[Q] Multiple Copies of Fields in Some Contacts in People App - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This problem is limited to only a handful of my contacts in the native or built-in People App. In those few cases some fields show multiple replications of addresses ( even obsolete ones), nicknames etc. When you edit the record, you can see multiple entries for that person one after the other. You can delete the spurious fields but later when you return to that contact they have all returned. It seems Android Nexus 7 OS has merged multiple instances of a contact but kept the identical values in each field ( even obsolete deleted ones) rather than eliminating redundant ones and those explicitly deleted. Any idea how to permanently resolve this?

I think you can delete them from your google account on the web. I had about 150 contacts on my phone and where all duplicated 5 times.

Here ye go mate. Just go to this link and delete what ever contacts you want. Once done re sync your contacts. You may have to clear data from the people app and the re sync

People app question.

For some reason only a very small number of my contacts appear in my People app. If I open Gmail I have over 50 entries, but only about 10 are listed in my People app. Any idea how to get everyone to show up in my People app?
Thanks!

When in doubt, give the device a reboot. If that doesn't work, log into Gmail and reset the sync contacts part (take the tick off that, save it, go back in and re-enable). If these two things don't work, I'm out of ideas.

Exchange Contacts NOT syncing!

I set up the exchange server (as I did on many other Android devices before)and it is not syncing contacts at all! Emails and calendar did sync but not the contacts.

I was just curious if you found a fix for this? I just purchased a Nexus 4 & 10; both sync my email & calendar fine from exchange 2010 - but none of my contacts are being pulled in.
No I didn't find a permanent solution. What I did was download a third party software (think it was touchdown) trial and once my contacts were synced I moved them to phone contacts and un installed the software.

Gotcha, and thanks for the reply! I did something similar; in Outlook I exported all of my contacts to a CSV file, then on the gmail website I went to contacts and imported them and they came through to my phone fine - just fyi if anyone else reads this thread.
Kind of annoying to have to go round about that way; but hopefully it will get fixed in a future update and I can delete all of my work contacts from my personal gmail account.
FYI, I've called google tech support and they've elevated my case to a developer that is supposed to send me an email - I'll post hear if they actually tell me something usefull.
But we shouldn't have to do that though (I mean importing our contacts). We use Exchange in the workplace, and to be honest they wouldn't be happy if I copied the contacts to my personal account. This worked on other Android phones (One S, Nexus S etc) but for some reason just doesn't work on devices with Unified Storage (Nexus 4/7)
I thought the 4.2.2 update would solve this but unfortunately not. It's a shame because the Nexus was supposed to be a solid phone but all it's doing is losing my trust.
Please note that mine is now working after a security update o kosek the exchange server. We use exchange 2007. I can get you the technical details of it might help you.

I noticed that it didn't prompt me to allow device administrator until I exited and reopened email. And it won't let me do anything until that happens. Are you able to send a test email? If you can send email it should grab the contacts automatically. Also obviously check the settings in settings>>account settings>>corporate(or whatever yours is called) and maybe double check the server settings.

Also if your server is on your LAN it helps to be connected to the WiFi during set up.
You can always remove the account and re add it.

Is there a fix for this bug? I just got a Nexus 4 and I can't sync my contacts. My old phone doesn't take the micro sim, so I can't switch back.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Ryan
Google Can't / Won't Help
From Google Support phone call:
Initially they told me to type my contacts in one at a time into the phone. Then they told me the following.
"We're unable to describe how to setup email on your android device, that's beyond our capabilities. You can go to this site to get information on setting up GMail via IMAP (not what I was asking for). If that isn't what you need there's nothing we can do for you and we'll have to have you return it." ... "Yes you'll be responsible for shipping"
I've been running Android on a variety of devices dating back to 2.2. I've never had any problems syncing my exchange contacts before. This is REALLY annoying.

Ryan,
I was able to fix this problem. I honestly don't remember exactly how it was done but I found the solution on XDA itself. Sorry I can't be of more help.

I had this issue ages ago but was fixed with the Android update. Way before 4.3 was released. Are you sure you're fully up to date?

Can't sync contacts ? Tips ?

As title says , contacts won't sync , everything else does , im running CM 10.1 and I have 2 Google accounts on my nex. My secondary Google account has everything off except for emails being synced . not sure what the problem is. Last time it synced was may 22nd (as it says in the sync screen)

Wipe the data for contacts storage under all applications. Keep in mind this will permanently erase any contact info not synced to Google's servers. Then, be patient while the device redownloads all of your contacts.
I had this issue once and this fixed it.

Use my phone explorer... Google sync screws up contacts with similar second names. For eg. John Smith and Jason Smith will be grouped under Smith. J... I had a lot of confusion.. Then I bumped into mpe.. Its simple.. Its straight forward... But u need a laptop or a comp(which I assume u do) try it.. U will not regret it..

Combine whatsapp and stock messaging app

Hi I'm trying to find a way to combine our stock messaging app and whatsapp,
If anyone has a way to do this please comment as this one is bugging me
Sent from my Nexus 4
This would be a lot harder than you imagine.
Firstly you have to find a way of merging the 2 sqlite databases for smsmms and whatsapp messages.
And even then you would have to rewrite both telephonyprovider and the whatsapp app itself to write new messages into both databases.
Actually giving it more thought you could symlink /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db and /data/data/com.whatsapp/databases/msgstore.db to a new database that you would have to create with all the relevant fields.
But still you would have to rewrite the messaging app to get it to display both content.
I would still be stumped on how you would even go about replying via whatsapp through the messaging app though.
And that would likely be the easiest way. As there is very little chance that you could modify anything directly with whatsapp because there are no sources to work with

Actually I'm overcomplicating it again.
It would probably just be a rewrite of the messaging app.
Changing it's data sources to take both it's own database and the whatsapp database. But still you would have the problem of replying
And the issue of matching the whatsapp contact IDs with your phone contacts

Facebook notifications not working

Facebook push notifications aren't coming through on my phone only on my Facebook account, if I login on another account they work fine. I've tried to logout, login, reinstall facebook, clear data/cache, turned off platforms, turned off and on notifications, restarted my phone several times, cleared all online sessions. What do, halp plz
Only on your account?
are you running OOS? if so try disabling and enabling notification access in Privacy settings.(I guess)
I'm on SGS5 and I know this isn't the thread for my phone, but I'm at my wits end and want a solution. I'm sure it's not the phone, but the Facebook account itself.
The deactivate/reactivate didn't work for me on my main account that isn't getting push notifications. Funny thing is I wanted to see if it was just the app or the account, so I made a new Facebook account to test the push notifications on that. Push notifications for the app work with the test account, but not with my daily main account (same phone, same app on phone). I have tried everything under the sun. I've tried the BB thing, turned platform thing off, uninstall/reinstall, cleared cache and data, removed every attached app, literally everything I can think of and/or find online. I think something is not allowing my main account to receive push notifications, like they're being sent to an old phone (which there is no other devices logged in) or some chrome extension or app/program I attached to my Facebook has ****ed it all up. I haven't had push notifications in probably probably 3 years, on my SGS2 and nothing on my SGS5 I got 2 years ago... Sorry for ranting, but I just wish it would work. Do you think my main Facebook account is attached to a very Old Android Device ID?

Mine started working again out of nowhere. I didn't do anything I just left it like that and one day I woke up and I had facebook notifications. It is probably a problem with Facebook itself, the only option is probably to wait it out

Facebook application is kind of headache. It didn't accept previous version of Oxygen OS. They finally worked it out. It is application's problem. Try installing previous versions. It should work in that way.

It's not the app, it's the account. I know this because I created a new account and tested the push notifications on that account. The push notifications work on the test account, but not my main account. Same app, phone and settings throughout Facebook. One thing I did notice was on the test account, the Facebook ID (example: [email protected]) is greyed out under primary account with my email selected as primary. Where as on my main account, it's just my email under primary.

I have the exact same problem as you, I've also tried everything and nothing has worked, and I did the same experiment with another account and the push notifications worked with that other account, but nothing with mine.
I'm honestly very frustrated 'cause I can't find the reason for all this and no one seems to know what's causing it. I'm thinking that it may have something to do with some extension I installed in the past or something like that, but I really have no idea, I'm going nuts over this, specially when other people say they were able to solve it by doing this or that, but I've also done this and that and nothing works.

Reinstalling or uninstalling the Extension fixed the push notifications for your acct? I uninstalled the extension a LONG time ago, and cleared all connected apps and what not. I remember the old version had you actually connect it to your Facebook by signing in, but I could never "sign-out" and I did uninstall and the notifications never came back. The options page is just blank when I go to it > chrome-extension://gdalhedleemkkdjddjgfjmcnbpejpapp/options.html
