I think that don't need setCPU (or CPU master Pro)
Because I installed cpu spy, it show cpu working at 312MHz is 80% and 832MHz is 11%
May be it's enough smart to exchange between frequency chip max and min.
First of all.... Please dont create question threads in dev section..
Read this thread Questions should not go here
To answer your question... set cpu and cpu spy are apps made for 2 different purposes.. cpu spy gives statistics or info on whats going on cpu... that too on software side..
Set cpu is an app to "set" governors/io schedulers/ cpu freq etc... also it provides info and info is related to hardware side..
So back to thread title.. yes set cpu or any other app which might do same actions as set cpu is needed for any device including duos only when you have a custom kernel which has many features to apply..
I hope this answers your question.. please do create threads in Q & A section for this.. i will request The-Captain to move this thread..

First, thank to nitubhaskar!
Sorry for this,
I've never install setCPU or CPU master,
I only install CPU spy and it's show me that performance. I think my phone auto exchange it (don't need install other app to overclock CPU)
Or maybe that app is installed in kernel?

No apps are installed on kernel...
If you use no frills cpu (free) or set cpu(paid) from play store.. you will get options to use full features of custom kernel.. but without these apps also you can use custom kernel. You wont be use full features.. thats all... so its your choice.. i suggest install no frill cpu then use it and see..

I have just installed setcpu on my Nexus One. Does it have to be open all the time in order to work? Do I have to ignore it in TasKiller? Is it still underclock my CPU even if I kill it?

I ignore it because I use it ondemand, not for performance, I would advise you ignore it seeing it has to run in the background for profiles and for on demand.
As android builds are getting more and more closer to being daily builds, one of the standing issues that remains is battery life.
This thread is where posts concerning How to Save battery should go. NOT Questions, but suggestions. If your suggestion is one to look into, it will be added to the OP.
UPDATE: You can now use ALL GOVERNORS For the CPU! (Read more to find out how) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SetCPU
SetCPU, is an app more commonly used for over/under clocking devices.
This short tutorial will show you how you get the app,
get it running, and of course save battery!
*YOU NEED A ROOTFS.IMG THAT GRANTS YOU ROOT ACCESS!*
1. Get SetCPU
A. Download it from *HERE*. (The only XDA thread I could find for it)
OR
B. Support this great application and get it from the Android market by searching for SetCPU.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
2. Getting the App working
1. Once you have the application installed, launch it from your drawer and either grant it Root Permissions or it may auto-configure.
2. Hit Auto Detect Speeds.
3. It should show you the speeds your device it currently running at, now move over to [Profiles] and click Enable and if you want click on Notification.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
3. Make your profiles
1. Sleep Profile - 384 Max/245 Min- Interactive setting
(It may seem high, but this keeps it so that your device wakes up quickly)
2. Battery < 30
Max 614/460 Min- Interactive/Conservative Setting
*Try out the SetCPU Widget!*
If you have any personal settings that you think might be better than these please do post!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
UPDATE 9/15 ALL CPU Governors!
To use the modules use this kernel built from the GIT, and hit auto detect speeds on SetCPU again. Under the main tab choose Your preferred setting..
You can find what all the the kernels differ in in the further pages of this thread, I will update OP later.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Advanced Tab
20000 Sampling Rate
30-50 Up Threshold (THIS IS THE KEY: This means when your CPU load hits 30%, it will scale up the mhz. If the phone still responds too slow for your taste, set this lower)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=777921
Check Set on Boot (And Apply)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Turning off Background Services and Adjusting Brightness
Things like Bluetooth, WiFi, Sync, GPS, and excessive brightness can really kill your battery.
A quick way to manage these settings is to hold down to add a widget on your home screen and choose [Power Widget].
This stock widget allows you to quickly see the service's your using, and the farthest one to your right allows you to switch between four brightness settings.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Using that new kernel link provided, you'll get a nice boost in standby time too! Enjoy!
Additional battery saving tips:
* Don't use a live wallpapers
* Turn off 3G connectivity (Eclair-based ROMS need apps like APNDroid to do so)
* Turn off Background-enabled data transfers in the Sync page.
the app screebl is a battery saver for whenever you have your screen on.
MOD EDIT:
Screebl Pro is a PAID FOR APP..
Link deleted and warning given please do not post warez in the future.
Mark.
Is that a Paid application from the Market? If so it is warez. (Big No-No)

Strange, try the new froyo build by Darkstone.

Yeah, I'm using SetCPU 2.01 with Dan's v1 vanilla froyo fine. When set to use "ondemand" CPU Governor and Autodetect speeds, getting much better battery life - it's only dropping ~1% every hour now EDIT: when idle, of course

Happy to help!
Next thing (when I get around to it) is probably to try out the Conservative CPU Governor module... that will correctly scale CPU power according to load (ie. 245mhz => 384, etc) instead of like On Demand, where it jumps from 245mhz => 998mhz => lower....
ATK

Use Taskiller. Red Icon in the market. Free App is the exact same as the paid one. Kills tasks as well but detects tasks that ATK cant. Includes features like End apps once screen turns off and kill all apps 10sec's after boot. Great App IMO.
I've found out that JuiceDefender does a good job as well. If you buy the extension (UltraDefender?) it also has a CPU governer module which regulates your CPU speed based on usage.

No need to pay - as I mentioned before, the "conservative" cpu governor module that is freely available (do a search!) will do exactly what you mentioned when used with SetCPU.
hello everyone
i have a quick question
is it true i shouldn't use setvsel with CM7?because i just read that in the FAQ thread for CM7 here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1065798
and i need setvsel because i use it to undervolting and also i don't to overclock my cpu to 1Ghz since 800mhz can handle all the games i play and im getting 1900-2100 score in quadrant on stock cpu speed
and if i can't use it or shouldn't what program should i use ??since cpu settings in cm settings doesn't include undervolting
(although i've been use it on CM7 rom for 3 days now and i didn't have any trouble)
thanx in advance
appreciate your help guys
Hi there,
CM7 RC0 has the CPU clock speeds & Vsel in the bootmenu where you can overclock, undervolt, change the governor etc.
If you reboot your phone & go into the bootmenu when the blue led comes on then you can access the overclock menu.
There's more info in Quarx's thread in the dev forum

From what I've read in the relevant threads about CM7 many people are saying not use it.
I used it in froyo but since flashing CM7 RC0 I only use the bootmenu for CPU settings.

I used the same settings that peetr_ used in the post I've linked to above. It uses the smartass governor.
It appears that there's different settings depending upon which governor is selected:
eg; for the smartass governor then in the overclock settings list the settings that start with _smt are relevant,
interactive governor _int,
ondemand governor _ond, etc.
Think that's how it works

No problem pleased I could help
I left the bootmenu cpu frequencies as to what they were but undervolted them slightly.
300/22, 600/34, 1000/54 - I tried many settings using setvsel when running froyo so I know these work fine for me.
As for the other settings I just used those that peetr_ posted for the smartass governor & it seems to run nicely. Haven't had any issues yet

btw...when i used the values in the post you gave me the phone was running without any issues but if you open setvsel and looked at the cpu it keeps changing from 300 to 1000 even if you are not doing anything but if you used the ondemand scale governor you will notice that if you are not doing anything the value stays 300mhz so im not sure that smartass is a good governor after all...or maybe its just me
anyways i think i will keep the settings like this:
[email protected]
[email protected]
[email protected]
also change the other values in menu like this(i think you must change them according to the values you gave your cpu in the 3 vsels):
smt_min:30
smt_max:80(although i suspect this one should be 100 but since the user in the thread you gave kept it 80 im keeping it 80 )
smt_awake:300000
smt_sleep_max:300000
smt_up_min:1000000
smt__wakeup:1000000
smt_ramp:300000
ond_up_threshold:75
what do you think of these values ?
and also...can you tell my your temp in normal state and in after heavy use ?i think mine stays hot
oh and btw could you provide me with a link for the youtube apk you are using i can't seem to find a one that works

My cpu sometimes jumped from 300-1000 when I used setvsel on froyo.
Temperature wise it seems to be running similar if not slightly cooler than when on froyo. Now the hottest I have seen battery temp is 35C but it is mostly much cooler than that.

Here's what i've come up with, using google (lets correct them, if some are wrong) :
con_up_threshold: [80] # system load in % above which increases the CPU frequency?
con_down_threshold: [20] # system load in % above which drops the CPU frequency?
con_freq_step: [5] # frequency step?
con_sampling_rate: [160000] # interval (in milliseconds) between polls of the system. In fact, the intervals between changes of CPU frequency? Times in 160 seconds?
int_min_sampling_rate: [50000] # minimal interval (in milliseconds) between polls of the system. In fact, the intervals between changes of CPU frequency? Every 50 seconds?
ond_up_threshold: [86] # CPU in % above which increases the frequency of the processor.
ond_sampling_rate: [50000] # second? interval (in milliseconds) between polls of the system. In fact, the intervals between changes of CPU frequency? Every 50 seconds?
smt_min_cpu_load: [40] # CPU usage in % in achieving a reduced frequency of the processor
smt_max_cpu_load: [85] # CPU in % above which increases the CPU frequency
smt_awake_min_freq: [30000] # The minimum frequency of waking up?
smt_sleep_max_freq: [30000] # CPU frequency during sleep?
smt_up_min_freq: [1200000] # The minimal jump. so default made the cpu jump every time to max speed
smt_wakeup_freq: [1200000] # The frequency of waking up. It is important to not lose calls.

i don't know...really..i can't seem to relate what are the values for with the available governors
my only problem with smartass governor that even if im not using the cpu the values keep changing between 300mhz-1000ghz but when im using on demand if im not doing anything with the phone the cpu stays at 300mhz but when i start using the phone(moving the screen up and down for example)the values changes to 1000ghz and when i stop the values goes back to 300mhz that's why im using on demand...but again it might be just my cpu
looks like it requires to dig more in the differences between each governor
anyway i read in the latest post in CM7 DEV thread that some people is actually using setvsel so i opened my boot menu, and went to overclock, selected set default, reboted, and installed setvsel and applied these values:
20/300
33/600
47/800
up_therhold:75
oh and btw...how's your battery life ?
Dudes, so please, quick answer:
Use SetVsel - no
use build in "overclock" settings in CM7 RC0 - yes?
Any one using CM7 RC0 bootmenu> Overclocking?
There are more values than in peters thread.
Please advise with all info/numbers according to present in overclocking bootmenu 0.8.6 values.

Yes I've got CM7 RC0 & using the bootmenu overclock.
There's many values in the menu as it depends upon which governor you have set it to so only those values relevant to that governor will be used.
For instance on Smartass governor - the values starting with _smt will apply

Either AnTuTu (I use on my tab) or SetCpu (I use on my phone) are fine for me. If you want to run profiles, you will need to get the paid version. (set your cpu speed based on battery remaining).
way to test out paid apps, buy if you like it
Google this "SetCPU for Root Users 2.2.4.apk"
Download 1st post from google.
in the future... if you see a update in "Market - My Apps" get new version # from {description} and google it.
After testing a Paid App, if you like it, buy it.
Right, Now Im using SetCPU (paid app), but nothing happening I put Max and Min both to 1000 MHZ but nothing happening it not overclocking.
Is there some kind of setting i need to do under Advanced tab?
OCing
In order to overclock, you will need a custom kernal. Typically factory roms that are not mass produced on multiple devices from the same company will have a kernal that will only allow the cpu to sit in specific frequencies. Without a custom kernal setcpu, or another oc app will only let you change the cpu settings between the factory kernal clock speeds. hope this helped.

Thanks where i can get good kernal Rom. Right now im using
{ROM 3.2.1}{The Collective}Epiphany - 1.11.12
you should Read His Thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1439351 (only 8 pages till end)
pay attention to Changing Kernel Q+A
If you still don't know ask there (about OC up to 1.5, 1.6 ability)
for HC v3.2+, I like "2.6.36.4-thor-V3.9r3" Kernel
^^But that doesn't mean it will work.^^
Remember, if you use a different kernel, it will most likely affect some apps and functions.
If you re-post and say, something doesn't work, They'll probably say something like "I don't know about that, i don't use that kernel"
If you're comfortable (and have read enough), Experiment a little, knowing you can always go back to Backup ROM.
All ROMS (99%+) will flash thier proper Kernels from Re-do
Just saying, OC up to 1.5 is good, but I'm not sure about 1.6 or 1.7
Anyone tried that yet?
Hey Guys,
i have a question
Well how you mod your kernel e.g Render Kernel for more battery ?
Cause i can flast the render Kernel but didn't have a clue what i need to change in the Kernel settings with programms like synapse and so...
Also i didn't find a tutorial for moding the settings of a kernel
It would be nice if some one would provide me the basics of that cause as i say above i'm a noob in moding a kernel due to the fact that i didn't ever done it.
Thanks
If you dont know anything about setting parameter in Synapse then i suggest you just set up max speed of cpu not lower then 1.7Ghz and min speed above 192Mhz. For more battery saving go to undervolt tab and put -25mv for overall step. NEVER OVERVOLT it unless you know what youre doing.
