The verizon one has kinda crappy battery life, other than that it is an amazing phone. Which HTC phone did you come from?

Hi guys, I'm kind of new to Nexus S too.
I have it for a while now, but I'd like to get some feedback on the best ROM's, because I installed the [JB] TSM update 6 the other day and even though I'm very pleased with how fast it is the battery life isn't that awesome..
What JB ROM do you guys use on your nexus, and how is the battery and performance of it?
Thanks in advance!

I am trying Rasbean Jelly at the moment, so far I'm enjoying the speed .
Thanks!
Also to OP, I acknowledge I am very bias, but enjoy the Sense-free interface.
So far I'm very pleased with Rasbean Jelly. My question to you now is:
Which Launcher do you use?
I want to be able to change themes and stuff, but overall I really like the default ICS/JB Launcher. What do you suggest?
Thanks in advance.

You should try Nova Launcher, that's the one I've been using for a while. It has the stock ICS/Jellybean launcher.

It's all depend on taste, there are lots of good launchers like Apex, Nova and Holo. I prefer Holo Launcher as it is one of the lightest and fastest.
-If you are using a CM10 based rom, you can also download CM9 and CM10 themes from the Play Store, check out some from thomassafca, they cost money* but they are well made and get updates. There is a CM10 Sense theme too. Note: each time switching between these themes, you might need to set back to system theme and reboot.
-MiUi rom also have many quality themes downloadable within the rom, it tends to be the best looking rom.
-Go Launcher have themes as well.
-A.I. Type Keyboard have excellent iPhone and Windows keyboard skin you might want to look at.
-You can also check the Nexus S Themes and Apps section.

Thank you guys, I'm going to test both of them and see which one suits me better .
I've been noticing another issue, that kind of bothers me: The phone is charging for alot of time now, and the battery indicator doesn't get up to 100%. I know this usually happens when the battery isn't calibrated, but I've already went back to CWM to Wipe the Battery Stats and even downloaded an app from the market to do so, and it still didn't work. My previous phone was a ZTE Blade and every time I flashed a ROM and wiped the stats it would become perfect, with the device indicating the battery at 100%.
What am I doing wrong here, or what do I need to do?
Cheers!

It normally takes a day or two for the battery to settle in and to fully charge @100% whenever I flash a new ROM.
Or change kernels .... that's helps also.
And to answer ur first question... I'm using:
SlimBean ROM with stable Air Kernel. Its has an all day battery life without issues.
good luck

I didn't know that, and I've just remembered that I flashed a new kernel for the first time, so that must have something to do with it . Thanks mate!
Cheers for all the help

What rom are you on?
I've had this on my stock jellybean rom before. But after switching to a rom with BLX installed you can change the percentage to how much the phone can be charged. The percentage cap at ~97% is made so the battery does not wear out faster.
I'm using Rasbean Jelly, with Trinity Kernel. It does make sense that the battery doesn't get charged to 100%,but that ability to reset the "new 100%" is something I'd like to to do.
How can I change that with this ROM?
Thanks

Basically just a heads up, with Taboonay, performance wise it was good despite being a stock kernel (that's how much an improvement ICS is over HC) however, the damn thing was eating through my battery. In the course of 12 hrs, my tab was dead... while on standby ???? Checked the battery usage history and nothing stood out. Im thinking my WIFI never turned off even in standby because as i sent and recieved IMs my IM app on the tab was chiming as well while i was on the desktop.
Switched to Lightspeed, significantly better, 1 hr use per day over 2 days still on 62% battery. Dunno if it was an app or the IM app for sure. Overall, its a much cleaner, slicker rom, however the OOB exp is disabled so if you were hoping to run the setup wizard, put in your Google account and just have it pull in all your apps and settings automatically, sorry, no beans, you have to manually do all of that by hand which is annoying.
Other than that, Lightspeed ICS is a huge WIN!!
If the ICS Lightspeed Dev runs across this post, please re enable the OOB for ICS so i can just pop in my G account and have it set it up for me. Tks all!
----------------------
PS I did install ICS Flexreaper and Icylicious and they ran fine but after 5 mins tapping around i didn't like how they looked. It looked like a 5 year old customised them and the "eye candy" was atrocious :S
No offense to the devs, they just didn't suit my taste. I actually like the default Holo UI in ICS and I also did in HC (preferred the old font from HC too, but Roboto is good too)
To those (clarification... other devs out there, my bad) devs, please take some time and seriously consider you choice of apps and themes please!!
Thanks for all your hard work, it is most highly appreciated.

Only thing changed in flexreaper is soft touch (home, back, menu )buttons with mirror effect.
The ring you can flash to stock look.
Yes you have a right of your own opinion . So do I.
I like that you piss on me and then say "don't be offended blablablabla".
About battery life, if you would be as smart that you think you are, you would know it takes a few full recharges before battery settles. If that doesn't work wiping battery stats will make a big difference.
So let me explain like a 5 year old ,
You big man go to cwm ( clockwork mod) ,blablablabla.....
You want stock icons, you open systemUI.apk with blablabala.
You should be able do make full rom now.
But please big man don't be offended we do this for users like you.
A nice pm with question to have stock buttons would have been more respectfully.
But I don't expect that from a 3 year old , my little boy of 2 got more sense and respect then you.

I didn't use titanium. I have all my files on a external SD card. All i ever have to do with a Droid reinstall is app installs and the OOBE handled that for me before quite nicely.
I said the EYECANDY was atrocious. Not the whole rom...
Wrap ur head around it. Its like you built a car and i said i didnt like the colour you painted it in. I have every right to comment on what i think of their customisations especially if its true. I like the under the hood work and i pointed out where taboonay needs some work, but what i didnt like i said.
I did my fair share of customisation and skins back in the XP days and got pretty heavily criticised myself. I stopped skinning with Vista and 7 because to me the UI was "good enough". The same with ICS. The UI is good enough so i PREFER roms with few UI customisations. That doesnt mean i think they're bad.
Have you seen the collective's ROM? Its gorgeous!!!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1439351
But that's just MY OPINION. Others may or may not share it. Just swallow it and move on.
If you have a problem with that then go take a time out and come back when ur ready to act like a grown up instead of a little kid who hates being criticised and judged.
Tried the battery wipe with taboonay, didn't work.
Right after Lightspeed, it did not give any problems at all.
The mirrored buttons was the thing i hated the most on civatoflexreaper. and prbably the only thing, that said i didn't know how to change it and am reaching a point in my life where i'm tired of messing with stuff. I just wanted a clean working ICS ROM.
I was making a general comment to the devs as a whole, particularly the ones who go nuts when using every effect in photoshop on every button they can find.
I did take the time to say thanks for all the hard work and that i appreciated it and I didnt spend too much time in your ROMs so people knew, "hey my statements are pretty general and maybe they should look for themselves before making a final decision"
All i criticized was the theming, don't take it personally. Quite frankly i even hate Acer's stupid acer ring customisation. After about 5 minutes i realised that it added nothing to my experience and was totally pointless. I even looked into removing it from your rom but was so tired i just looked for another ROM.
And i quote "No offense to the devs, they just didn't suit my taste"
I'm sorry but when i see something ugly i say it and i say it nicely. People worse than me would do the same thing and the word atrocious would be the least troublesome word in their vocabulary.
I'm sorry if i offended but that was not my intention.
If i continue to offend in future, i simply will not mention your work at all. Congrats on the kid btw.
I don't mind negative comments brought respectfully.
Some thing you need to learn if you ask me, again my opinion.
If some one speaks his mind the way you do , free and with no tact you need to understand that there will be a response .
I hate this about internet forums, people get away with every attitude.
Let me say it this way, if you where standing in front of me and my car got a really ugly paint job in your eyes you wouldn't say it was done by a 5 year old .
Take my word for it, I was born and raised the old way.
Respect and honour comes first....... you will see m8 if you have kids if you don't have them already you would love it when they are respectfully .
Again a simple question , he civ, I don't like the mirror effect could you upload stock look.
That would have been enough.
That was all I had to say about it , do with what you want ........
Fair enough i can respect that.
I don't usually contact modders, bad past exp from way back. I leave my comments and walk away, I don't make a habit of making requests and asking people to change things. Mainly because they never do.
I use as much tact as i can, believe me i do, however im a fairly harsh case. That said i can appreciate hard work. I was brought up the old way too. I may be a child of the 90's but i grew up with an old school family. Even thou, I've had to be harsh to get by and that, unfortunately, comes through, even on text.
I speak my mind and I've grown accustomed to dealing with the fallout single handed. But if I'm wrong i will say I'm wrong.
I know what you mean about the kids. Respect is a two way street. I deal with kids way too often, I know. I'm a harsh, but fair person.
Peace.
I tried Flexreaper and agree with you on how it look. Now I'm on Tabooney but the battery life is as good as Lightspeed. Tabooney is the best ICS ROM, at least for me.
Well I say this with respect but no custom ICS ROM I have flashed has been good to my battery as far as drain is concerned and I turn off everything but the Wifi.
Even in airplane mode the battery drains by 5% within 1 hour... I never had such issues with the custom Honey Comb ROMs.
I guess the custom ROMs are based from the stock leaks so I'm not blaming anybody or trying to make anybody look bad, just saying it as it is.

Might be another issue, I use taboonay and with wifi set to sleep when screen is off and will get 2 1/2 to 3 days.

The battery is worse than HC all round for true, but I'm guessing it might be due to non-final drivers and packages. Once the final acer release is out, it might be a different story. For not the battery is good enough for me 3 - 4 days with minimal use and im good.
Or it could get worse...there's nothing to say Acer will fix any problems. Just need a decent kernel.

Ah , well I talked to veer in pm and he is OK,
Let me put it this way , if we all had the same taste there was only need for one rom.
Just one comment about flex reaper and people still saying it looks not good.
Did you try scrolling down a little to the mod part and flash full stock ICS look, if you have a little read skill you can see you can bring flexreaper to full stock ics look with no blue buttons or battery %.
I think reading is harder for some then just sitting at there pc and post some crap
And that is maybe all about intelligence and not taste.
The option is there you just need to see it.
How about an current update?
This thread's comments are really old.
When the comparrisions were made I think that was when LightSpeed was a 4.4 or less and Flexreaper was at about R12 or less.
Since then Flexreaper has made a lot of updates and Lightspeed has made a few too.
I never tried Tabooney so I don't know where that is at, but it's probably been updated too.
I tried Flexreaper and Lightspeed back a few versions ago.
I liked Flexreaper over Lightspeed. I like all the extra work that has gone into the different Flexreaper looks you can chose from. Lightspeed was just too bare bones for me. But you may like that.
I haven't yet gone to the ICS kernel so I'm starting to fall behind in the Flexreaper updates. Civato is a real busy guy and I just can't keep up with him. Keep up the good work.
Any updates comparing the latest versions of the top ICS versions would be appreciated.
Thanks
Not new to Android, the forum, etc... Just new to THIS device.
I am looking to get solid opinions on two things...
The best ROM for this tablet. But something stable, working properly, not a lot of bugs. There is a lot of cool development going on for this device, but trying to wade through it all can be a bit of a handful. I don't care about overclocked kernels and things like that. I just want something fast, stable, full featured, etc... Taking the stock ROM, and making it even better.
In the past, Cyanogen was the go to ROM for my DroidX. Blew me away. On the Rezound, my current fav is ViperREZ. Maybe that gives an indication of what I am looking for?
Second question, the launcher. My main goals are speed, eye candy and features. I have used Go, Apex and Nova on my phones, and Sense 4,0 is actually pretty slick. ADW was nice as well.
But are any of those really optimized for a tablet? I am looking for something that is very functional, but that also makes me say WOW! every time I use it.
Suggestions?
Sigh. So many threads asking about the "best" ROM.... why don't you just try them all and see which one you prefer. All have faults some more than others. You'll get different answers from everyone because everyone has different preferences on what's good.
It takes all of 1 minute to flash a ROM... you could quickly sift through the available ROM's to see which one catches your eye at first.
im using paranoid android. its based off of cm10 plus you can change switch between tablet mode, phone mode, and phablet mode on any app you have installed. until there is a full version of cm10 or aokp this looks like it will be my rom of choice. i agree with the post above, just flash some and see what you like i just chose to answer your question an not be a d about it. good luck and happy flashing
Well, playing with all of them, if there are known issues, which most of them have, can be like finding a needle in a hay stack, you know?
I will say though, that this launcher is impressive. I used it on my phone awhile back, but it had some glitches back then. It has been updated since then and on a tablet it makes a lot more sense.

For now, hell, the ROM may not matter much as the UI is completely revamped and very cool.
I did say that it might be a dumb question. LOL
I wish CM10 was fully baked for this device, that would rock.

Cool, I will check that one out.
Anyone know how to take a screen cap with this device, on the stock ROM?
Is this app even working on tablets? Btw its cool but u will loose a lot of stock android features, at least i miss them there.
You could wait for charmeleon app, thats kind of a launcher app. You could google it. It will be released in september i think. It was a kickstarter project and i am a backer so i will get it this week already, i can report later if u want.

Actually working pretty well. The 3D effects really come alive on a larger screen. If I could take screen caps, I would, but have not figured that out yet on this thing. hehe
Power+Volume Down should take a screenshot.
I've flashed 3 or 4 roms, and always restore my stock backup.. I haven't found any that are as smooth as the stock build as of yet.

I agree with this post, the only way to find out what's best for you is to try them all. I did that I came to conclusion that the Jellybro nightly kang is what's best for me with 170 DPI mod to bring out tablet UI. Loving it now. I tried the other "hybrid" ROM but didn't like it because I naturally love the big (or small) resolution which give me a more virtual screen estate at all times.
Good luck

Hmmm... what is this 170dpi mod you speak of?
Vol down and power does not screen cap like it does on my phone. Weird.
And last thing... How does one get into Recovery? I can do it from the OS with Quickboot, and selecting Bootloader or Recovery, etc... I just backed up the phone to a Nandroid using CWM, the one that is touch screen.
on my Rezound, I can pull the battery, hold vol down and power for a few seconds and get into Recovery in the event that a Flash is wonky and bootlooping or whatever...
How does one do that on this device?

1) I am not new.
2) And had I just asked for the "best ROM", I would expect your non-helpful reply. I felt that if I explained the criteria of what I was after, then perhaps some other people that went through the selection process could point me in the right direction rather than trusting to trial and error.
See, I apply the same standards to others that I apply to myself. In the 17 or so years that I have been on forums(going back to Tom's Hardware Guide on the original Delphi forums), and even having moderated several over the years... I have never once told someone to use the search button, or "just figure it out", etc...
I always answer questions, perhaps in more detail and length than most would, and so I guess that I sorta expect the same courtesy of others.
If someone says that they are looking for X,Y,Z, I don't tell them to go try dozens of ROMs and hope that sooner or later they stumble across the one that has X,Y and Z. I try to say, "Hey, ROM's are all subjective, but here are 2 or 3 that are exactly what you are asking for"... or something to that effect.
Regards,
Dave

I find that cwm won't open up for me if I power off then volume down then select recovery and all that. It just hangs on the black screen. So I just use adb or ROM manager. Or then advanced power menu.

I am really surprised at how amazing jelly bean really is on the s3, with ics it was fast and smooth already but now it blazes.
it is faster and smoother than my iphone 4s on ios6 and my wp7.5 hd7 of old which now belongs to my brothwe. it equals in smoothness that of my iPad 3 and in many ways is faster add depending on the app it generally opens them faster.
it is s real winner. battery life could be better but I'm more than happy at the moment and it was well worth the wait!

The official version is indeed better than the leaks we got earlier, and gives me hope that the later versions are going to be even better, not to mention 4.1.2 and 4.2.

Errrr... No, it's not great. If you knew more about the phone you would know it's not as great as on the galaxy nexus. It's easy worst.

I have both. I think that the SGS3 was already faster on ICS than the gnexus on JB. The gnexus is slower to load apps and lag a lot on places like the widgets menu.
I can only recommend Paranoid Android on the S3, I'm simply amazed by this ROM...

That's your opinion. I've tried both, and the S3 is faster, and better imo.
Certainly on AOSP it is without a doubt, ill always choose AOSP first and foremost now there can be no going back to Sammy ROM's only as a secondary ROM, i can live without FM Radio (i always use Tune in Radio PRO anyway much better highly recommended app) and other small things you don't get IN AOSP the good far outweighs the bad.
I have to agree Project Butter is a lot better than in the leaks, but there is optimization to do, like the widgets draw, which still lags until it is fully pulled into memory.
I can't wait to see what the updates have to offer.
And would u mind telling us how u managed with the freaky lag we get when we try to open phone dialer after it being closed 4 a while? Why do they call it a phone when the thng it does the worst is opening the phone app!
Just be thankful you don't have the WiFi issue that it gave me.
Beforehand, no problem connecting to the WiFi.
Now, I have had to disabled "power saving mode" in the menu *#0011#, because whereas previously on ICS, it would connect if the WiFi got dropped (say, it went to sleep, or I disabled it), unless I do this, if it gets dropped, it would not reconnect until I reset the phone.
Very, very annoying.
I've raised the Issue with Samsung.
And it's not just me with the issue.
supernexus build 5 is a winner

while on ics i used ex dialer, on JB it still loads slowish but it takes 1 sec rather than 4 for me and im fine with that so i stopped using ex dialer for now.
I prefer AOSP rom too but you will miss a lot of s3 features. That's the reason I stick to stock.

I completely agree i owned various devices and always used Asop or akop. But on this phone, if you use asop or akop you miss the features on the phone. So i tend to stick to stock all the time simply because i need most of the features.

I always switch between Sammy and AOSP for this reason but now with dual-boot I have the best of both world.

No need to go to Samsung, you are on XDA. All the experts are here. I'm not an expert but I would say to just flash another ROM or Modem.

Wow! Google should have never brought project butter up in the first place. Now we have some weirdos having a weird placebo effect thinking that the GS3 firmware does not incorporate PB when it would be absolutely retarded and more difficult for Samsung to take it out of the source code and add in half butter. That is like the most hilarious thing I have ever heard. No developer would rewrite PB to operate at half.
There is a possibility that touchwiz animations do not look as smooth as AOSP animations to some eyes but I highly HIGHLY doubt it that they would change the genetic code. lol
People need to stop tripping or otherwise Google is not going to even bring up any transition improvements to prevent this crap from happening to their OEMs that use Android skins.

Will I still get all the goodies like 60 fps and other stuff on nova launcher instead of touchwiz?
just ordered my note 10.1 yesterday. should be here next week!
i have an s3, and i just updated it to the latest version of AOKP.
of course i'll be rooting it but i was wondering if anyone thought the tradeoff to using a different rom was worth it. i got the note for work (mainly notes and powerpoints) so i'd hate to not be able to use any of the features that really set it apart from other android tablets!
My personal experience left me inclined to stay with a touchwiz based custom ROM, some extra power and flexibility without losing anything. CM and AOKP are nice as always, but on this particular tablet I really find features like multi window, smart stay and air view to be well worth their weight. There's a growing selection of roms that retain all of the Note's features. I really liked Android revolution a lot, am currently on Collective edition. You can even enable all apps to multi window, which is just savvy!

That's what I was thinking. It'd be a shame to go vanilla and lose all the features I paid extra for! I'll check out some touchwiz based ones then.
Yep, I Cant Understand Why People Pay Premium $$$ then Go Vanilla Android And Loose All those Features They Bought The Note For In The 1st Place.... Each To Their Own...
Just Be Aware Too, Because Of All The Tweaks And Things Running In The Background You Might Find Your Battery Draining A Lot Faster... At Least, That Was My Experience. Went Back To Stock Rooted And Battery Lasts Longer...

I'm thinking I'll do the same thing I did with my phone: wait minimum 2 weeks before I start messing around. That way I have a good base to judge things like battery life compared to stock.
Thanks for the advice everyone! My Note should arrive on Monday!

Heh okay. I never did that with my S3! I probably should then.

I bought this tablet for the Wacom technology and s-pen, combined with the excellent hardware. All of that is perfectly fine in AOSP. Palm rejection, s-pen support, etc.
I did not buy this tablet to have multi view, but I can see where that would be a non-negotiable.

I'm sure at some point I'll experiment with an AOSP rom. I always wind up back at those...

I tried "Android Revolution HD" and "Omega" ROM, both are very nice and are touchwiz modified roms.
You should check them out.
Android Revolution HD
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2119547
Omega
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2131474
One or both of them may use Aroma installer so may want to stick to Zedomax "HighOnAndroids CWM".
Zedomax also has a post "How to ROOT Galaxy Note 10.1" http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1831152
And here is one of his many .coms that he has that has an embeded step by step video on how to root you note 10.1, his root method includes CWM that does work with Android Revolution HD and Omega ROMs. http://rootgalaxynote.com/galaxy-note-10-1-root/how-to-root-galaxy-note-10-1-easiest-methodcwmmethod-2/
TIP: I download the video of Zedomax root process onto my computer along with the files needed to root so I have them all in one place.
.
Whoa! Thanks!!

Completely opposite to my experience..
Most of the roms remove many bloatware apps and battery life improve
Thats been my experience as well. My S3 is way better on AOKP.

+1 - It Must Be The Custom ROM He's Using; Perhaps The Keyboard Is Broken In It
Kidding aside though, normally I only deal with AOSP-capable devices, but you have to admit that the TW version (and features) we have on the Note 10.1 are pretty nice- so I'm using ROMs that are as close to Stock as possible (namely, Darkman's ROMs and lately AR HD 5.0).
Also, most complaints about "bloatware" are completely unfounded and appear to come from users who read not-quite-fully-understood posts on forums like these. I've never used Crayon Whatever-it's-called nor the Music Hub, and the effect of either is negligible. They don't take up much in the way of storage either (esp. on devices with at least 11GB of free space out of the box).
Actually it's the stock rom for Australia... Was using my note to post... Samsung seem to have a bug in JB they released for us poor buggers down here. Only real problem with the stock rom though...:silly::laugh:
Not gonna complain too much though, It took them long enough to release it...

im a little confused about this flash counter. i just rooted and what not and was checking out triangle away. but not sure its purpose? does something happen if the count gets too high? or is it just for warranty purposes... ?

99% of the time its being used it's to keep the All-Share Cast Dongle working, which (due to DRM reasons) won't run if the flash counter is greater than 0. It really doesn't affect anything else, AFAIK.
Hi all
As in title i need some advice to change rom on my le pro 3.
The point is that I've always had nexus devices (4 and 5) and the latter stopped working. I've loved that plain and simple android so much that i never even bothered to change roms on those devices. So now i bought this Leeco Le pro 3 since I am not willing or better can't afford to spend so much money on those new pixel phones.
And here is the problem: I would like to install a rom as similar as to that "nexus" experience possible. Just plain android with no extra stuff I don't (think) I need. I'd then just download the apps I was previously using from play store.
Do you think there is something out there that could do the job?
Thank you very much
Well we have the Lineage team working on roms, we had a great rom the GTX ones but trolls got the OP pissed, in my opinion the battery on this phones is much better with the stock roms rooted and debloted, i get something like one day and some hours of battery life, I only use twitter, FB and hot spot when i need too, is also connected to BT streaming music when on the road. I tried using the Liniage and slim, and some how battery suffers im not sure why, but eventually those devs will figure it out, I came from the 6P and nugat screw up that phone badly, the UI on this phone gets a little to get used too nut IMO is worth the change.
Give stock rom a try. I also like very clean roms but this stock is really good, just install nova laucher and customize it like the new pixel launcher, it gives you a pretty good clean android experience, with some little tweaks.

Hi Cubanghost and thank you for your answer.
For now I did a backup of whats in the phone as it arrived. I might have found something here and it looks like the closest stock android experience that is available to me. The "grossoshop" version I have is just too confusing to me so I think I will just try the one i linked above and if it is not satisfying I will revert to the original and try to get used to it.

Not a problem i was lost on the IU for about a month since i was so used to my 6P but now i cant tell you the relief i have to move away, also the idea the Engineer had was also a good one i have nova swiping up like the pixel launcher. but i also heard good things about the chinesse rom's and battery been awesome. go for it and welcome to the LeEco family, this phone does not disappoints IMO.
