Does anyone know if Freedompop data service (bolt or photon) is compatible with the Nexus 7 tablet? I though about using the bolt usb stick with the OTG cable and the nexus media importer app (or another app) but I am skeptical....

I've used the Photon with the Nexus 7 just fine.
Frank
I got the bolt to work on my Nexus out of the "box" (actually those sealed plastic form) but then I got an OTA for 4.1.2 so being stupid I went and click ok and now I'm trying to go back. Not sure what happened. Was rooted, still rooted. It looked like to went into a recovery loop. Out of the loop and back to 4.1.1 per my setting but it's squirrelly and no more freedompop and my stickmount is acting funny.
Tmo has also followed freedompop's lead [offering free, limited data for tablets] if you have one of the fancy variety [w/ sim port]

I have neither device... but if I understand right, you have to have the device's NFC chips right near each other to do this. If this is true, did you do that? (The N7's NFC chip is around the X in Nexus if I heard right).
I haven't gotten mine to work, I'm not sure if its my tablet or phone but I tried it with my phone recently to my moms galaxy nexus and it worked. I know there's sweet spot on the tablet but I've tried everywhere and I can't get it so idk.

I have the galaxy Nexus with rooted jelly bean and Nexus 7 with stock jelly bean. NFC works flawlessly. Are you tapping it right? The NFC chip is on the battery of the galaxy Nexus, do you have any third party battery that might not have NFC? If you don't, tap where the battery is onto the top back portion of the Nexus 7.

The NFC on the Gnex is on the battery and on the N7 it's around the "X" in "Nexus" on the back. Place them together in these spots and it should work.

I finally got it to work, I think it's where I was placing it I guess, I tried all over before but guess I found the sweet spot.

It's in and above the NEXUS logo. See page 97 in the guide book.

I have two Nexus 7 (one 8gb) and one Nexus Galaxy.
All are stock ROMs as of this posting.
The N7s NFC work between each other flawlessly and effortlessly. No fudging around looking for the NFC.
Neither N7 can do an NFC exchange with the Nexus Galaxy.
Both N7s take a significant amount of futzing around to get the initial NFC buzz and tone. Neither will actually start an NFC transfer to the NG.
Inverse is true.

transfer of files using beam is new to jelly bean. It works fine using a galaxy nexus and a nexus 7 both running jelly bean (I've transferred photos without issue) using Bluetooth and SNEP.

I have both the Gnex and the N7. I was able to transfer a picture from my phone to the tablet using NFC.
from my galaxy s3 to the n7 i get:
NEW TAG COLLECTED- text/directshareerror
from n7 to gs3 more luck. IF the app is not on the phone it sends me to play store, but for photos it keeps saying the gs3 wont accept large files... ITs pretty hit or miss... more miss then hit
good advice

I also own a Galaxy Nexus and a Nexus 7. Like you had said i held my galaxy up to the X on the back of my nexus and it worked. It seems a little touchy, i have to try it a couple time before the "touch to beam" screen comes on. Does anyone know what things Beam is compatible with, ive only been able to beam webpages and google play app pages so far.
Works fine between my Galaxy Nexus and N7. My GNex is on JRO03O , the N7 is stock rooted.
As others have said make sure you put the battery of the phone up to the "Nexus" on the back of the tab it will say touch to beam when you're in the right spot.
When you first unwrap your tablet, there is a rectangle box where they lable NFC behind the tablet, tap that spot, and I do have both devices.
Beamed from my Grouper
Well i cant use mine. I have the nexus 7 and a gs3.
They find each other, the transfer bar shows up on the galaxy but nothing more. The transfer never really starts and after a while it shows transfer fail.
Weird

So I'm sitting here with my nexus 4 disappointed that otg is NOT working even though it is advertised and in the guide book it says it is a feature... Was also thinking about picking up a nexus 10.
Can anyone confirm otg working without needing root for the N10? On the phone it isn't a huge deal-breaker, but on the tablet it would absolutely be a must for me. Thanks!
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
With nexus media importer, without root, it works, but only read permissions, you can't write. Btw, some people got an otg cable and say they can't get it to work, but that's because of the cable.
Damn only read? I guess that's fine for videos, write would be nice for my emulators though
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
HAve you got an OTG cable?
If you root your device you can get write, but as said read should work fine.
Yeah I have a cable. It's confirmed to work with my dad's SGS3 and my sisters SGS2

Root on nexus 10 is as easy as double click an icon and it auto-roots (with superboot). You don't even need to unlock the bootloader, so you might want to do that.
alrighty I'll probably pick up a 16gig version then since I wont have to carry videos around on the device itself. Now just to decide if i truly wanna shell out 400 bucks haha

I think you are mistaken there ...
From the superboot thread ..
Note: If you are using a retail device, you may need to unlock the bootloader first, using './fastboot-windows oem unlock' (or the appropriate version for your machine, included in this zip). Note that the OEM unlock sequence wipes your device, so consider doing an 'adb backup' beforehand if required!

Anyone know which OTG cable works with both the nexus 10 and the HTC EVO LTE phone? I would like to be able to read and write to my 16 gb memory stick. Both of my devices are rooted..

Is there a similar one for Nexus 7?
I bought my Nexus 7 when it just came out, and I don't want to spend more just to get the 3G version...
I have seen anything like that.
Get a 3g USB dongle and otg cable, it should work. There are couple of threads about this already, have a look around.
The only way I can imagine such a case is such dongle, just packed into mass of silicone to fit the n7, and that I have never seen, even market for that isn't big enough to be worth developing.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Or perhaps a portable hotspot? I'd love if yourkarma.com was available in my area, unfortunately it's not.
Just like the microsd but with 3g. But a hotspot should be better, easier and more battery friendly

Can we use usb gprs gsm modem
To make/recieve calls and sms ?
I'm probably going to go back to stock 4.3 from CM 10.2 due to a few small annoyances that are not germane to this question. The one thing that's stopping me, however, is tethering. I'm on T-Mo, $30 pre-paid. With CM 10.2 tethering my Nexus 7 to it just plain works using the integrated tethering app. No need for PDANet, or anything like that. I don't consume that much data with my N7 like that, just for Google Maps and streaming my music in the car now and then. I've got my N7 mounted using a surprisingly good $40 CD-slot mounting bracket in my car and it makes a great GPS and audio center in my car.
So, all that being said, if I revert back to rooted stock, will the small amount of tethering I do with my N7 be transparent to T-Mo, as it appears to be with CM 10.2?
Thanks a bunch!

I might be wrong on this but i am pretty sure T-Mobile can't tell if you are tethering to a Nexus 7. Both show up as mobile devices on their network when they look at traffic and both show up as Androids. When you tether to a laptop, then they can tell because you use a windows version of chrome.
Just an FYI, reverted back to stock/rooted today, LTE enabled on TMo and the above posting is correct. The N7 tethers just fine!

I have the galaxy tab 4 10.1 installed in the dash of my truck. I need to be able to charge and use USB otg at the same time. Is there any way to do this? I was able to use a USB otg Y cable to do this with my old nexus 7 bit it doesn't work on this tablet. I've tried googling for answers bit have found anything.

Just thought I would share what I found. Not sure if I will get in trouble for this but if you go to bestbuy's website and paste this at the end
site/samsung-usb-connection-kit/2837365.p?id=1218363393359&skuId=2837365
It brings you to a link of a usb host piece that is compatible with all samsung devices. I am thinking of buying one to test it out and would be happy to report back if it does work.
I bought the that Meditato posted. I can confirm that it works. Only prob I ran into tho is when removing the power and plugging it back in, the keyboard connected/disconnected flashes back and fourth. The keyboard does work while its doing that...
