[Q] [A200] I think I'm bricked. - Acer Iconia A500

This is coming from my thread on the AcerTabletForums, as I'm not receiving any help over there now.
OP: I just got this tablet on Tuesday, and I installed CWM today (I unlocked the bootloader and rooted it yesterday). I started wiping data 34 minutes and 15 seconds ago, and it hasn't finished. In fact, the progress bar isn't moving at all. I don't want to mess anything up, so what do I do?
Update 1: I ended up just turning it off, then using fastboot to flash the stock recovery.
Once that happened, then it appeared to start working, then displayed the Android character on his back, with a red triangle and containing an exclamation mark. <-- was told that was normal.
Update 2: Seems to freezing with that when I choose Factory Reset. Should I do something else first?
Actually, it is moving.. just slowly. <-- switched to using TWRP 2.1.4 recovery.
Update 3: Been running for a loooong time (1 hour and 50 minutes), and although the bar keeps moving, I can't tell if it's anywhere near done.
Update 4: Let it run for 8 hours, nothing happened. I think I found out the problem though. I looked in the console when TWRP starts, and this comes up:
Code:
E:Unable to mount /data
E:Unable to mount /sdcard
How can I fix it?

u unlocked the bl and rooted...which rom??
the dead android is the stock recovery.
to full wipe data, fastboot erase userdata
not sure why the error, something not right....someone more knowledgeable than me will know tho'.

Unlocked the bootloader and rooted it, no custom rom.
Fastboot erase userdata throws an error at me.
Update 5: I am no longer receiving an Unable to mount /sdcard error, still getting the /data error though.

Does the patched bootloader work? I assume so, since I was booting fine until I wanted to do a factory reset, and now I can't boot into my OS (4.0.3).
I am using the following patch (It's the one that's highlighted):

It makes sense, however I can't find a full stock or modded ROM. If you could find a link I'd be very grateful.
Just wondering, there seems to be a system partition. Should I clear that too?

Sorry for the multiple posts.. New update!
After modifying the updater-script to bypass certain things, I managed to flash enough of the ROM to re-lock the bootloader, and hence un-root the device. Looks like I'll likely be sending it in to Acer for repairs, unless anyone has some other suggestion.

I had a quick look - all the roms i found are from vache and he and his server are no longer around...I did read however that the WW rom wont work on US tabs, you need a specific US rom, you may wnat to start a new thread asking if anyone has a copy
Dont erase your system partition!!! It holds your OS and if you delete that you're in deep doo doo!!! Especially if you cant find a stock rom for it....
As I said before, I dont know alot about the a200 but you might wanna post on blackthund3rs stock rom thread and see if someone has a stock a200 rom over there
EDIT: there are stock roms over at the acertabletforum, see user "obsidian" posts and threads, seems all you want to know is over there

Thanks for your help, but I fixed it. Well, sort of. I basically still have the boot issue, but was able to get rid of any "marks" (relocked the bootloader and un-rooted), so I'm either going to be giving it to Future Shop or Acer, since it's still under warranty.

i waited around 10 minutes, now everything is booting fine, reloading my data, and lets see what really imprived
I took the battery out, and then went and wiped and reformatted my SD chip, reloaded the zip image to flash but it wasn't showing through the recovery menu, so I booted and it went further in 1 minute than it did in 15 without redoing the SD chip. Just no internet....
Reflashing right now.
I flashed to the new rom, have I lost my root, do I have to re-root my phone?
because I am trying to install fonts I had on my old rom, and I keep getting the following error
downloading 'boot.img'... failed (remote: not allow)
I've had the same issues with my phone when flashing
To DamageControl. The only one that worked for ne was DamageControl 2.02. And it
Was so buggy I flashed back to modoco
If you're trying to push files you'll have to do

im going to try it in a sec, but just two questions. one, isn't this just to change your boot logo? and do i need the continuum pit.pit file?
Yes, it does give the ability to change the boot logo... But when doing it, i noticed that after flashing, the stock recovery does this weird thing where it wipes everything, even when normally it won't... after that, it worked again...... Just know you will loose your data But whatev's
and no, not necessarily..
If that doesn't work, which is probably won't, then reflash the stock recovery, then try the cwm v4 adryn recovery, then try the stock kernel, and then the system image, all in Odin... In that order
oh, and cobitts15... Your dumb... always do a nandroid backup, even if its something simple...
and you are using the wrong Odin... try doing a wipe from within the stock recovery, and if that doesn't work, then download the RIGHT ODIN and flash that file... then go through the steps easily found within the development thread and get cwm working...
can i use heimdall instead of odin? i have a mac

Define "doing stuff". That could be anything, like constantly tapping the volume button scrolling through one screen, or playing with the mounts and formatting options. The more detail you can give about what you were doing, the easier it will be to solve the problem.

Okay so I have an update, I got the phone working and calling again. I was finally able to flash it with stock kernal and system files using the proper version of Odin (thank you trailblazer101) in this thread.

Only problem now is that my 3g or wireless doesn't work, any ideas to fix this?
can you go to settings, about phone, and tell me what is says for baseband?
si400.0.6v.dl17
Hmm... I would've thought that was going to be blank....
Well, all I can say is to try flashing the clean rom in cwm, and do a user wipe...
And it wouldn't hurt to first try to reactivate... Go to dialer and type in *228 then when you hear the lady's options choose 1...
Try that first xD
Sent from my SCH-I400 using XDA Premium App
I tried to do the re-activate thing, still nothing.
I'm getting a replacement handset sent to me for free but I wanna try and see if I can fix this before I send it back just for experience sake so at this point if I brick it trying new things I don't care because I got a new phone.
So if anyone has any experimental ideas let me know
I had the same thing happen to me a month ago, but it hung on the verizon screen instead of the samsung screen. Seems our stock dumps don't contain the information to do DNS resolving. If you notice, the WiFi and 3G are both out, because you can't get DNS to work properly. I feel like if we bindiff the dumps with the actual phone we could get an idea of where we can't get, but i guess our problem is actually accessing the part we aren't getting.

That usually means you have a file that does not match what they expected (the md5 doesn't match because the file was altered in some way).

Did you do any mods to the software you are currently running? Deodexing or themes, etc? I'm pretty sure the newer updates require a completely stock rom. Untouched.

When I first got the phone, I rooted it and changed the font. I never touched it after that.
Then I got into the first Soak test and it updated the SW and removed the root. Then I was in another Soak test after that and I got whatever update that had. Now I was in the third Soak test and it failed to update.
I have no idea what to do. I deleted TiBackup because that was pointless without the root. I deleted the Busybox because that wasnt working anymore. And I have no idea what to do with the Superuser app.

Judging on what you posted, it looks like the update is failing because the OTA doesn't like the new font you've installed.

[Q] Can you install the 4.1.2 OTA on an unlocked phone with CWM installed?

I got the ota the other day and debated installing it because my M is rooted and the bootloader is unlocked and I have flashed ClockworkMod recovery. I searched for a while to see what others were saying and didn't really find anything of note so I decided to go ahead and run the install. When the phone rebooted into recovery and tried to install the update, it gave me the following Error: E: Failed to verify whole-file signature. Then there was an option to apply unsigned update (or zip, I can't remember the wording exactly). I chose not to do this and went back in the recovery menu and rebooted back into system. The phone booted normally and then immediately rebooted on its own back into recovery to try to install the update again, ending in the same results. This happened 2-3 more times before I finally formatted the Cache Partition through cwm which ended the bootloop (not sure that you can really describe that as a bootloop since it was actually doing what it thought it should be). My question is this, is it safe to go ahead and install the unsigned update via CWM? I have also since seen threads stating that if you had removed some of the bloatware apps, that the update would fail. I have removed many of these unneeded apps, should I reinstall them? I have seen a link or two to the bloat apks...
Having a unlocked bootloader doesn't matter. You just need to be stock 4.1.1 bloatware and all.
what he said^
you can update it with cwm but you have to have all the crapware that came stock still present.
Do you have to unroot first to get it to install? I have TWRP recovery on mine and can't get the update to install.

Well I tried it and it failed the check for the Amazon MP3 app. I reinstalled it from the play store but according to another post I found later this doesn't work because it isn't installed to the /system/app directory. The only way around this that I have seen is to use the RAZR M utility to return back to out of box status and start over. Not worth it to me but if anyone has another idea, I am all ears...

You could try grabbing the apk from /data/app and moving it to /system...
Or grab it from one of the many /system dumps around here...
Someone should turn the OTA into a flashable zip from CWM/TWRP that doesn't check for that.
I may do that...

I had the same thought about moving the apk to the system/app directory and did just that. My expectation was that I would still get the error but for a different app since I just tested with the one that had been throwing the error but it didn't change, still gave the error for the amazon mp3 app even though it was successfully installed in the correct directory. Thanks for the thought though. If you could turn it into a flashable zip, I would be much appreciated. I would love to do that myself but I have no idea how. I know just enough through trial and error (and a lot of forum reading) to be dangerous...
After installing 4.1.2, I can no longer fastboot back to 4.1.1 or 4.0.6. They put in some sort of backrev check.

There is a 4.1.1 system dump here. Download it, transfer any missing apps in /system/app over to your phone.
The reason you have to have those is that the current one from the playstore will be different, causing the update check to fail and abort.

Have you tried using mattlGroff's DROID RAZR M Utility? Worked for me.

I'm pretty sure you need an unlocked boot loader to downgrade.

I did. It fixed an issue where my phone wasn't booting, but it did not revert me to 4.1.1. Just found your comment in the other thread about modifying the xml file.. I'll try that next. Thanks.

That worked at getting the system apps that I had removed back into the /syste/app directory and now the update appears to be installing... Will let you know if it works.
*UPDATE*
Well that worked like a charm, update installed successfully, root access maintained, cwm allowed me to prevent reflash of stock recovery so all is right with the world... Thanks you guys!

Thank you! I had missing Amazon_IMDb.apk, Facebook.apk, Kindle.apk, PlusOne.apk files. Copied these to my phone and updated successfully!

[Q] U8800-51 crashing apps; can't factory reset

A few months back I rooted my girlfriend's Impulse 4G and installed a custom ROM. I don't know the exact ROM but at the very least the boot screen says "Kalo 'Perfection'". EDIT: I believe it was this rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1553705
Anyway, a few days ago apps started to crash randomly on her phone. When I reboot the phone, apps begin to crash after a minute or two of use and continue to crash more frequently until it's unusable.
I've tried: factory resetting it, uninstalling apps with adb, installing titanium backup pro with adb and uninstalling apps, clearing cache from recovery, factory resetting from recovery, restoring a backup with roadkil's, flashing a new rom, flashing a new recovery, updating to stock with the dload folder on my sdcard, and ...
no matter what I do, when I reboot the phone it always returns to the same state, unchanged.
And, long-time lurker here who registered to beg for help, of course. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Are you able to provide logcat?
I turned on the phone and let it boot for a minute, then ran logcat. Never used it before, so let me know if you need something more specific.

EDIT:
And, if it helps, when I try a factory reset from recovery I get "E:format_volume: make_extf4fs failed on /dev/block/mmcblk1p2". I'm using CWMR Touch v6.0.1.0.

There is no such block as /dev/block/mmcblk1p2 in the phone. But I guess your phone is different to the normal one.
The only thing I can think is that you have probably flashed the wrong android for your phone. What Custom ROM did you flash? Can you give me a link to both the recovery and the ROM (link for where you downloaded them from).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1553705 I believe this was the ROM. I can't find the recovery at the moment but it's CWMR touch v6.0.1.0. Based on the instructions given with the ROM I'm using the wrong recovery
I am not familiar with your phone, but this might help:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1889305
Meanwhile, I will try to get someone who is familiar.
Unfortunately I've tried everything I can from that thread, I think. Whenever I replace the recovery.img it doesn't stick when I reboot. Same for the roadkil's image. I tried to recover the image I made before I rooted the phone but it never sticks.
I think your partitions for data and cache is incorrect or missing.
What pink screen are you trying to restore(2.2,2.3,4.0,4.1,4.2?)

I have pink screen access currently. I was going to try to restore it with the instructions found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1457490 but I wasn't sure that the bootloader.bin they provide is compatible with the u8800-51.
Anyone figured anything out?

I asked the creater of that thread, but he doesn't know if it would work on yours. He is recommending you to use the bootloader from u8800pro.

You can download official 2.3 from huawei website, or from the thread, in Android Development section, that has the index of all ROMs.

It resulted like the other things I tried: no change. At all. What would make the phone unable to write changes? Something amiss with the partitioning?
