[Q] HELP A500 doesn't like coffee. - Acer Iconia A500

Hi All,
Today my A500 decided to have a coffee bath and it really didn't go so well. The screen is completely dead but it does seem to be running in the background. When i plug in to my PC it connects and shows up as a device which is a good sign.
My issue is I need to get some important info off of the internal sd and although i can see the device it is not showing up as an external drive. Does anyone know of a way to force the tab to mount as an external drive or physicaly remove the internal storage?
Thanks in advance

Yeah, you cooked your digitizer.
Well, somewhere on XDA, there is an app that will act as a display on your pc. I know it is somewhere, but I really don't know what the name is. You're gonna have to do some searching. Via Google and XDA.
Also, you have probably USB, so you can use a mouse.

Did you try plugging into hdmi and see if it will output to TV or monitor? To see if it will respond to a usb mouse.

Now see, I never thought of using the HDMI. (shows you how much I use HDMI)
However, might not going to work well, if you have to move files to the PC. I wonder if you connect all of it, if it will still function.

thanks guys
I'll try the HDMI thing today and let you all know

So I tried the HDMI to the tv and no luck.
When I plug into the PC it pops up with the what do you want to do dialogue. If I say browse device it opens up windows explorer and says there is nothing on the device. Is there a way I can access the internal file system?

Not without having Root access.

Success
Hi All,
Just letting you know that I found a solution. After spending somewhere close to a billion hours trying to find a way to access the file system I came across a really cool program called Android Commander. It let me access everything on the internal memory and copy everything I needed to my PC. It's free and easy to use.

Connecting g1 to cpu?

maybe i'm missing a previous post but how or can we connect this to a pc?
you mean for tethering?
no- not yet
not for tethering just for adding music to my sdcard, crap like that
if you are running Rc19 just plug it in via the usb cable provided and it should be recognized as a Removable storage device ..... and if you are running RC29 when you plug the phone in via the usb cable provided you will get a notification on your phone just pull down the notification window and select "usb connected" and the mount .....
It is the usb driver for windows. for android g1.

That won't help as it is for debuging only. To access the sdcard you just have to plug in the phone and it acts as a mass storage device that is picked up by any xp or vista computer.
well i plugged it in and windows recognizes the devise but its not showing anything on the storage card..
when you plug it in, did you either
A) (if you havent got your ota update) check the box for USB
B) (if you have the update) click the notification on the G1 and "mount"?

make sure the sd card is recognized on the device? try taking it out and putting it back in again
It works man...
I was having the same problem...I received the update OTA yesterday, and today I tried to import data from my PC and the PC prompted me to insert disk into drive"e"...there was an icon on the G1, so I pulled down the menu, and clicked on the usb icon, and responded to the popup box asking me if i wanted to mount the SD card, I clicked the mount option and presto!!!

good idea! tried it and still no workie. the G1 does see the SD card though. Called TMobile and they are replacing the device.
how do I work with this phone?
I first want to apologize 'cause I'm gonna sound like a mayor noob here but, My wife just got the g1 about a week ago and she wanted me to do some stuff for her on it , I have a Tmobile dash and she knows how much stuff I've done to it with my pc but when I tried connecting to the pc nothing happened, the phone shows that is connected and charging but I can't acess it on my computer. I did a search and found a couple of sites, forums, blogs, and I did the settings/applications/development/usb debugging, and got the windows installation wizard, but since I don't have a cd for install, it wouldn't go any further. I read you guys talking about a kind of driver that the pc needs to have. Did I understood right? Is the g1 capable of being viewd with the windows explorer like the dash to add ringtones, wallpapers, view folders from the pc? Any help would be apreciated , Thanks...

Talk about thread necromancy!
You can connect it to look at the memory card out of the box. Just pull down the notification screen or alternatively press Menu and select Notifications. Press on the USB notification and select Mount. You should be able to see the SDcard pop up in Windows' Explorer. Now if you're talking modding the OS for stuff like themes that you will have to hack your phone in which instructions can be found in the development forum thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442480

3.1 & USB Peripherals

I know that 3.1 added support for a broader spectrum of USB devices, and I thought it would be interesting to compile a list of what works and doesn't work!
So far, I've tried:
ACER LIQUID E - Basically just charges the phone and allows for tethering (wish I could mount it) **UPDATE** After rooting and installing busybox and drive mount, Liquid E is able to mount! (Thanks, entropy)
HP WIRELESS MINI KEYBOARD (Model #U10G) - Works flawlessly! Prior to the update, only the keyboard worked, but now the mouse works too, as expected!
SONY CYBERSHOT (Model #DSC-W55) - At first the Iconia didn't detect it, but after I went into the camera menu and changed USB connect mode from "auto" to "mass storage" and plugged it back into the tablet, the Gallery app opened automatically and the pics from the camera magically appeared! Woohoo!
LOGITECH ATTACK 3 JOYSTICK - Not too useful, but it works! Basically it works as a glorified mouse, scrolling up/down/left/right. Pretty basic for now, but perhaps a good flight simulator will come out in the future?
SAMSUNG STORY STATION 1 TB HARD DRIVE - My biggest disappointment... I know there are workarounds to get external drives to work, but I was hoping 3.1 would provide a fix for this. It is formatted FAT32, so I'm not sure what the problem is, but my Iconia isn't picking it up **UPDATE** After rooting and installing busybox and drive mount, Story Station is able to mount! (Thanks, entropy)
I can confirm the iphone 3gs will charge and you can import photos/movies taken on the camera.
I have a cannon camera at home. I know they have a strange interface which always requires me to load a separate driver in windows. I will test it later and let you know.

Thanks! I'll keep that in mind. I'm not currently rooted, but I'll likely take that plunge soon. I was hoping 3.1 would cure that in the stock software, but we can't always get what we want

No idea - would probably involve a rooted device and a custom rom - head to the dev section.
Logitech mx510 and mx518 mice confirmed.
Xbox 360 wired controller works but found no games that use it and it is very clunky for nav'ing the UI in general.
Wacom Bamboo powers but nothing functions.

A "safe" way? I'm pretty sure it won't explode if you just unplug them.
In all seriousness, you should be able to just unplug them without losing data. At least I always have.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the reason you have to "eject" removable media from windows is because windows has some sort of drive caching to speed things up. This means that just because you have copied a file to your usb drive, doesn't mean the data has actually been written right away.
Furthermore, Windows also locks out files that are in use by an active application. As such, windows makes you "eject" the media in order to give the OS a chance to check to see if any of the files are still in use, to avoid the application having a brain fart and crashing. Also, if an application is in the process of writing to a file and you yank out the drive, the file could become corrupt.
I think both scenarios are not likely to occur on an Android tablet, mainly because its based on a real operating system not designed to treat you like an idiot. Just make sure none of the data is being used by any open apps and you should be fine.
That being said, always make sure to keep backups.
Cheers,
-PW

[Q] how do I use phone files on tab?

I asked this once and got an answer that I should "duh" remove the micro sd from the phone and insert it in the tab. If I don't like that i must be stupid or lazy.
I use a lot of spreadsheets in my work. I have been using them on my relatively small 3.7" phone until I got this tablet. Since there is a USB port on the a500, I figured that i could use the cable and use the file on the phone through the USB cable. But the tab doesn't see the sd card when used as a disk drive. The my touch slide 4g has a 32gig card in it.
The tab can see large USB drives except not the phone.
They are both WiFi enabled and have Bluetooth ability. Bluetooth is slow and not so easy as a USB connection. I have not been able to establish a WiFi FTP relationship. I could open the files on either device with a cloud storage, but this is complicated and can be slow and insecure when I am out and about using public WiFi. It can gobble up data if I use my data connection and tethering for both the tab and the phone to keep going back and forth to the cloud for read only and minor changes.
All I want to do is to be able to use my phone as a disk drive as I can do on a computer, or as i can do with an external drive or memory card.
When i have access to a desktop or laptop, I simply plug in the phone and open the file on the phone and then save it right back there when I'm done.
This seems so simple a task. Why is it not right up there with easy things to do? After all, isn't this one of the reasons there is a standard USB port built in when no one else has one?
Sorry to ramble on, but this is one thing I would really like to do.

You CAN use your phones disk drive mode, you just need to mount the drive on your tablet. Use DriveMount from the Market, should do what you need.

[Q] Nexus Player otg issues cant see usb drive

Hi I have side loaded Kodi and some plugin using a otg cable to a 8gb thumb drive.
It worked well for a week or so and now it seems to stopped access and only see thumb drive but greyed out so I can click on it. All software works well just not being able to see usb drive mounted on Nexus
I am able to see the external drive from my router and access file using es explorer. I also been helping a friend set his up and the same thing happened to his. Maybe the update closed this door?
The device is not rooted, Have tried different drives even mybook 1 tb powered drive.

External hard drive can't be mounted?? (RESOLVED!)

I just got a Shield Pro (only due to the fact that I was able to get the Pro with the remote and stand for $244) and I'm trying to connect my NFTS 3TB external hard drive, but it won't mount. I read somewhere the Shield can't recognize a hard drive with multiple partitions so I extended the original partition and now there is only one, but it still won't mount no matter what I do.
Any thoughts, tips, tricks or advice on how to get it mounted will be greatly appreciated.

Sorry if this sounds partitioning but at 3tb sounds like it must be externally powered. I'm assuming its powered up and you can hear it spinning up? I would also try a different usb cable even if that cable works on the PC. Stranger things have been known to happen.

Thanks! I'm not sure what you're saying about partitioning, but the external drive drive is externally powered and I can hear it spinning up. I'll try another cable when I get home tonight. That would be great if that was the only issue.
Thanks again.
No probs thats my damn autocorrect, I meant "patronising"
I have tried a 2TB Toshiba, a 2TB WD Passport, and a 4TB Samsung portable hard drive. All of them are 2.5" hard drives and all of them are self-powered (not plugged into an external source for power). All of them work without any trouble. They are formatted in NFTS and have only 1 partition. Maybe it's your brand of hard drive that is not working on your Shield TV.

Amazon. I was shocked when I saw the price for a Pro with all those accessories. Plus the seller never registered everything and I got the warranty too.
I haven't had any issues connecting am external HD to my Shield Pro. I have an old Western Digital 500gb drive, a Samsung EVO Pro 250gb SSD and a 1TB Western Digital HD and all of them connect just fine. The 1tb HD requires a external power source but it still works without any issues. I use ES File Explorer to access the HD if that helps at all. I also had no issues with any of my flash drives 8gb-128gb from various manufactures.

It could be the cable but I couldn't tell you for sure. If it still doesn't work after that maybe a factory reset or a reflashing of the images may be in order. Something could be corrupted cashing the issue but that scenario is a more severe remedy to the small issue.
UPDATE: Although I tried to repair the drive on my WIn 8.1 mini-desktop, it wasn't until I connected the external drive to my AIO with Win 10 that the external drive was repaired (which took a maybe a minute) and now I can access my external drive.
Now for my bonus question (that I will create a new thread for as well). Is there anyway to access the external drive or the Pro's 500GB drive from my network? I can see it as SHIELD on my network and I can see the IP address, but I can't seem to access it. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

If your Shield Device is rooted, you can always give Servers Ultimate Pro (comes up as the Amazon free app of the day quite often) a try & setup a simple SMB server. You would probably need Server Pack B (this is free). I actually have this setup on my Nexus Player with Stickmount.

Install ES file manager. Run the remote control section inside and it will run a ftp server on the sheild. You can then ftp in with filezilla or something and access the files. No root needed, but you need to enable the sever each time you want to transfer files etc :good:

Put the IP address in the address bar...in the format 192.168.1.?? And make sure you have the right port number in the port box... ES file manager screen will show you the address and port number. I'm guessing you haven't put the port number in

Thanks. I actually did do that. I guess I have to keep trying.
This is going to sound odd, but if you are on ethernet, try using wireless to transfer files. Most FTP programs won't start a server on ethernet as they are programmed for wireless only. They think phones and if a phone is not wireless it's mobile network, and therefor don't turn on server. Worked for me on both ES and Solid Explorer wireless, but neither wired.
I'm having the same problem as topic creator. Using a self-powered 3 TB WD Passport, and cannot get it to mount on the Shield no matter how I format it (FAT32, EXFAT, NTFS both MBR and GPT). It reads on every other device and PC I have just fine.

ES File Explorer even recognizes the presence of a USB drive, but gives a "failed to open file" error when attempting to access it. Android's storage manager doesn't see the drive at all.
