Hi guys,
This is my first post so go easy. I saw the noob video and yes that's exactly how I feel!
I recently purchased a used unrooted (according to Root Checker) Galaxy S Plus GT-I9001 running Gingerbread 2.3.5 and I've been doing a few hours of research trying to figure out how to upgrade it to ICS.
The most annoying problem I've experienced is problem #5 on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723596 (My phone takes forever to get a GPS-fix)
I have no idea whether upgrading the firmware will make a difference but I'd like to try.
I'm following the steps on this tutorial: http://www.theandroidsoul.com/galax...yanogenmod-9-cm9-pretty-good-and-working-rom/
So far so good, I'm just about ready to try flashing it, but then I read that before doing anything I should back up my IMEI, using EFS Pro. But I can't do that because I'd have to root the device first, but I should backup my IMEI before rooting my device ... ???
So:
1. Should I backup my IMEI before upgrading, or should I do something else first?
2. If so, is there a way to do this without rooting? (I doubt it)
3. So doesn't that mean I have to root my device without backing up the IMEI?
I'm confused.
Thanks so much for your insight.

After you root and also have CWM recovery, you should backup your efs, for i9001 you need to use Odin 4.43 with AriesVe.ops ..read this WIKI http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_Plus/GT-I9001
Friend's Phone help please

Yes as long as your bootloader is still locked you can use SEUS to take to you back to stock.
Wondering if I can root my unlocked Galaxy S2?
I want to i8nstall some apps but they say that the phone has to rooted
Is is possible without braking that phone?
Thank you
Will I loose everything on it?
There is always a chance that you could brick your phone, but thousands of owners have managed to root without doing so.
Your apps should be restored through the Market.
I would suggest you start here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Read the thread a couple of times, until you are certain you understand.
THANK YOU
So it can be done?
Yes, it can be done. There are a couple of ways to do it. There is CF-Root as I linked above or look at something like Litening rom which I believe is already rooted.
will I loose everything on that phone?????
Thanks again
Most custom roms come pre rooted.
Or CF root is the easiest root.
OK
But I am wondering if I loose all my apps and contacts on that phone???
thanks

Hi, im newbie and was gathering info from this execellent forum about root, flash kernel, custom recovery, flashing rom.. so i think there is most easy way for someone like me who is totally new to this, and i want to share it.
Step 1: ROOT, Download DooMLoRD's Easy Rooting Toolkit connect phone to PC and click RUNME.BAT
Step 2: KERNEL, download DarkyOTA from Android Market, then select OTA > kernels, download and install kernel.
That's it you now have root and cwm recovery, ready to do nandroid backup and install custom roms.
First step is to backup your phone before you will test anything. When phone is off hold home+volUP+Power you will get into CWM Recovery and Choose Backup/Restore > Backup
PS: Make sure you have setup debug mode and checked unknow sources in your phone settings in step 1
Hope it helps to someone :>
Yes nice I did the same.
But be aware that "DooMLoRD's Easy Rooting Toolkit" only works with 2.3.5 and not stock 2.3.6 (Mexico and Holland have got it).
Samsung have closed this easy way to root
Thanks for telling us, didn't know this im 2.3.5 lucky

1.This is guide How to root galaxy Note (N7000) running on ICS (4.0.3/4.0.4) -Dedicate to Newbies

3. How to copy/delete/edit/change permission with Root explorer
Since I'm a newbie at this stuff, just wanted to ask if rooting my Note would erase the data stored in my phone memory?
Also, should i make a backup of all the data incase anything goes bad??
P.S - thanks for the tutorial..
Rooting, doesn't erase anything.
But yes it is always advisable to keep backup of your important data, though you may have limited option to backup on unrooted device. some suggestion
Contact - inbuilt import/export or google sync
Msgs - use SMS restore backup appl
Applications - Non root version of My backup application. though you can backup only app not data of appl like game level, credential etc.
Haha
Classic Music Dr...
Thanks for the suggestions.
One last query. Is it necessary to flash another ROM after rooting the phone? If so, could you please suggest me an easy to use ROM and a tutorial on how to flash it would be really helpful!
P.S - I apologize for being such a newbie but this is the first Android phone I'm using!

In short - No.
No need to flash another ROM once rooted although it's preference. You can happily root your stock ROM and maintain root access which will allow you greater control and of course the ability to run Root only apps.
If you wanted to try out other ROM's, check out the development section, Most ROM's have a video or step by step walkthrough on how to install..
No need to apologise, and if you've not used it already - here's a great thread that should answer a lot of your questions;

Flash custom rom
Hi,
I followed the steps given in the video and was able to root successfully.
Now, Can i directly flash the custom ROMs (for eg. ICS Stunner 1.6.26 which is an ICS ROM) through CWM?
I read a warning that said flashing custom ROMs on ICS kernels can lead to a hard brick and that we need to flash a safe kernel like Abyss Kernel.
Here is a screenshot of my About Phone.

First of all I'd like to express how I feel. I feel like crying! I honestly just spent my entire savings for this year to get my note III and now I have no idea how to get it back to work. Phone is working but IMEI is null and baseband is unknown.
I wanted to install a custom ROM and thought it would be a great idea to backup my EFS. I used EFS Professional v2.0.91 tool, and for some reason instead of backing up my efs this tool got rid of my imei and baseband. I have tried every solution there is and I reached a dead end and the point of I just wanna cry now! Please if anyone could help me!

EDIT: I am getting random reboots from time to time

OK I'll chime in here before you mess up your device due to advice that is very poor IMO.
The fire script only works if you lose your BASEBAND not your BASEBAND and IMEI!!!
By flashing the fire script it actually messes the device up more. And it should ONLY be run if you lose basband not IMEI/SN.
Read THIS thread and learn the risks, your device can be fixed, however you need to use ADB and be prepared for a bit of a headache to restore your IMEI.
People need to stop recommending that fire script until they know what the hell it actually bloody does.

Your issue would have been loss of BASEBAND not IMEI and BASEBAND, there is a HUGE difference. I suggest you learn the differences and how they vary before recommending a script that can ruin a device.

you are mistaken bro, the brickloop fix was actually made for efs/imei loss,. that was being caused when the note 3 was first released and the custom recoveries deleted imei
i have helped many ppl get their imei back using that very fix
