KiES is a TERRIBLE piece of software! - Galaxy Note II General

Seriously, it's the WORST written piece of garbage I've ever had the displeasure to use. Worse even than iTunes for Windows!
This is my first Sammy device, and though I love my N2, I really can't stand KiES. Right now, after installing it on my work laptop (XP SP3), it's sucking up 54% of the CPU time and all its doing is actually downloading the latest update. It's not even trying to install it yet!
54% CPU load to download a file is just taking the piddle.
Last night I installed it on my Windows 8 machine. All it did there was lag a lot, take over 5 minutes to connect to my N2, and then crash. Lots.
Whoever wrote this piece of ****e needs to be fired!

What Version number?
I don't use it myself but I had read that a new version had just been released.

As I said, this is my first ever Sammy. I've seen mention of ODIN around, and gather it's for flashing ROM's, but other than that I know nothing about it or where to get it...

I saw 2000 posts so I thinked u would now still Just google ODIN and that's it there is new 3.04 version , very easy to use and that's only thing you need for flashing and 3 clicks to press.
You can also try with KIES AIR (need to download from samsung apps or play) kies air is using wifi connection between your laptop/mobile

That's not the right answer!
It might be the latest one today but people who read this thread in future find answers like that rather un-helpful.
That's why software writers use version numbers so people know exactly what is being referred to.

I tend to stick to the fora I own devices for. Takes time to get up to speed on new manufacturers... You get used to working one way, y'know? Still, have Googled ODIN and will grab it later tonight. Cheers.

Well, I suppose I could run it up again.... But that'll take a good half hour...
Seriously though... It IS the latest version... 2.5.0.12094_27, and it's a lemon!

Just don't use Kies. That might read like I'm being facetious or reductive but I mean it as a serious suggestion because there's not a thing it does that can't be done another way. I'm about to be on my third Samsung device and my gf/sister are on their second and none of us have ever used it. It's not like iTunes where you really need to install and use it at least one; you genuinely never even need to think about it and can still do whatever you want.

Sure. But when I first get a new phone, I'll usually use it just like your average Joe user for a week or three to get a feel for it and the company. So far, loving the phone, but not so much its infrastructure!
Hell, my main reason for not wanting an iDevice is because of iTunes!

still it would be nice to know the real back story behind why KiES is such a horrible mess.
There should be no reason for that, except maybe that there are soooo many countries and models of devices to connect to...
I don't know. With a product line this huge, there should be some semblance of reliability.
Actually, Korea in general, is way behind on software. You should see their #1 word processing program by Hansoft. Lord. And they are all still using only IE and XP over here. Its maddening.
And for my final smackdown...check out Naver and Daum search engines...you have to literally scroll through 2 pages of advertising before you come up with the site you were looking for. Try it.
They don't know any different. And they are less than hospitable to Google. I can't even access Drive from work. Sheesh.
:silly:

Yesterday had to use it, for first time actually. Had 2 galaxy note's and no OTA update to 4.0.4.
General impressions = KIES is in competition with itunes. Problem is that competition goals are "Who can make worst software".
Abomination.

Wow, thanks for sharing something that is allready commonly known mate Kies has never worked well from the beginning till now. Biggest problems are the Samsung servers and usb drivers wich results in no downloads/upgrades and often the phone isn`t even recognized by Kies.

I thought this was common knowledge, but I'm gonna spit it out all the same:
Samsung:
- Great hardware manufacturer
- Not generally the best software creator
(although to be fair they do make some really good apps imho, such as the music player, s planner, and clock application to name only a three)

Very late to the party.
Had to put up with Samsung kies since the start of the original Galaxy S era 3 years ago...
Sent from my Note 2 using xda premium

first time sammy user....used to heavy modding on my htc hd2.......was trying desperately to root my note2,....at last could get it done after kies was uninstalled ..wasted my whole evening for a 1 minute job

I was about to send my HD2 back to O2

iPhone 3g contract was up and started looking for a new handset, 3Gs? meh.
perhaps if apple had some sexy stuff to say at their conference about a fw update, but no
just some waffle about an iPad or something? lol
so 3 days into my 14 day return time with the HD2 it was locking up, freezing and genraly sluggish.
i guess i was just used to the iphone 'just working' alough saying that, it was jailbroken and 'trying' to act like a normal phone.
yer yer i had all the apps i wanted (via appsync) and boy was the iphone 3g struggleing.
anyways here i am with the hd2, locking up. so i found my way back to an old friend THIS FORUM.
amazed to find that my hd2 had a rom number way below what was out there.
aware that flashing a new rom 'could' invalidate my warranty i downloaded the stock O2 rom just in case.
tried to flash a htc stock updated rom and it failed
then discovered the HSPL crack, and tried the flash again, YES! it worked this time.
now, humm i dunno. the phone looks the same but feels different, sure all the O2 branding is gone and some features are unlocked but it now feels much better to use.
faster, smoother and more slick.
got tomtom on there and MYplayer watching bbciplayer OVER 3G not locked to wifi use like the iphone.
this things got me interested now i think ill keep it

No-one can answer that question yet. All we can do is summise, and most would say yes.
There hasn't been an official release of the WM7 requirements yet, so we can't be 100% sure. There's been a pinksheet, which is a rumoured requirements list, and the HD2 is fine for that (albeit the minimum ROM, not the recommended).
We'll really have to wait and see. The official specs for WM7 can't be that far away.

I'm the same as you, I had the iphone 3G, and was due an upgrade, but the 3Gs didn't really offer anything new so went fo the HD2. I've had it for a few weeks now, and had a lot of issues, or should I say glitches. Some have just been me not used to a windows phone, and some have been glitches with the phone. However, most of those have now been rectified thanks to the fantastic help on this website, and especially Wacky Banana on the PM's (Many thanks). I am now starting to enjoy the phone, and can see it's fantastic potential. Despite the lack of apps (which I do miss from time to time), I am now starting to think this phone is better than the iphone, and IF WM7 becomes available it will be a very exciting prospect.
Whilst on the topic of WM7, I emailed HTC directly and they assured me that WM7 will be available on the HD2, and will be a free 'upgrade'. They did say not to expect it until the end of the year at the earliest though. Despite this, I have still been informed my some on this forum that WM7 for the HD2 won't happen. So I guess it's a case of wait and see.

Erm, you DO realise you can download apps from the Internet, and that the Marketplace holds just a tiny subset of all the apps that are available for WM phones, right?
Most of the apps I use (Cash Organizer, Coreplayer, Pocket Informant, KeePass, Tomtom, GCzII, Skyfire) aren't available from Marketplace. You have to get out of the iPhone mindset of everything being controlled and spoonfed to you. Try handango or googling for "Windows Mobile Software", you'll be amazed at what's out there.
+1 You wont find emulators like Morphgear on the Marketplace but at least you can install great apps without having to jailbreak etc
Im surprised your O2 HD2 freezes? The only reason Im still on the stock O2 rom (although I might give 1.66 a go) is because I've not had any major issues with it.

Yes. The same way you installed custom ROM of 6.5.5 (6.6) there will be WM7 ROM on XDA most definitely.
The same way my old Trinity P3600 runs WM 6.5.3 it will be possible to run WM7 on HD2.
I was on the stock o2 rom, and no major issues except for SMS not sending on the second day, and sometimes it would fail to update the weather. Everything is that bit slicker on the newest ROM.
I heard o2 don't bother with firmware updates, I'm not going to wait for nothing so I flashed successfully straight away.

Yeah I do, and have found some good ones. I just miss certain apps like ebay app, yell.com app (I know you can go onto these via the internet but the app just made it easier), but one that I miss the most is Sky+ app where I can remotely record on my sky+ box at home. I can do this via text, but is costs money, doing it from the iphone app was free.
It's no big issue, and I am starting to prefer my HD2 to my iphone, just wish you could have the best of both worlds

OK heres the big problem i have now....
every now n then i goto my phone and 'slide to unlock'
it asks for my pin, i input said pin but it says its wrong? i know its not.
again SLOWLY, it says 'wrong pin' or words to that effect. NOOOOO
only way out of it is to do a cold boot. (remove the batt)
granted i only tried rom Le2_UK_1.43.206.4 for about 2 days, but never had this happen
untill now im on 1.66?
REALY flustering.
on the few times its happed ive noticed theres a sms or missed call whateing.
perhaps this is triggering the pin error?
ill let you know if it happens without a missed call or sms, but the 5 times its happened
in the last 18 hours its allways been the same.

most of these "apps" can easily be made by you to run on your HD2
MS have even given you the facility to do it with 6.5..
widgets, often overlooked, and not perfect, you can turn some net pages in "apps" just like the iphmoan makes you get from the nappystore.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd721906.aspx
but this is more powerful as you can do them yourself..
It's something sorely lacking lately on here, the "DIY" ethics we used to have, but there's other guides..
Maybe we should have a competition for some new widgets..

I was in the same boat as the OP. My phone had 1.43 and was 15 mins away from being returned when I decided to give 1.61 (and now 1.66) a go. The later ROMS are without a doubt the ones that the HD2s should have been launched with.
While they're still not 100% perfect, they're infinitely better, smoother and more stable than the 1.43 operator branded ROMs.

Yes it is. And it works perfectly.

I officially hate the vibrant!

It's official, after being on Android since its inception, I officially HATE the vibrant and I HATE Tmobile for not having phones like the EVO or Incredible and giving us that crappy HD worthless 2. I've had so many issues with this phone. And now the frustrations continue and I give up.
I flashed Eugene's Vibrant5 and the damn lag fix and rebooted my phone only to find that:
1. My entire voicemail box was erased and I had several unheard voicemails from today. I have to set my voicemail box up as if I never had one. I've never had this happen before and I don't know what on earth gives but i'm irritated
2. Now Windows 7 does not recognize my device so I can't get into ADB to flash JAC's Kernel. I went through a lot of frustration yesterday to finally get Windows 7 to recognize the device and now I'm back to square one. I refuse to go through the same crap to get Windows 7 to recognize my device, I installed the latest drivers so that's it, f*ck this phone. Who makes a phone with no L.E.Ds and a piece of sh*t battery life anyway???
I HATE THIS PHONE!!!!!!!!!!
So, you hate the phone because YOU took the risk of modifying and now you don't like the results?? Flashing your phone has nothing to do with your voicemail since your phone doesn't host voiceemail box, so not sure what you did there.
Did you research the phone before you bought it? Hope your within the 14 day window to return it.
Cya later then.

The voicemail thing is a Tmobile issue, not the phone. It's how Tmobile has decided to implement VVM on android. It's lame and happens even if you had gone back to a completely stock rom. You shouldn't have lost your messages tho, just install the app and refresh your inbox, they should all be there again.
As for your other problem, are you using Windows 7 64bit? For some reason there are issues with some 64bit Windows 7 machines and the Samsug drivers.
I've got 2 computers running 64bit one works perfectly the other some things work some don't. I have several other Windows 7 32bit systems and they all work without any issue. I think this problem has been mentioned in several of the Odin threads for what it's worth.
Sounds like someone got over their head with different MODs to their phone and can't figure out a way back. Complaining about a phone because Windows won't recognize it sounds like you have a problem with Windows and not Samsung. Maybe you ought to flash the stock ROM and wait for more "user-friendly" MODs to come along. Day by day I am slowly not wanting to even look here for info on my phone due to moronic posts like this.
I'm with tweak on this one... Sounds like you're angry at the modifications you've tried to apply and failed at. The lagfix is a beta mod thats extremely risky since it uses EXT2 format and the data can be easily corrupted if the phone powers down abruptly. The stock vibrant is a very fast and stable phone (I came from a Nexus One and i love the vibrant).
Are you sure you "set up" your visual voicemail app? I find it hard to beleive the phone some how "deleted" your VM's. that just doesnt make sense, since they're not even stored on the phone. try dialing 1.
Good luck with your next phone.
No one cares. I don't get why people randomly rant.
Ill buy it for the $100 its on sale for today through tmobile. Pm me!
Bye bye, have fun with your new sheep phone ...

No it's not Tmobile, I had flashed another rom and went back to stock using ODIN and my voicemail was fine, it only happened after I flashed Vibrant5 and the lagfix. I've had a lot of issues with this phone since day one so I'm obviously majorly annoyed. I know how to get back that's not the issue, I'm really annoyed with the phone in general, it's a great upgrade from the MyTouch and design wise I like it a bit better than my Nexus one but MODing this thing is irritating, I've never had issues with my Nexus, MyTouch or G1 so it's not me. The samsung drivers are just lame. I prefer using ADB and it's just really annoying. I have 3 other phones and I can easily sell this one for much more than I bought it for, I paid $109 corporate discount and I'm tempted to put this b*tch on Craigslist for $350 and I know it would sell today. But then I'd be left with my nexus one which I like but am bored with, I modded the hell out of it already, so I don't know, I think I'm just going to switch back to my Nexus one until my stress levels decrease.

I've got 2 Vibrant's beside me as I type this. I've tried several different versions of the lag fix as well as a few of the roms (deodexed, Vibrant, etc) on both. EVERY one of them requires VVM to be re-setup as does the stock rom if/when you revert to it via Odin. In every case your messages are still there once you have reloaded/re-synced the app. Not sure why you would consider that something to blame the phone for, it's part of setting everything back up after a flash as far as I see it.
P.S. If you don't think part of the problem is Tmobile, go check out a Droid or Droid X and see how different and better integrated VVM is on those devices.
P.P.S. For clarification above I meant to say everytime a new ROM is flashed, I've never had to re-setup VVM for the lag fix etc..

The only issue I have had so far is that my time zone tick does not stick when I reboot the phone so everyday I have to re-untick it so that the time dont change on me when I drive into Texas, which I have to do 5 days a week for my employer. Other than that it works perfectly on Windows 7 64bit here. Still wish we had linux support though. lol

Yeah, for that price I would also sell it, but I would turn around and buy a new one. I LOVE my Vibrant. All it really lacks is Dev support and it sounds to me that is your only real issue also, crappy drivers and lack of dev support. My GF loves her Evo, so you should probably change carriers and get one of them instead. Oh and my brother loves his Incredible to, both are very nice phones.
good luck
I think user is suffering from the ID10T error.
Has anyone found a fix?

Not sent from my Vibrant using XDA App 'cause I returned it.
vibrant is not a bad phone...its a REALLY good phone, does everyhting i need it to...
So basically what I get out of this is your upset because you don't know how to install drivers on Windows 7 and that the device is not fully mod ready from day one? HTC Android devices have been here since the start (G1), that is why there is such high support and why the turn around is so quick for them to be modded. The Galaxy S series is Samsungs first "real" attempt at a powerful Android device. ADB works fine, learn to install the drivers. The only real issue with the device is the GPS which is already been acknowledged. Also voicemail is hosted not stored. Installing roms and modding your phone does not affect your voicemail. God I hate stupid people, mods please delete this thread.
OP your best bet is to get an iPhone and leave us alone - thanks.
Its been what a month or so since the phone has been out?
If you where truly here when the G1 first hit then you seriously can not talk about frustration.

Calling it a Day!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just to air my frustrations about the I9000. I have had this handset since it was released and its time to get rid.
I have been very patient with firmware updates and such....and it packs some brilliant hardware in theory but it just does not cut the mustard. I had the I8000 (Omnia 2) prior to this phone and it was exactly the same (except windows OS) because every time samsung brought out a new firmware it was still littered with bugs.
I know people Root their Handsets (I have done all the hacks and speedmods, etc) and rave about the speeds customisation, etc but i still get FCs and apps resetting themselves to default every so often with or without modding.
For example today i had no music showing in my music player but thought oh well....wait......wait. It appeared 10 minutes later. Recorded a video...or so i thought but nothing was saved. The Ringtones i have set are gone and i have to go through everything from scratch. This happens randomly maybe a few times a month. There is always something wrong somewhere and then i have to boot the I9000 down.....Everything is then fine for a while but always raises its ugly head at some point........WTF.
Now i hate to say it but i find myself drawn more and more to the iphone but feel like cutting my hands off or committing suicide for thinking these thoughts...they are blasphemous. I cannot help it though because i have grown to dislike the galaxy s and do not know any other handset that reviews say are better. Maybe its just the Android OS being generic and having to cater for a million different models of handset but surely then this is samsungs fault for not incorporating universal fixes.
If you read this and are deciding to get the galaxy s i would advise not to..... wait for something better now.
Well I have to say that JPY is a very decent firmware. I didn't have any major issue with it, it's fast (without any kind of lag fix) and it's stable . I rooted my SGS and got rid off Samsung's bloatware and I really like the phone now.
There's only two things that bother me, but it has nothing to do with software: I hate speaker position (international version) and also lack of flash/light.
So maybe you should buy a W7 or Symbian phone.
I don't know what to say to you, except you're doing something wrong if you're getting so many FC.
About the ringtones: I've experienced this problem when I deleted thumbnails from gallery (DCIM/thumbnails), at least I think it was because of that. Rebooted the phone and didn't delete the folder since then and never got the issue again.
So I would still recommend this phone, but it still depends on the person who gets it and for how much money.
Peace out.
dude ur phone has a virus. mine had one too exactly the same symptoms as your phone. did a reflash of 2.2 + factory reset phone is working like a charm now.
Im with the original OP. Way too many issues to deal with - I love what the device has to offer - but if I have to worry everytime go I to turn it on if it will work - its not worth it.
If I could have my SGS with the dependability and build quality of an HTC - that would be perfect (I use HTC as an example because all of the ones I have owned have been solid devices).
Yeah thanks opica.....should mention that only really get FCs with some apps that are obviously on the market but not meant for or tested properly on this handset...... overall i should clarify i dont get that many at all. Its mostly just the other things i have experienced such as recording a video and then the handset telling me that the MP4 file is unsupported, i reboot it still does not work so i record another video...this is also an mp4 file and plays. Its just **** like that constantly. I am on JPY but even that firmware gets confused every so often. Like i said i have had 2 samsung phones now both were flagship models at the time but both have fallen short because something this hyped should be the dogs bollocks. But they are not. Whoever says otherwise is kidding themselves IMO.
guys I totally sympathise because I have the voda 16GB SGS and it is fu**ing awful SW im not kidding Eg bbc news app takes about 3 mins to load plus it feezes up all the time to the point where it is unusable. I am unable to answer calls as it just shows the answer call screen but the screen is frozen and this is on the official 2.2 updated from sammy after a reset AHHHHH
However after speaking to and getting no where with samsung i decided i had a phone thats unusable and samsung are not doing a thing so my options were sell it and get an IP4 followed by shotgun insertion to mouth or just bite the bullet and flash a custom rom
WOW I installed darkys v8.0 and its is like a whole new phone that bbc news app now loads instantly no freezing no lagging no issues at all so far. Well besides battery life since I cant put the thing down now. Even WiFi connects in a second now. So amazing work by Darky and team.
Im not promoting this rom go choose our own but im just telling you guys i was in the same boat and now i love the SGS if your out of options and you love the hardware get a new rom.
Someone once said "buy a phone for its hardware capabilities then customize the SW to your specifications, then you will have your perfect phone"
Flash a custom FW? As someone else said, Darky's is a fine one to try.

Exactly... There is loads of custom ROMs posted here on xda.
I had a feeling that the software will be pretty ****ty at the beginning, but I kinda hoped that some decent custom rom will come out, if samsung wasn't able to build one.
My first choice would be nitr0's Insanity, but when JPY came out, it was good enough for me.
Again, I have NO problems now when I sorted everything out, it's merely playing with the looks of the desktop
Give Darky's V8.0 a try

another galaxy s user who has had problems and think the iphone is the answer, i however sympathise with you if its not working properly
if its that bad i will take it of your hands for £50

No.
Previously had an iphone 4/3gs, HTC desire - And i have to say, a Galaxy S + xda (speedmod, darkys 2.2.1 rom etc) is currently, hands down, the best mobile phone on the planet.

Wifi only tab sub-forum??

Anybody know if there will be a sub-forum for the wifi only Tabs? How much if anything from other Tabs will even work on the wifi only units??
try and flash overcome and see what happens
You'll need balls of steel to do it though.
Given this post, I think you can safely say that a WiFi Tab subforum isn't going to happen!

Dave

Not really, just some common sense. For example, if you DO NOT have the original firmware FOR THE GIVEN DEVICE that you can flash in case of emergency and a flashing app that works in emergencies, DO NOT flash anything to that device, period. Unless, of course, you're ok with quite possibly staring at the download screen forever. It takes a lot to kill these things but if it's waiting for good firmware you don't have and you can't get, you may as well have killed it.
We just recombined GSM and CDMA, why split for Wifi only?
Actually, I'm indifferent. I'm just trying to get my post count up so I can talk to DEV's.
Good point. Now that I look at things again the Tab itself is all in one area anyway. Ill just keep my eyes peeled for wifi specific stuff.

Android Market = waste of money

I am really starting to dislike the Android Market lately, with the exception of games..... 9 of the last 10 apps i have paid for from the market, didnt work. I know its really not the Markets fault, but i have never felt so ripped off in my life. All these "Devs" creating these apps and charging people, and the **** doesnt even work right. It feels like they dont even care, they are just wanting to make a quick few bucks. Hell i even bought a app from a BIG name Dev, all the "PRO" features didnt work. sorry about the rant, but its really starting to piss me off!..... lol ( i will leave the name of the Dev and the app annonymous for now, to give him time to reply to my emails, if i get no reply i will share the name with you all, maybe on a forum with such a community as ours, he will get the point, and do something about it)
I've had a complete opposite experience to you since first using the android market in 2010. Devs are amazing and respond to emails and requests. Applications work 95% of the time.
You do get 15 minutes to test the app in which time you can easily get a full refund. I know it's not a lot of time to thoroughly test, but it helps
same, i've had nothing but good experiances with the market place. make sure you read the comments and see that its popular before you buy it.
Admitedly, I preferred when it was a 24 hour trial period. Android market was superb back then
15 minutes is usually more than enough. It's only not ok when you buy a game that requires a huge download after installing it. Though those games usually have a check on first opening that checks compatibility. Not perfect but better than leading you on with a 30 minute download and then finding out that your phone is not compatible

Best advice here.
READ THE COMMENTS.
Im just that guy, if it can go wrong it will!.... lol I know about the 15 minute thing, but like you said by the time you realize it doesnt fully work, its usually too late. espescially when it does something like "Please Wait.... installing or changing blah blah" for 8 of those minutes.... lol

Just do your research on the application running on your phone. Reading the comments is usually a great start. People frequently say things like "app is amazing on my xperia play" or "F**k you dev you suck l3rn to c0ad. Xperia play"
Sometimes you don't even what to expect in the future if a dev just quits on updating his apps or it gets removed from the market.

Yeah, I use a lot of this particular devs other apps, thats what made me decide to finally go pro with one, i had the no pro and loved it, and the one thing i wanted from the pro version i cant get to work. oh, well the rest will come in handy if i ever decide to unlock BL, but then again i will run into the license issue with the app if i put it on a custom rom, but im sure the dev has work arounds for that already.
EDIT - I feel like an a**hole... after a data/cache wipe in CWM and a nandroid recover, the app is for the most part working now.

Whaaat? If I was making money, I would be doing it to buy things and keep myself alive, not to play of Ireland or The European Union's debts.
Why don't you install app, titanium backup then remove app? After you install again just turn off its updates and net connection via ur app manager. Try it longer then buy it.
I rarely buy apps that don't have a demo, and when I do they work fine.
Always read the comments before committing to buy anything. And when you do buy, try quickly then you have that 15 min window to refund (which I think iTunes doesn't have).
I've only ever had one problem with a paid app where an update messed it up. I contacted the developer and he sent me the apk of the previous version.
Personally I'm happy with the devs on android, one had nothing but great service
brought to you by the XDA app on my badass Android toy
I finaly got a reply from the dev, all he really said is it was recently updated, try installing the update, but i bought it after the update so its already the updated one, then he said, they wil be continuosly updating it so, basically just suck it up and when it works it works, if not too bad. (not exactly in those words, but thats the impression i got) So anyways, i figured out why it wasnt working on my own though, I had a theme that was using icons other than stock ones, so when the app was replacing icons, it was replacing the stock ones, not the ones the system was actually using. So i ended up, reverting back to stock ROM, then using UOT and creating my whole own them.... and it was FREE! Nowi have my cool ass purple theme.
