[Q] Nexus 7 as MP3 playr + USB OTG - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Using Nexus 7 unrooted (and want to keep i this way).
Want to connect it to powered speakers to act as an MP3 player, but also wish to keep the music on a USB stick.
Is it possible? Use USB hub? Nexus Media Importer?
Any help will be much appreciated.

Yeah its possible mate.
Get either a USB hub or Splitter.
So you can add more than one connection to the OTG at any one time.
If I were you I'd be careful though, I've heard of people putting to much pressure on the connection and literally blowing their connection. Rendering the N7 useless. :/
Hope it works out for you !

Do you mean damaging the physical socket?

Trying to add an external hard drive to webtop

I have Rooted this phone and installed the custom Adeo (is that the name of the ROM or the hacker?) ROM. I also did the webtop-mod-without-a-dock because I was bored. I have the HD dock and think it would be great if I could have my external Drive show up in the file browser. I could play my music and videos from there. I don't know how hard this would be so I figured I'd ask you guys that have much more Android experience.
**SOLVED** see page 2
Also, I would really like to play music from my phone over USB in the deck in my truck. The deck is made for "ipods" or iPhones and won't see my Atrix as a media device. Is there a mod I could do to the phone to make my deck recognize it and let me play music? Thanks guys
EDIT
USB thumb drives work just fine, why won't it pick up my external hard drive? Does it need to be formatted a certain way?

Your thumb drives are probably FAT32 and your external drive is likely NTFS. The webtop cannot read NTFS drives, they need to be FAT32 or some form of EXT
id hate to format it to find out it doesn't work lol
I use a FAT32 external drive and it works fine.
thank you very much sir

I don't think you'll be able to. You can try setting the phone as mass storage, but I doubt it will work.
This is 2011, these car audio manufactures need to realize that an ipod is not the only mp3 player on the market.
This sucks.

Yeah, but unfortunately it IS the mp3 player of the masses... and that's all they care about =\
There HAS to be a hack for this!!!!

IMO this is the worst part about being an Android owner. Most consumer electronics are catered to iProduct.
My solution to the car stereo thing was to buy a deck that uses bluetooth audio.Works great that way.

That is definitely a solution, as is a standard headphone cable for the aux port. Problem is, bluetooth degrades quality and the aux cable doesn't charge. Also I like being able to change songs from the deck.
I think my solution will be to buy an old ass ipod on craigs and run the wire into my glovebox and just leave it in there.
That is of course unless someone figures out how to modify the usb certificate on the atrix to fake an ipod so I can just plug my phone in.

Actually screw that.
I frequently use all my battery throughout a single work day. I need that usb port to charge my damn phone! This needs to be figured out

Don't know if this has been answered but my WD "Mybook" took over 45mins to get "recognized" the USB thing popped up and it just said prepairing for like 30minutes or more.
Now whenever I plug it in it's basically instant on. I think it indexes it prior to using or something.

bringing this back. I finally got around to formatting my external drive to fat32 and every worked perfectly! excpet...
Fat32 has a severe limitation as it will not allow to me transfer any files onto the drive that are over 4gb. well most blu ray rips are at least 7gb. I know I can split the files up and recombine them, but that is extremely time consuming and clunky!
I then read that formatting the drive to an apple standard (hsp+ or something) would allow me to get passed the 4gb cap. while it may have, the webtop wont recognize the drive. so I'm back to square one.
not only that but I can't get the drive formatted back to a windows standard.
All im looking to do is have this drive be recognized by webtop and let me store all my media on it. If I can't get this figured out I'm buying an s2: (
Just an FYI, but the Atrix car dock provides audio out via USB. This means it will charge and play audio without having to do anything other than dock the phone. The included USB cable has a 3.5mm jack and includes the 3.5mm cable. The Car Dock app also provides a quick link to the music player.
The car dock is well worth the 40 bucks.

Because tv has hdmi input and laptop has hdmi output. You are trying to output hdmi from your phone which should go into the input. Since your laptop is not an input you cannot and will not see anything.

Is there any adapters that are made to lets say Hdmi to usb? I've seen one for hdmi to svideo. But most laptops don't have that either.

After rooting would it show those options in my phone and the laptop ?

@zeealot, you cant connect your phone to any laptop via hdmi... the hdmi port on your phone is for output so as the hdmi port on most laptops so therefore you cant connect output-to-output
if you want to display/output your phone on a bigger screen, you can only connect to a tv or an external monitor that has hdmi input port... also, rooting your phone doesnt have anything to do with it... I hope I explained that clearly to you

You could try using a HDMI capture device like this one:
http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/intensity/
but it is probably expensive.
$200 its professional grade used for way more then what your wanting it for. You can actually hook up your xbox or ps3 to your laptop with this and record the game play as your playing it.

Why don't you just buy the laptop and be done with it? You obviously have no clue about how HDMI works, and I wouldn't trust you trying to perform mods to your phone because I know you'll end up here whinging you bricked your phone.
Sigh.

you CAN NOT connect it to a laptop BUT if you're referring to an external display with hdmi input (monitor/tv) you can still use webtop without a dock... just search the forum for hdmi mirroring
Is there any way to make the HDMI output of the laptop to HDMI input ?like by using a converter ?
No. It's not possible. Period.
Use your TV, or get the lap dock, there is physically no way to make your laptop show the webtop off of your phone without an extra tuner card (hdmi are expensive, and not worth it).
Btw, google is your friend.

I think yhe2x had made it very clear already! Buy a new LapTop with HDMI "IN" port.
Even though I think dingdong a laptop with any form of input would be nearly impossible. Laptops just aren't something people expect, or use, as a secondary display.
Plain and simple... There is no way to connect your phone to the laptop and use webtop mode. TV, yes. HDMI computer monitor, yes. Laptop, no.

[Q] Audio via USB?

Since the Nook Simple Touch does not have an audio jack, it's a deal breaker for me.
However, might there be some way to route audio via usb -> 1/8th TRS? If so, I would definitely jump on the device and buy it as soon as I get some money to spend on new toys.
Bluetooth maybe?
Well since the Nook Color hardware is so close to the N2E, since they have working bluetooth, I bet it won't be too long until we see the N2E with it as well.

Well I believe the SoC includes Bluetooth hardware. Since it's there why not have that ability on the Nook as well. Enabling Bluetooth could solve general lack of audio issues for some people.
I thought I saw it somewhere that it's concluded Nook STR does NOT have function BT?
This week at Walmart I saw a USB / Bluetooth adapter. I believe you would need a micro-USB adapter to connect it to the Nook. But as I was looking at it, I was thinking of this thread and wondering if you could make the physical connections work, would the nook end up with Bluetooth capability.
Any thoughts on if this would work or not ?
not bleutooth ...
the thread seems to be going into bleutooth mode...
Was wondering if connectiing a headphone with a microusb adapter would help get the audio?
like say this micro usb to headphones adapter
www[dot]amazon[dot]com/Samsung-Headset-Adapter-Strive-Flight/dp/B003W057FS/ref=pd_cp_cps_1
same as catzilla this would really help me decide on the nook touch
People seem to get it working with the nook colour, so it may be for the touch as well.
First step is to get USB host mode
check this thread,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1105497
Saombra,
But this only works on CM7. Still waiting for something that may run on regular nook android. And it is quite scary that you may fry your usb on th enook in case you forget to switch it back to client mode before connecting to your computer.

Someone with a little patience could probably take the required code from the latest CM 2.6.29 kernel sources and apply it to the Nook kernel sources.
Also I seem to recall that the "usb power issue" was solved some time ago?
USB host mode is nice and all that, but are there actually any libs in Android that can push audio trough USB?
I remember dreaming of being able to connect my X10 to an external DAC, but that was before I invested in a couple of squeezeboxes
Well, I hope we can find someone with time and knowledge to do so.
And regarding the usb host, that is the information I found from saombra's post.
I don't know regarding library, but I know that in this post those guys learned how to get audio from a dock using a samsung smartphone usb port. So there is a way. Maybe the only way.

[Q] Can I use a wireless USB adapter to boost my internet?

Hi all, I've searched hard for this...
I just bought a D-Link Wireless N 150 USB adapter because I though it might help getting wifi reception on my Nexus 7 in my bedroom where it is currently poor.
I have a OTG adapter so I figured I could plug it in with that and off I go!
...The problem is installing the software.
The USB stick comes with a mini cd-rom with the software on it which makes it tricky to get it on to the Nexus.
So. I suppose my question is threefold:
1) Firstly, can this USB wireless thing work on my Nexus?
2) How can I make it work?
Wait, that's just two.
Help will be much appreciated and I will rampant with my thanks.

Power supply is from a 2amp (5v) cigarette usb socket, which is wired up behind the dash and not using the original cigarette socket in centre console.
I installed the amp under the passenger seat and run all the cabling under the carpet and out, where needed, behind the facia panel, the dac is also situated there and i ran the usb hub into the glovebox. You literally cannot see any wiring bar in the glovebox as i wanted to maintain a stock look throughout the car as best i could, everything is also revertable back to stock if the need ever arises, the only thing i had to do was screw the amp into the carpet under the seat, but the small holes left would never be seen anyway.
The facia panel was designed and made by a lad named reece who runs http://www.rtafabrication.com/ - top bloke and did an amazing job and the finish and quality of the panel is top notch. I went for a wired dash panel but he can also do wireless panels too!!! - if your thinking of a car install contact him to see if he can design a facia panel for your vehicle.

sat nav is navfree
video is archos Kodi.
As you can see, also for fun have a megadrive emulator with ps4 pad to play games lol. Also can use either torque pro or OBDlink II for my OBD Link LX bluetooth OBD port reader. (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00H9S71LW?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00)

I have never used Elemental X but my understanding of using Timur over any other Kernel was that it uses his own Powerevent Manager app which can do things like wake up when power is applied and deep sleep when power is removed, something i believe Tasker can do. Also not sure if Elexmental X allows simultanious USB hosting and charging + Fast Charging. Supports certain Rear Camera's. Automount of upto 4 FAT32 drives, custom boot animation and shutdown video's, block wakeup alarms. People using other kernel may tell me otherwise but this is what i came up with when researching which to go for.

Just a question to be sure I understood everything.
Without USB Hub, you plug the OTG cable to the tablet and USB DAC to the USB port. Then the USB DAC is connected to the amp using RCA correct?
Currently my setup is not using a DAC (rca to jack directly connected to the amp) and I have interferences because of that so I'm thinking about using a DAC. Is it natively managed by Android?
Thanks,

Yep that is pretty much it, OTG cable then USB DAC straight into USB port, and connect it to your amp / stereo via Red & White RCA jacks, or as i did - - - - - Nexus 7 - OTG cable - USB Hub (4 port) - USB DAC - AMP
I believe Lollipop handles USB audio natively, anything before needs a kernel to implement it - again if anyone knows different then please let me know
Is audio taken from usb? I didn't think any Android can send audio from the usb? Or is that why I need the OTG-cable?
That looks amazing, stock even, imagine having Andoid auto on there.
Any pics of the evo?
