Bad WiFi signal a general JB problem? - Galaxy S I9000 General

My WiFi signal was bad with every JB ROM I ever installed so could that be a general problem with JB ROM ROMs? Or is there one with good WiFi signal?
Any other experience?

Partly, yes, but often it is just a visual bug so that the actual signal strength is not shown correctly.
That said, I've found that on jb, wifi channels above 10 work very poorly. I'm guessing you're from Germany, so have a look at which channel your wifi is on.

have you tried flashing another modem? anw for me that problem has persisted even from stock gb rom (I tried different modems), but wifi's working fine. I guess it's just a visual bug as adytum said

Modems do not affect wifi signal strength, unfortunately.

Thanks for your response. Tbh I have no idea what a WiFi Chanel is and how to change it. And unfortunately it's not just a virtual effect. Here by my gf (e.g.) I lose my connectivity inside the house from time to time or I have a really bad signal while my gf still get a great signal even in the last corner. She has a iPhone 3gs btw. I'm using slim ROM ATM and I love the most out of every ROM I tried .. except for the WiFi

First of all, make sure you do not have "avoid poor connections" ticked in wifi advanced settings.
The channel is easy to change, but you do this by logging in on the control panel of the modem, you'll need a username and password.
You could also try an app, wifi analyzer for instance, which shows you which channel the networks are on. For me, changing channels down to 5 from 12 made a huge impact, but others have not had any effect from it.
Usually the channels above 10 are only in use in Europe and Japan, so some isps here will set their router to high channels to avoid interference from other nets on the common channels.
@JCBG I can't see what that article has to do with wifi signal?

Thank you. I will give it a try when I am at home again. Here where I am now the WiFi uses channel 4 BTW (my gf don't know their router password >.>). Which one should work good?
Gesendet von meinem GT-I9000 mit Tapatalk 2

Well, channel 4 should actually be in the good range.
As far as I know, nobody has come up with any alternative solutions to this issue.
I might add that for me, disabling qos, quality of service, on my router, improved the speed, but not the visual signal indication of my phone's wifi.
Sent from horseback.

Oh hm .. it's probably just jelly bean? As I mentioned earlier on my gfs phone it works properly :/

Yeah, it seems so, and there seems to be more than one cause, seeing how nets with low channel numbers fixes it for me.
Sent from horseback.

Is the WiFi signal on ICS also bad? I don't remember.

No, never had problems with it before jb. And I've at least tried 5 different jb roms, with no difference.
Sent from horseback.

Guess I have to switch back to ICS then :/

have you factually measured a difference in traffic bandwidth?
or are you switching back just because the wifi visual indicator doesnt show full reception anymore?

Hell no it is not just visual. I lose the connectivity and it is slow as hell. And it was not like that before.

no problems here..

same bad experience here. After update to JB my wifi connection is very poor, not just visual.I hope it will a solution later.

On ics cm9 my wifi was good, now im on jb mackay rom and its really bad. I get a weak signal, but i think the driver of wifi are bad made of the developer. My bro has the same phone and uses helly bean and his connection is always better. His wifi is good like cm9 was.

Wifi works great for me on CM10

[Q] New to iconia tab. Custom ROM with better wifi signal?

Hi, I'm new to my Iconia tab a500, and I usually have a pretty low wifi signal, and Ive read other people having the same issue.
Will installing a custom rom help the wifi signal strength?
I am planning to install Virtuous Galaxy v1.0.6 on TabletRoms.
Or, Do you guys know any ROM you have tried that has a better wifi signal for your iconia tab a500?
Thanks a lot!
why flash a rom that was built around a different device? and its outdated.
if you want issues just go ahead.
just stick with stockor modified acer roms and everything will work the way it should.
the wifi issueis piss poor antunna design and maybe driver implementation.
without a numeric wifi mod we cant tell what the true signal is.
given the history of these things dont judge the signal meter as proof. base it off your ability to stream content either locally or over the internet.

Have to agree with this, my signal meeter usually ranges in the halfway mark unless I am in the same room as my router, then it will be full. But I have not had any issues streaming or downloading.
No issues with the wifi connection at all. Im running Taboonay 2.0. It looks like the wifi works pretty decent in all rooms at my house.

Nexus 10 restarting randomly

Hi all, had my nexus 10 since the opening sale on the google play store. Recently I've been having issues with it restarting randomly, in some cases when it has just been sitting on my desk without any input.
I've also had a few problems with the wifi as well as a creaky backplate. I see the backplate issue is common with most who have the device but was wondering if the WiFi issue could be the reason my device keeps restarting? I'm at the point now where I may have to send it back.

I'd be willing to bet it was rebooting the whole time and you didn't notice. Turning off the location services is hit and miss. Some say it cures it (after an unspecified amount of time usually) but others like me still see reboots.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
I just started getting the reboot error except I was able to isolate the problem to a lost wifi signal. With chrome reloading a couple pages, turn off my wifi router and the nexus 10 will freeze. It won't respond to any input and will just set for about a minute until it finally reboots on its own.
Only time ever I have had the freeze/reboot error is when I went into an area that lost the signal. Seems like chrome/nexus 10 does not know how to handle the lost signal and tries to correct it with a hardware reboot. Happens at both 2.4 and 5ghz.
Hopefully be corrected in the next software upgrade.

I only have issues if the AP in the router is set to use a 40Mhz channel bandwidth. If I set it to 20Mhz, I can enjoy stable wifi goodness. It took me 2 RMA'd Nex 10s and testing with 3 different routers to come to this conclusion, but this was the workaround that succeeded for me.

I have actually noticed a difference on the different routers so I'll pay a bit more attention to this and see if my device reflects the same results.

+1. Same process worked wonders for my N10.
I know random reboots is common with 4.2 but is it possible it's hardware related or something else? Reason being, I get alot of random reboots on the PUB AOKP rom, that just about all other users of that rom say they have zero random reboots, and I also get reboots while in TWRP, which I have reinstalled multiple times.

Its just so ludicrously awful to need to replace default apps and turn off features to have a usable tablet. Not so much for us because we will root and fix things ourselves but if a random person goes into best buy and buys a nexus 7 or 10 they will have a bad experience. All the people who say android is buggy...this is why. Its unfortunate how broken 4.2 is.

Since you set your router to 20 MHz has it continued to work without rebooting? Also do have geo location enabled ? Thanks
Mine also random reboot and hang. When fix will be out! This is crazy for v4.2 or v4.2.1
Android please release fixed as soon as possible.
Any kernel or ROM solving this issue now? Or all same?

Ya, I was at CM 10.1 now, it was much better, especially when removed and not using Chrome. By the way CM 10.1 stock browser was much better and smooth.

Yeah I'm on a custom ROM with linaro optimizations and its fantastic. Slapped in ktmanta kernel and now just full of win. Aosp browser is better than chrome anyway. It's a sad state of affairs when community work is better than Google's but at least we can enjoy alternatives.

I have a hunch that the CPU isn't getting enough power. I've currently upped the voltage by 25V so I'm going to see if that does anything. Using CleanROM definitely did reduce it though.

[Q] Terrible wifi; ROM or old tech?

So I recently got this tablet, rooted it, and installed the 4.3 nightlys (this ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2413878)
I've been bringing it to work so I can just get things done faster reading e-mail and news without distracting during my breaks. At some point, I started to noticed how incredibly slow things loaded up such as trying to load articles from feedly as well as its videos. I later noticed that my wifi was only 2 bars. I figured it was enough but apparently it isn't as things just load up so bloody slow.
I decided to to download the app, Speed Test, into the tablet and found out I've been downloading at crappy speeds of 900-1100 kbps while my Samsung Galaxy S4, in the same area I'm testing the speed, is running at ridiculous speeds of 26-30 >mbps<.
I actually restore the tablet back to original stock and tested again and same deal. Has anyone got this problem? I'm leading to believe its old hardware which would be incredibly disappointing if that's the case... but maybe there's an update or fix for this terrible wifi?
Check your Advanced WiFi settings - disable 'WiFi optimisation' and see how that goes. Apparently it slows things down!

I turned off and used it for a few days; same issue. Is there any other possibilities? Any patches or fixes for this? Because if it's really because of old tech, I'm going to sell this and try out Swappa to avoid eBay fees for such a disappointment.
Maybe you got a bad tablet mine off n router is way faster then that. Loads almost instantly

the router/modem combo that Time Warner gave me is junk, don't know what the hell is wrong with it
but other routers at my friends houses seem to do fine
so i'm guessing it's a hardware issue

oh yeah, if anyone know how to do that (router to router) message me or something

WiFi Dropouts

Is anybody else suffering from WiFi Dropouts? My phone drops out quite regularly while connected to my Bt home hub 4. Not had any issues with previous phones/tablets just since my edge+. Have reset my router and all is fine with the other devices in the house. Just putting the feelers out to see if anyone else is experienceing the same.
Sent from my SM-G928F using Tapatalk
Yes - I experience intermittent dropouts. I can tell because it happens while I am streaming live video which then cuts out. The words 'wifiname connected' then appear as it immediately reconnects. It's annoying as it interrupts the stream. I also think it is happening when I receive a notification like a text message. I have tried playing with the phone's wifi settings but this did not fix it.
First time I have had this problem while owning many android phones over the years so I know it is not the routers.
At least I'm not the only one. You hit the nail on the head with it happening while streaming. Thats where I've noticed it the most. Now how to deal with the issue......
Sent from my SM-G928F using Tapatalk

I have the same issues, my wifi is a lot slower compared to others as well. I think its a software issue, Ive gone through 3 replacements and all experience the exact same issues.
It could be kernel issue. Did anyone who faces that issue try to flash custom kernel? One of my friend solved by flashing a kernel. Thanks.

Thanks for the help bro but unfortunately this hasn't resolved my issue. Tried different roms with different kernels and the problem still presists. Wifi on 5g is slower than all the other devices and after a while it will just drop and not connect to the Internet. I'm hoping it's a software issue but I'm starting to sense it's the hardware .

I tried flashing latest April modem.img (and later setting network mode on global), but signal strength is still bad and sometimes absent.. I think I'll change phone because it's unbilievable that a phone is bad in its primary use.. (I think it's not something of bad in software, but it's in hardware design)

I am on dotOS custom rom, last build...but...still wanna find a solution other then change the phone.
Maybe is placebo but on RR custom rom things seem better, but I have to flash/test other roms to see what happens.
We have to find something. Mi A1 it is a great phone after all.
Tested almost all the roms but for me they all have fluctuations. On stock I have no problems at all but on a 8.1 custom rom the fluctuations are back. BTW I have only at home the most fluctuations but solved that with a app. The minute i am at home and I am on wifi, data switch to 2g and then I got full signal without any problem. So it must be due to a crappy 4g connection at home.

I use automate for that. It works very good I downloaded a example setup from Google and changed it a little bit for my own personal use. Just Google automate 2g 4g setup and you will find several.
I use this one http://llamalab.com/automate/community/flows/1982
Thing I changed is the timer and the switch to 4g otherwise it goes to 3g.
I am on stock right now. The signal reception is weak, but better than some custom roms.

Tx, man! That's a good news! Very good! :highfive:
Broke my Mi A1 screen because the phone bent at work, so I went back to my trusty rusty N5.
I assume most of you have stumbled across this research;
https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-a1/themes/fix-network-issue-t3820025/post77144523
A fix had been implemented in PE that worked nicely, but wasn't without flaw.
Wondering, has anyone tried any of these build.props?
For better call quality
ro.ril.enable.amr.wideband=1
For better signal
persist.cust.tel.eons=1
Support For IPV4 and IPV6
persist.telephony.support.ipv6=1
persist.telephony.support.ipv4=1
I'll get around to buying a burner sim and trying them on my broken A1 eventually, but if anybody wants to try it I'm strongly recommending a backup first.
Also; has anyone looked into additional bands? One of the flaws may likely be carrier aggregation.
