[Q] Worth the trouble? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So here is the scenario. I have a nexus 7 that is bought by my friend in the US and he shipped it to me to Finland. Well as you can guess the 15 day refund window is long gone and I have some screen lift, screen creaks and sometimes the screen isn't responsive. Because my N7 was bought from Google Play store Asus support in Finland doesn't want to do anything about it. I would have to send it back to my friend so he could send it to Google and then he could send it back to me. So is it worth it? Does Google directly exchange my tablet that is sent to warranty repair for a new one or do they try to fix it? Also I don't have the original box anymore but I do have the receipt and all of the content inside the box.

Try Asus

Like I said, Asus doesn't handle my tablets warranty because it is bought from Google Play.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app

Nope. Not worth the trouble.

Screen lift - open it and put some improvised washer on the screws of the tab, we've got threads here you can follow
Screen creaks - if you don't mind putting a case, slap one and you won't hear the creaking
Touchscreen problem - could be software issue, try flashing a custom kernel/ROM
Of course those are only temporary solution LOL.
I have the first two issues as well and I remedied it myself. I didn't bother to bring it to service since I bought it at eBay wherein the seller got it from US.

Where or when to buy in order to get a flawless unit? (Vacations in the US)

Hello guys, I am located in NJ until the 20th of Aug. and would really like to purchase a N7 in order to take back with me to the Caribbean. I would like to know when and where should I buy my N7 in order to receive a Perfect non defective unit knowing how picky I am about my devices and since I will be out of the country I won't have the privileges of returning it back in case it fails later on.
Please school me on this!

I'd suggest ordering from the Play Store, it seems like the newest batch of devices is shipping from there with few to no problems.
Head over to a brick and mortar store and buy it at the store - inspect it while you're there to ensure it's in perfect condition. Problem solved.
Hopefully that suffices
Lol, serious advice please!

I was being serious. Not sure what better advice you're looking for other than going to the store and inspecting it in your hands before buying it?

While there's no guarantee you'll receive "a perfect device," you should be able to get a very good one either way. I picked up a 16 GB N7 at Office Depot on Wednesday, and there's a very, and I mean a VERY small amount of screen separation on the left side (you have to look at it under a magnifying glass in bright light to see it), but nothing else. Absolutely no light bleed, no issues with the touch-screen, and no creaking. It's every bit as solid as my iPad in build quality.
You can try the Play Store, but I prefer a brick-and-mortar store where I can quickly return it if need be.
I got my 16 GB second wave from the play store, no problems

It's hard to go wrong, something like Staples or Office Depot. Open it right after you purchase it and you can tell if the screen separation is there at least, have one pass inspection on the exterior is a start.
Take it home, inspect it, check it out immediately, and exchange it right then if there's problems.
My 3rd unit I waited until new stock arrived at local MacMall retail store by checking their web site's live stock status. Asked the sales guy to help grab me the highest SSN from new stock. Unfortunately, 1st SSN C70KBC168XX had screen flicker. I asked him to fetch me a 2nd from different batch and SSN C70KBC163XX was perfect except for fingerprints but that wiped off easily. Bring your hotspot so you can activate on the spot and don't forget to do a factory reset on the imperfect unit. Only bad thing about MacMall is they charge a $6 Erecycling fee which Staples, B&H and others don't charge but it's a small price to pay for the perk of being able to swap out for a perfect unit on the spot.
Thanks fir the help guys, I will try staples and see if they received a new batch. If it comes in faulty I will return it and order from the play store.

Ghosting and screen separation issue. What to do?

Hi
Recently bought a nexus 7. And I love it.
But after maybe a week I now notice ghosting on the screen sometimes not always also the screen separation. But the separation is not to much at the moment.
Is Google and/or Asus aware of this problem and have they given any directions on how to deal with this to us consumers or retailers?
Thanks

If you bought it from a brick&mortar store, return the defective unit immediately. Let the store manager know why you are returning the unit (defective), so other buyers have an easier time with their returns!
If you bought it from google play, contact google to start the return/exchange process. I've heard mixed reviews on the ease of returning to google, but apparently google/asus is admitting that the screen lift is a justified reason for return.
Good luck. I just returned my N7 to staples (screen lift + flickering at low brightness). I miss it but its much better to wait and get what $200-$250 paid for ... a fully functional device.
What you mean wait for it.
Is Asus going to fix this issue or you mean you will wait for another tablet?
Questions from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Ok I'm getting a refund on my phones nexus.
I bought it from Tesco direct.
Tesco direct are the only retailer in UK that has the nexus in stock currently. They asked if I wanted an exchange but I worry I'll get the same bad stock.
I called Google support and they said all the nexus being shipped by them now are fixed of this problem.
How easy is it to deal with issues with Google? Do they accept return of products easily? Do they cover the cost of postage on returns? Is it fast?

[Q] Those who started an RMA process

Hey guys. Been playing with my nexus 10 all weekend and I love it. As with all expensive electronics I have been going over it top to bottom and have found some flaws with mine. Light bleeding being a major one, my back clicks when I grip it with any amount of force, and I have noticed I am getting random reboots occasionally but this may not be hardware from what u read.
Anyway how does Google handle their RMA process? Do you have to send them your current device and wait for them to come back in stock in order to get a new one? Or do they possibly ship you new one and you send them your old one back upon receipt?
Sent from my Nexus 10 using xda app-developers app
I just did one, It's an advance replacement but they do put a hold on a card for the full amount (399 or 499) so make sure you use a real credit card, not your debit.
There is a note in the email that they send that they can use another method, probably requiring you to return first.
They supply a UPS return label.
Sounds great! What igpf the one you receive is worse/the same as the one your replacing though? Haha...guess that's a question for them. Thanks!

In that case you will need to RMA the RMA! In th eprocess of getting an RMA with mine. I get a lot of hummg/whining noise from the left side of the screen (with buttons at top) so it is going back. Did not think light bleed was that bad on this one. Hopefully the replacement will be similar with regards to light bleed but without that noise.
I just started mine. Less than one week to ship date...hopefully it gets here so I have time to test the new one and RMA that one if need be....lol

I gave up with my wireless in the end and started an RMA process but haven't received a shipping label yet, phoned them up this morning and I was told that it will sent today, still nothing.

Should I RMA beside of a really slight screen lift....

Should I RMA because of a really slight screen lift, its barely 2mm.
I can push it gentle back to flush with the bezel, but the lift returns. There is no creaking or unresponsiveness...
I'm in the U.K and I'm still in warranty...

I would send it to google, just to prevent any further issues with the screen. And if you are still under warranty, just do it

do you folks have any idea how long this can take?
They send you a new one so however long it took to get your original I suppose. Mine was a day or two. I live in California though.
Have you gotten the email with the shipping forms yet?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
Hi all, just an update... I didn't buy mine from Google, bought in store... so I've had to send back to ASUS.
I have had the emails with the shipping forms, and it's all boxed up ready for the courier to pick up tomorrow... then it's off from the UK to ASUS Holland!
Hopefully it'll be back soon! I'll keep you updated.
Funnily there is no sign of screen lift at the moment as it's been pushed to the bezel... but hopefully they'll notice the problem upon investigation.
Going to miss my little tablet, as it's been perfect apart from the lift.

Oh, I see! Well best of luck to you, my experiences from Google rma have been sketchy at best. They sent me two with the exact same problem (8gb) then I returned the third and last rma and bought a 32gb. (not to mention the refund took 20 business days)

I bought mine from PC World... returned it to ASUS.... was fixed within a week.. very impressed!
slight gap between the back and the unit on the top now... hmm not so pleased with that, but everything else it OK. should I be concerned about it?
this the top of the screen, is slightly slightly bent.. so the back doesn't fit flush! it's hardly noticeable, but should I be concerned about dust getting in etc?

Dark vertical line down left side of screen (pic attached)... RMA?

Hey guys,
I previously had a black 16GB Nexus 4 that was perfect in terms of build quality. I switched to the white 16GB version when that came out, and am having some problems with my device. The biggest issue is that there's a dark vertical line running down the left hand side of the screen (attached picture). The phone is also creaky on all four corners of the device when I press down on it. Also, on the left side of the phone, one of the clips isn't properly seated and you can see a bit of a gap. Is this something that Google will replace my device for? The screen defect is pretty annoying. Anyone have experience with Google's RMA process? I can't be without a phone... How much money do they put a hold on your credit card for if you do an advance RMA (cross ship)? Thanks for your help.

I would RMA it. They cover it.
Full price is held on card.
Thanks for reply. I think I'll definitely be RMAing it. I just hope they kept some extra white models for RMA purposes, because I believe the white has been sold out on the Google Play store
Sent from my Nexus 4
Just ask them when you call in for the RMA. If they don't , get a refund.
Just so u guys know the process. I called in and explained issue. He walked me thru some basic troubleshooting. Last thing he wanted me to do was a factory reset. So he emailed me instructions how to do it and told me to call/email back if the factory reset fixed it. If it didn't fix it, he would have the device replaced. So I emailed him back after I did the factory reset (even tho I knew it wouldnt fix anything) telling him it didn't fix the issue. He then emailed back saying he was forwarding my case to a specialist who would help get me a replacement device. Waiting to hear from the specialist now. Should hear something by tomorrow. If they're out of the white model nexus 4's, I wonder if I can get them to upgrade me to the HTC One or Galaxy S 4 Google Play Editions (since their both white)... Hey, a man came dream right? I'll be documenting the RMA process in the thread for the benefit of others in the future.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
You can never know, maybe they will upgrade it for free. good luck, and thanks for sharing the procedure with us.
My screen died, first it wouldn't respond to touch and before I could factory reset the whole phone died, can't get to fastboot and it isn't recognized in adb. My new phone will be here Monday and I don't know if they will go good on the warranty as the defective one has an unlocked bootloader and a custom recovery on it. Only time will tell! I'll let you guys know when the dust settles. As for the dark line on your screen, I bought a TV that had the same thing and they had to replace it..I think they said it was the display monitor that had went.

Received my prepaid shipping label to ship my phone back to Google. Strangely, I didn't request an advance RMA, but they put in for an advance RMA anyway, so I had to give my credit card which they put an authorization for the full amount of the phone. What if I didn't have the money? Whatever happened to doing a *normal* RMA? Where they wait to receive the defective item, inspect it, and then send the replacement device, no credit cards needed. So I don't like that they give no option except advance RMA. Not everyone has an extra $350 laying around.
Another point of concern. It said in the RMA instructions to keep the charger that came with the phone because the replacement phone doesn't come with a charger. I emailed them back about this and asked why the new phone doesn't come with a charger, because NEW phones come with chargers. I asked so I could make sure that I'd be receiving a new phone. That would be a bunch of crap if they hold your credit card for $350+ and send you a refurb phone.
Looks like they still have white Nexus 4's in stock for RMA purposes. It stated on the RMA page "16GB white nexus 4 with bumper". So much for lucking out and having them upgrade me hehe.
I'll keep updating as more information becomes available.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
Very strange..I specifically asked about refurbished devices in our emails back and forth and they assured me that they only send out new devices. I also emailed them about the charger and was told to return my old one as I would be getting a new one as well? I hope for our sake that what they told me was true..mine will be here tomorrow 07/29/13. I'll report back when I receive it.
sent from my N7 :smokin:
I have yet to receive a reply to my email asking why I shouldn't return my charger, since new devices come with them. Good to hear that you got a reply saying to return the charger because you'd be getting a new one. I think what might be going on is that what they send is simply a boilerplate copy/paste email. All signs *seem* to point to us getting new devices. I wonder if we'll be getting new bumper cases as well? Did you return the bumper with your phone?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
No, I kept my bumper as I'm sure they won't replace it..lucky I ordered two sets of best skins screen protectors as well because I doubt they would reimburse you for that either

Got my delivery everything looks new to me including the charger. I don't think it's the latest version, my old one was a 301k and my new one is a 303k but as long as it works I'll be happy. Good luck with yours. Chive on!

Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
Guess what... Replacement device has developed the same grey vertical line (left hand side) issue. After further research, seems many others are experiencing this issue. I doubt another RMA will fix it, as I'm starting to believe it's a characteristic/defect of the phone/display's design.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 4
hey, i finally found someone able to post a picture of this. i had the same issue with my n4 bought in december, i noticed, called google, got a new replacement device for free and guess what? that bloody line was still there! now i'm just keeping this replacement device with (once again) the line and..i guess i'll just live with it!
Doesn't that make you mad? I really like the phone, I just am really sensitive to screen flaws. I emailed Google to see if I can pay the difference for a GS4 Google Play Edition.
