I am a noob and had someone else install supersu root a few months ago because I dunno how to do it. I just upgraded to android 4.1.2 which uninstalled supersu, busybox etc. How do I reinstall root?
Get Wugfresh Nexus Root Toolkit 1.5.4 (if you have a Windows PC). It does it all for you with a nice easy on-screen menu.

I tried using Nexus toolkit 1.5.4 to re-root after OTA 4.1.2 and it failed to root, it won't even install BusyBox even though it says its successful. Not sure how to get root back without a nuke and pave.
I'm sure the 4.1.2 root problem has been fixed for the nexus 7, and I don't wanna seem snobby, but the site's search function isn't the most helpful for me and all Google does is just give me results to threads of users having the same problem. does anyone have the link to the thread I need to re-root my nexus 7?

i know there's a thread dedicated to it but since i don't meet the post quota, i can't ask in that thread. :crying:
i can't seem to update through the built-in updater. since the author doesn't seem to want to update the latest version for download, the only option to get the latest version is through the built-in updater which can't seem to ever find a server for me.
i can't seem to get my nexus 7 4.1.2 to root. it goes through the motion but when it's done i'm still not root. i was rooted when it was 4.1.1. on system update to 4.1.2, it kept the bootloader unlocked. i don't want to 'reformat' my nexus 7 again using the unlock bootloader option. :silly:
i tried wug's rootkit but it couldn't even finish doing a backup.
Boot into a custom recovery and flash either SuperSU or Superuser. This is completely trivial and is why you shouldn't use toolkits.
crachel - thanks! all i did was download and installed 'voodoo ota rootkeeper v2.0.3' from google play store. it installed something called 'supersu' in my apps list. everything seems to be rooted now. :highfive:
i didn't install a 'custom recovery' or had to flash either 'SuperSU' or 'Superuser.'
Nexus 10 with 4.2.1.
I unlocked and rooted using Wug's Nexus Root Toolkit v1.6.2.
I hear that 4.2.2. ug is coming soon. Questions are:
Will upgrading to 4.2.2 unroot the device and if so, will Root Toolkit 1.6.2 root it again or will I have to wait for the upgrade to the toolkit.
Thanks.

I had the exact same situation and question as you except asked it in the Nexus 7 thread. Like you I used wugfresh toolkit to unlocked & rooted v4.2.1. Then today I downloaded & installed v4.2.2 using the quickboots recovery app that wugfresh installed. After that, I lost root. I took a chance and just used wugfresh toolkit configured still for v4.2.1 (since it currently has no choice for the newer v4.2.2 yet.) and rooted my Nexus 7 again. It worked and rerooted v4.2.2.

Thanks for the input. To be on the safe side, I installed OTA root keeper. I will try installing 4.2.2 this weekend and see what happens
I flashed it yesterday.
Restored my stock 4.2.1 Nandroid.
Used OTA Rootkeeper to backup su.
flashed the zip file in TWRP without renaming or anything. Didn't wipe anything either.
Once it completed I restored root with OTA Rootkeeper.
Reflashed TWRP with Goo Manager app once booted because you will loose TWRP recovery while flashing the zip!
and done... no issues so far.

I used Wug's toolkit 1.6.2.
First I copied the 4.2.2 OTA zip file to the Nexus 10
Ran the toolkit and told it to boot into temporary custom recovery
Install the zip file
cleared Cache and Dalvik
Rebooted.
Never lost root except for Titanium Backup but another reboot cleared that up.
My N4 was on 4.2.1 and I managed to root it using the video guide here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sV355YEDzc8&list=FLym1yJ2TTTjBZbty0DrqsKQ&index=3). It worked fine and I was using Titanium Backup with root access.
Then my phone notified me of the 4.2.2 update so I installed it OTA. I thought I still had root because SuperSU was still there. However, when I load Titanium Backup it says:
"Sorry, I could not acquire root privileges. This application will *not* work! Please verify that your ROM is rooted, and try again. This attempt was made using the /system/xbin/su" command"
I then installed a Root Checker (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.joeykrim.rootcheck&feature=nav_result) which indicates "This device does not have proper root access".
My questions are
How do I regain root access in a way that doesn't cause a full wipe of my data?
Will I have to do this every time I apply an official Nexus update?
What is the best way to apply an official Nexus update maintaining root without having data wiped?
TIA
I personally use the toolkit and option four. Every time I install an update, I lose root, but the toolkit easily restores it each time.
Sent from my Nexus 4
I too lost my root when i got 4.2.2 OTA. I used WugFresh's toolkit and rerooted with it. I also flashed the CWM custom recovery, which I've read prompts you to keep your root after rebooting with an OTA update.

If you have cwm and you install any update that breaks root it will ask of you want to keep root when you choose to reboot the nexus 4.

This must be about the 100th time someone posts this question.
Some of you clearly are too lazy to search or read

So I updated my tab because there was an incremental update. I lost root and twrp after that, so I used wugs toolkit flash twrp and root my device. My question is, the process installed busybox and whenever I install it (coz wug said so during the process) the binaries do not seem to be found as it continuously nags me to update when I already did so. Also, it doesn't seem to be installed on system/xbin. Need help
Has anyone been able to regain root and TWRP/CWM after their 4.4.2 (KOT49H) update. I was rooted with TWRP installed and able to talk via ADB and everything before the update, and now I can't get my N7 to even talk to my PC via Wug's toolkit.
Has anyone else seen this?

Rooted with TWRP on 4.4.2.
Is your USB debugging turned on?
I used SuperSU (due to the security glitches that were found) and in there, I turned on the "Survival Mode" before applying the 4.4.2 update. When all was said and done, root was still there as was TWRP.
Also, I use SkipSoft's Unified Toolkit to root and install TWRP on my N7.
Yes, USB debugging is turned on. I can't communicate at all via ADB. I tried un-installing and re-installing drivers multiple times still no luck. I am wanting to use Wug's Nexus Root Toolkit, which is what I used before the update.

I think I might have figured it out...The "universal drivers" must not be so universal or something. I used the PDAnet drivers and I can talk to my pc via ADB now, going to try and root now.

yep got it, was a drivers issue, thanks for your help!
Should have tried the other drivers from the start but the universal drivers just worked well for me in the past, I thought it must be something else.
Hi. Same problem here but I am on Linux Mint, so drivers are not the issue for me (I guess). I will appreciate any ideas how to have TWRP working. Thanks!

Hello, I have similar problem. Installed OTA and lost my root. Now, I flashed UPDATE-SU from recovery, but when I boot, I see no SU icon and it seems I;m not rooted.... Any ideas how to root?

Hi, dalanik...
Yep... had this problem myself recently.
You probably are actually rooted... you just don't have Chainfire's SuperSU app icon.
Try the following...
Download the SuperSU app from Google Playstore... and run it.
It should detect that you are rooted, and if so, it will probably inform you that the su binary needs updating. Allow it (normally, not via TWRP/CWM), and reboot...
Upon reboot, you should now (hopefully) find the SuperSU icon in the app drawer.
Rgrds,
Ged.
Thanx man, that was it...thought I was going mad, flashed it like 4 times....
