In 2012 Motorola announced she would upgrade our devices, Atrix and Photon, to Ice Cream Sandwich in Q3. As you all know, they have changed their stance, leaving us with an outdated version of Android to play with. Our devices can easily run even the last version of Android, Jelly Bean, so why the update was canceled for us?
With the Update My Moto! campaign, we are asking for a leak of what was been done before they canceled the update or a compatible Tegra 2 kernel for Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean. With these files, XDA developers can fix the problems themselves, while Motorola can make up for this mistake they made.
You can help us to achieve that. Share this campaign in your blog, social network, show it to your friends or file a BBB complaint. Let's grab Motorola's attention!

Thanks Loki
Gonna do it tomorrow too, since i'm leaving with my gf now.
Thank you "Android Authority"
Made a banner if you want to use. The least Motorola could do is give us what they started, it's not like they're going to finish anyways.
QBKing77 will be covering this issue and have a video up tomorrow. Between Update My Moto's social sharing and Support My Moto's backing we may pull this off or at least put a serious red mark in Moto's profits.
Good job. A few suggestions:
1. I'm not sure you want to ask for a "leak." We want a release, even if it's incomplete.
2. The kernel alone does no good. We need the HALs.
3. There are some grammatical errors.
Suggested rewording:
In February 2012, Motorola announced that the Atrix 4G and Photon 4G would receive upgrades to Ice Cream Sandwich. In September, they cancelled the upgrade, leaving us with an outdated version of Android. Many of us purchased our phones in anticipation of the upgrade. Many are locked into long-term carrier contracts which prevent us from upgrading our phones.
With this campaign, we are asking that Motorola release an upgrade or whatever work has already been completed on it. Even with an incomplete release, we may be able to develop a working version ourselves.
You can help us to achieve that. Share this campaign on your blog or social network, show it to your friends, or file a Better Business Bureau complaint. Let's grab Motorola's attention!

Let's keep in going
There needs to be a YouTube video on that main page with a good background info on the story and negative rant against Motorola and Google for their part. Not only will it make the website more "alive" with actual human depth, but the video can also be seen on YouTube and shared. Who knows, maybe it will lead to more people posting videos and voicing their opinions. The negative publicity might force Motorola to take action.

UPDATE (14th June 2011):
We are now over the 10,000 mark.
I have now spoken with Motorola and gotten confirmation that Motorola plan to unlock every device that will get an update in the second half of this year. This will include maintenance & firmware updates, but is still subject to Carrier approval.
The promising sign is that Verizon has already allowed Motorola to unlock a device on their network, the Xoom, which utilizes the unlockable/re-lockable model that Motorola intends on using across their devices.
I'm still looking to work with Motorola in the coming months to help see if we can make this a smooth process for Motorola and the community.
You can read the article here:

Please share this where you can and keep it alive. I will continue to work with Motorola to see if we can get this thing torn wide open.
UPDATE (26th April 2011):
We are now at ~8,700 mark.
Motorola has now responded to me, stating that they are looking at unlocking bootloaders across their devices late 2011.
The article for the story can be found here:
http://ausdroid.net/2011/04/26/the-little-aussie-taking-on-motorola-u-s/#more-8184
We're still seeking clarity around whether this will be for current devices or only future devices.
I couldn't have gotten this far without the support of everyone here. You guys and girls have been a huge support and help me turn this snowball into a wrecking ball.
Please share this where you can and keep it alive. I will continue to work with Motorola to see if we can get this thing torn wide open.

We are now at ~7600 mark.
We're starting to slow down from our initial boom, so I have now set up a Facebook page to see if we can wrangle in some supporters that don't use Twitter or XDA.
I will need your help getting this out there. So share the facebook page where you can.
I'm also looking to see if anyone is interested in helping me Moderate the page. Please PM if you are.

Hi All,
I have created a Groubal (online petition) to get a response from Motorola on it's bootloader policy.
>>This petition started for the Atrix, but I made sure that it was for Motorola's overall Bootloader Policy. I have reached 200 signatures in 2 weeks, but now believe it's time to expand this out of the Atrix space and into the larger Motorola Dev community.

What can I say, I'm idealistic.
IMO waste of time.
Moto thinks they're God. Also, odds are your gorilla glass will be cracked before this bootloader.
On the other hand, class-action lawsuit is more appealing. Somehow get a lawyer to argue the users right to UTILIZE the hardware, as moto isn't. Lawsuits are the only thing corporations understand.
I did sign it, but I got no hopes...

While litigation may be the way in the U.S. it is not the way in the land down under. We have Government appointed watchdogs that provide avenues for complaints and comments. If a complaint is sufficiently raised to an Ombudsman the company the complaint is about is charged a fee for every day the complaint is not resolved.
Unfortunately the Atrix is not commercially available in Australia and thus I cannot pursue this in a typical Australian way.
If suing the pants of Motorola is likely to work, then I encourage any U.S. Citizens to do so (but only after carefully considering the cause and affect).
I am simply encouraging everyone to focus their complaints rather than spreading it across so many channels and losing it's potency.
Also: in all honesty, it's not really wasting that much time, since I would normally be wasting this time flashing experimental Roms, which I can't do due to obvious readons.
Signed and linked to on Facebook. It's no more a waste of time than flashing a rom...
edit hehe. You beat me to the waste of time comment
Signed it just a second ago!
I'll sign but this has a much lower chance of succeeding than the AT&T service petition, and I'm not convinced we'll see many results from that one.

But there's no harm in trying is there?
I think that when compared with the DroidX and Droid2, this phone will be available around the world. Verizon is one of the only carriers that still uses CDMA and thus smaller consumer base for the Droid series Motorola phones.
Once the Global Atrix's are released we should see a lot more attention as well as the European Unions attitude towards anti-competitive behaviour might force an inquiry.
Once again, I'm a tad idealistic and am very keen for your support as well as your constructive feedback.
signed~! but i only put 1% of my hopes in this and the rest 99% in the developers to crack the bootloader themselves!!

haha.. as if motorola cares. you already bought, its a done deal! they even promised 1080p recording on the specs sheet followed by "(in the future update)".. i seriously dont think there will be an update on this thing..
before you buy, they promise lots of things, "in the future update".
after you gave buy and after a while try asking for the update.. these f*cktards will just say... "what update?"
my hope leans more on supporting the developers who are working hard to crack this wonderful device.. rather than wasting time begging to motorola after you shelled out that sum.

Completely agree, but in all honesty, I had the time to waste.
The Dev's really are the ones that will get the bootloader unlocked or bypassed before motorola even decides to do anything.

So we're up near the 200 signature mark now for the Petition. I've been in touch with Motorola about 6 times in the last 2 weeks, not giving up on this one though.
My last response from them was:
Dear Irwin,
I do apologize but there is no definite timeframe yet for the announcement of the bootloader solution for our mobile phones. Updates for the Motorola ATRIX will be posted first at http://www.motorola.com/Support/CA-EN/Consumer-Support/Mobile-Phones/ATRIX. I'm so sorry for that inconvenience.
We hope that you find this information useful and look forward to assisting you in the future.

So it's not a flat out denial of an imminent bootloader solution, but we're no closer either.
I will now create similar posts in the other Motorola forums on XDA and see if we can get our Brothers & Sisters to join the party.
I know there are a lot of skeptics, but I will keep trying. I don't have the skill to help the Dev's crack the phone, but I do have the patience to make our voices heard.

I'm sure this question has been asked before, but are locking these bootloaders unconstitutional? It doesn't allow us to do absolutely ANYTHING with the product that we bought. I thought I heard something about someone that might actually make a lawsuit about this.

It would be great if someone with a Lawyer friend could look into that one. I read somewhere that Motorola stood by it's decision for the Droid X and as long as they release the kernel source code (which no one could do anything with anyway), they were not in breach of any open source licences.

Q: Why should I care if moto releases the source or not?
A: Do you want AOSP rom, and CM7, maybe MIUI. all of this are dependent on the source. otherwise is super mega complicated to create them. And available source guarantees more devs.
So what is the plan?
Simple, the plan is to demand the source, a lot, A LOT! So they dont pull the same stunt they did with 4.1.83 update. The source for that became available last week!
So we are going to do this 2 ways! The official way, and the troll way.
The official method to request source is by writing a letter to motorola mobile to the following address.
Motorola Mobility, INC.
OSS Management
600 North US hwy 45
Libertyville, IL
60048, USA
The letter of course:
I ___________ write to request the release of the source code for the following software:
The 4.5.91 firmware update for motorola Atric 4g, the webtop included in the update, and any particular software included in this update that follows GPL licensing.
The second method, the troll way. Is simply to flood the motorola forums and requested there!
Tell everyone about this effort, we need source code right away!

Are you taking initiative to write a letter to Motorola? If you do, I'm sure the XDA community would be obliged to take care of the flooding.

well considering i took the initiative to spread the word of finding the unlock, and then my handle got submited to a few international gadget sites as responsible for finding the unlock from the test servers. maybe writing to moto myself could be a bad idea. i def dont want to face any legal problems. but i will encourage anyone who wants to write them to do so, ill even write the letter and paste it for you guys, a stamp is only 45 cents!
Please some direction to help, @ or#

Dear Motorola,
You have already done your best to turn the Atrix into a dead bird. The GS2 and G2X have better fan following because you locked the bootloader, now we request you to release the source of the GB update ASAP so we can get to work with the code and bring some CM magic to the Atrix

What does?
Hello XDA members,
So you all know that our phone that is the Samsung Galaxy 3 came with Android 2.1 aka Eclair and Samsung promised to give an upgrade to 2.2 aka Froyo. The Samsung has fulfilled its promise of Froyo upgrade and now I think the Samsung will never look back to our Galaxy 3. Our phone has already been of an old generation of Galaxy 3 but still it features almost equally attractive features when compared to other low end Galaxy Series phones like Galaxy Fit and Galaxy Pop, infact its better certainly. But now there is no scope of getting an Android 2.3 aka Gingerbread upgrade on our Galaxy whereas similar phones like Fit are expected to receive it soon. Here on XDA also Marcellusbe tried to port CM7 with 2.3.4, he released Alpha 5 Fix 1 and since then he stopped the Development for CM6 port which he thinks would help in CM7. Looking at current conditions we cant even hope of Unofficial CM7 i.e. 2.3.4 by the end of a year or so.There is very slim chance of even getting it because it is difficult for Marcellusbe to work alone. These kinds of project involves a big team.
The Group GINGERBRDFORG3 is formed with the aim to gather support of other Galaxy 3 users to convince Samsung to give an official upgrade to Galaxy 3. Samsung cannot neglect the demands of thousands of its customer. Just think there are lots of Galaxy 3 members, If we all together will request Samsung I am pretty sure that Samsung will release a upgrade. If it can run on Fit it would easily run on Galaxy 3. Our phone has a huge market. If Samsung releases an upgrade to 2.3 and increases the life cycle of Galaxy 3 there will be no harm only a Win-Win situation for both Samsung and us.
Just think on it twice. I know if all of you will support we will soon be able to convince Samsung. To do so just be a part of GINGERBRDFORG3, sign the petitions, tweet on official twitter handle and recommend friends. Its free, simple and can be done in seconds. If all of you give just 15 minutes to this group we can work out wonders.

First request to Samsung has been posted via Twitter and Facebook. Stay connected to know more.
If this is going to work thenI want to support it but I'm almost 100% sure that this wont.
if you gather enough people this will work, but you will need around 40,000-50,000 people
htc decided to develop GB for the desire as well by demand of the community, but they were a hell lot of people...
what you need is some sort of a petition site where people can sign the claim of gingerbread for the galaxy 3 and then you need enough people to sign it.
Yes dude thats from where I draw inspiration - The Case Of HTC Desire. We can do everything, we have everything.. We can form faceook pages, we can form twitter accounts we can use petition sites which are available but What we lack is Supporters. Even after such a long request no one has come up to support. Though the thread has 45 views only including you only 2 people replied without much enthusiasm? Can anyone help to gather people here im 99.99% sure that we can do this..
The same thing happened with sony ericsson xperia x10 where due to huge demand sony decided to give gingerbread .thumbs up I am supporting this.
If you support this Kindly use the links to Sign the Petitons and also follow the official twitter account and post messages so that samsung can see that we really want 2.3.. Also suggest your friends and family.. Please. Its a request.

I agree! Signed!!

First I read "do not overclock"..... what has it to do with gingerbread?
just signed the partition
But i have my doubts:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16236183&postcount=2
Signed both........
maybe you should post the links in the official CM7 forum, samsung forum and on every forum you find on the topic to get some more people.
there's a facebook page for gingerbread for the G3 but it only has some hundred followers.
maybe you get some blogs or news sites to post it in a news as well...
you have to do evereything to promote them, otherwise you won't have chance to get enough people.
and you should only use one petition, to concentrate the amount of people.
if you have two petitions, some people will only sign one of them, which will degrade the total number you get.
Go!! 2.3 Go!!
I have signed the 1st petition Lets make a Riot..

Absolutely I will post everywhere after some time.. And also for posting all around the INTERNET FORUMS I should gather a support here on XDA.. The topic has been raised today only. I have already created an official twitter account and soon facebook page is also expected. This is a whole new project so I wont keep any connection with that old facebook page. Yes, thanks for the Suggestion I will remove petition 2's link. .. PM me if you have more suggestion.
Signed 1st petition, hope it will work.
I have removed petition 1ST. Those who signed only the 1st petition are requested to visit the link to petition and sign it again. Those who signed the 2nd petition no need to revisit because the current petition is what you had in 2nd petition previously. I deleted 1st one because it was having only 18 signs as compared to 23 in 2nd one. Now we have one petition only so more focus is given on it.

ROUND 3:
THE ICS LEAK AND THE THEAD HAS BEEN REMOVED FROM XDA AS WELL AS POSTS MADE BY epinter FOR THE PAST COUPLE DAYS!
The official reason as to why this happened
FBI warns users of mobile malware (Google states Jelly Bean has protection that older versions of Android does not)
Cnet Article: FBI warns users of mobile malware
Support My Moto Campaign has been specifically mentioned in latest Cnet article.
A big thanks goes out to Casey Newton and Roger Cheng for mentioning us here at Support My Moto!
Over fourty articles covering Motorola's removal of the ICS update and over ten articles that mention the campaigns
This is the Official Support My Moto Campaign Thread
Support My Moto! at supportmymoto.comA unified campaign backed by developers and you requesting Ice Cream Sandwich & Jellybean updates, source code, and unlocked bootloaders for the owners of Atrix MB860, Atrix MB861, Atrix ME860, Electrify MB853 ,Photon MB855, DROID X2, MB870, XT882, MT870
The main goals of the campaign is to have a unified front in submission of requests for Ice Cream Sandwich & Jellybean updates, source code, and unlocked bootloaders for the owners of Atrix MB860, Atrix MB861, Atrix ME860, Electrify MB853 ,Photon MB855, DROID X2, MB870, XT882, MT870.
What we would like to happen;
Unlock would make JB ROMs available to anybody that wants it.
Updating would cover more moto owners and thereby minimize the impact to Moto's profits and public image.
A clean plan of how the $100 credit is to work as "We're looking into it" type statements are very damaging.
The reason we ask these things is that it gives Motorola room to work with. Once/if Motorola decides to open up a line of communication then specifics could be discussed. Ideally unlock and an update would cover almost all Moto owners. Either way, both solutions would be of benefit to Moto. Even though I'm fronting the campaign I would like to see as many people walk away from it happy, or at least not want to attack each other.
This is achieved by filing Better Business Bureau Complaints, FTC Complaints, emailing The Consumerist and signing the petitions. These things and more can be achieved at the

Just a short note to the hopeless members, if I may.
It is perfectly alright to follow something you believe in even though the outcome to you may be evident in a negative way but this campaign is about more than software updates. We consumers should never make it easier for the corporates to get away with their moral obligations. Thank you!

With the coverage from cnet (and articles that have cropped up because of it) the anger over this issue is getting out.
Feels good to be part of something awesome like this. Motorola can't ignore all this coverage for too long.

I've been keeping the Main thread updated to what's going one as well as the site
Even though everyone should be visiting the official thread, it would be a good idea to update the dev list on this thread since many of the devs that have recently supported the cause are from this forum. Just a thought.
UPDATE:
"Update My Moto" has closed their campaign. Their site now redirects to supportmymoto.com. Even though I felt the leak was not enough, as it only covered a very limited number of devices, I stated that I would support their decision.
With supportmymoto.com (yours truly) attending the Big Android BBQ, please bump the various threads and spread the word.
Yet another reason to spread the word!
FBI warns users of mobile malware
Google is stated as saying the following;
"Google is aware of this and new features on its latest Android mobile OS -- Jelly Bean 4.1 -- aim to beef up the system's security over past OS iterations. With Jelly Bean's design, Google hopes to defend against hacks that install viruses, along with other malware."
Again, the call goes out to supporters to spread the word and I hope to see some of you at the Big Android BBQ!
Joke of the Day!
How do you install the Google Calender App on an 8 month old Tegra2 Moto?
You hit it with a hammer and by a 2 year old HTC Incredible S!
(Out of 44 phones released by major manufacturers in 2011 that have been upgraded to ICS or better, only two are Moto's. This isn't even including the Nexus line. HTC, LG, Samsung and even ZTE, of all people, seem to be able to upgrade their Tegra2 phone to ICS. WTF Moto!)
I've never seen such a liar company. Even if Motorola unlock the bootloader and give us the source code, I don't think so I'll ever go for Motorola again.. I feel like begging for my phone and of course I've a standard too... I'm corporate customer and I bought this power house for all my current and future corporate need... Seems I'm pi$$ed of...

I couldn't agree more... I wish I could just sell my Motorola and buy an Galaxy S2, But the Atrix 4G has potential to be much better!
Thank you devs! :highfive:
Props to all those devs supporting this. The Atrix is a great phone, and deserves the support from Moto and Google. I honestly don't know why more effort wasn't put into pumping this phone up.
Even with the leak more pressure still needs to be put on moto. Keep spreading the word, boycott their products, give them an incredibly bad 4th quarter earnings. If even then they won't work with the customer, the industry will take notice.
Motorola and Micromax are the only manufacturers, that I can find, to release Tegra2 phones and not update any of them to ICS or JB. Micromax only released one T2 phone so I can let that slide, sorta.
First person to statistically prove that webtop 3.0 on lapdock gets better battery life than 2.0 ... what? =)
Let me clarify; Prove the end user experience on ICS is an improvement over GB. Then lulz

User experience better than WT2, maybe. WT3 still has many of the user experience bugs I covered over a year ago with Evo Desktop PC. Better user experience than Webtop+ or Ubuntop, not even close. Editing any type or large document or image editing proves that.
Battery life? WT3 is marginally better but with all it's drawbacks it's like trading Win7 for Win3.11 because Win3.11 runs faster on your PC.

Good point but judging by the campaign webtop is positioned as a tool for browsing the web, web docs, music/video entertainment and phone functionality. My money says 3.0 takes the win in ALL of these categories. And showcasing this fact on YouTube IMO is the desirable, passive ***** slap moto deserves, as opposed to this boycott moto mentality that is generally ineffective.

"ineffective", I think not. This campaign has already lost moto over a million dollars in sales. One contract cancellation alone cost them a possible $800K sale. You have to remember that Moto didn't ditch a couple phones but millions worldwide. Add in the press coverage by over 40 outlets and the proof that Moto was full of crap, you get the idea as to where this is going. If the estimated sales figures are correct (total estimates place the figure at over 3 million Tegra2 moto's sold worldwide) and only 20% of those affected ditch Moto, then the loss is around 600K devices (if Moto only makes $100 per device that's a 60 million dollar loss). Even Apple couldn't ignore numbers like that.
As far as WT3. It's a launcher. Already proved that a couple days ago. The is nothing really unique to WT3, it's a gimmick. If ICS was out on the Evo back in April of last year, WT3 would have been a one for one copy of Evo Desktop.
