[Q] Stream video on Nexus 7? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Bought a N7, and am happy with it I would like to stream videos (.ISOs ripped with AnyDVD + ImgBURN) from my Win Vista machine. I've several Win machines in my network. 2 with XP MCE, 1 with Vista, and 2 with Win 7. With ES File explorer, I can see the computers in the network but cannot access the hard drives. Samba issues? I can access the hard drives though Tonido, but clicking on a file initiates a download. I have VLC in web mode, but cannot see it on the tablet. I've turned on file sharing without permissions.
Suggestions?

I use dropbox to play movies right from the cloud, or I just simply put them on my N7 within a minute. Don't know an alternative if you didn't meant this :s

Dropbox has a file size limitation of 2 gigs for a free account. I'm talking terabytes of movies. When I rip a movie, it stays the full, original DVD quality and size, which averages about 7 and a half gigs. I'm trying to do this on the cheap, and paying $10 bux a month to dropbox isn't an option.
Other suggestions? I want to use VLC or any other player to simply play the video from one of the Windows machine, mainly the Vista one, as that is the one with all the storage space.

Google Drive gives you 5gb for free.

I've investigated all of the streaming options for my girlfriend who wanted to watch movies that were stored on her computer while on the couch... there are several avenues for local streaming and several others for remote streaming. If you want to stream through your own wifi network I would recommend getting Splashtop 2 HD which is basically a VNC server/client so once set up you will see whatever is on your PC screen on your N7, this works beautifully for us, just start the movie playing on your PC then turn the monitor off, video and sound are mirrored to the N7. You could also use MediaHouse which is a DLNA/UPnP client for android along with PS3 media server on your PC.
Remote streaming over the internet is limited to cloud based storage services, dropbox is the only one I have experience with and it is hit and miss. To stream from drop box you must use AntTek explorer with their dropbox plugin, then you can browse dropbox files from within that app and when you open it it will ask you which app to use, make sure you use MX player.

I've used https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mobi.qiss.vega.ad&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsIm1vYmkucWlzcy52ZWdhLmFkIl0. for streaming to my phone works great.

again, 5 gigs isn't big enough for an 8 gig movie. Besides, who wants to constantly load and unload one movie at a time?

Is having them on your PC and using a file explorer with network capabilities not an option for you?
Like ES File Explorer or FX Explorer?

The problem with this is it streams over the internet from your home computer... most people have TERRIBLE upload speeds, even with very high speed broadband internet. It's not uncommon to have 25mb down and only 768kb up. I can't see streaming a DVD rip with an upload cap below 1mb, let alone HD video. The nice thing about cloud based storage is they are actual network servers and are able to serve up your content much faster than you can from your home internet connection, unless you happen to be very lucky and have unusually high upload speed at home, I don't.

VLC Direct Pro works fine for me in local network. Since it encodes the video before streaming it, there is no issues except 20-30 seconds of delay, which makes seeking a bit difficult. You can choose the bitrate also.. Over 1Mbps I did not see any major difference on my N7
I tried samba but due to high bitrates of movies (mostly 1080p) , I see buffering issues sometimes. Wifi connection must be strong and you need a powerful player to be able to play the 1080p mkv content..

Why on Earth would you leave a (crappy) DVD full size? At 7", a compressed DVD looks *really nice* on the n7.
DVD's "with all the junk," are 7.5 gigs. Trimmed down, can be less than 1 gig. They still look great....unless you're trying to watch them on a screen larger than a 20-24" monitor.

I leave them @ full size, because I stream them to other computers in my house along with pressing backup copies. A compressed version down to one gig looks crappy on my 50" plasma.
On a side note, kudos to getting your A3000 to access the internet. Something I've tried for months to do with mine without luck.

I haven't gotten VLC Direct Pro to "see" the movie I'm streaming on the Vista machine, even with every file-sharing without permissions and the web interface active on the VLC player. It's like I can see the computers in the network, but cannot access the hard drives with ES File viewer. I can access any file using my Tonido.com account, but can only download files and not view them.

You'll need to find a network card for an old 8 or 16 bit PC and use a 286, or if you can find one, 386 bridgeboard. Another option is via a program called "Shapeshifter" and run a Mac OS on it. I run System 7 on mine. Break out your old 56k modem for that trick. There was a network card for the UNIX version of the Amy...but rare as hens teeth.
IMO, a DVD looks like crap on anything larger than a 32" screen.
Truth be told.....I'm using an N7 at the moment.

I've got an old network card for my Amiga. Even got the drivers for it. Just never got it to work properly with my network.
the .ISO's of the DVD's I rip look good on my plasma. It is an older Samsung which might be why. Not too many options on changing screen resolution. It's like letterbox or normal. period. I'm not complaining though.

Support for ISO files

I have own about 400 DVDs, all of which are available as ISO files through a playback device called a Network Media Tank, which pulls them off a Network Attached Storage box. Both of these devices are visible through AllShare, but since my discs are stored as ISO files virtually none of the media is actually available.
Does anyone know if the media formats can be easily expanded?
Is there perhaps some type of aftermarket ISO support available already and I've just overlooked it?
ISO is not a media format its a copy of the entire DVD's file structure and associated files, and storing 4.5gb full definition videos on the phone is a serious waste of space. You need to extract the video portion from the ISO image and convert that to an appropriate size for the phone.

To be fair, he is streaming from a server and this is a common way to do it for htpcs and media tank devices. Some people like the menus and such. To convert them to something the vibrant can play, makemkv would be a good choice as it's fast and doesn't transcode the video. There's also handbrake if you want to shrink them.
I don't know of a way to play the isos through the streaming app that comes with the phone. Some media servers can transcode on the fly for devices. That might be an option.
The Vibrant wont play ISOs. I would say use handbrake to convert the movies you want into something that will play on your phone.

Yes, I'm well aware of the internal structure of ISO files. I actually rip the original DVD, then reauthor to a new ISO containing only the main movie file, 5.1 audio, and the chapter markers (and sometimes the English subtitles for foreign flicks). Bundling them back into an ISO is the only way the NMT will recognize chapters.
I suppose I should have clarified that I don't consider the menus or extras to be very important in most cases. I can always grab the original disc if I really care to see any of that. (Though I realize that anyone looking for ISO support would also probably expect that -- even though most of the streaming media players out there don't support it, the NMT product line being one notable exception.)
I'm not looking for a way to convert this content to something else. Well, not unless somebody knows of a single HD+5.1 format that maintains chapter skips? I never really thought to search around on that basis. Although I cringe at the thought of having to re-rip and re-code that many flicks...

The house has 9 zones wired back to a centralized AV closet for full audio/video distribution and control, but I don't have a matrix switcher and really don't feel like blowing $4000+ for something that can handle 9x9, so whatever HD/surround is being viewed in one location is what is sent to all locations.
I figured this way my wife or I could wire up our phones using the forthcoming USB/HDMI cable to the HDTV in our offices or out in the garage or whatever, and stream something separate from whatever is being distributed to the rest of the house.
Do you have a somewhat powerful computer you can use for this? There are some uPNP compatible media servers that can transcode the videos on the fly as they stream to the device. I know PlayON does it for online streams. That might be the best option for you. It doesn't need to be really powerful, any 2Ghz or so Intel box should be able to handle it. I can't remember the names as I've never had a use for them, but this phone might make me reconsider.
I use MKV files for my rips on my HTPC setup, but that's more for multi subtitle/audio track support. I don't really do chapter skips, I just tell it I want 20min or whatever. I don't know if the phone reads MKV either, I haven't messed with it's media player capabilities much beyond the included Avatar movie.

As posted above there are apps that will transcode movies on the fly for you. I have used Orb to stream to a phone before, and it worked reasonably well.
You have 9 zones and everything that is played in one location plays in all? Doesn't sound like zones to me. Sounds like what I play everybody is stuck watching. I mean no offense by saying that since I really don't know your setup and I'm sure if I do understand what your saying its your preference as well.
In my setup, which I know is off topic I have a media server and every PC in my house can watch different things all at the same time. Just for reference that's 6 different locations varying from HD to SD content.
You could use HandBrake or DvdFAB or other various applications to extract the ISO into a usable format for your phone. I was gungho to play video on my phone when I got it and honestly I've yet to really use it for what it was originally intended. LOL
I suppose you're right, they aren't "zones" but there are only two people in my house so it hasn't been a big deal. I suppose if I put PCs in every room I could easily do this but the last thing I need is even more computers. In fact I'm pretty happy that most of my computers have finally been jammed into a closet where I don't have to see them.
But the setup in my house is irrelevant.
I converted a flick to MKV last night and it turns out the phone can't take that stream anyway.
Use tversity I just stream everything from one computer to everything. Ps3 or Xbox or a phone. You can run as many streams as your computer and connection can take. It trans codes on a fly and never had any probs with it.

[Q] how do u stream movies wirelessly on a vista pc to your acer a500

hi,is it possible to stream movies wirelessly from a vista laptop onto the a500 through the home network? if yes,how do i set it up? cos i've tried everything
Well if you plan to use only on the home network their clear.fi app works. For remote access I have been using subsonic it does require a donation to allow video streaming

Do you know how to get other folders to show up from the clear.fi app? All I can see for video streaming from my PC, is a video/collections folder. I would like to be able to see my media folder that I have on my desktop.
I am using plex and it works very well.

How in the heck did you get plex to work? Did you change the default player to something else? If so how?
I load a movie and it times out on every one. When I contacted the makers of plex they say that it is not working on the acer yet and offer a refund.
I use ps3 media server on the pc and upnplay which is free from the android market for the A500 , The ps3 media server trans-codes on the fly and I use mobo player from upn to play the content. easy as 123 setup and works perfectly and also means I can play any file type. 1080p is a bit jerky but 720p is as smooth as silk. Did I mention its all free

I think that the Acer app only shows/shares the stuff you have in my documents. So you can't watch movies through it if you have them on another HD (like I do sadly).
I am able to see all of my share's on any of my drives. But my home network is wide open on this side of the router.
Might check your sharing settings on you pc, and your firewall if applicable.
i do recomend subsonic wholely just a one time donation unoocks video streaming. you select the folders to share music and movies and the app is free on android and one port needed to be opened to view from anywhere tablet phone or say work computer. also to with the ability to download the content to
I have tried:
Plex: Works but slow as hell and it didn't let me skip a part of the movie so I had to watch every movie from the start.
Subsonic: IMHO a Plex clone so I didn't bother with it and I couldn't test it to see if it streams movies any better.
Upnplay: Ugly and clunky interface but it does stream movies from any UPNP server without installing any additional software and it's free. It uses your default browser and it can skip in a movie so I'm using that. It's not pretty but it does work well.

I won't donate just to test it but the web interface was worse than what Plex offers and I've tried Plex (was not impressed) so I've just skipped it.
As I've said. The best solution is the one that doesn't require any additional software on my PC. So even though Upnplay is ugly it gets the job done.
P.S.: I have my opinions you have yours so unless don't force your on me and I won't force mine on you. I've compiled a list that would be handy for me a few days ago when I was searching for the same thing and I hope that helps someone. Bickering over trivial stuff sure won't.

Subsonic is free to try, the app is much more intuitive than the web interface when used on an Android device (the web interface of any program that also provides a native application will be much less intuitive on any platform). I'm not saying there is anything wrong with forming an opinion such as yours, but I will say Subsonic and Plex are two different products, trying one piece of one product and using that as a reason to dismiss another different (and competing) product is just being ignorant. If you want to be ignorant, run with it, but don't ask for peoples advice and opinions and simply dismiss them based on your own ignorance. Or, just don't ask for advice if you aren't willing to listen to it. Oh.. wait, that's right.. this isn't even your thread, troll.
Now, as for the OP, if this is simply to watch inside your own network, things like Subsonic, Plex, etc. are more than what you need. All you really need is what mrvanes outlined, or even just a file manager that supports network shares (like File Manager HD, File Expert, EStrongs, etc). Browse to your media and open it (a good file manager will not require to copy to local first) with the program of your choosing.

[Q] Any Mac Users Have Any Advice For Copying HD Video Files to Tab 10.1?

Any advice on the best way to use a Mac to transfer Avi\Mkv files to the tab? Since the Mass Storage Mode doesn't work on Mac on this tab, anyone have any tips on moving files to it?
I did it once, right after I/O to have a movie to watch on the plane home. It involved using VMware and a whole lot of swearing -- not worth doing again. It was pretty funny at breakfast the morning after they handed them out. MBPs were, by far, the most numerous computers I saw there and lots of people were noting that that it was crazy they were such a PIA to connect to a mac.
I dont have a mac but i use WiFi FTP Box to move files to and from my Devices.

Its nice because you can use it anywhere that has a network and a computer with FTP access. Make sure you read the Description, it tells you all the settings you need.
I use file expert. You connect via wifi. Then you can use a browser window or FTP to upload. I have the info saved on my FTP program and I can upload anything quick and easy

Best thing is to convert your videos to mp4 before transferring to the Tab to save you the hassle of guessing if this video will play "jittery" or not. I convert everything i have to mp4 because nowadays everything will play mp4 just fine.
I use VisualHub (no longer in development) and Handbrake (free and very good).
As for file transfers, apps like WifiExplorer Pro create a sort of FTP server between your Tab and Mac and use the wifi network to transfer files to the Tab. Even Estrongs File Manager has the option, just manually input the I.P address of your Mac and turn on file sharing (specify folders to share in sharing preferences) on the Mac.
Lastly, yes, the media experience on Android vs iPad is sad really.

I don't like paying either but I use my video player almost everyday when I work out. I don't have time to convert all those shows. 4 bucks for me is worth it lol

I agree, I'm just going to buy after the trial if i like.
Use moboplayer with the correct codec pack.
I've copied numerous videos in several formats to my tab (via swiftp (also on a mac)), and moboplayer hasnt failed one yet. Upconversion on MoboPlayer is much smoother than that on vplayer. As a matter of fact, my son is watching a movie on it right now.

Odd, that's the same setup I use and i have yet to have a video act up in it.

What do you use to stream content from PC to Nexus 7 ?

I want to stream movies and other stuff wirelessly from my pc to N7. I am thinking to get Plex for Android. Are there any other (preferably free ) options. like setting up a UPnP server or an ftp server on pc and then use some app that supports it.
If rooted - yes: install a kernel that includes cifs support and then use play app cifsmanager to mount network shares made available on your PC. Your shares will appear as part of the local filesystem tree (under /mnt/cifs by default) so any app can then access network content.

Sorry I dint mention it earlier..my N7 is not rooted..so any options for a non-rooted device ?

I use Plex and AudioGalaxy
I use gmote and mxplayer, works flawlessly. I can stream high bitrate 1080p .mkvs with DTS audio smoothly.

In MX Player Settings, check the S/W (network) option. It kind of worked for me. Please let me know if that works for you as well..Want to make sure that it was the thing that removed my lag..

Nothing special that I can recall...how is your network bandwidth? Do you have a good router? Could be a contributing factor to laggyness.

Use BS Player. Tried and tested..Videos work just great..!! Btw, I roughly get around 25 Mbps..And I dont think the router would make any difference as long as you have a decent network bandwidth...Hope this helps..

if you want a nice "front end" to browse your library then BubbleUpnp is the go. Hook that up with the free Plex server on the pc and away you go.
Otherwise, if you just want to browse the network with a file manager, thats not hard either.

I use "Emit" to stream downloaded movies from my Windows box. I was so pleased with the free version, I bought the adfree version for less tham £3.
I have to say that this is the only video streaming app I tried so the other recommendations here may be better but I was blown away when, while being driven up the M11 at 80mph, I tethered to my ageing HTC Desire and streamed a movie from my Win7 machine back at home. (Admittedly, I only ran the movie briefly as a test, so it may glitch after some time). Also a tethered demo to some mates in the pub last night worked flawlessly.
It goes without saying that wifi streaming also works perfectly.
Another slightly different streaming use: Additional to the above Windows machine, I have an Ubuntu machine running MythTV+Apache+Mythweb which I use as my PVR (Personal Video Recorder). I found that when using the Maxthon browser on the Nexus 7, I was able to browse to the Mythweb page generated by my MythTV box and click on the "Direct Download" option of one of my recorded programs. It then offered me the option of "Download" or "Play". (It's worth noting here that neither Chrome or Firefox offered this choice - they just began downloading the recording) If I select "Play" and then select the MX Player, the recorded program begins streaming perfectly.
Hope this helps
If you're rooted you can stream for free. I'm using ES File Explorer and Dice Player. Works great for me with little setup. Just load up the samba server inside ES with you're pc's ip address and start streaming. I tried a few others but this one works the best for me. No lag when watching movies or listening to music. :good:
I tried quite a few players including MX Player before settling on BS Player. For me it seems to be the best when streaming MKVs over WiFi.
I use UPnPlay here. Basically just plugging my devices into the allshare setup I'm using between my PC and TV.

Note 2 and Plex: WOW !

I saw a colleague toying with Plex at home, showing off his collection of videos on an Ipad at work (with a few decent black zones... LOL) over the 100 Mbit link we have there...
Well, just installed Plex media server myself on my PC, the Plex client on the Note 2 and it ROCKS !
Yesterday I sat at a coffeecounter in our mall, browsing via 3G, opened my OpenVPN to home and took a moment to view my videos at home in exquisite quality on the Note 2. My wife couldn't help herself seeing the videos and pulled it out my claws to go and watch herself...

Why did you have to VPN??? Does Plex not allow for outside access?
I never knew anything about Plex. What a very neat application to have at home and on mobile devices.
Thanks for sharing and I'll definitely be taking advantage of this once T-Mobile's note 2 is released. Thank God for unlmtd 4G data.

Plex allows everything. It's just that *I* don't allow much: I use my LAN also for home office and as a networkmanager I have too much sensitive client stuff there. But OpenVPN has no human-measurable impact on the speed and a.t.m. you don't even need to root anymore to use it.
A tip: in order to get subtitles working you need to set Direct Play on Disabled in the Advanced Settings of the Plex client on the phone...
Have fun.

Just got it set up myself. I really like it plays every video on my computer.
Any idea if it'll be updated for multiwindow?

Huh? Do you even know what is or what it's capable of? And I'd like to see you watch a 1080P video on your hard drive over HSPA using SplashTop. I have a terabyte of music, movies, and TV shows on my home server that I can access from anywhere. You can even share libraries with other people using Plex so they can access your stuff and vice versa. There are Plex clients for iOS (desktop and mobile), Windows (desktop and mobile), and Android. I have three Google TV's and stream audio and video from Plex anywhere in the house. It transcodes on slower connections so you can use it on as low as a 3-5MB connection. And as you can see its meta-tagging is unbelievable at indexing and organizing your media. Everyone I know that uses it swears buy it.
http://plexapp.com/
I'm using Plex for last 2 years and it's absolutely awesome and no comparison with any other similar media managers.
1. It's light
2. It's cross platform. You can have server in Mac, Windows, Linux whatever. You have clients in Android, iOS and most importantly and interestiny clients for devices, like Samsung TV, LG TV etc.
3. It's open source project
And so many other things. I have like 10TB of media and I use Plex with my Samsung LED TV, Note 2, Galaxy 10.1 Tab, MacBook Air and it is absolutely fabulous.
Please try it and I guarantee you'll love it.
i tried it and its crap . XBMC is 10 times better.
So this streams films from my PC to my phone?
I love Plex but for some weird reason I can't get stuff unless I am on the same Wifi connection, any idea what I need to change?
I used to use something very similar called Subsonic. Haven't ran it in a loooong time but it didn't support video nearly as well as Plex appears to.
Using a VPN is an easy way to setup a secure connection to your LAN while away from home without opening up ports etc. However not sure I want to jump through those hoops again with Plex and my Note 2. Wonder how hard it is to setup Plex to be open on the net? Hmm I'll look into it. Thanks for pointing out this app though OP. Looks 100x prettier than Subsonic ever was.
Aw lame, just tried installing the PC media server and it requires Bonjour. I hate Apple -_- refuse to install any of their stuff on my machine. Damn, that's a shame. The app looked really nice on Android.
Ok wow nevermind. I said screw it, installed Bonjour and setup the Plex media server. I then went into settings and disabled Bonjour discovery, then uninstalled it from my machine. I then setup Plex on Android and setup a myPlex account. Wow. On 4G right now testing at home, and man I can stream my movies in brilliant quality without any lag or buffer issues. AMAZING. This app owns Subsonic hands down.
Thanks OP!

Care to elaborate? Maybe a few pros and cons? "It's crap" and "10 times better" aren't very descriptive to people interested in understanding the differences between the multiple approaches to storing, cataloging, and accessing their media.

ok, i tried with my movie/tv/music collection as there is an app on my NAS for it. The scrapping i found was poor compared to xbmc. playback was abit poor on 1080p and the deal breaker was my music. i have loads of compilation albums and it showed up as seperate disks.
tried to find a way of installing a player on my win7 laptop but it seems only the server got installed.
I spent 4 hours playing around with and that was enough for me

These type of programs try to be easy for an end user to understand, but at the end of the day you really are setting up a streaming server that has a database of files and has to transcode them on the fly. Unless you are very familiar with how these things work, you probably shouldn't be the one to set it up.
Granted once someone who knows what they're doing gets it setup, its easy for an end user to connect and enjoy their files in great quality all over the air. I myself streamed Star Wars in 720p with really high bitrate over 4G yesterday and had no hiccups. And that's not even on my Note 2, it was on my Thunderbolt that struggles to play 360p videos on Youtube. So the program and buffering IS efficient and quality, it just requires the proper setup.
As for music goes, I am a little concerned. My Thunderbolt apparently doesn't support WMA music files, and since most of my audio collection is just that, I am sorta screwed. Hoping my Note 2 which is out for delivery as we speak, has some form of WMA reading capability or else that's that

This.
For Plex to metatag and display everything correctly your files and folders have to be organized and structured a certain way. It was a huge pain in the ass and took me several days to rename and reorganize my media initially so Plex could tag it. I didn't have to, but I wanted the UI to look pretty, clean, and professional so I made the commitment. Anything I added after the one-time organization was easy because I new the naming convention and structure to use. In a way, Plex made me more disciplined about how I stored my media which wasn't a bad thing.

You can manually tag stuff that wasn't found properly via Media Manager on the server side. It's not perfect but it's no less perfect than other PC and Android taggers I've used.

Odd. It shouldn't be over a fast connection if Direct Play's enabled. It only transcodes when it detects buffering and even then adjusts up if the signal improves.

Their website's not the most intuitive. A lot of people mistake the Media Server for Media Center which is the client. Here's the link to the client if you ever want to try again.
http://plex.r.worldssl.net/plex-laika/0.9.5.4/Plex-Media-Center-v3213059-en-US.exe
People should use what works best for them and for you that seems like XBMC. Like DaRkL3AD3R said, getting Plex and your media files set up initially is a chore. Friends ooh and ah when the see Plex on my devices and want it too. When I tell them what's entailed they get less enthusiastic. That's why it's great to have so many different choices.
Would love to get this to work....be VERY nice to stream my vast move collection right to my note 2. I played with it a few hours with different settings and it still stutters the playback every few seconds. My wi-fi streams netflix fine...(scratch head).
Well good news. Got my Note 2 today and setup Plex on it, and success: I was able to stream WMA music files without error.
Back on my Thunderbolt I would get an invalid file type error. It just couldn't play them.

HTC does funky things to their video and audio players that deviate from stock and Plex craps out because the files it's looking for aren't in the correct system directory. I briefly had a Jetstream and couldn't get it to work and Plex support was kind of baffled by what HTC was doing based on the logcat I sent them. Plex worked great on my One X so I'm guessing their newer devices are following standards.
I tried plex on my ipad and it worked great with my htpc. However, now that xbmc has come for Android, I doubt I'll use plex again, simply because of how efficient networking, scraping and syncing between platforms work in xbmc. And of course because the rest of my million boxes all run xbmc
