First Drop Test - Galaxy Note II General

Enjoy

Wow, it held up much better than I expected - is GG2 to thank for it?
On a side note, wonder how a face first drop test would go; I'm thinking the screen would shatter from 4 feet or above.

I think because it is bigger, it has more resistance as galaxy s3 (it also has GG2)

Basic rules of physics though would justify the assumption that it would undergo more force (F=ma) on contact. Maybe they changed something on the construction because it seems it doesn't twist as easily as the GS3 either.

Oh thats nice.

thats freakin wonderful its take it way better than s3 O_O
s3 from first drop get ****ed up

Deffo seems tougher! :good:
There's also a scratch test which looks good too. A guy Key's the screen well to reveal no scratches. They learnt from the flimsy s3.
They need to learn from this flimsy launch now

3 hard drops, and the GNote2 took them all. Painful to watch the video, but good to know it can take a such drops well :good:

I find GizmoSlip's videos much better. I mean this one seems more natural, but you never know how the phone will fall. I doubt it survives a fall from chest height on the screen for example. It will surely not crack if it falls on it's back either..

This is why all of these drop test videos are stupid. They're unscientific and anyone who's taken even grade school science should know better than to pay them any attention. Without stabilizing the height or the angle of impact this "test" is silly. A REAL drop test would be securing the phone and hitting it with a piston at different angles, or better yet squeezing it with a known force until significant damage is done then approximating the height of said squeeze. Multiple drops within the same test are also questionable seeing as the phone could be getting weakened after each drop therefore making it easier for the following drops to do damage.

Galaxy S Plastic frame clicks

Hi friends,
I have a question in order to figured it out if my new I9000 Galaxy S has a little problem or it is a factory default behavior.
It is related to plastic frame(margin).
If I start to squeeze it a little symmetrically from the top to bottom on both left and right parts it feels very solid all the way down until I rich the last 1/4 from the vertical parts where pushing a little the frame seems to click(I can hear it) at the same height on both parts for a short distance. Continuing going down feels solid again.
I squeeze it from up to down not from lateral.
Due to the fact that is identically symmetrically I wonder it if is normal or not. Have any of you noticed that ?
I hope I was more or less clear in my explanation.
Thanks for helping me !
I notice slight clicking noise, and a little creaking noise when squeeze. To me this seemed normal. It will go away with good silicone or aluminium case.

Is this really a solution?
You want to make your phone significantly worse? Any silicone, aluminium or crystal case will make it look horrible, in my opinion...
If the frame clicks, it will fall of eventually.
Mine also clicks and squeeze and I don't bother it won't fall off.
Don't use case it looks terrible!
You will appreciate a good case after the phone fall off once or twice. This phone is a slippery lady.

Yesyerday 9th of July: I think I was not 100% clear related to the squeeze term. Is more like a tapp on the frame that sorrounding the screen, with both fingers as I said before. So is not a real big click sound... is like a feeling that the frame covers a microspace between the frame and the screen but nothing visible, just I fill it sometimes when I tapp the frame above the "back" and "settings" buttons. Anyway I think I
become paranoid.
Today 10th of July: I went today to the central store to test what I hear on other SGS phones. I tested on 8 models. They are all the same. Every one has a small zone where tapping you fill like a small hole(extreemly small hole). So, I have the proof that is quite natural and every phone Galaxy S has it. And absolutly is NOT disturbing. In this way I made peace with my new phone and with me and I advice to do the same for you. Every phone is perfect in it's way and if you hear something when u touch it seems the phone reveals and speak to you. He's your new buddy. So, trust him and let's have a long life togheter.
when you start referring to your phone romantically it sounded very weird.

Uncomfortable to hold for long periods

Anyone else notice this or is it just me? I need to get a cover for it and that will probably help a lot. It's the shape of the edges, its like they are designed to mess up my fingers. The slick back makes it harder to grip and therefore I have to hold it tighter than I would say my old kindle, thus making the ergonomics worse.

Yup I hate this...I even remove the slide cover to give my hands some slack. I have to hold the tablet with both hands just to make semi comfortable.

Well IMO I like the way they integrated the actual cover into the tablet itself, it makes a good stand for watching videos and stuff or playing games if you have a gamepad. As for benefits...hmm, protecting the screen may be one. I haven't seen a scratch and I've owned it for a month and a half now (my nexus 7 got hairline scratches in the first week -_-). The only problem is ergonomics, if you hold it incorrectly it makes it uncomfortable to hold after long periods of use. Overall I think its worth the buy.

Thanks very much for that... Really helped.
I just ordered a case that's designed for the HP slate extreme. Cost me $12. Its a stand and cover and should fix the uncomfortable ergonomics. I'll post a review when it gets here tomorrow.

Adding a decal skin to the face and back have helped immensely. Ofc, there's nothing out there that's a custom fit for the Tegra Note, so I just used a the cheapest Nexus 7 skin I could find and it's an incredibly ill fit, but it's an improvement. This tablet is really heavy as ****. I wonder who the genius engineer is that wanted a big magnet on the back cover.

HEy could you potentially post some pics of ur tab now with case/skins etc I would want to see what it looks like .....
.........Also I bought an tegra note case just last week and I have tested it out properly..... I have had no issues except to get used to holding it when playing games.... but then I got around it but standing it and putting two fingers either side inside the triangular flap where it stands and rest the two outside fingers on either hand around the triangular flap.... It made it loads easier and comfrtable to play :victory:

Maybe you won't experience stiffness (tendonitis?) in the fingers. I didn't start to really notice this was going to be a big issue until probably a month into owning it. I'm sure there are other factors involved other than just the tablet, but I can say that I've never experienced tendonitis in my fingers before.
As far as photos, my skin looks like crap. It's all off center. If you're still interested I can post later when I get a new skin and cut it up & apply properly. I think the skin on the glass border shifts around a bit.

Home button durability.. lets talk..

So, like many, i have jumped on the S6 bandwagon, and am rather enjoying it so far (so much so that i haven't even bothered with bootloader or root yet). And while over the few days so far the glass is great (i would hope so.. sheesh), i have noticed some scratches already on the home button. Now, being that no phone will ever stay perfect, i accept that wear and tear will happen, but i was surprised to see it this early.
Certainly, i am happy enough with the phone (non scratched glass, good battery life (with bloat disabled), etc), but am curious to see if i am alone in this, or others have the same issue.
And more to that - will the scratches become a problem for the fingerprint reader (something i do enjoy using, and would like to keep doing so)? Perhaps some voices of experience can bring some wizdom..

Mine had scratches right out of the box and I scratched it further thinking there is a protective film over it since it looked like it had one. Its definitely a concern in the long run though I was able to get rid of the scratches by using toothpaste. My home button also wobbles a bit vertically and if I tap it gently in the left corner, it creates a clicky noise. The biggest concern for me right now is the pink tint on my s6's screen on the bottom half and left side. I can exchange but may end up getting the same/worse unit since most of the people who faced this issue ended up getting worse/similar units.
Will the finger print scanner stop working after many scratches is something we can only guess at the moment.
What's it made of?
The home button had the same vulnerability on the Note 4 and Note Edge, but it never affected the fingerprint reader. Micro scratches galore, but nothing too glaring and didn't affect the functionality.
Well, i certainly will agree right now, what i see is micro, and has had no impact on the scanning (4 fingers registered, no issue at all). I am a little disappointed that with the excellent build otherwise exhibited, something people will use most may be the most prone to scratches; but i also accept that that sensor may not work with more durable materials.
Still, a little more reassuring that the Note 4 is similar and should be ok..
I've noticed some minor scratches too on my home button. I'm not sure whether they were there out of the box as I didn't think to look closely at the time.
I imagine you could take a cheap plastic/PET type screen protector and cut out an oval shape and put it on the button. I'm not sure whether that would change the fingerprint recognition or not since I don't know how those scanners work. It would be easy to test though even before trying to cut the shape out.

Actually, yes, it is quite possible, as i noted them just about the second day i had it, and was shocked to see them. I may not have the smoothest thumbs, but the scratches went all the way across, which is also odd.
So far, no real issues, but it was surprising to see (part of me wrongly assumed the button was also glass).

honestly it should be glass. guess they're still working on premium quality 100%
it may be more likely that they were there out of box. i've tried scratching mine with my nail and no dice.
they have some assembly line and packing kinks to work out clearly. my device thankfully came unscathed but the plastic wrap that covered the phone looked like someone had pulled it back on with their finger/nail - there were 3 little indentions on it.
So, i hope its not related, but i have had my phone now fail to read my fingerprint a few times, and pop up a notice saying there was a failure, and if it keeps happening, reboot the phone. A reboot (or even manual unlock) seems to work, but i am hoping its not a sign of things to come...
No micro-scratches here yet....
I've confessions to make: I'm obsessed with physical buttons wearing off! The first app I installed is "pie control", which is something I really got accustomed to and find more practical than using home button and recent button, incidentally this saves a lot of click on the home button. I've been using for a while even an accessibility feature that let you wake up the phone by waving in front of it, to be honest I don't use much this one. Then again I use Nova Launcher and I set up a shortcut to lock the phone double tapping the display. I know I'm way overcaring about this, on the other hand I just dismissed my old S3 that was still practically perfect even after almost 3 years of usage.

Let me recommend you something what I personally did after finding micro scratches right out of the box. Use an ear bud (used to clean ear) and a very small amount of toothpaste. Apply a little paste on the bud and gently rub the home button for a min or so. Once done, wipe it from a damp cloth and also taking out bits an pieces of the paste that may have got around the gaps.
I was completely able to remove micro scratches doing the above and hope it helps you too. People have also used the above method to clean their camera lenses with great effect. Look out for a thread under the Xperia Z3 compact page where people complaint of having scratches on their camera lens after using the phone for a while.
Note - Dont rub too hard on the home button. It wont harm but will take away the gloss from the button leaving it looking matte.

The button is actually metal, but the substrate for the sensor (on top) is of a type of polymer film- like plastic? I'll post a source link when I get a chance. Thx

I'll give it a try tonight the toothpaste and the q-tips .... hope it works... i'll try to be as gentle as possible and go up from there ... thanks for the info man. Same problem here. This is just conjecture. While it may very well be true, the author doesn't give any evidence or references to back this claim. For all we know, Samsung may have chosen plastic simply because it was cheaper.
when the iPhone 5S was launched, a few people expressed concerns that the sort of CMOS scanner they were using tends to deteriorate over time. This, thankfully, hasn't proven to be the case; however I think that this deterioration is mitigated by an exceptionally strong sapphire glass coating on the 5S's home button - and now on the 6 and 6 Plus.
I have concerns for the durability of the S6 home button too - not for the scratches (which mine also exhibited after only 6 days of careful use), but for the likelihood of the sensor itself wearing out over time, as they are supposedly prone to doing. If Samsung have indeed skimped on the protection this home button requires for long-term durability then people will be in for a nasty shock further down the line when they can no longer use the fingerprint recognition, or when it deteriorates to the point of being useless. For those who recommend using toothpaste to clean the scratches out, I would suggest that this is a terrible idea - clearly scratches are going to reappear anyway, and taking some of the already weedy protection away from the fingerprint scanner with a micro abrasive surely can't be a good idea.
I'm really happy with the S6 but the home button is a big concern for me. I simply don't think it's as high quality as the ones Apple use. My 6 day old S6 has been exchanged by the store for a new device as the home button not only rattled but didn't work at all on the left side unless it was pressed with a degree of weight. My replacement still jiggles a tiny but but is at least better.
To me this is a bigger issue than 'Sensorgate', which is just a load of rubbish as far as I'm concerned.

You do make some really good points… When you returned your phone for exchange, was it a big pain in the ass? Did they hint that they do an exception for you?
I've just become very wary about returns, exchanges because I've been screwed before on exchanges and being stuck with a mediocre device.
Anyways, I am very surprised that not too many complaints about the sensor has come up on the web searches so far.
I could demonstrate that the home button wouldn't work on the left side unless I pressed it hard. They were able to replicate it themselves so it wasn't too much of an issue. I struggle to deal with high street stores in matters of poor quality control though as they tend to take the stance of 'I can't see anything...it's not really an issue to me'. One thing I miss when I move away from Apple products - not to sound like a fanboy - is that I feel I can trust that they will rectify any little annoyances I have.
One thing I feel confident in saying with absolute certainty is that the home button on the Galaxy S6 is not even close to the quality of Touch ID. It works, and it works well; but the feel it gives when you click it, the overall travel and the cheap plastic feel is a giveaway. Samsung are nearly up to iPhone standards with this device in terms of quality control but this button is its Achilles heel - they kind of cheaped out.

First Drop Test - Very Disappointing Results

I don't understand why LG decided to not include the Gorilla Glass 4 with the new G4.
All the gorilla glass is the same. I've yet to see a real difference in day to day use with any version.

To be honest with you it wouldn't have made a difference. Yes it's true that at the same thickness GG4 is stronger than GG3. What every one misses the point of GG4: Its sole purpose is to have thinner glass at comparable strength to GG3. The reason why Samsung chose GG4 was because they were putting the glass on both sides of the phone and needed the weight reduction.

Drop tests are SO dumb. What do they prove? They ONLY show what happened for THAT person in THAT environment. They can't reasonably be extrapolated by anyone to any situation beyond that one.
What do you do with dumb info like this when your phone breaks and it does not break like this one? Are you shocked? Do you try to argue with the seller that "so this drop test video I saw showed that.. but mine did....".
Do these actually make people feel better in some way - or worse - and stop or start them from actually buying a phone?

I disagree, a drop test is a very informative way how normal people drop their phones by simulating it. A generic drop test demonstrates how a phone does in that particular environment given those variables and how it fair. It is reasonable to extrapolate that if I were to drop it in that manner it's screen too will likely break. Had I not seen that video, i would think during this day and age, a phone would survive a face drop.

Yeah? And what do you do with this info? How does it help? What are the chances that YOU drop YOUR phone THIS way? And ok, so you drop your phone... then what does this "drop test" help? You cannot, in any way (1) predict how YOUR phone will do in the situation where you drop your phone nor can you (2) in any way use a drop test video to make a case to any maker to get any relief. Do you tell yourself, "hey man, the drop test showed it should survive this 'type' of drop so WTF".
So again.. what does it do? What does it prove? Do you really go around saying, "OMG, did you see how well xxx phone faired in 'the drop test'". A drop test I will remind you, that has no controls and is not repeatable and is just some random people in a random environment.
"if I were to drop it in that manner it's screen too will likely break." - seriously? Ok, when you drop something, what manner is it? What if it is in that manner? What if it is not in the manner? Can you control the manner in which it drops? 1 degree of variability in any way and it is no longer "that manner" to which you saw the drop test video.
"Had I not seen that video, i would think during this day and age, a phone would survive a face drop" really? Ok.. some do. Some don't. I have face dropped phones, NO issues. I have faced dropped phone, screen crack. Ok? What? So now what? A drop test video did what exactly and proved what exactly?
Why not a fire test? Or a "your phone was in a car accident" test. Or a high speed "throw the phone against the wall test" for the angry passionate people.
I stand firm on this.. these are worthless. Just like a stupid blender test. Drop your phone? As it falls through the air you should expect it to break. if it does not it is NOT because of a dumb drop test video confirmed it would or wouldn't, it is because.... in that moment... you got lucky

I don't understand how these drop testers can destroy expensive smartphones on purpose without dying a little bit inside. Even if it was given to me for free by LG or Samsung for the sole purpose of a drop test I still couldn't do it. It's such a waste of a perfectly good phone....

Not according to this site:
http://www.androidheadlines.com/2015/04/lg-g4-specifications.html
I do not think drop test is going to help to prove anything, if they are really confident, then they should give free exchange if screen cracks.
If the reports (here on xda and on other sites) are to be believed LG should be happy they didn't go for GG4 as the reports are saying that it scratches very easily. GG3 is tried and tested and easily good enough for anything that is thrown at it. Just because things are the latest doesn't mean they are the best.
^ I think you got it wrong to some S6 users the glass have fine scratches from the factory. I didn't see complaining about GG4 get easily scratched.
Corning gorilla glass is for scratches... Never about cracks or breaking. All glass screen phones fail a drop test. You would think a company would produce an unbreakable screen... You may not upgrade as fast though?
Don't drop it

After feeling the pressure from "Glass Sphere " they did improve the glass durability against drops (cracks/breakage). According to some articles the GG4 is a big improvement over the GG3.
How about you people stop dropping your phones? :good:
Never!

im gonna put a case when i get my G4. not sure weather to get the plastic one because if im going to have it in a case 24/7 i dont think the leather will even show.

6P Glass Lift?

So this is my second Nexus 6P with this supposed issue. It seems like there is a lift or space between the screen and aluminum bezel. I just wanted to know if anyone else's phone is like this. This is my 2nd RMA, and everything else about the device is perfect other than this. Just wondering if its normal or I should definitely RMA again.

Hmm. Now I see the same thing on my 6p. Sorry I don't have another device to take a picture.
Although I can never unsee this, I don't mind.
I have the same thing not to that extent on the power button side. Call it defect if you may but the device is working fine for me since day 1 release of the phone. If you're an ocd freak like 99.9% of the people here, then rma the device.
Every phone will have one issue or another, this is probably the least annoying and noticeable one.. I know it sucks that for this price we still get crappy quality overall, but I guess we just need to live with it.
I wouldn't RMA it honestly

I have this issue and I am fairly rough with my phone (I work outdoors all day) and the issue has not gotten any worse with less than perfect treatment!! (It gets thrown around a lot...)

That gives some re-assurance, I guess if anything happens I still have that 1 year standard warranty.
Exactly!! This phone isn't as fragile as people say. But the overall quality is a bit lacking

I agree, I think google and Huawei could have done a better job at quality control. For example, I rarely see Apple devices with these inconsistencies. Not saying Apple is perfect, but they fore sure do a better job with QC.
Also, do you have this issue on both sides of the phone, on the side with the power button and without it? I just checked and its apparent a bit on the other side too. Just curious about yours.
Yep, both sides are pretty bad. I used to be so picky and ocd with devices and would send them back for the smallest of issues. I just don't have the time to be doing that now!!

but the glass is. GG4 or not. Mine shattered from a drop at car seat height (approx 2-2.5 ft) face down. had a tpu case on it but no screen cover. must have hit a tiny rock or something. couldn't really tell. disappointed in the GG4 for sure... I dropped other phones with never an issue... must be bad luck...

Every drop is different, people have reported dropping the 6P face down on concrete and having no damage.. In my experience, the screen scratches easily and unless you have a tempered glass screen protector, it will crack if you drop it.
You wonder why google doesn't improve quality control, the money wasted returning units, sending, and paying someone to answer your call, obviously the contractor must deal with this in the long run, but you'd expect google to be consistent at providing a nexus experience for consumers and want to reduce the amount of faulty units in circulation, these fault threads don't help with sales.
Seeing people talk about being on their 3rd+ unit, im surprised people tolerated with this. I got my unit from a mobile store who actually opened the unit and did their own quality control to reduce the costs of having to supply a remedy while the phone is being fixed.
I don't know about the laws in the states but here if your unit is faulty 2-3+ times, your legally allowed a refund.
