[Q] Updated to 4.1.2. -> my unit is acting crazy - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
I have updated yesterday to 4.1.2 (using the nakasi JRO03D file flashed via CWM)
Initially all went well (although I get consistently a weird message when booting up: something about office suite stopping unexpectedly), but when I tried to use moonreader this morning my unit crashed. Then I experimented a bit more - as a result the unit froze completely and did not come back to life until I plugged the USB cable in (battery level is 40%)
Various apps are also crashing (office suite for example does not work any more).
Anyone else having problems after 4.1.2. install? Is there a fix?
Please advise...

Fix would probably be a complete wipe. Possibly a Fix Permissions if you are rooted.

How do I do a complete wipe? In CWM? Then reinstall?
I am rooted and unlocked
(Sorry I know this is a stupid question - please be patient)

Just boot into CWM
Wipe data/factory reset
Fix permissions
Reboot
You will lose all of your apps and data, so I recommend using something like ROM toolbox to backup your apps.

For future references would be nice if you post your rom and kernel (or stocked). I guess =D

I havent seen any issues with this.
Did you use the normal release from Google?
Or a 4.1.2 from a User compiled update?
I also have Officesuite and it didn't come up with any errors, although I didn't open any of my apps as I have to rush the install then run to college
I only tested the homescreen rotate HAHA !

I think it was the normal release - it looks like everybody else was using the same file. I have removed officesuite and I still have random complete freezes. So maybe it was not office suite...
After playing a bit more (trying to do backup of the installed apps etc.) - now the unit prompts me for a password to decrypt my storage (during boot). I have not seen that before (and I do not have installed a password.). So I think all I can do is a complete wipe and start from scratch...
Not sure what went wrong...
Will do factory wipe tonite to see what happens.

Full wipe, new Rom, old settings and apps

Hello guys.
I would really appreciate an answer to a question I have.
I installed leedroid 3.0.2 and I have the same apps and settings as before.
I think I haven't done a good wipe..
I rebooted to recovery from cwm and used the wipe before I installed the new Rom. (i was using the revolution 3.5 before)
After I installed the new Rom, when I booted on, all apps and settings were there.
Shouldn't the wipe thing clean everything and leave the phone "empty"?
Or, (most obvious) did I do something wrong and should do it again? Cause there is a little thing with the market that closes the process when I click on new released apps.
Thank you in advance guys.
Cheers !!!

Are you wiping data and cache in recovery?
"wipe data/factory reset"
It will then say:
Code:
-- Wiping data...
Formatting /data...
Formatting /cache...
Formatting /sd-ext...
Formatting /sdcard/.android_secure...
Data wipe complete.
Then:
"wipe cache partition"
It will say:
Code:
-- Wiping cache...
Formatting /cache...
Cache wipe complete
(second option is overkill)
Have you still got the setting to backup to Google servers ticked? Or any other app that you have backed things up with?
Whilst the last option wouldn't be instant (they would download again and take a good 5 minutes to appear).
And yes, you will probably experience issues if this is due to a missed wipe.
So, I will need to do a factory reset first, then do a cache wipe and then install the Rom?
(i don't remember doing all these for the revo Rom..)
Do I need to do these without rebooting the phone until everything is done?
Cheers !!!

Yes, you should always do the "wipe data/factory reset" before installing any new ROMs or if the dev has advised it, also between major update revisions.
You don't need to reboot. If using recovery to install the ROM just do the wipes then flash the ROM using menu.
Awesome. Thanks for the help.
Will try it now and I hope everything goes well. Hope I won't get stuck since am not in front of my pc.

Well, I did it again. Everything wiped out, started as new.
But still, new apps in market and battery history in spare parts give me a process termination...
Oh well, I guess that Lee will release an update.
Oh, something else I would like to ask. There is a new kernel for the Rom. Do I flash it the same way I flash everything? Through recovery?
Thanks again guys
Cheers !!!

I use Leedroid and don't have this problem. Today I have installed from scratch and gone back and forth between ROM's. i turned off all the processes that backup and restore apps and I get a blank fresh install.
I have to ask, the last time you installed Leedroid, did you use the downloaded one or a copy from your sdcard? is it possible you are restoring a copy rather than flashing a fresh copy?
And you don't have any apps that have backed up your apps such as Titanium? And you have turned off Google Backup and restore feature?
The thing is, it is handy not to lose data but we need to make sure your wipe is being done. Did you see the same messages in Recovery as I showed above?
gosh, it is sooooooooooooo weird...
i did it all again. factory reset, delete cache, installed the 3.0.3 version (which was released today).
everything seemed to go smooth. still, i went to market and clicking on the newly released apps list i get an error which is "com.android.vewnding" has been shut blah blah blah. and the same happens to spare parts. when i click battery history ""com.android.spare_parts" shuts down.
do you guys think it has to do with the kernel? should i flash lee's kernel (i couldn't find how to. i mean, shall i do it from the cwm recovery?)
i guess that the radio has nothing to do with all these, does it?...
thank you guys once again for your help
Cheers !!!

You have tried fix permissions in ROM Manager, yes?
eeeeeeeeeerm.... you got me. that is something i totally forgot to do :-(((
gosh.. i flashed the radio, sweet. tried to flash a kernel using jkoljo's tool and it stayed on the white screen (and of course cold sweat was all over the place )
but i flashed the rom again after clearing cache and the likes and (thank god) i'm in.
but the most weird thing is that, after all these, the kernel is flashed :-S
i checked in the phone info and the kernel is there..
anyway, am gonna do the fix permissions thingy and reflash once more. if it stays the same way, i'll have to live with it. it's late here in greece.
thanks again for your help guys, i really appreciate it )))
Cheers !!!
i did it all again but nothing happened.
did the permissions, rebooted to recovery, factory reset, cache wipe, install new rom and nothing.
i have to tell you guys though.. the problem with the market started when i was on the revolution rom. and it started just like that. one day everything was fine, next, bam. it didn't budge.
do you think there might be something wrong with the phone itself? (probably not and i'm paranoid)
other than that, everything works nice.
oh, and some other thing. there is this "full wipe 1.3" zip i had put in my SD card but never really used it.
should i use it this time?
this app should clean everything in the cache but not my files, right?
Cheers !!!
YouTube clip of how to manually full wipe everything.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCwr6Ru0yko
When using this method I've never had a problem.
Sent from my HTC Desire HD using XDA App
I did the wipe as shown in the video. The problem remains the same. New market apps list gives an error followed by a restart of it and spare parts battery history does the same (without the restart though)
I don't know, I'm thinking of trying a different Rom even though I like the one Lee released.
(could all this mean that I have a problem with the phone?.......)
Anyway, thank you guys for spending time helping me.
Cheers !!!

Xperia Play epicly failing....please help?

What's going on guys? I've had my Play for a while and for the most part I love it...def could be faster but thats ok.
So, the problem. I'm rooted, but stock rom and kernel. I was using go launcher, go sms and have alot of apps, a 32gb sd card thats almost full. I installed go locker a couple nights ago and it was running great. Then, the next day, I have no clue if it relates to go locker...but now my phone is like on life support or something!
75% of apps force close upon opening, the phone is deathly slow if it doesnt close...like I'll open up "settings" and it will either FC or take 2 minutes to load up...then it loads and I click something and it FCs. SOMETIMES an app will open fine, play fine. Like muffin knight, sometimes it opens and plays 100%. other times it instantly FCs over and over. Every single app no matter how complex is subject to the same problems in the same way.
I honestly have no clue wtf is wrong. It feels analgous to a computer virus. Everything is bogged and broken. I tried cleaning my phone. I uninstalled every launcher and theme app, and then uninstalled about a dozen apps I dont use alot. I left mself with the bare minumum....Id then open the "messaging" app and it would crawl open to greet me with a force close. It doesnt seem to be a problem with any specific app.
I checked battery use....very normal stuff. I don't know whats going on!! but my phone barely works....someone will call and it will take 10 seconds for me to be able to slide the slider and accept the call...
Anyone have any direction for me? I don't want to flash any kernels or roms yet (waiting for 100% stability) and I'm busy right now w tests and I just want my phone back to how it was a few days ago. I'm using adw launcher now and its the same as with the go launcher or without anything....slow, force closes everywhere, hang ups everywhere...
thanks SO much for any help from anybody...I really appreciate it.

r800x, unlocked bootloader through hardfix with Alejandrissimo....and most current Verizon firmware so 2.3.4 (right?)
since I rooted it I haven't messed it with it much, just took the liberty of using apps like root explorer and stuff

If you have CWR installed I'd try to wipe the cache and dalvik cache. I've had weird things like that happen and wiping them fixes it.

I don't think I do....I'm really noob when it comes to the in depth rooting stuff but I don't even think I have a nandroid backup...
I can boot to that orange screen and I did save my state when I initially rooted...
How do I clear the caches for that stuff? Davlik, can that be done thru titanium backup?
and what about the other cache? How do I see if I have clockword recovery? (I never intentionally installed it so I don't think I have it?)
Okay so I wiped the davlik cache (like 24mb) thru titanium backup....and then I reinstalled the market (one of the more troublesome apps to open)...and then rebooted.
Tried opening a few apps in succession upon boot, and for the first time ever the phone froze and rebooted itself!
What the hell is going on?? Lol my phone was fine a few days ago and now its just insufferable!!
Any more ideas as to whats going on?
I never dled clockwork mod so I don't think I can wipe that cache?
Deleting dalvik-cache via Titanium Backup only deletes "unneeded" caches. You need to delete every dalvik-cache by going into data/dalvik-cache and deleting every file in it. Then reboot, which will rebuild the caches (first boot will take a while)

I deleted every file in the davlik cache folder...rebooted.
No change. Takes 10 seconds to open the phone...everything is slow/force closing.
Sigh. My phone is possessed and/or dying.
Then I suggest backing up your user-apps (if still possible) and doing a factory reset
Do a nandroid backup, then factory reset. Then install apps one by one testing for stability after each. If an app is causing problems that will identify it. Or provide us with a list of your apps and we could help determine if one of them may be the culprit.

I assume you paid to unlock the bootloader (reset does nothing to this). Root is much more easily obtained
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312859
It won't. factory rest doesn't wrote the system partition where root is located.
Factory reset.
Please dont be scared of losing root, just use the search bar and type in doomlord zergrush. His script has to be the easiest most automated way to get root on any xeria firmware ever

[Q] Installing Stock Update with Acer Recovery Installer?

So, I'm new to the world of tablets - the only interaction with them being some light use on my mom's tablet (including rooting it via Iconia Root and installing Acer Recovery Installer v2.54) I was curious about updating via ARI (since she's rooted and being plagued by OTA popups). Back when she first got the tablet, she tried to update and it would stop mid-download, giving no error, and just sit there until she cancelled it (this was before the root). So, basically, my question is: Is it possible to run a stock update (Ie "Stock 3.1 4.010.42_EMEA_GEN3") without having to wipe during install? I have a backup via ARI and also Titanium backup installed but I'd really like to not have to re-install all the apps/set up the homescreen (she's on stock) and stuff. I know on my OG droid that when I installed CM7 I had to do a wipe for it to even get past the boot screen but I figure with this being a stock update maybe it's different...
If not is there some way that I can install an update while keeping the root/system data?

No. If you run the OTA, you WILL lose root. Not to mention I don't have a lot of faith in any device OTA updates. Prior experience, and hanging around various forums, well, you can read the horror stories.
I would advise, if you want to upgrade her OS and get rid of the "pesky" update notifications, is to flash one of the Stock rooted roms available. Or maybe a stripped down version of a Stock rom.
Search the developer section for a rooted version of the stock OTA, there are several in there. Install it via recovery, you only need to wipe dalvik and cache before the install. All of her data and programs will still be there. It will upgrade just fine. Remember wipe Dalvik and cache but do not wipe data and everything will be fine.
get and flash one of the honeylicious rom from the dev area .. good rom very basic apps.. but has a update to get the acer apps back.. and bunch of other cool mods.. the dev is also . kinda trustworthy..

good luck .. read read read read before you flash anything and of course back up and back up your backups .. then back them up again

Well... if the person was going to do an update to the exact same rom (different version) I would say ok.
But... if you are going to go to a totally different Rom, you NEED to wipe User Data.
Or, does anybody want to tell me you never have to?
3 Wipes. Mandatory when switching between roms, unless you are a dev and know exactly what you are doing.
Or.... you can forget about the safe side of things, and just flash away, and hope luck is with you.
The Market, SHOULD, allow you to re-download apps based on the market version you previously used. If not, it's a good time to clean house of the useless apps.

I wasn't talking about an OTA, I was talking about the stock 'rom' updates via recovery. I've had experiences with phones that have been rooted and accidentally updated via OTA, it's not fun. My phone was actually put into something I like to refer to as the Root limbo lol, bricked it for a small period of time - that was fun fixing it. I didn't have a nandroid at the time so I had to start from scratch...

If you stick with a stock pre-rooted ROM, you won't get stuck in a bootloop like you do some phones. You're just doing an upgrade.
But like doing an upgrade to any other OS without formatting first, you're writing good data over bad, so your mileage may vary.

I've never heard of the A500 going into a bootloop simply from flashing one rooted stock ROM to another, but then again most people do all the necessary wipes when they do. Did you wipe dalvik and battery stats? That's about as minimal as you're going to get. If that doesn't work, you'll just have to flash the proper way. [ROM] Stock rooted 3.2.1 a501_4.483.01_EMEA_TMPL 20-01-12

A Present from Moscow!
Acer Stock HC 3.2.1 Acer_A501_4.483.01_EMEA_TMPL
Rooted
Busybox
Superuser
Data/app folder added with a couple of apps to check root
All stock ACER apps included
You know the procedure for flashing. If not, here they are again, as it seems some people don't know.
You MUST do the wipes and formats.
Installation:
Due to issues with Version 1.7 of recovery, you may get stuck at the boot animation. Highly advise you to downgrade your recovery back to Version 1.5. It seems that some things do not get wiped and formatted correctly.
1. Wipe User Data
2. Wipe Cache
3. Wipe DalviK
4. Wipe Battery Stats
Note: Optional Formatting.
If you really want to remove EVERYTHING in Internal Memory, at this point, go to Backup and Restore. Select "Toggle backup and restore of internal storage (/data/media). Enable this setting by selecting it. By default, it is disabled. Then proceed to the formatting steps. This will format the Entire Internal Memory when you proceed.
If you want to save all the things like downloaded files, apps, pdf's etc, then DO NOT enable this toggle, and just proceed to the Format steps.
Select Go Back, Goto Mounts and Storage
1. Format System
2. Format Cache
3. Format Dalvik
4. Format Flexrom
Select Go Back and select Install from Zip File (for those of you who refuse to update their recovery, select Install zip from SD)
Link Re-established.

Not sure what your definition is of a "full wipe", but instructions can be found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1390860
I can guarantee you that if all you can get is to the boot animation that the problem is "pilot error".

Doesn't work for my tablet, can't get past boot animation.
Did a full wipe, cache, dalvik and battery stats and flashed it now a second time - all i get is only the boot animation.
Any suggestions?

Try downloading the ROM again. It might be a bad download.

Well, here's what I suggest. Look in my original post. I added the full instructions from my other rom.
It seems now days, the old 3 wipes just don't do a good enough job, you also have to do the formats as well.
(I thought I would be lazy and do only the 3 wipes last night, guess what? Stuck at boot animation) Did the full wipe and format, and it works as advertised.
EDIT: Guess what? This morning, I cannot flash anything, or I should say "hit and miss". Not even my daily driver. Connected to Recovery I believe.
Link re-established. Nothing wrong with the download.
If you have issues, downgrade your recovery back to version 1.5.
The issue with version 1.7 is "hit and miss". Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Well, I haven't checked the comgen1 yet (had to figure out the recovery problem first). Will root it and check it in a bit.
But, so far, I see 4 or 5 language supports are missing from the TMPL. Arabic and Aisian mostly. Also, on install the default is Polish (not a biggie as you can change it).
Other that that, it has a few extra files when compared to 3.2.
It seems I can get 1 or 2 extra sat's on gps when comparing to HC 3.2. But maybe because it's a clear day here.
Also, Acer included a couple new apps. One of them some 3d photo browser that force closes the first time you use it. Then it works normally, sort of. Seems it loses it's images off and on. Nice job acer. And, it's butt ugly. Wonder who the rocket scientist was that chose that app?
I'm not going to mod this one, but I will with the comgen1. Overall it runs good I think.

What is that A501_4.031.24_4.066.29_COM_GEN1 build ?
I am only aware of that Acer_A501_4.066.29_COM_GEN1 posted by Vache, but how did you figure 4.031.24 is upgraded to that one ?
Sorry. My Bad
I was thinking about the a501_4.510.01_Com_Gen1H that was leaked out yesterday.
I already rooted it and such, but it seems to be a "Demo" version from a couple of months ago. Not only does it have a strange installer script, but a strange directory structure also. 3g also is partly working.
So basically it's of little use.

Could You provide the MD5 just to check if the download is correct (it is very slow)?
Thanks

I get one in a few minutes.
The issue, is the U.S. is shutting down all the file servers due to piracy. MegaUpload, MultiUpload (server end) Now all that's left are the slow ones. Took me 45 minutes to download today.
MD5 df253e3f8825197c08a1f0a0b8c24a81
Yeah, its a pain in the bum alright, some of the slower ones already have "removed or taken down because of copyrighted material" messages coming up (deposit files)... A couple have the servers offline - upload king and upload here.
This is gonna be a major pain in the bum if the close down or lock file sharing sites, and the sites themselves may end up locking things down and removing anything they see as copyrighted material, even if its not....
Took me 10 minutes to download an 8mb kernel... I'm gonna end up a bald man before I get this rom....
And then the download stuffs up and I have start ALL OVER AGAIN.... Then to add insult to injury I have to wait 20 minutes.....

I'm not quite that bad off (still have all my hair)!
I'm going to look around for some Russian servers. Or something. I noticed one other place, but I have to find it again. They'll probably shut it down also soon.
Next thing you know, they'll shut down GitHub, and all dev comes to a standstill.
Also, I noticed today, XDA is almost at a complete stop. And I can guess who's responsible for THAT!
It's running now, needed to format it to make it work.
Didn't have to format when i was installing v3.2.
Thanks for the help

I think there's going to be a "knee jerk" re-action to the mega upload affair.... Be a REAL pain if we can't continue doing what we want with our devices...
Shame too, just getting good with the new A501 roms coming out...
Hate I might need to revert to stock to pick up ICS upgrade because the chefs can't share their flavours...
Chefs are great for sharing these awesome roms....

Well, I just know enough to make me screw things up
I found another place. 30 min download, But you have to give your e-mail for the link. Not really an issue. 3 more servers went down today.
Seems all that's left, is the small file hosts, and they're starting to limit file size.
I suspect, some serious **** will hit the fan in the next coming week, The US can't keep going on this crusade forever. Otherwise, there won;t be a site left except "foxnews" and Facebook.
IS there a Kernel i can use for overclocking?
Using CPU Master i can only choose 1000MHz, had it overclocked to 1.4GHz with the previous ROM.

No problem and glad it's running.
Not sure what is going on, but in past 6 months, it seems like we now have to format things. I didn't in the past, but now I must.
Well, it is 2012, so things change.
If you have issues with the Rom, it is pure stock HC 3.2.1. I changed nothing in it. Only SU and busybox and removal of the bootloader blob and recovery. So if a game doesn't run, there is nothing I can do about it. It's an Acer deal.
However, I do have one on my notebook, that has "0" acer stuff in it.

Issue formatting data under clockwork mod

Folks,
I've been running the ICS Kang project build without any issues (2.3) for the past while. Last night the tablet locked up on me and I powered it off by holding down the on/off button. When I went to turn it back on it now permanently hangs during boot. I can still get into CWM but attempting to wipe either the D. Cache or data hangs. Anyone got any ideas?
Can you restore a backup?
If you can't do anything in CWM then you might have to Odin back to stock....
I can flash a new rom but there appears to be something wrong with the data partition - can't wipe it and tablet wont boot.
You don't happen to have a link to restoring tab via ODIN? I was just browsing for that...

Scroll down to where is says Re-Stocking Yer System and follow the instructions.. Make sure you choose the correct download (7500 or 7510)
Thanks - I'll let you know what happens.
Its bizarre, flashed roms lots of times, never had an issue even close to this...

No problem... It should go nice and smooth and once it boots back up check in settings for system updates..
Well, thanks! That did the trick! I am back to the stock Samsung firmware and have already reflashed clockwork. I really don't know what went wrong in the first place, but I suppose that's what you get for living on the 'alpha' edge...
Thanks again! (BTW I did click the 'thanks' button ;-) )
BTW - for anyone interested or suffering a similar problem, in the end this required a full reset - all data was lost which sucked for me as I had all my backups on the device too (don't bother calling me stupid, I've already done it)....
I'm guessing some bug in the ICS KANG alpha screwed the partitions up which nothing short of a full reset could fix...
Sweet! Glad you are back up and rockin'...
phew!
I had exactly the same problem yesterday, and I thought my tab was completely fubar until I came across this post.
I was running the "official unofficial" CM9 snapshot for p4wifi, and before that I ran AOPK build 27, I think. I did not perform a full wipe before going to CM9.
I change roms on my tab very often to try to find the best, so something must have gotten messed up, but it's somewhat odd since it worked in the morning, and then when I came to work it had totally b0rked up on me.
Anyway, this post was a life saver although I lost all my data (didn't keep a titanium backup or a CWM backup on another storage than the internal storage. shame on me).
So - thanks alot raqball!

Never understood why people don't do a full wipe and expect nothing to go wrong.
Sent from my GT-P7510 using XDA Premium HD app
Hehe, well, I usually do a wipe but this time I read somewhere that you probably didn't need to when going from aokp to cm9, since they are pretty much the same.
But..... Lesson learned

Understandable... but unless the Dev. says no wipe needed, I would always suggest it, even when it's virtually the same ROM, thread, Dev., etc...
At least it wasn't too hard of a lesson.
