[Q] replace stock sms with s voice? - Galaxy 3 General

Hi - Does anyone know if it is possible to replace the default apps that S voice uses on the S3 (AT&T)? I am using Google Voice Integrator to bypass the stock sms and send/receive all SMS through Go SMS Pro/GVoice. However, if you use S Voice, it still sends through the stock app. Driving mode also only reads SMS from the stock app. I've tried disabling the stock app hoping to force it to default to Go SMS (or even Gvoice). Any thoughts?

Another Galaxy S3 thread. Read the forum name correctly, S3 users This is Galaxy 3 GT-I5800/5801 forum, not the S3. Use correct forum for your device.

[Q] SMS limit per conversation!

Hey guys, I had previously stored my 5000+ sms messages from my XperiaX10 into my Gmail account... After I bought the Atrix4G, when I restored these messages, I saw that just some part of them were restored because there is a limitation of SMS's per conversation in Android 2.2!
Is there ANY way for me to restore ALL my messages back to my phone? Any way to remove that SMS limitation they put (which is 1000 per contact I believe)? If it's through an application (through rooting the phone, anything I can do...?)
Thanks a bunch!
Try the handcent text messaging app. Its free plus will give you a TON of extra features including unlimited inbox limit.

hmm I liked the idea, buuuut I believe Handcent syncs directly from the Messaging App so if the Messaging app doesn't get the restored messages from Gmail, I'm guessing Handcent wouldn't either? It bugged the only time I tried... I could try again, but I don't really know what I'm talking about hehe...
And I've never really used Handcent, how does it work when you receive a message? Do you get 2 notifications? Is it possible to set Handcent as the default messaging app? How does it work?

With 5000+ messages, wouldn't you rather leave them in Gmail? At least you could use the search feature in there
Yea wouldn't it be better to save that in an archive then build it again with another app now? Of course I don't know how you could import them if the SMS applications don't support it but....

It just doesn't make sense to have 5000 text messages in that format. That's a lot of scrolling if you are trying to find a specific text message, whereas, in the Gmail app you can use keywords, such as the contact's name and whatever you were talking about and then BAM, there it is.

problems whit reciving sms on samsung google Nexus S

Hello,
I have problems with receiving sms on my Nexus S.
before I got up a little icon at the top of the screen when I got a new sms, then I could go to read it when I had time or wanted.
Now it will sms up in a small black box at the bottom of the screen for a few seconds and then disappear again. when it is actually gone for always.
what is wrong? have tried to find out if there is something wrong with my settings, but can not find anything there. so there have been some days now.
hope someone can help me.
Add to that all the sms I send are stored.
Also adds that the MMS will appear as it did before. so my problem is only with SMS

Oops. I meant Google voice. If you are not then I don't really know what to suggest. I was using Google voice and it took over my messaging until I uninstalled it and deactivated it on my account.

SMS received on my N7 ?

Hello,
I have an 3G N7 and know that it can not receive / send SMS. OK, that is what was told of.
But today I got a notification that I have a message in notification bar, opened it and it looked like a regular SMS message.
Then I tested myself, I sent a normal SMS to my tablet gsm number and received it instantly. I'm on Vodafone if that makes any sense.
Build number is JDQ39 - baseband 1231_0.17.0_1205, Kernel 3.1.10-g05b777c.
Obviously this is some app inside that handles the received message, what's the app name ? location ? at least is interesting to know that at least SMS I can receive. How can I access it ?
Best regards,
Radu
Hi, i also have the same question. Anybody knows?

Download Go sms from store.
Google Voice works great on the N7 for sending and receiving sms, also. Sms works over wifi or data.
I maybe not beein too explicit.
I have received two SMS, regular kind, sent through my gsm carrier.
As i received them, means there is some app that recognise it and can handle the sms.
Question is, what is the app, how can i acces the messages received.
I'm aware of various solutions for sms that require to have an online account, in order to handle sms, do not want to use this kind of service.
Also, there is hack to install sms/mms apk by rooting, but, again this is not the object of my question.
I just want to check my incoming sms's for now.
Best regards,
Radu
Like mentioned above, if you install gosms or any other third party app it should allow you to view that text message that came through the carrier

Long press the notification and press "App Info" and that will tell you the name of the app.
Hello again,
Here is screenshot and detaild of the app.
As it says it receives SMS, but also can write SMS- see last line, in theory.
Question is, where can find this app. Looks to be hidden..

How to do so with stock mms.apk has already been covered here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34282107
Right in the N7 3G dev section. XDA search function is highly recommended

Hello Rebel,
I know the MMS.APK, saw it, thank you for heads up.
My specific question is, why should I use that, if I have an app already installed. I do get SMSs from any regular gsm phone, without being necessary to create an online account for GOSMSPRO or whatever similar. The screen shot says that I might be able to send also, on my cost SMSs. No probIem, just want to find that app that handles the SMS received. Can I do that ? can I send using same app that is ALREADY installed?
thank you for patience

So it seems the 'Simple message receiver' is an app that comes with the 3g N7. Mine is just wi-fi, so I can't check, but does your app drawer have that app? If you check Settings > Apps > All, is it listed there? I have no idea how to open it if it is not in the app drawer or if you would be able to send using it anyway. Interesting that it is included in the 3G version.

Yes. As thw thread states, they are successfully receiving and sending sms from the same app over gsm, just as you would on a phone. The only difference i forsee is doing so with a dedicated data sim, or using the sim from your existing phone.
Many are using the latter, and using other apps to forward thier phone calls to the data side, and using sms normally.

Ditching Samsung's messaging app

I've seen instructions on xda for replacing touchwiz apps with the GS3, and it's been claimed that it's possible to delete the Samsung messaging app in favor of another sms app.
So I've frozen the Samsung messaging app on my SG4, and I've installed the jellybean build of Google's messaging app. But it doesn't quite work? I can successfully send sms messages (I'm on rogers) and I can receive sms messages if the sms message app is open. But when the app is closed and out of memory I don't get sms.
It gets stranger, though. When I thaw out the Samsung messaging app, I seem to get my sms' again, but in the Google messaging app. Which is sort of what I wanted, but I'm left wondering why the Google app can't work on its own.
Has anyone else tried this and gotten it to work?
Sent from my SGH-I337M using xda app-developers app
Have you tried leaving the Samsung SMS app unfrozen, and simply turn off its notifications? Sometimes that's what you need to do in order for 3rd party SMS apps to work, because the background service is tailored for the OEM's app. So you have to let that retrieve the messages and save them to the SMS/MMS storage area, which other SMS apps can then retrieve the data from.
Although it is strange that the AOSP app isn't working. But it's worth a try.

iPhone MMS not appearing on Messages but they show fine on Google Hangouts... WTH?!?

This one has me scratching my head looking for answers. I noticed this problem a while ago where my friends MMS sent from iPhones were not appearing on my Messages, I have the option for "fetch MMS automatically" and all I get is the little cloud but its blank, it only shows the time it was received, I've also tried disabling the fetch MMS automatically and even when downloading them it shows me the blank cloud. The doozy comes when I tried using Hangouts just to see what it was and to my surprise I could see all my SMS and MMS conversations from my contacts and all the pictures from the iPhone contacts were shown via Hangouts but they do not show on the stock Messages app.
Things I've tried:
1) Googling for answers only resulted in fanboyism comments and speculations that led to more fanboyism.
2) At first I tried contacting my carrier and they made me reset the APN settings to default, which I did and it was after that that I realized that it was only the iPhone MMS messages that weren't being received.
3) Tried disabling the Hangouts services via the Apps option on the settings menu. Restarted phone and still wouldn't work.
4) Been restarting my phone with each setting I change to see if it helps but no.
5) Been bugging my friends to send me MMS from their iPhones and one did get through but nothing more after that.
6) Made sure their iPhones had the setting of "Send MMS when iChat isn't available" enabled.
7) Made sure my old iPhone account was signed out of my old iPhone 4 so I wasn't receiving anymore iMessages.
I'm speculating that I either need to call my carrier again which is Claro PR and explain the situation to see if it helps, or maybe go to a store. Also, I've been thinking about Rooting my phone so I can uninstall some of the bloat, which included Hangouts but don't want to go down that path yet and I don't know if it would really help anything since I already tried disabling the service via the Apps options.
Please help me figure this out, I love this phone but this thing is bugging the hell out of me.
I have had problems with mms on hangouts and the stock app on Sprint doesn't support group mms. I have been using Go sms pro and everything works fine, including iPhone mms messages.
Hope that helps.

Hmm... interesting a replacement messaging app, I would definitely keep this in mind so thanks a lot for the suggestion. I rather use the stock apps while I'm getting used to the phone since this is my first Android device but will definitely use this if resetting to factory defaults doesn't help my problem.
*Edit*
Any other suggestions for my problem are welcomed.
LG didn't enable MMS group messaging on stock messages. My HTC One and S4 had the option in settings to enable it...LG left it out. If you haven't heard, TEXTRA is one of the best, fastest, light weight messaging apps that can handle iPhone group messages without the bloat on go sms and handcent. Look it up on the playstore...ratings are great and all my Android friends use it now. I've yet ran into any issues with group texting.

Hi and thanks for the reply, I've looked up Textra and seems like a nice alternative and has a very clean interface, I'm currently using Hangouts from Google without a problem but would have preferred the stock message app. It's weird because I went to my carrier and they did some test and everything was fine, turns out its only MMS sent from iPhones that won't show through the Message app from G2. Maybe I should try emailing them to see if I can get some answers?
Yea only the Verizon variant supports group messages. I posted a thread about this in the Themes and Apps forum. Could be the cause.
All my friends group text me all the time and send MMS using the Verizon version Messaging app and hangouts. The stock messaging app world best though.
