[Q] Re Root Nexus 7 after JZO54K - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Steps to now.
Used Nexus Root Toolkit 1.5.3 to unlock and root my virgin Nexus 7 running JRO03D. All went well, StickMount worked and I installed Titanium and Clockwork Rom Manager. Everything great. It seem like I should have installed some sort of unlock protection but I did not know about that.
Read abut JZO54K and liked rotating launch screen idea.
(Big Mistake) used Rom Manager to install downloaded zip file. Got warning that this was going to lock me up but did not see any way out. I am running locked JZO54K and all my apps are intact.
Device is now locked and not rooted. Tried Nexus Root Toolkit 1.5.4 but can not unlock the device. The Unlock button just ends up rebooting the device into locked JZO54K. If I power off and restart the padlock shows open at first. then the X, and then the padlock is locked.
I really miss StickMount.
Any ideas?????

I am using WugFresh Nexus Root Toolkit. The latest version is 1.5.4. Perhaps I should try Root Toolkit if it is a different program.

I downloaded and tried the Nexus 7 Toolkit 3.2.0. I tried several times. It reports that bootloader is unlocked but when I try to root it ends up telling me that the device is not found and it can't puts su etc. I always end up booted into stock 4.1.2.
Looking at this forum it seems that I am not the only one with this problem.
Is there some way I could go back to 4.1.1 and restart from there? Does the fact that I was once rooted and have SuperSU, BusyBox, Clockwork etc installed mess things up? Should I uninstall them and try again? Very frustrating.
Roger

Got root again by using WugFresh Nexus Toolkit. Used suggestion on his Page to replace bootloader. Then I rooted without needing to unlock and wipe. Stick Mountain works again.

[Q] Lost root after Jelly bean update?

I just manually updated jelly bean to 4.1.2 using CWM and I don't have root anymore. I'm going to try rerooting when I get home but, I was wondering, will I be able do it without losing all my data?
I have exactly the same issue, I'ved tried either using NRT or manually, not success and no error as well
Your bootloader should still be unlocked, so its a simple matter of installing the JB SuperSU zip. You can download this from my drop box.

your data should remain intact.

Wow, I can't even boot into CWM anymore even though I was able to this morning. I have the USB connected to get around the bug, and I've ever tried using ADB. I'll let you know how it goes after fixing this problem first.
[edit]
I couldn't boot into CWM despite my efforts. I ended up using Wug's Nexus Root Toolkit, which thankfully supports 4.1.2 already, and re-rooted and it worked like a charm. Here's the link to the tool kit for anyone who needs it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766475
Flash new JB bootloader. This will fix the old bootloader bug of not being able to boot into recovery without the aid of a PC.

To save you the hassle next time you update, give ota rootkeeper a try. It's free on the market.

Root again
I rooted again with Nexus Root Toolkit version v1.5.3. I only pressed "Root" button (10 minutes).
Can I Re root without pc?
How do you flash without access to recovery? Adb?

Lost root after 4.2 update. Need help!

Hi guys, I just updated my N7 to 4.2 and I lost root during the process. I made a su backup with Voodoo OTA rootkeeper before I did the install. After the install was complete, went back into voodoo to restore root, rebooted, and did a root check using 3 different apps. Voodoo shows my device rooted and root checker and titanium backup cannot find my root access. Is there something I did wrong, and is there any way to restore root access without a fresh wipe. Thanks in advanced!!!
Try uninstalling your root App and then reinstalling it. You also might want to wipe cache and data for your root App in Apps under Settings. Do this before uninstalling.
If that doesn't work push root to your device using one of the many methods available.

I tried that with no luck. I am trying Wug's toolkit right now, but android 4.2 doesn't show up under the model list.
Need to push the superuser app via fastboot. Either adb or use wugs toolkit.

Wugs worked perfectly. THANKS!! For anyone who is having the same problem, I used wugs toolkit, and I chose Nexus 7 "any build type" under the model type.
Glad you got it. I did the update at work and had the same problem till I got home to the pc.

I ran into same problem, if you use Wug Toolkit, make sure you set to "android Anybuild". this Toolkit is not yet updated for 4.2.
There is another Nexus Toolkit by Mark Skippen which was updated to 4.2, however you need to donate to get the latest version. It works well for me
It's woth the donation of Pounds 5 or $8++ something
Good Luck

[Q] bought n7 with custom rom want to update to 4.2...can i?

Hello!
First post here and let me start off by saying i have no experience what so ever with rooting or custom roms . Purchased a N7 today that the seller said is running a custom rom. The wallpaper says clean rom so maybe that means something. It is running 4.1.2 and is prompting me to update....i assume to 4.2. My question is can i update? If so where does that put me? Will the update put me back to stock or is the device still rooted or running a custom rom?
Hey...i warned you...i know nothing about this but this appears to be the place to figure it out.
I have been reading for quite some time and could not find a clear answer.
Thanks in advance!!
You probably wont be able to update, you would have to flash back to stock 4.1.2. first .It does a check of certain stock files and system apk's before it will update, you would be better off going to https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images and getting the full stock 4.2 and doing a flash using wugs, there are alot of tutorials on here for directions.
Flashing the stock image over the device is fairly simple. I'm not adv savvy at all, but the wugs toolkit works SO LONG AS YOU GET YOUR DRIVERS SET UP RIGHT. Wigs also requires you to be running Windows. But wugs toolkit will allow you to flash the factory OK mage and then root it so you can use stickmount and ad away and such.-Ara

Need help, rooting nexus 4 with WUGfresh 1.6.1 did not work

i'm completely new to android/nexus 4/ rooting so i used the wugfresh to try to root my nexus 4 since it was supposed to be easy. it was going all good and i unlocked the bootloader and then when i went to root, everything was going good too. however, it did not get passed the twrp menu, it just stayed there and i did not know what to do. so i clicked "reboot system" and when it rebooted it said my nexus4 was rooted but superuser and busybox was not installed. when i ran some apps that needed root to work, they did not work. i tried installing superuser and busybox myself from android google play and it still did not work!
PLEASE HELP

[Q] How to Root Nexus 7

Hi guys. I want to root my nexus 7 (8gb) so I can play music through a usb drive. And I don't want to install any roms or stuff like that, I want it to be exactly how it is now, with android 4.2.1. I've been browsing the forums, but I can't really find instructions on how to do a simple root for my purposes. If anyone could direct me to the steps I need, that would be great!! Thanks!! (Btw, I'm totally new to this rooting stuff, this is my first android device )

simple rooot.. fastboot oem unlock, fastboot flash a custom recovery, flash the super user binaries via your custom recovery, reboot and profit. you either have root or you dont, there arent different kinds of root depending on your needs. i suggest you do a bit more searching and reading, because its impossible not to find instructions if you actually searched for it. of course if not finding it on xda, you can always search the words root and nexus 7 in www.google.com
There are several ways to root your Nexus7, and I think using the toolkit is the easiest.
I'd like to recommend to download this toolkit to your PC.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1809195
With using this toolkit, you can root your device as follows.
1. install the Nexus7 drivers to your PC
2. unlock the bootloader of your Nexus7
(when you unlock the bootloader, all data is deleted.)
3. install custom recovery to your Nexus7 (i recommend TWRP)
4. root your Nexus7
enjoy

Is there a later version of the rootkit? The last image it has is 4.2.1. 4.2.2 is out and I'd imagine on most Nexus-es.
