ok first of all, why are you talking about a media access control? it's not relevant to this discussion about macs. second, you need to get a new mac. the mac minis are great and are only about 600 bucks. you have an incompatible computer. incompatible computer is incompatible.

Unless you manage to get Google to write an SDK for PPC.
If you figger out how to install Linux on your system, it would work that way.

So, it wouldn't.
The Linux SDK is still x86 only.
Yet again Apple efs its customer base
You could possibly get away with some kind of Virtual Machine, but I have a feeling vbox won't run on your architecture either.
And $600 is WAY to much to pay for a Mini.
Hell buy a $200 netbook and install Ubuntu with a Mac theme - you can't tell a difference other than the awesome that is radiated from a Linux machine VS a mac - unless you are just a linux guy and know how it works...then you could tell a difference....ok so there are some differences...but buy a white HP netbook and slap one of those Apple stickers they give you with an IPod on it...then you cant tell a difference....well you still could but its getting arguable then.
This is why the only apple product I will ever own is my 160gig Ipod classic - and when it dies Ill just build a new EEE PC for my car.
only reason i use a mac is because i need software such as final cut pro and aperture which are not found on windows or linux.
There's no way to use the SDK on a PPC Mac without reengineering the whole thing from scratch. The PPC is a big-endian processor, and x86 is little-endian, so your byte-ordering and structure sizes are different. If you've ever delved into cross-platform compiling (OpenWRT is a good example), you know that's its a major PITA. I've adapted a few small pieces of C code to successfully compile on PPC, and its no joy.
You're going to be SOOL on the virtualization front as well. There was a version of VirtualPC years ago that performed software x86 emulation on the PPC platform, but performance was abysmal even running Win98 on my Dual G5. I doubt that a modern Windows OS would even run at all. None of the current virtualization products will run on the PPC platform, as they all tie in to hardware virtualization support at some level (processor extensions or otherwise).
I truly feel your pain in this situation. I have a Dual G5 Power Mac that's still humming along happy as can be, but I can't run any current software on it. My iBook G4 isn't quite as happy these days, but is still 100% functional. Next to my G5, I have a cheapo Dell that I finally broke down and bought to power-up when I need to run x86 stuff. I recently picked up a used MacBook Pro, and WOW I can't believe what I was missing out on. The performance is night and day better than my G5, and all current software runs on it beautifully. With VMware Fusion installed, it can do anything I need. I hate to say it, but you need to upgrade.

Probably what you're gonna want to do first is ask yourself:
"What do I use my computer for"
There are some Linux distributions specifically designed to work as media servers, as video/image manipulation stations, and basically just about any specialization you can imagine.
If you're answer is
"I just want to use it"
Chances are Ubuntu or Mint is the way to go.
If your answer is
"MUST HAVE THE FASTEST NO MATTER WHAT"
A Gentoo based distro is the way to go.

Improved sound quality on Bluetooth headsets, something about Call/Reception improvements, also something about path initialization problem thats meanless to me.
No mention of GPS fixes :-( although there's plenty of Koreans who are hopping mad about the GPS issues, and no doubt our American cousins will soon be joining in to complain.

Still waiting for ours over here in Europe..

Well, I disagree with Jobs on many of his iPhone policies (that is why I got an Android phone), but Apple still builds the best OS around. I mean, they are the only company that provide an out of box working, usable and affordable Unix boxes. Linux has still waaaay to go, but I admit that latest Ubuntu looks very promising. And btw, the iOS, despite it obvious limitations is still way more polished that the Android is. And I would welcome some moderation to the Android Marketplace, because I am really sick of all the dorks with no programming experience who publish their countless buggy apps.
Anyway, on topic: I am really sick about the Samsung "we don't support Macs" policy. On the other hand, I am glad that I don't have to install that absolutely preposterous Kies software at my computer. I am lucky to have access to a Windows box, where I just installed the drivers and then I use Odin.
Over here we can get it updated at the nearest samsung service center if need be.
Hey all!
I'm just curious. I wanna know if it's possible to run Ubuntu (or any other GNU/Linux distribution) on our little G3 (Guess 256M ram is enough).
Greeting
Like clarkkov said, there is not mouch practicality in having it on phones (except for geekasms), though I could see the potential usefulness on tablets, especially in a dual boot state. I find it kinda odd that no manufacturer is venturing into this, I think a dual boot android/ubuntu tablet would sell big time
clarkkov said:
It is possible to run a Linux distro on any Android phone. SG3 is already running a Linux kernel, the problem is a specific linux distro needs to be ported, specifically the GUI. The desktop GUI is meant to work on different hardware, so it needs to be tweaked to work on SG3 hardware. Another problem is the installer, it is also engineered for desktop or laptop PCs and installation from DVD or USB, not for mobile platforms and ROM flashing.

Yeah, see your point there. I was thinking that maybe, if we were able to run ubuntu on our G3, we would be able to use Eclipse and code on it (imagine how cool would that be! xD). But now that you point out the size of the screen (I didn't think it through XD).

Android is basically a Linux distro - Linux kernel with Android GUI instead of Gnome/Unity/KDE/XFCE etc. GUIs.
I personally would see this as a step backwards, because Android was specifically engineered to be a phone friendly Linux distro, Google could slap Gnome onto a phone, but it would be ridiculous.
You can install Terminal and Root Explorer from Android market and have fun just like in Ubuntu.

debian is really different too ubuntu. ubuntu is more ummm... userfriendly? i guess, debian is for networking freaks i dont think i got it wrong
by the way, the new version of ubuntu (cant remember if its 10.4 or 11.4, or something like that) takes up about 450MB just for the OS (gnome powered) and more for apps, obviously. we would have to use a massive swap partition, half a gig or more to be able to boot it... i dont like that idea. i can smell several sd cards burning already from it

i tried to install (dual boot) it in my desktop, but it refused 2 get installed...d popup said "get the x64 bit preview to enjoy Windows 8". apparently, am running a custom version of Windows 7 on my desktop (Razor Light Annihilation x64 bit).
on my laptop, am having a 32bit version of another custom Windows7 (dream edition) on my laptop. can i install it on my lappy?????.....the reason am bugging you guys wid dis question is am having all f mah college projects on my laptop along with my android development apps, etc, etc...so if it stops booting,i'll be in deep sh*t.....please guyz, gimme a lead!!!!!......waiting eagerly for reply
Just buy some blank dvds and burn a backup copy of all your schoolwork and development onto them if they're that important to you, its standard procedure with OS installs.
Definately put windows 8 on that badass tablet pc of yours and experience the future

Is it possible to install Windows 8 (and Android for dualboot) on de tab 7.7?
why to downdgrade the best mobil OS to absolutely limited and not so much supported OS?
I want to do things i can not do in Android. Is it possible to install Windows 7/8 ?
No directly, since 16GB internal storage might not be enough for the OS, besides the arm version of windows is not out yet, in the future perhaps someone will try to port it to the tab 7.7, but I wouldn't count on it.
It's doubtful that Microsoft will sell open copies of the ARM version. Bundling with licensed new devices is what I read. Samsung loves to release tablets, so there will most likely be a Windows 8 Galaxy at some point. Just don't count on being able to install it on your 7.7.

Not to prejudge Microsoft, but I would not at all be surprised if the ARM version of Windows 8 has the same kinds of issues as Android does. It won't have the flexibility of x86/64 versions of Windows.

No you have to understand that ARM and x86 are a lot different and apps need to be either ported (a lot of work) or emulated (which would result in bad performance)

Wow so much bad information, I had to stop reading on the second page.
Lets clarify some things and I will answer some fo the questions that were .....
.... missleading.
1) Windows RT (aka ARM version) will not be opensource, this is true. But this is not to say that it will be "closed hardware" Lets be very realistic for a moment. Hows that Open Source ICS working out for ya?
.... well ?
2) Windows RT will not run 2 things directly: a) unmanaged x86 code ... i mean DUH!! b)unmanaged code for ARM without it being "rooted"
This will take a bit of explaining ...
W8RT is somewhat interesting in how it works. think of managed code as JAVA (that doesn't suck balls) and unmanaged code as C... or Objective C for you poor iphone coders. While unmanaged code requires recompiling for every Instruction set, managed code does not.
What does this mean? Simple ... most apps that work on your WM phone will work on a tablet. That being said .... many will not present well.
3) So will windows ever be ported to the a tablet .... yeah its pretty likely ....
just not the Tab 7.7 .... and I somehow doubt it ever will be because ... well ... why would they do that.
4) but i want to play MW3 on my tablet, why can't I?
because god said use your damn xbox360. Seriously .... if you havn't figured out why that is not going to work ... then that is the best answer i can give you.
5) why would anyone want Windows 8 RT?
Have you used it? Dude seriously, it is the holy f*cking grail of mobile computing. This kit is so nice if will cure cancer. I will end global warming ... errr "climate change" and bring your family back from the dead.
Ok so it won't being them back from the dead, but seriously its a pretty massive leap in usability and compute ergonomics. Oh and its slick as ice.
I mean if we are messuring the viability of an OS .... who the **** would use a unix based hot mess with a **** frontend that is so bad that everyone and thier brother tried to rewrite it.

As an android fanboy, I will still be first in line to admit that windows 8 with its metro UI is possibly going to trump android unless Google brings their A-game with android 4.1/5.0 (jelly bean/whatever flavor it is this time). every-time I see a preview/demo of the metro UI I ask...
