You prettymuch have to have an nvflashable sbk1 tf101 to dual boot Ubuntu, I believe.

Which you can't with the serials b70 and after due to no nvflash.
that is correct you need sbk1(B70 or lower) to install emmc ubuntu although if you want you can always run it in a virtual machine using terminal and a vnc viewer

Is there a way of running a virtual machine on my transformer? I think I've seen something like this done with Backtrack 5 on a Xoom, but I wasn't aware of any virtualization software available for Android..
So you bought an Android tablet to run Ubuntu...
Why didn't you buy a PC?

Because of the many advantages of ARM chipsets? More efficient power consumption, less heat dissipation, etc.
You could get a net book with a decent battery, an extra gig of ram and whack ubuntu on that.
The more recent atom chips or even amd's are great for that sort of thing.
Could always put a small ssd in it too.
What sort of battery life do you expect from a TF101 with ubuntu?
Asus has promised to release a tool to unlock the Transformer bootloader (at the price of voiding your warranty). When (if?) they release it, you should be able to install Ubuntu on the newer Transformers.

Yes, you will get the OTA update (whichi will remove root, if you just apply it)
BTW, I could imagine creating CWM image for ARM Ubuntu, but as far as I know, nobody did that yet, so it would be a DIY job

Some b70's can some b70's can't so it is generally said that b70's are incompatible just so that people with b70 sbk2's dont complain about things saying that something is compatable with b70 and lower
makes things easier on the devs

Just wanted to take a quick poll, of those of you that use Linux, what distro and/or flavor are you on?

I'm stuck with dual booting Windows 7 (my wife did it, don't ask me how) and if I could figure it out... I've been wanting to switch to Linux. I hate Windows.

To be honest I only installed it and adb, I haven't even got to mess with it. The newish android-tools-adb from software manager are slick it made Desktop my adb location so anything on my direct dektop is controllable with adb ( I think only tested adb devices ). Although I still have the actual sdk, I just wanted to try the software manager one.
I'm in the process now of just trying to get better and more fluent with terminal and Linux language. I was never really big on computers at all growing up but when I did use them it was always to do one task and that was on windows. So Linux really opened my eyes because if I don't need the computer to do much, why run all that bloat? I would rather install what I need vs uninstalling what I don't and risk breaking dependencies and OS.

I use Ubuntu and have had it on a separate partition for probably 8ish years now(since second year of college). I sometimes bounce to another distro to try for a while, but always come back to Ubuntu because I am used to it.
I am really thinking about looking for another debian based distro(or ubuntu with a different desktop mananger) though because I kind of loath portions of Unity and the amazon integration. I don't mind having the side bar with app icons pinned to it, thats how I keep my win7 desktop setup. I absolutely hate just about everything else though.
For those that are comfortable with windows you may want to check out Zorin OS, its a ubuntu based distro that emulates the windows desktop manager.
I can never get linux to install. I've tried many times and always hangs on a black screen that shows what's connected to the usb ports I hate Windows 7/8 they suck

What distros have you tried? I mean if you absolutely have to, you could always go with Wubi and install ubuntu inside your Windows OS
I had some problems with that though, so I just fresh installed Windows, shrank its hard drive space and installed Ubuntu on the other partition

On my family computer I have ubuntu 12.10 w/ unity, docky and virtualized win7. Its an i7 with 8gb of ram so I don't care about it not being a light distro.
I chose ubuntu because its the most linux friendly distro and my mom, dad, and sisters use it a lot and I don't feel like being their tech guy all the time.
On my laptop I mostly use windows 7 because it really can't handle the main desktop environments (crappy processors and I've made it overheat a lot so that doesn't help the processors). I don't like how the light desktop environments look so I just use win7. All I do on it is research papers so it all works well lol

Elementary os is a nice ubuntu based distro.
The latest beta is really nice.
Its pretty lightweight too.
I had it on my laptop for a while since it looked nice and it was lightweight.
After a while my processors were at 50-60% all the time so I got rid of it.
It still needs some polish (no minimize button in the windows lol) but I really liked it.

Yesterday i've found BOCHS, a DOS emulator for Android, iOS and PC. It's capable to run every Windows (from Windows 3.1 or lower to Win7 starter), Ubuntu or every x86 based OS. So, as we know, the Note cant be downgraded other than 2.3.4 GB. So, i want to try the early build of Android (1.6 Donut) in his x86 version and see what happens. I'm downloading the iso right now. I will tell you what happens later. I'm not a developer, just a normal "Romflasher" user. Sorry my bad english!
Tested Ubuntu 12.10 and booted, but seconds later it says he needs a new kernel. Tested 98lite (windows 98) and booted fine and working almost everything so i hope it will work too.

Seriously, i didnt wanted to get a fully functional android 1.6 working in our note. I was bored, so i've found this app and i've thougt it was funny having that OS in our note, it wasnt a real experiment or something, just a funny try. Its obviously today, in 2013, this android version is obsolete...
well, going back oldskool is good
but it does takes time to render the "from the future" hardware that our Gal Note have
its safe to say that running older OS doesnt hurt ur phone, it just hurt ur brain hahaha

AFAIK Openelec will not run on any Android device. IMO CM11 is the Premier ROM for all anyway. PAC ROMs are pretty awesome too. Since Ouya is shying away from hardware, and focusing on the Ouya OS, IDK if we will see much more Dev work.

XBMC works very well as a Media Center. We have cut the cord and use our antenna (for local news) and XBMC for all of our TV shows and movies. Up until I got the Ouya we used a PC with XBMC.
