I just manually updated jelly bean to 4.1.2 using CWM and I don't have root anymore. I'm going to try rerooting when I get home but, I was wondering, will I be able do it without losing all my data?
I have exactly the same issue, I'ved tried either using NRT or manually, not success and no error as well
Your bootloader should still be unlocked, so its a simple matter of installing the JB SuperSU zip. You can download this from my drop box.

your data should remain intact.

Wow, I can't even boot into CWM anymore even though I was able to this morning. I have the USB connected to get around the bug, and I've ever tried using ADB. I'll let you know how it goes after fixing this problem first.
[edit]
I couldn't boot into CWM despite my efforts. I ended up using Wug's Nexus Root Toolkit, which thankfully supports 4.1.2 already, and re-rooted and it worked like a charm. Here's the link to the tool kit for anyone who needs it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766475
Flash new JB bootloader. This will fix the old bootloader bug of not being able to boot into recovery without the aid of a PC.

To save you the hassle next time you update, give ota rootkeeper a try. It's free on the market.

Root again
I rooted again with Nexus Root Toolkit version v1.5.3. I only pressed "Root" button (10 minutes).
Can I Re root without pc?
How do you flash without access to recovery? Adb?

My nexus 7 is rooted. Is that why it can't accept the 4.1.2 update? What should I do? It keeps reminding me to install the update every 15 minutes. When I try to, it just crashes.

I'm trying to update it while keeping root. I downloaded ota root keeper. But I keep getting the "dead Android with red exclamation mark" screen every time I try to install the OTA update. I even tried its option to temporarily un-root before performing the update, but no luck. Anyone have any ideas?
Edit - Also I tried installing it manually. Used GooManager to install TWRP and tried installing 4.1.2 through it. Still fails every time. I'm disgusted.

Backup--unroot--relock--update--unlock--reroot--recover? I'm brand new to this stuff (don't even have a N7 yet), but seems like this would work.
The stock update will only install with stock recovery being root has no effect. If you have changed system apps. Like to the 4.2 apps floating around could stop the update as well. Google does not care another root or unlocked. I would say do factory reset then update then root. Or download one of the stock cwm/twelve roms and be done with it.

Well it happened again. The 4.2.2 update is out and I can't update to it. Every time I try, I get the dead android error icon.
It sure gets old saying this, but...
The error message is recorded in the recovery log at
/cache/recovery/recovery.log
You will find that the problem has nothing to do with root per se - generally the root user (or apps that were granted root privilege) have altered or deleted something in /system needed for the OTA to correctly complete.
In general, OTAs are not meant for customized ROMs - it is unreasonable for anyone to have an expectation that they will work correctly on a customized ROM.
But I didn't install a customized rom. I just rooted/unlocked it.
You can always download the update from Google's servers and flash it through fastboot. No hassle.

Note that the recovery.log file gets overwritten every time you boot the recovery, so the thing you are trying to retrieve (let's say with the booted OS) will be from the immediately prior use of the recovery. So, attempt the OTA (let it fail), then boot into the OS and capture that file (using something which is root-privileged).
So here is my dilemma. I was having problems with my Google apps for whatever reason. Manually updated to 4.2 and still has the same problems. Did a factory reset and the problems went away. Decided I wanted to get rid of root and relock the bootloader since I'm going to give her thus one because I'm upgrading to the 32GB model. Wanted to get rid of the superuser icon in the app drawer mainly. I went to googles site and downloaded the factory images for 4.2. Used it in conjunction with the nexus 7 toolkit. Long story short for whatever reason the process didn't complete. Pretty sure I don't have a factory image at all at this point. I tried to use the nexus 7 toolkit but of course now it won't see my device. My tablet is still unlocked. I'm assuming I'm going to have to manually push the image to the phone. If any body can start me off in the right direction it will be greatly appreciated. Especially if someone were able to provide links to the info I may need. In the mean time I'm looking around on Google. Haven't found anything concrete yet. As a side note if anyone could tell me how to actually turn off the tablet do I can preserve the battery it would be appreciated. I can only get it to show fast boot mode or the Google screen. Can't power down.

Dunno... after trying to update yesterday, twrp, cwm, stock wasn't having it, had to put stock boot loader back on, everything wiped, not a problem....nandroid backup....toolkit shows it working but nothing, toolkit said everything was there....only unlock and root worked, everything else was borked.
And I had to use Windows for the tool kit. Doh.
Toolkit has been a bane for me, finally got 4.2 using root keeper.
Off-topic.... maybe.
Lesson learnt... definitely.
Motorola Atrix (AOKP JB)
Nexus 7 (Stock+ Root)
Desire HD ~ overheating rebooting.

Can't use the toolkit bcuz it doesn't see my device. Can't enable USB debugging. Unless there is a way around that?

Hi guys, I just updated my N7 to 4.2 and I lost root during the process. I made a su backup with Voodoo OTA rootkeeper before I did the install. After the install was complete, went back into voodoo to restore root, rebooted, and did a root check using 3 different apps. Voodoo shows my device rooted and root checker and titanium backup cannot find my root access. Is there something I did wrong, and is there any way to restore root access without a fresh wipe. Thanks in advanced!!!
Try uninstalling your root App and then reinstalling it. You also might want to wipe cache and data for your root App in Apps under Settings. Do this before uninstalling.
If that doesn't work push root to your device using one of the many methods available.

I tried that with no luck. I am trying Wug's toolkit right now, but android 4.2 doesn't show up under the model list.
Need to push the superuser app via fastboot. Either adb or use wugs toolkit.

I ran into same problem, if you use Wug Toolkit, make sure you set to "android Anybuild". this Toolkit is not yet updated for 4.2.
There is another Nexus Toolkit by Mark Skippen which was updated to 4.2, however you need to donate to get the latest version. It works well for me
It's woth the donation of Pounds 5 or $8++ something
Good Luck

Hi did you by any change have SuperSU v.0.98 installed prior to the upgrade with survival mode enabled?

Hello!
First post here and let me start off by saying i have no experience what so ever with rooting or custom roms . Purchased a N7 today that the seller said is running a custom rom. The wallpaper says clean rom so maybe that means something. It is running 4.1.2 and is prompting me to update....i assume to 4.2. My question is can i update? If so where does that put me? Will the update put me back to stock or is the device still rooted or running a custom rom?
Hey...i warned you...i know nothing about this but this appears to be the place to figure it out.
I have been reading for quite some time and could not find a clear answer.
Thanks in advance!!
You probably wont be able to update, you would have to flash back to stock 4.1.2. first .It does a check of certain stock files and system apk's before it will update, you would be better off going to https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images and getting the full stock 4.2 and doing a flash using wugs, there are alot of tutorials on here for directions.
Flashing the stock image over the device is fairly simple. I'm not adv savvy at all, but the wugs toolkit works SO LONG AS YOU GET YOUR DRIVERS SET UP RIGHT. Wigs also requires you to be running Windows. But wugs toolkit will allow you to flash the factory OK mage and then root it so you can use stickmount and ad away and such.-Ara

Hello forgive me if this is the wrong place on this forum for this topic.
I unlocked my phone with the wugfresh method and did keep it stock ROM. Now my sweet google phone wants to update OTA but it won't do it.
Can someone help me. I want to go 4.3 and keep it stock, and rooted: )

Do it manually by downloading the Google factory images and flashing them yourself. Can either flash them through a toolkit like I did (which most people wouldn't recommend), or you can flash them yourself with fastboot. A quick search or look around will show you how to do it

Do you mean that selecting the download/install button will not do anything?
Did you install a custom recovery?, you need a stock recovery for it to work, I have the stock recovery image itself if you need it.

i guess the google image isnt on the sd card anymore. how do i put the google image on the sd card.
i am using the wugg fresh method now
Use fastboot to flash the image from your computer. Efrant has a guide for returning to stock in General.
This, yet again, is why people shouldn't use toolkits.
gues thanks my nexus is back alife with the post in the general, id managed it. thanks guys.
this method brings me some old dos memories back :highfive: hhehe was fun afterwarts
