I have a T-859
I went to Droid Basement and downloaded
Download TMO (Odin; SGH-T859):
recovery.tar.md5
Download: recovery.tar.md5
I expected to see a recovery.tar.md5 file. What I found was a file called recovery.tar.tar. I used 7zip to extract the contents and get a file called recovery.img and also a message from 7zip - "There is no correct end to archive."
I tried to download 2 more time with the same result.
Am I doing something wrong? Is the tar file damaged? Will the file recovery.tar.tar work "as is"?
TIA

This may be redundant and borderline stupid but here it goes.
When I use some of the download sites, I get a file with a .zip.jar extension. Is this something I need to extract to get the zip file, or do I simply rename it to a zip file? I've tried the rename thing and cant get the update.zip file to flash. I've tried a couple of browsers and both pc and mac, and still get the .jar on the end initially. Can anyone help?
Usually they should just end in zip. I don't know why they would end in jar. Where are you downloading from?
Well tried it again using firefox and it worked this time. Safari for mac always seems to have that issue. Thanks
Ok so i was trying to root my SGS and got stuck in the first step.
It says after u download the zip u unzip and there is supposed to be a .tar file.
But after i unzipped mine was another zip so i unzipped that and there was some weird file called : zImage
Its not a tar file so says my computer. Is it supposed to be like that? Any help will be thanked.
So i tried rooting my phone and it didn't work, i am on gingerbread and have no experience about SGS but have some experience about android.
So after i failed my root i tried turning on the phone but this weird picture of a phone/yellow triangle/computer
And it won't let me turn on the phone fully, i can only go to download mode and nothing else. i have tried hard reset but not working.
Please help!
Simliar problem as this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=805923.

You have to flash a complete stock rom to get the phone to work
Gesendet von meinem GT-I9000 mit Tapatalk
Start with settings in Windows file manager = show file extensions (like .tar .zip .txt .exe)
Depending on what program used to unzip, .zip and .tar might have same icons. Show file extension to see difference.

thats what i did and this is what happened.
do i have to flash to stock rom again or can i just root again and it will
boot?
The zimage file is contained in the .tar, but still you need to flash the .tar file...
.Tar files seem like zip files and can be extracted, so to solve the windows showing the file as zipped do as O-T said:

Then start ODIN with administrator privileges and use the .tar file (ONLY TAR FILES) as PHONE, do not choose any other file and certainly dont tick re-partition, after all are ready (and your phone is in download mode and recognized by ODIN) press start.
If you failed and see the screen with "Phone/YellowTriangle/Computer" do not worry, just pull out the phone battery, leave it with battery off for 30 secs, put the battery back in, get your phone to download mode (guess you are putting your phone to download mode before flashing, right?) and try again using the instructions that you have read in all those posts!

its all apk and odex files; gonna cwm flash it and see if that works. trying to go from stock UCUAMDB to UCUAMDL so i can then wipe/flash. getting 'unauthorized software detected on your phone' error. thanks ATT!
I think that's related to Knox. Got to rename or delete the Knox apk in System/app.

No! You have the wrong file if unzipping it doesn't give you an md5
No! You have the wrong file if unzipping it doesn't give you an md5.
Go get the right file. When you unzip it it will have the md5. Flash it through odin as a PDA.
Then you'll be all good.

im ODIN-ing back to UCUAMDB for now, DL'ing on this connection is painfully slow, like 4 hrs per ROM.
thanks; figured it wasnt right.
So I was trying to get the media folder from the Galaxy s4 black.
Downloaded the firmware, extracted it until system.img.ext4.
Now how do I open this?
Tried with ext2explore - it did nothing when I chose the file
Tried with diskinternals - raw disk image - File system not supported
Anybody?

Have you tried this :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2294909
I use it all the time
I also cannot open the system.img.ext4 file with ext4 unpacker. ( it crashes after working for 15 minutes), is there another solution?
Just rename system.img.ext4 to system.img
I was having the same problem and it worked once I did this.
Not working

I've done this numerous times, tried renaming it and all, I swear I did this the exact same way a few weeks ago and it worked no problem. Ext2Explorer doesn't do anything and the ext4 Unpacker freezes and always makes me force close it now. I'm using Windows 8.1 but I also tried this by mounting in Linux and I get an error as well, "wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/loop0," etc... So I'm not sure what happened I've downloaded the firmware from 2 different sources and from one of the sources I downloaded it from 4 different mirrors totaling 5 different downloads so there is no way my files are corrupt it won't work with ANY of them. I'm honestly so confused I don't even know where to look anymore so here I am posting along with the last few people that seem to share my pain. Hopefully someone can help us.
This is the firmware I'm using download and try it out for me pretty please let me know if your system has any issues?

Solved below
Open Galaxy S4 system.img.ext4
This is my tested method on SHV-E330L, a korean variant of Galaxy S4.
1) Unpack with sgstoex4.
2) Open unpacked file with ext2explore.
No other method works like ext4_unpacker etc., if it helps please hit thanks
Thanks!

Wowzers I literally just ran across that method and was about to post then I saw you already said it, good to know if I didn't find it I wouldn't have been left in the dark as you are right that is THE ONLY method that works at the moment for a lot of different people.

Change to system.tar.gz then extract
Open system.img.ext4 in windows easily with 2 tools!
First download this 2 tools
1. linux reader
2.jar file
http://www.diskinternals.com/download/ (linux reader)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=645192&d=1309768531
DOne 50 %:good:
Step 1)
Download Diskinternals Linux reader and open it up.
Step 2)
Download sgs2ext4.jar and open it up.
Step 3)
Take you system.img and move it into the sgs2ext4.jar application and wait until it is done.
Step 4)
Now you should get a system.img.ext4 file or something like that just make sure ext4/ext is in the name
Step 5)
Now in Diskinternals click on Drives –> mount image, now a window will pop-up, leave the box on RAW disk image and click next, now search for the system.img ext4 file and choose it.
Step 6)
Now you see a new drive which looks like this: Linux EXT Volume 1 (Number can be different) Open the drive and click on commands and then select all.
Step 7)
Now do Ctrl+S to save the files where you want them, i suggest you to make a folder on you desktop called system and save it there.
Good Luck !
hit thanks if helped
can please provide the link to download sgstoex4. file

Unfortunately this doesn't work. When you drop the system.img.ext4 file onto the sgs2ext4 tool, no file is produced. The tool just keeps endlessly repeating:
"system.img.ext4 32 B 0 B/s"
I think that tool is too old (2.5 years old) and doesn't support the newest Samsung firmwares.
