[Q] Upgrading to 4.2.2 and rooting - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Nexus 10 with 4.2.1.
I unlocked and rooted using Wug's Nexus Root Toolkit v1.6.2.
I hear that 4.2.2. ug is coming soon. Questions are:
Will upgrading to 4.2.2 unroot the device and if so, will Root Toolkit 1.6.2 root it again or will I have to wait for the upgrade to the toolkit.
Thanks.

I had the exact same situation and question as you except asked it in the Nexus 7 thread. Like you I used wugfresh toolkit to unlocked & rooted v4.2.1. Then today I downloaded & installed v4.2.2 using the quickboots recovery app that wugfresh installed. After that, I lost root. I took a chance and just used wugfresh toolkit configured still for v4.2.1 (since it currently has no choice for the newer v4.2.2 yet.) and rooted my Nexus 7 again. It worked and rerooted v4.2.2.

Thanks for the input. To be on the safe side, I installed OTA root keeper. I will try installing 4.2.2 this weekend and see what happens

I flashed it yesterday.
Restored my stock 4.2.1 Nandroid.
Used OTA Rootkeeper to backup su.
flashed the zip file in TWRP without renaming or anything. Didn't wipe anything either.
Once it completed I restored root with OTA Rootkeeper.
Reflashed TWRP with Goo Manager app once booted because you will loose TWRP recovery while flashing the zip!
and done... no issues so far.

I used Wug's toolkit 1.6.2.
First I copied the 4.2.2 OTA zip file to the Nexus 10
Ran the toolkit and told it to boot into temporary custom recovery
Install the zip file
cleared Cache and Dalvik
Rebooted.
Never lost root except for Titanium Backup but another reboot cleared that up.

[Q] Problem with my Rooted Nexus 4 and SuperSU

I got a Google Nexus 4 about a month ago. Somebody told me I should root my phone so I installed the Nexus toolkit and did all of that. I proceeded to install a buncha stuff on it like Call Master, Titanium backup, etc.
But then I kept getting notifications saying there was an update to Android 4.2.2 so I updated it thinking maybe it wouldn't cause a problem. But now none of my programs work, and when I open up SuperSU it says:
"There is no SU binary installed, and SuperSU cannot install it. This is a problem!"
how can I fix this?

Do you have a custom recovery? You'll have to flash the SuperSU zip again so it can install the binaries.

Alot of times u lose root when u install an OTA. You will need to reroot your phone

What's a custom recovery exactly? I'm a complete noob to this stuff.
And how do I flash the SuperSU zip again?
Just download the toolkit from WuFresh and in it they have an for Nexus 4 on 4.2.2 proceed to root again since your bootloader should be already unlocked (when the phone boots you see under Google a lock that has been unlocked) once it's rooted again, you'll be clear, I would suggest making a fresh Nandroid after you rooted having the new OTA.

So basically I gotta re-root my phone again? If I do that am I gonna lose everything?
No only unlocking the bootloader will erase your data

Get OTA Root Keeper from the Play Store and back up. Then whenever there is an OTA update, you just restore the back up and you will have root again.

Keep Root or Re-Root 4.3 - SOLVED

UPDATE - I discovered a Nexus 4 thread, followed the direction (changing as needed for the N7) and voila it worked
I created a step-by-step tutorial to keep ALL data going from 4.2.2 root > 4.3 root
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2390286
Unlocked Bootloader and Rooted. From what I've read I can't keep root (as of now). So what is the easiest way to keep all my data and move over to Rooted 4.3? Step-by-step would be helpful....
Thanks.
The easiest way if you have stock recovery is to revert any system changes you've made (in my case remove the AOSP browser from system apps), accept the OTA update, and once it's up and running, boot into twrp without permanently flashing (which you can do with mskips toolkit) and flash the updated 1.51 supersu zip. Then go to the play store and activate the supersu app.

Worked like a charm!! Thank you very much!! Super quick/easy! Already did the OTA update and thought it would be a pain in the ass to fix, but no problem.
Mskip's toolkit: http://goo.im/devs/mskip/toolkit/google_nexus7/Google_Nexus_7_ToolKit_v5.0.0.exe

I have the same situation here, but I'm not familiar with the procedure.
"boot into twrp without permanently flashing (which you can do with mskips toolkit) and flash the updated 1.51 supersu zip."
could you explain that step by step please?
I install the toolkit - which point to I have to use? and wat is twrp?
What do I have to do, to flash the 1.51 supesu.zip?
Big thanks in advance

Is it not easier to simply use Chainfires CF Auto-Root? A couple of clicks in windows and it's done.
Does Chainfires CF Auto-Root only root not make any changes? I don't want to have to reset the rom back to factory or reinstall all of the apps. If Chainfires CF Auto-Root does just root, cool.
With Mskip's toolkit how do you root? There is no choice for 4.3, just 4.2.2.
Unless I've missed something when installing the OTA using clockwork recovery it asked if I wanted to stop a stock recovery from being reinstalled and if I wanted to keep root. This just seemed to work and gave me 4.3 with custom recovery and root - nothing else needed.

I'd like my hand held too, please. Or at least link to instructions. Thanks.
If anyone wants to actually make a 1,2,3,etc direction list, many people would be grateful.

1. I'm not sure if I have any system changes? Is there an easy way to tell?
2. Running OTA update will only remove Root, not unlocked Bootloader or Custom Recovery (CWM/TWRP)?
Am I following this right? Supposing I have removed any system changes i do the following:
1. Accept OTA
2. After update boot into recovery (Vol Down + Power) --- CWM in my case
3. Flash the 1.51 SuperSU Zip
4. DONE? I'm rooted?

[Q] Can I safely update my rooted N10 to 4.3

I have a rooted N10 (was rooted by previous owner). Can you advise me if I can safely update it to 4.3 ?
Yes you can.
You can do this by OTA ... but you will get stock system (no root included).
You can still root your system using one of the methods shown on XDA forum.

Thanks for the reply, if I root after updating to 4.3 will I retain my data/settings?
Yes You will keep your data
My preferable tool for Nexus 10 is in this thread => Wug's Nexus Root Toolkit
also install a custom recovery like TWRP or CWM, they are very useful if you want to try custom ROMs or backup
I had mine rooted when I updated and had no issues. I'll share how I did it:
I downloaded the factory images from Google Developer
Made a Titanium Backup of my apps
Installed a custom recovery
Performed a Factory Reset
Flashed bootloader with fastboot
Rebooted in bootloader
Flashed system, boot and cache with fastboot
Rebooted
Configured my Google account
Rooted using Chainfire latest SuperSU (https://plus.google.com/113517319477420052449/posts/GjbpgDdF6Fq)
Installed Titanium Backup
Recovered my apps
Hope this works for you . Android 4.3 is quite amazing

lost root after 4.4.2 upgrade, cant re-root

hello guys,
I had 4.4.1 rom+kernel stock, rooted and custom recovery, after the OTA to 4.4.2 lost my root and recovery.
tried re-root with wug's but it gets stuck on "pushing root file to you device".
got superSU application but cant remove it because its system application.
Is there a way to root it?
thanks.
Same here except i had cwm touch latest. It seems i have lost my recovery too. If i try and boot into the recovery menu i get the open hood android with a red triangle.
No custom kernel only custom recovery.
Sent from my Nexus 7 (2012)
I lost my custom recovery too. But I just reflashed it (adb reboot bootloader, then flashed a downloaded custom recovery via fastboot), and then reflashed SuperSU as well.

I'm having the same problem. Root undone, and recovery went back to stock. Custom recovery doesn't stick after reboot.

I was in the same situation after my OTA of 4.4.2
I had nexus root toolkit, tried to put in twrp with it failed.
Then updated to the latest nrt and then I could flash the latest twrp, havent tried cwm.
and eventually got the root back using nrt

Found the solution to my problem. Used CF Auto Root instead of manually flashing SuperSU again. Cheers guys!

Same thing happened to me. just use fastboot to flash CWM, then before you reboot go into the recovery. then next time you reboot it will still be there. For some reason if I flash the recovery then reboot without entering recovery it will loose the recovery.
Once you have the recovery back, just flash the SuperSU binary through CWM.
Also, IMHO, dont use toolkits... you dont really know whats going on when you use those. Learn to use ADB & fastboot. They are really simple to use and you will be better able to help yourself when you have problems in the future.

I have trouble with root and SuperSU on 4.4.2

I'm having trouble with SuperSU on 4.4.2 on Nexus 4.
So at 4.3 I unrooted first, then OTA'ed to 4.4 and now 4.4.2.
Yesterday I used cf-auto to root my phone, but there was no SuperSU. Then I downloaded one from Google Play. But it keeps saying "unfortunately SuperSU has stopped" when there is a need to use SuperSU, i.g. when there is a root explorer app running. I doubt whether the root was successful so I downloaded a root checker, but it kept saying "please wait". So I even don't know whether my phone is rooted.
Please help.
Do you have a custom recovery? Download the zip in the op and flash in recovery.

no i have the original recovery.
I tried Reinstallation in SuperSU and used root checker, which said my device has root access. But after I installed SuperSU again, it keeps crashing again. (keeps saying SUperUS has stopped.)
If you haven't gotten this squared away, I would recommend using Wug's toolkit to return to stock unrooted and then using the toolkit to reroot.

Just encountered this kind of problem on Purity. Flashed latest build (4.4.2), and then I didn't have root acces anymore. Then I tried rooting with Wug's toolkit (CWM as recovery and SuperSU as root), and unfortunately superSU didn't appear at all in the apps. I tried installing it from the recovery, no luck.
Then I tried it with SuperUser. it worked. I didn't ask any questions
