whatever..

They'll support it at least until the next wave of tablets, Samsung was hit hard and the other companies thrived when Sammy failed to deliver on almost all of their devices and people went crazy over it.
Now they send devices to the CM team before they are even released lol.

That's logic, not naivety. They've put at least hundreds of man hours, and a lot of PR into this update. Dumping it at the last second would be second rate stupid.
Look past other companies and see ASUS. You don't get to be one of the largest manufacturer's in the computer component industry by breaking promises. That's not fanboism, either, it's fact.
You should also checkout their Facebook page. Just a few hours ago they, once again, stated they were working on it, and it should be mid-Febuary. It's all good!

I wouldnt be so quick to put Acer in a pedestal. Not only do they NEVER address their customers, but also have locked and signed bootloaders with no intention of unlocking them. Now, I dont think Asus has been fast or great to their users, but at least they communicate, listen, and are delivering updates way faster than the rest. (Pretty much every honeycomb device is projected to get an ICS update during Q2 or later, Asus is working for a late Q1 update...)
This is ICS related.
I might be wrong, but I thought we had a place for this sort of stuff...

This has never had *anything* to do with upsetting Google. Google couldn't care less if Asus releases for the TF101 tonight. They couldn't care less if they never release at all. Any Google approvals were given when the Prime build was finalized; beyond that Google isn't involved any more. Asus were just trying to make excuses, and Google made an easy scapegoat, because they won't comment.
The lack of truth to Asus' claim to be waiting for Google came when Asus themselves subsequently claimed the delay was down to their own techs being off for Chinese New Year, ie. not waiting for Google at all. Truth be told, the build has almost certainly been ready--at least, in as much as the Prime build was ready--from the same day the Prime build shipped. Asus have just chosen not to release for the TF101, likely initially because they wanted to build hype for the Prime (and "reward" Prime users for spending money more recently), and later likely because they realized a lot of Primes were being bricked, and didn't want to deal with warranty repairs for an even greater number of bricked TF101s, which are in the wild in far greater numbers.
Hence, we sit and wait until Asus fixes the TF201 problems, has sufficiently long to decide they're no longer bricking tablets, twiddles their fingers a bit, and then finally releases the TF101 build that's been available inside Asus all along.
At least, that's my (logical) guess.

Yep! I bet now people will start whining about when ICS is going to be released in their region
Acer ANZ have given a release date for ICS for the A500 on their facebook fan page, and as usual for acer their promises of an april release have turned into more lies, their release date in answer to a question on their page is May 17.
Doesn't matter really, they haven't said no. There's plenty of aftermarket versions that work fine anyway.

Yes! End the lies! MAKE them release the OTA update in April. Whether it's finished or not. Whether it's full of bugs or not. Getting it soon is far more important than getting it right!

The problem people have with dates is that they only look at the date and not the rest of what is said.
The Acer webpage says the date for the A500 update is TBA Mid April.
TBA means To Be Announced mid April.
Seems to me that since it is early April and not mid April, they are ahead of schedule.
But they are guilty of being late in the past.
Still, do not go by Facebook. It is not reliable for Acer announcements.
Acer ANZ is Datacom Manila, a closed group of 64.
Does not sound like an official Acer site to me.
Oh yea, here is the Acer webpage.

This will be my last Acer product until their management changes their priorities.
So far I've been deeply disappointed by the timeliness of their updates. Moto and Asus have already pushed ICS to their hardware and the Asus tabs has vastly superior hardware compared to Acer offerings.
I guess Acer is just not very attuned to their customers' needs and that's disheartening as an owner.
I second this. I listed mine on craigs list today.

Let's see, I bought my A500 in August and it was loaded with 3.0. I quickly got the update to 3.1 and fairly soon received 3.2. What do you want, 5 major OS versions in a years time? Seriously, people... relax. Even if you have to only wait 2 more weeks, you're selling your tablet? I'm calling shenanigans.
Learn patience. A good, bug-free update, especially one with this many changes, is worth the wait. And if you're THAT impatient, root the darned thing and load one of the many ICS versions that many developers have to offer.

If you will be watching the frequency and the increasing quality of the ICS leaks in the Dev section, you can expect the official ics update soon. And if you don't want to wait just install one of the marvelous ics custom roms. The improvement over hc is huge! !

I totally agree. but i was just making note that there are other options. If a company sets itself apart from the others in a way they Support what customers want. Right now that company could Take many customers from the pack. People are sick of devices becoming obsolete and disposable in a year or less. And locked down tighter then FT KNOX. (i live about 10 minutes from there) I can tell its very secure.
As far as locked bootloaders, the vast majority of phone users don't even know of the possibility of modding... let alone have any desire to do it. The same goes for updates. People on sites like this represent the small minority of users. The typical tablet or phone user wakes up one day, looks at their device, sees a box saying there's an update, presses OK and goes on with their lives.
They bought their device based upon the user experience, not some vague hope that some major change will happen... sometime... soon.
Hello everybody, this is my forst post, so be comprehensive...
If someone wants an Acer ICS build there is the latest "leak 1.031" on the Developer section which is very easy to install - download the zip file, rename it to "Update.zip", put it on your extSD and reboot while holding "power" + "vol-".
I never did any mods to my A500 since I bought it, never rooted or so, but lately it was starting to freeze and force close quite a lot so I updated it manually and am very satisfied - running very smooth, web browsing is much faster (using ICS browser+) and everything seems to work perfectly! I'm just saying that it's a very simple way to get stable ICS without doing any complicated things (CWM, root, kernel mods, etc...)
Cheers!

While we wait, I have to wonder if the general number of us were polled as to WHY we want ICS, what the reasons would be? I'd like to have it, but honestly I don't know of any compelling reason aside from the fact that it is something new.
I'll bet once we get it not much time will pass before we are Jonesing for Jelly Bean for the same silly reason.
I'm running Thor's HC ROM on mine, and very happy with that. It runs well and everything works. What more could I realistically ask for? What's ICS supposed to bring us, anyway?

Hello,
I write from Italy and I'm new in this forum. I signed up to share you the petition to ask the Jelly Bean update to Asus for Transformer TF101 after the declarations that it won't be updated.
The petition was published on iPetitions and I would your help in spreading the initiative.
Comments, suggestions and above signatures are well accepted!

Last time I checked, no one from ASUS said the TF101 won't get a JB update. I prefer them not to, judging from the terrible job they did with the ICS update. Already a lot of JB custom roms can be found in development so we won't need ASUS at all.

Asus Italy stated on their Facebook page that right now only the TF201, TF300T and TF700 will get Jelly Bean, while TF101(G)/SL101 won't get the update.
That said, they have been extremely unreliable wrt announcements in the past, so I think a petition is a bit premature

Dear valued ASUS customer,
At ASUS, one of the key commitments we make to our customers is a relentless drive to deliver the best user experience. We constantly strive to achieve this goal through our ‘Design Thinking’ philosophy that includes regular software and firmware updates for our products.
We are pleased to announce that many of our tablet products are scheduled to receive an update to Android 4.1, Jelly Bean. The ASUS Transformer Pad, ASUS Transformer Pad Prime and ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity are all scheduled to receive Android 4.1 updates in the coming months. We will provide further guidance on our expected timeframes for these updates near their release.
We are still investigating Jelly Bean updates for other devices, but we are not in a position to confirm whether any other products will be eligible for an update at the moment.
Thank you for your continued support.

You are right, they have not specifically said that there is no update for it and I really don't care for one. I, along with many others, have had a terrible experience with ICS from ASUS and have been running ROM's for awhile now. I am already rocking JB and have a stable build. I am done with ASUS.

I would prefer a petition that demands the release of all drivers and everything else needed to make roms on our own.
just signed... maybe people with facebook accounts (i dont have one) can post a link to this petition on an ASUS facebook wall to encourage other people to sign.
I'm sorry but do you really care so much about 'official' JB? We have everything we need to make it work from AOSP, there's only a few minor problems that are definitely fixable, and I'm pretty sure we'll fix those sooner than ASUS releases an update. Most ASUS bloat works on AOSP without problems, and feature wise their ROM is only different in toggles and touchpad settings, both of which are very possible. So can someone explain why would they want OFFICIALZ STUFFZ?

We have everything we need to make it work from AOSP, there's only a few minor problems that are definitely fixable, and I'm pretty sure we'll fix those sooner than ASUS releases an update. Most ASUS bloat works on AOSP without problems, and feature wise their ROM is only different in toggles and touchpad settings, both of which are very possible. So can someone explain why would they want OFFICIALZ STUFFZ?

Some people wish to remain "stock", which is understandable. Installing a ROM can be intimidating if they've never done it before.
funny how the xoom got the update today. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2407757,00.asp but the TF101 looks like it will night. For the first time i regret Buy the 32mb tf101 in dec of 2011 after i drop my TF101 16mb and it broke. should went with another company. Asus update to date have been a joke. and know they end support for tf101

And which company would you have gone to? Asus has been supplying updates quite consistently. I wonder what more you would want.
Xoom (wifi only) might have a Jelly Bean update already, but Xoom owners are complaining left and right about the poor quality of this update.

An official update from AUSUS would increase the chance of also getting updater drivers, e.g. NVidia drivers etc.
Also an official build from AUSUS would have everything up and running (if yet possibly still with a few bugs, but lets hope not).

We already have updated drivers from the Xoom OTA. They need some kernel changes but it'll be easy when kernel source drops for Xoom.
Saw this on official facebook page of Asus Russia.

It says "We have great news for owners of Asus tablets! Android 4.1 JellyBean update will be released for all Asus devices currently working on Android 4.0"
Message date is 23rd, November.
Great news , hope its true.
A leak from this Asus Tf101 JellyBean would be enough for us to flash before it even officially release.. hope it true..

I seriously doubt it. This has been an on going theme for the last few months.

I hope it's true as I can't root my tab because my USB is broken :-\

Well, it should be true, since it is published on an official Asus page, but I can not guarantee

Don't believe everything that you read read for crying out loud & from a Russian page at that. If that were the case it would have been out 5 months ago.
A little update: I've just asked if this is an official page and statement, so the answer was yes. They will inform us further, as soon as they get more info regarding updates.
Bad news, the post on the website seems to be taken down
All we need is one solid Rom, everytime a never version of android comes out it lays waste to many unfinished Roms.
There have been several announcements on other web pages saying that TF101 will not get Jelly Bean. To be honest, I don't think that ASUS will maintain our "outdated" model and provide a new firmware version.
I have successfully rooted my device, put RaymanFX CM10 ROM on along with timdurus KAT kernel. My TF101 is now much faster, much more responsive and rock stable. ... maybe you should give it a try.

Unfortunately the post from facebook was deleted, Asus representatives didn't provide any further info on JB update. At this point there are neither official confirmations nor denials regarding updates for TF101
Not a good sign...
Jb on tf101 is better supported here then something from asus anyhow.
I was on the online support chat for Asus NA a couple days ago and asked if there were any further updates expected for the TF101 or is it now unsupported and was told, by a Kyle, that as far as he could see that there was going to be an update to 4.1.1 for the TF101, but there was no official word or date of release yet. He also said that the TF101 was far from being irrelevant. Take it for what it's worth.
I have to say i'm feeling confident in an update as they have been many more confirmations then denials to an update for the TF101. Maybe a Christmas present from Asus.

Exactly. That's what I said too: It may be a christmas surprise. I just don't get why it takes that much for making just a new FW.. I mean, some people like RaymanFX which I guess that he learned everything from Internet can make BETTER FWs than Asus?.. Eh. Anyways. Hope they'll make a better firmware than ICS.

And ofcourse the 4.2 rom.
Also I really hope that asus will bring out JB on tf 101.
