Important question about Nexus 7 tablet UI?
I know there is a "mod" about density changes to make it look like a tablet but is it really like a tablet OS. I mean that does apps that are ment to tablets work on that like for example an app called Elisa viihde (it´s only for tablets).
I would like to buy nexus 7 but I want a "real tablet".
The Nexus 7 uses a new hybrid tablet UI, as you've probably noticed, the homescreen is larger and the notification bar does not take up the whole screen.
only 7" tablets are going to use this UI, and it's up to the app developers to tell the app to use the tablet UI or the phone UI.
For example, during the keynote, Google showed the Google+, Youtube, and Gmail apps.
Youtube loaded the phone version. Google+ and Gmail loaded the tablet version.
So most likely the developer has to add into his app to enable support for this new UI/Screen size to use the tablet UI. Otherwise it will probably default to the phone, and it's possible that tablet only apps won't work.
Maybe you'll get lucky and someone with an I/O version can test that app for you. Otherwise feel free to send me a message in a couple weeks when mine comes in and i'll test it for you.
If it doesn't work, you can always email the dev asking them to enable support for 7" JB and your device. And sometimes you can extract the APK and instal it and then it will work. People did that with Photoshop Touch and the NFL tablet app and got them to work on the galaxy nexus and galaxy note.
Okay thanks i'll see.
I have also thought about a transformer infinity...

I have not watched the keynote as of yet, but from all the reviews I have seen, the youtube app is all new and obviously not formatted for any smaller than an 7" screen
There is a write up on the main xda page today, looks simple. It will be one of the first things I do when mine arrives.

Yea I know about that density thing.
One thing to neok44 I just saw that you can't test that app unless you live in Finland and have that "account" which costs, but thanks anyways.
In Finland here I saw the nexus 7 appeared in one store as a preorder thing as a US version but it costs 450€ that makes me think do I really want that

Has anyone compared the Nexus 7 to the Galaxy Tab 7.7? The Tab 7.7 is just about the perfect density for me.
I played with a Toshiba Excite 7.7 and they have the density too high for me. (Widgets are huge on the screen and there isn't much screen real estate.) That was one of the few things I didn't like about the device.

You could have asked this in my thread , but yes when you change the dpi it causes the nexus 7 to support all tablet apps even the one you said. Changing the dpi isn't changing the looks it changes how the Nexus 7 operates. Theres some con in this with a changed dpi, apps that run specifically for the phone may not run on the Nexus 7 in tablet ui. If the Nexus 7 is in its original 7inchphablet ui it runs both phones apps and tablet apps pretty smoothly. This can be fixed on the tablet ui just by editing the market to recognize the nexus 7 in the more compatible dpi. I'll see if i can do this after work.

As an app dev, I know that the play store asks about what screens o
It an app can work on. And will only be available in the market for those screens. If you properly change your tablet to tablet UI, the market will know it is a tablet and offer you tablet apps.

Ok im sorry for the seemingly obvious question, but am i to understand that because of this in my opinion crazy decision to make this phablet UI, if i want it to work in the tablet UI mode i have to take my new tablet and lower the screens density, the exact density that is one of the main points that attracted me to it, is there no way to enable the UI without lowering the quality? This is irking me so much because im not a developer, no where near so im actually having to study this and put a bit of thought into this whole deal and the number of changes i will have to make upon recieving this tablet just to make it what i feel like it should have been to begin with are getting to be numerous. Thanks guys sorry for the rant
I'm waiting on buying a Nexus 7 but I'm unsure. Does anyone know if SuperNote works well on the Nexus 7?
The bottom toolbar is cut off and I got a rogue force close after about 10 minutes , but it's mostly functional.
You are talking about the Asus app right?

I ripped v1.51 from my TF101 and it works fine. It doesnt seem to show the bottom 5 buttons on the nexus like but you can get around that by enabling the 'gesture backspace' option, or by clicking the keyboard button. :good: I'd imagine Asus might perhaps include a customised version of this in a future update.
Yea, I'm referring to the ASUS app. I got to play with it at BestBuy yesterday and it was pretty good. I was hoping to get a Galaxy Note 10.1 for school but it appears to be vaporware as of now. The N7+SuperNote would be a nice touch though.
It works perfectly if you change your DPI to 160.

If you like SuperNote but the lack of bottom buttons is a problem (and you're not willing root and try a fix), check out FreeNote. It's the closest alternative and a great app, but personally I still prefer SuperNote.
Thanks for posting those links. The link to supernote is version 1.4 and I have 1.5.

I'm sure most of you know but changing your DPI will cause you to have apps not show in the market

Could you give us some examples of apps not working?
Hi, this is my first time posting. There are some apps I want to install on my Nexus 7 (mostly games), but when I go to the Google Play site and select one of them it says, "This app is incompatible with your Asus Nexus 7." Is there an easy solution for this? Does Google play to fix this in an upcoming release of Android OS? I am running the stock Jelly Bean. I saw some threads mention you can install the apps from the package file if you can access it on another Android device, but that isn't an option for me. Also I'd prefer a solution that doesn't involve rooting the phone and installing a custom ROM. One thread mentioned doing this so you could change the UI mode, but they didn't say if this fixed the problem with Google Play not letting them install certain apps. If there is no other solution is anyone able to confirm that rooting the phone and changing the UI mode fixed the problem? I've never rooted a device before.
Yeah I can't get Antutu Benchmark, what the hell.
I think its problem with app requesting permission to things that don't exist on nexus.
Example would be in line (camera) the back one.

I, too, am on the same boat.
Just purchased my Nexus 7 a few days ago, non-rooted.
Trying to stock up on apps. So far, everything has been fine and dandy. I figured out to sideload programs (Flash, more specifically), but now I've run into a problem where I'm trying to install the Kijiji Canada App, but it says the Application is incompatible on the Nexus 7. I've searched for an APK for the Kijiji App, to no avail.
Is rooting my only option? I can't see features that the app would need that isn't compatible on my Nexus 7.... as it's just a classified searching program from eBay.
Thanks for your time.
if you have root, change these lines in your build.prop file to this..
ro.product.model=Nexus 7
ro.product.brand=Google
ro.product.name=nakasi

Not sure how that would be the reason behind it...
Since Apps that do not access things such as the "inline camera" are being listed as not compatible..
Aside from the Back Camera, what is missing thats not missing from other devices? MicroSD? My Galaxy Nexus doesn't have a MicroSD slot, but I'm able to download the app to it, but not my Nexus 7. (example: 80% of the EA Games - Madden12 most of all)

It's one of the reasons. Tablet v phone layout, dpi and JB are amongst the many other reasons.
If you have access another Android device you can download the incompatible app to that
device (if it's compatible, obv) from the play store and use APK Extractor to extract the .apk
Then install it to the N7. You can at least suck it and see if the app works or why it won't.

I have an Evo 4G (rooted with CM7). What values do I need to type to make it compatible with apps on the market. Almost none of my apps are compatible and I can't always find APK files.
Here is the error: This app is incompatible with your Sprint HTC PC36100.
This thread says it has to do with screen density: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1272510
I have changed mine so I'm going to try that.

I fixed it and wrote a big long guide explaining how, but it won't let me post it because I haven't posted enough in the forum.
This was the case with ebuddy xms, so I copied the apk from my SIII and installed without problems. I think it isnt compatible because the nexus doesnt have a camera. It feels like google could have solved this in an easy way of some sorts.

It has nothing to do with being unlocked/rooted. The devs of those apps have decided that the Nexus 7 lacks the necessary hardware to run the apps, specifically a front-facing camera.

I've been downloading the apps to my gnex then using titanium backup to send the backup through dropbox. It's sucks, but that seems to be the easiest way for me.
320dpi is too big for my tastes.
I prefer 268dpi for more densely packed info while keeping ui elements close to center.
But! Whenever I want to search for apps, I need to set dpi to 320, reboot, clear market data and then open it to shop as I please.
Is there any workaround I'm missing? Anyway to keep a custom dpi while still keeping compatibility?
Please and thank you.

Could you elaborate on the second method? Is there any way to do it without a modded play store app?
When I Google, all I'm finding are results to change product/device name so other devices can have same compatibility as Nexus devices.
